Has anyone ever tried using Canon CN-E Cinema Primes with an EOS DSLR?

I have a bunch of CN-E Cinema Prime lenses for use with my Canon cinema camera. These are pretty amazing lenses.

I'm trying to use them with various full-frame Canon DSLRs, and I'm seeing the same problem on all of them (5D, 5Dm2, 6D, 1DSm3):

--The lens is recognized electronically, and the (fully-manual) aperture setting appears on the camera display as I turn the aperture ring.

--The camera switches correctly to manual-focus mode when the lens is attached.

--However, manual focus confirmation (using the currently active AF point) does not work on any of the cameras. You can focus very slowly, and the focus-confirmation light never lights, and no beep is heard.

Manual focus confirmation works on all 4 cameras if you're using a Canon lens with an AF/MF switch.

Also, there's an AF-ON button on most of these cameras, but holding it down doesn't change anything regarding focus confirmation with these CN-E lenses. For example, holing AF-ON might cause the current AF point to light up dimly (where it would light up more brightly once focus is finally hit). But focus is never hit.

The reason that I find this behavior surprising is that the CN-E lenses are "chipped" and have electronic contacts (which is what allows the camera to read the manual aperture setting).

I've read about "chipped adapters" for non-Canon manual lenses, to say, "Hey, I'm in MF mode," which will enable focus assist for these non-Canon manual lenses.

But these lenses are already chipped---by Canon themselves.

Canon Patent Application: Motion Blur Composite Photos

Depth map or mask?

Why not capture all the data and let the user "develop" it in post instead?
That would eliminate the need to make it "smart" and let the user identify objects or "pick" a "shutter speed".
I see this as the 'depth composite' features in the R3/R7/R6II/R8, you still get the RAWs, but the in-camera preview composite is useful to spot slow movements:

You can opt to spend a lot of time fixing that in post or try to reshoot the stack :)

ProGrade announces its first CFexpress 4.0 Type B memory card & reader

That is the highest sustained rate assured by the current standard.
VPG400:
It is smart of Canon not to assume any higher.
It would be pointless to have a faster CF Express standard without also having an increase in the standard for sustained write speeds as well.
I am assuming that there will be a corresponding VPG 800.
I don't see Canon upgrading existing cameras via firmware but I am hoping for that with the R1, R5 II, and R3 II.
Nikon already supports the full CFe bandwidth for writing files on the Z9 (and likely Z8), people report a much better burst speed when using cards that handle >1gbyte/s sustained writes.

And don't tell people what the 'V' in VPG stands for, they might faint after realizing that a body without any video related feature will have severely hampered still capabilities ;)

Travel tripods and the best light weight gimbal head?

Thanks Scott!

I'm still using a Gitzo G1228 "Mountaineer" tripod, the first (I think) carbon fiber tripod, that I bought in 1999. Amazingly, given how new the technology still was to this manufacturer, not only is it still in fantastic shape, but they don't even seem to have gotten hugely cheaper with time. Unfortunately I use this light leg set with a heavy Arca Swiss B1 ball head. I think there are far lighter solutions nowadays but my B1 works fine and is now too scratched up to sell for much. And at 55 I'm probably not going to live long enough to use up a new head...
I used a 1325 Mountaineer for a long time, 98 or 99 vintage. Still have the Arca B1 I used on it. I eventually upgraded, primarily to get updated leg locks.

Surfing small waves

Took the Rf 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 to the beach last month. Hurricane Franklin's swells were only chest high by the time they got to North Florida, but the boys got some exercise.

Canon & Reuters team up in developing cryptographic methods to authenticate photographs

Could we use this technology to prevent cameras from taking ducky-face selfies?
lol - now we're getting into serious CR details!

I'll add auto license plate blurring on speed trap cameras if you pay your local politician enough to the list!

