Powershot G5X mark II status?

A friend had rented a G5X II to take on a trip to France a couple years ago. He liked it for travel, so he tried to buy one. Eventually he did find one in stock somewhere some months back.

I was in Norway and England for four weeks in July and August. My G5X II did great. I did have the realization after I got home that I could have used the super wide-angle lens on my iPhone in those situations where the 24mm equivalent of the Canon was not wide enough, rather than shooting to stitch after getting home. It just didn't occur to me to use the phone camera except when I didn't have the Canon along. There's a term for that kind of rigid habitual thinking, but I don't recall it.

I didn't take an exceptional number of pictures on the trip, but mostly just enjoyed seeing and doing things, which is the point of my leaving the 6D2 and the GFX 100S and lenses at home. The train ride across Norway was spectacular, but I didn't try to capture much of it. My favorite picture was taken from a boat on a fjord, showing somewhat the atmospheric qualities of the day. I think I'll make a big print of it. G5X II shots hold up well at 13" x 19".

Is the 1DX Mark II the last Canon DSLR camera made with interchangeable focusing screens?

From what I can tell, the 5d3, 5d4, and the 1DX Mark III all have fixed focusing screens (from looking at the manual)

So if you want an officially-supported split-prism focusing screen for manual focusing through the OVF, the 1DX Mark II is the only available choice from Canon?

Does anyone have an EC-B screen? Does it work well?

Venus Optics launches the Laowa 24mm T8 2X Macro Pro2be

I have the original probe lens and while it mostly stays on the shelf, when I do get a project that requires its use I will admit a guilty pleasure in shooting with it.

That being said, it needs extra stabilization in terms of a dedicated lens support which needs to be purchased from China, and at F14 it gobbles up light. They also have a nasty yellow-green cast and aren’t exactly pin-sharp.

I’m really tempted with the box set, if I can find it at a reasonable price outside Japan. I can see use cases for all three lenses and the enhanced optics make them an attractive investment. Will wait for some longer term reviews, however, rather than taking at face value any YouTube buzz from the usual idiots looking to score extra views by featuring and raving about such an optical oddity.

Canon EOS R7 in the bitter cold

In that case, have you considered the OM-1? They say: "Our dustproof and splashproof design is trusted by photographers from around the world, so we made it even better. The OM-1 features IP53* dustproof and waterproof performance. The tough, lightweight magnesium alloy body features sealing in all the right places, giving it reliability that goes further than ever with dustproof and splashproof performance, for reliability in more practical use situations. It is also freezeproof to -10°C for continued operation even at low temperatures. This construction makes the camera usable in the most punishing environments." Their 150-400mm lens looks great both for optical quality and weatherproofing but is $7500. I'm very happy with the R7 + RF 100-500mm or RF 100-400mm and they fit my needs fine, but for extreme conditions, the OM-1 does look rather good.

Speedlite size comparison: 430EX III - RT and EL-5

The EL-5 is slightly larger (wider, mainly) than the 600EX-RT. Makes sense, they have the same max light output (GN 60), though the recycle time of the EL-5 is blazing fast by comparison. Even the included cold shoe / stand of the EL-5 is bigger. More comparison info from when I first received it here and here.

Sony will announce the A7c II and A7cR on August 29, 2023

It looks like the first big announcement heading into the always busy Q4 will come from Sony on August 29, 2023 with the likely arrival of the alpha A7c II and the alpha A7cR. The likely specifications for each camera have been around for a while, and both look to be well specced offerings.
Sony cameras are almost always well specced. That's why reviewers and influencers who have the camera for a day or less love them. All they really know is the spec numbers. And the cameras almost always under-perform, in my opinion. The Sony EVFs, for example, have the highest resolution, and yet every reviewer I have seen who compared the Sony A1 with the Nikon Z9, commented on how the Nikon was brighter and clearer. Cheaper glass in the Sony, they speculated. Users on FB groups also mention the duller EVFs in comparison to other brands, and that was certainly the case with the A7 II which I briefly owned. Lots of folks on FB also commenting on torn shutters at around 100k shots or less. Great specs don't always equal great performance.

