My impression is that a lot of fake / doctored images are not derived from pros, but rather from vox pop-type shots, which wouldn't be helped by this. However, in terms of limiting (I won't say 'stopping') the impact of 3rd parties manipulating pro shots after the event, this could be helpful.

It would also seem to require a lot of effort in checking authenticity, though, by publishers? Most of whom continue culling editorial staff ...

I was peeved when I couldn't find the bit depth information in the advanced user guide as well. @Neuro found it in the online specs website. Canon certainly left it under the *asterisk copouts :-(

I did some rough calculations and I think that the issue is the internal bus bandwidth... R3 can handle 30fps/14 bit/24mp which is about the same as 20fps/12 bit/45mp.The R5 @ 14 bit would be about 15% higher bandwidth.
Similarly, 30fps 8k raw (33mp) @10 bit video is also about the same bandwidth. 12 bit would have pushed it over the limit which appears to be ~11Gbps.
I can't see a logical reason why Canon would arbitrarily drop the bit depth for the R5 in ES mode otherwise.
Hopefully the Digic X version in the R5ii will have a different generation internal bus in it.

I wrote it because I'm convinced Leica M cameras have reached an insane level of pricing, no longer matched by an equal reliability.
If I spend about $9000 on an M11 naked body, I expect the reliability of an M3 single or doublestroke.
The M11, despite being a fantastic instrument, is miles away from it. If you read the complaints about the (sometimes!) need to carry a pocket knife to lift the ISO wheel so you can change the value, that's where the fun ends. I could also mention the freezing issues, the more than lame repair department (4 months), its legendary bills etc...
So, I believe that a Canon body might be less glamorous for the collectors, but certainly represent a better value and, hopefully, better reliability. And the fabulous M lenses could still be used.
PS: The Leica Q3 is a great camera and, in my opinion, priced adequately.
PPS: What I wrote about reliability isn't valid for the Leica M240. Not a single issue in 8 years, and I used and abused it...
PPPS: Canon, if you don't produce an M lens compatible camera, I might, perhaps, someday, if I find the time, jump ship.

Brilliant photos. First one is my favourite.

Sigma's APS-C lenses are desperately needed for RF-S....And for full-frame, Anything below 100mm is nice addition to the RF line up.

20mm f1.4 is probably not going to have a RF L version, so sigma should given a green light to make a RF version.

Looks like the 'up to 50% off' means less than 50% off in most cases. Only the Viewpoint 4 bought new gets that discount. Upgrading from PL6 to PL7 is only an 18% savings.

What case mode are you using? FWIW, I found the 5D4's AF tracking and accel/decel tracking to be a bit on the sensitive side at the default "0" setting - when I set both to "-1", my hit rate did increase slightly. Especially with a scenario like this where the subject would be moving at a constant speed without too much variability.

With RF-S 10-18 available now....I think going for that small lens is better than 15-30. 15-30 on R10 will become some standard zoom that's short and not bright

In that case, I retract my slandering statement

I have a front filter (B+W clear, typically, but B+W UV on some lenses), and I clean that with a Rocket Blower then, if needed, a LensPen FilterKlear. For a lens without a front filter, I use the blower and a regular LensPen. If more is needed, I have Zeiss cleaning fluid that I use with a PecPad.

A little dust on the front of your lens will typically make no difference in your images.

I was working on course material for a history of photography, in the process of which I was checking out a book by Tom Ang (who actually lives in my area). He had dedicated a double spread in the book to the early days of DSLRs and featured the D30:



Intrigued I thought it would be great to find one as a prop for my course, so I went on line and found one on eBay for $60 from Japan UNUSED! Further inquiry elicited that the rear LCD was scratched during unpacking, so the camera was dumped in a storeroom until they were clearing out to move. With nothing to lose, I bought it and sure enough it was otherwise immaculate. I found another body with a good LCD and got Canon to switch parts to put the two together and got them to check it - sure enough it was unused.
So, I took it out for a spin with the EF 17-40L lens and was amazed at the performance. With such big photosites, the noise was negligible even in very low light as this example demonstrates. Taken hand-held in available light in a very dark pumping room.

It was also interesting to see a video by the respected, and late photographer Michael Reichmann, doing a review of the camera. It is intriguing to see how it was seen at the time it was introduced. It is easy to look back in time and judge it in our contemporary context, but at the time it was the proverbial game-changer:

The Digic X Microcontroller SoC (that's not just a Microprocessor) family uses the same kernel features, but i assue the variants are basicly in the implemented subsystems like co-processors or specialized custom processing units on the chip. Well, a Pixel-Shift with a raw output would be great for me, but i assume, this needs to much processing load and consumes to much battery power. The R5 temperature development is well known since they was introduced into the marked and was several times a focus of a firmware revision. I would like to have such RAW Pixel Shift, but i also understand, that this needs more as just software hack.

I don't see it that way tbh. It's a notable achievement from a technical point of view, but it only impacts certain types of photography; I personally don't think I would get much benefit.

To tilt the line of focus from perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens.

For example, you're shooting high school football from the sideline and you want a photo showing the offensive and defensive lines engaging shortly after the snap. If you're behind the offense on the left side of their formation the end closer to your sideline is much closer to you than the other end. If the players on your end are the point of focus then the other end will be fairly blurry at f/2.8 (It's a night game and you have to use ISO3200 at f/2.8 just to make 1/800 or 1/1000 possible). Or vice-versa.

Now take a lens with sideways tilt (sometimes called swing) to the left. The "plane" of focus will shift to closer on the left side of the image and further on the right side of the image and more of the line of scrimmage that is angled away from you on the right will be in focus.

The reason I know this is because after my 70-200/2.8 took a nasty fall it had a pronounced tilt that was mostly to the left. I had to shoot around it until I could send it in to CPS.

Compare the grass on the lower left to the grass on the lower right. Then compare the trees behind everything on the left to the right. Autofocus was aimed on the sign attached to the shipping container in the center of the frame. [Apparently the EXIF info is stripped by CR. Canon EOS 7D Mark II + EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II. 70mm, ISO100, f/2.8, 1/5000. This was one of several test shots I included on a CD-R when I sent the lens to Canon Factory Service.]




CPS sent it back as sharp and straight, if not sharper, than when it was new. The description of the repair said "electronically adjusted". I'm guessing they biased the "neutral" position of the IS group. The reason I'm guessing that is about a year or so after that my IS starting acting up. When the camera/lens was held at certain angles with respect to gravity the IS would vibrate continuously and rapidly. Looking through the viewfinder made whatever was in the frame look like it was shaking violently. This progressed until there were ever increasing positions where this occurred and I had to send the lens to CPS again to get the IS unit replaced.

I'm excited to find out what they will do.