The impact of Large Sensor Super-Smartphones on Low-end to Mid-range Photography

And I thought I WAS A BAD BOY snarky poster! --- Oh well !!! Meh! Photos are for PERSONAL ENJOYMENT! We don't all have to be Ansel Adams taking sweeping wide landscape shots of the Midwest Skies during a Thunderstorm! To me, I would rather NOT HAVE TO TAKE 12+ lbs of camera and lens gear with me on my travels! I'd much rather prefer one of the upcoming 200+ Megapixel smartphones that have all those fancy computational photography algorithms on them that fix-it-all-in-post for me! One single camera/phone for EVERYTHING is what I want! Hopefully, Canon, Sony and Apple very-soon-now will get off their technological derrieres and GIVE US WHAT WE REALLY WANT !!! i.e. Super-lightweight, ultra-high quality COMBINED large-sensor cameras and smartphones in an easy-to-use-and-carry package!

Snarky you are not, Harry! Provocative, yes, but always good natured.

Patent: Impressive super telephoto L zoom lenses for the RF mount

I know it's only pure speculation, but what are the chances of Canon RF 300mm-800mm f/8L coming?

Personally would not be surprised if Canon launches an RF 300mm-800mm f/8L instead of an RF 150mm-600mm f/5-6.3L, if they decide to release a lens in that “category”. And because the rf 100-500 would be quite close to the 150-600, I'm left with a feeling that perhaps they will go for the RF 300mm-800mm f/8L, if they decide to release one of them. Simply because it would be a bit unique (the Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 is quite old). Of course, the best would be if they release both, as a 150-600 is wanted by quite a lot of enthusiasts.
True but that I why I still think a 200-600 like Sony or a 180-600 like Nikon make a lot of sense because either one would be far different than a 100-500,
Knowing Canon they would go longer with a 200-700 or your 300-800 idea anyway.

Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM update [CR2]

Maybe I am underestimating the number of people using the more affordable Sony cameras for BIF but that could be because I do not know very many and those cameras just do not seem designed for it.
Other than the a1, Sony maintains a higher percentage at a much lower FPS.
All I care about is the number of shots in focus overall.
It does not matter to me if there are more out-of-focus shots when I get more in-focus shots.
It would be tough to calculate because, for instance, when the R7 misses more than a few shots it misses a lot.
Also, a lot of that has to do with the settings and comes from experience with the camera.
I always take @arbitrage very seriously when it comes to reviewing for BIF and bird photography in general. He has tried out the Sony A7R5 https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1785163/9#lastmessage and whereas the R5 is just about up with the A1/R3/Z9 for AF, the A7R5 isn't, though it is still good. Some of these naysayers about the R5 don't realise what a leap forward it was for Canon.

EOS R8 Images

I was surprised at how small the body is. The Vello battery grip works well. Interesting work around with the little shutter release cable. I recommend having at least 4 to 6 batteries with you. I was at the event for about 3 hours and got 2 batteries below 10%. Still getting used to it, but I'm a huge fan of the focusing peaking and zooming in through the EVF. I can't believe the R8 is this good for $1,500. I'm very glad that I got the CPL adapter, although I also purchased the regular one later on.

CompactFlash Association Announces CFexpress® 4.0 Logical and Physical Specifications

Current CFexpress v2.0 cards (the best ones at least) can throw 10 r5 full RAW frames per second onto the card even after the buffer is full. That's not a spec sheet figure, but actual performance of the best of the cards.[…]
That’s about 400mbyte/s, so the bottleneck is the R5, not the card.
The Nikon Z8/9 do seem to be able to get the full speed, so using those for testing would give a better impression of the cards performance.
For the R5 that’s a moot point, but for future CFe bodies it would be useful info.

Opinion: The difficulty facing Canon (and everyone else)

With the M50 you pushed the 'wifi' button on the side of the camera and it would connect to a pre-configured network. Fire up camera connect or cascable on your phone and you'd have the photo on there pretty quickly.

The R8 makes it nearly impossible to connect to an existing network, so you have to connect your phone to the camera network (and killing your phones connectivity in the process), move over the photo while hoping your phone doesn't move off of the in-camera wifi more than once and then reconnect your phone to the regular wifi.
I can only speak on the R6. I go to the Canon app and connect to the camera, select the photos and upload. It isn't as quick or glitch-free as it should be, but it works a lot better than I ever expected.