Venus Optics shows off a new Laowa RF FFii 15mm f/4 ‘Cookie’ Lens

Well, technically a pancake is any cake made in a pan.
For some reason in the USA when we say pancake we mean flapjacks.
We even call them that when they are griddle cakes that never touch a pan.
Strange, because in Britain, flapjacks are kind of granola bars...
So, this Laowa is also a flapjack lens ;)

Patent: Canon RF-S 15-70mm f/4 and RF-S 15-85mm f/2.8-4

If the Lenses

would be "L" - category - it would be "The DREAM - Couple" with my fantastic EOS R7. (They would give the Range 24-112 compared to full-frame). At the moment I use my EOS R7 with EF-S 17-55 f:2,8 but this is more heavy and big because of the needed adaptor. Or with RF 14-35 f4 "L" which is too short at the 35 End but feels like a Dream-Combination" in the hands.
The EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS was not an L lens.
I won't get my hopes up so high but it would be nice.

Patent: Canon RF 11-24mm f/4L USM

I hope that the RF version is as rectilinear corrected as the current EF version. Looking at the recent horrendous barrel distortion on the RF 14-35 f4 and the RF 15-35...I'm not too hopeful.
Have you compared the RF 14-35/4 output at 14mm to the EF 11-24/4 at 14mm? I have, and despite the horrendous barrel distortion of the RF 14-35 vs the nearly zero barrel distortion of the EF 11-24 at 14mm (better rectilinear correction and not at the end of its zoom range), the sharpness in the extreme corners is essentially indistinguishable.

That doesn't mean an RF 11-24/4 that requires correction of barrel distortion at the wide end will perform as well as the RF 14-35/4 after correction, but it does give reason to hope...

Canon EOS R5 Mark II in the hands of the lucky? [CR1]

Certainly according to DPreview's page on the R6ii:

It's possibly a "cut and paste" error from the Oly OM-1, because i've not seen those specific specs applied to the R6ii on any other spec list.
No Canon MILC has cross-type AF points. DPR is as reliable as ever.

As a former Canon user who made the leap to Sony, I've been very happy with my Tamron 70-180mm. Not saying it's perfect, but it's good in many ways and the size and weight suit me. I'll be very interested to see what the G2 version has to offer.

RF 100-500 Rear Gasket Replacement

I don't imagine replacing the RF rubber seal is any more difficult than the EF seals. I don't have an RF lens. On the EF lenses remove the mount screws, lift the mount a bit and work the old seal off, reverse the process to install the new seal. I have replaced a few over the years, always do when I replace a mount. I replaced the mounts on my 300/2.8 IS before I sold it and on my 500/4 IS (before they become impossilbe to get). The last EF seals I bought from Canon last year were $16.74 each.

Take a tour of Leica camera and lens manufacturing at Leitz Park in Wetzlar, Germany

Many years ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Zeiss facility in Jena, Germany. Although Zeiss-branded ILC lenses are primarily made by Cosina in Japan, the founder of the company, Carl Zeiss, started making microscopes in Jena in the mid-1800s. When we discuss things here like the Abbe limit or Schott glass, I am reminded that Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott worked for Zeiss in the late 1800s. Zeiss' research microscopes are still made in Jena, and it was amazing to see the production process up close.
Abbe was the partner of Zeiss. According to camera wiki, he founded the Zeiss Foundation that was responsible for the photographic optics. He appears to have been a fine man as well as scientist, and was against discrimination: "Ernst Abbe's founding principle from 1896 that world-view or ideological or confessional convictions were not allowed to be considered in hiring employees". Unfortunately, Zeiss threw in its lot with the Nazis in 1933 and used forced labour during the war. http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Carl_Zeiss
Their official history glosses over the use of forced labour https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/c...the_companys_history_of_zeiss-at_a_glance.pdf but it appears to have been pretty bad https://ymcinema.com/2019/10/17/the-dark-side-of-zeiss/ as well as other incidents https://slate.com/technology/2014/0...ecuted-inventor-rudolf-straubel-of-zeiss.html
