Is it finally happening? Canon RF 50mm f/1.4 USM [CR1]

Is it, though? Canon did not seem to think so. They did replace the also-excellent EF-S 10-22 with the slower, darker and cheaper EF-S 10-18.
Like the EF 50mm f/1.4 Canon didn't update the EF-S 17-44 f/2.8. I think considering the resolution increases in APSC sensors, they would have updated it if it sold enough.

R5's eyepiece ridge works with weathercovers

What a great post, time to get my credit card out.

I was caught out at RIAT this year when I discovered the Canon ERC rain covers don't fit and ended up using them as expensive sheets of waterproof material. I can't believe Canon doesn't have an option for the R5 and doesn't have a BIG "Not Compatible with the R5" in the description for the Canon ERC rain covers. I wasted money on the medium and large and couldn't send them back as they were used.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II Specification make the rounds

It sounds pretty great, but I'm skeptical. Are they really going to cannibalize the R3 with a Stacked 62MP sensor camera that probably will do at least 20 FPS. Doubt it. Looks more like R1 specs.

Canon probably (correctly) thinks that they've already sold the vast majority of the R3s that they will ever sell. It's been on the market for two years.

Canon Speedlite EL-10 rumored for later this year [CR2]

When replaced with a MkII, the EL-100 will almost certainly get the multifunction shoe as well, but probably that replacement will be some time away.
It would be cool if the camera could power a small speedlite. Such as a hypothetical EL-100 Mark II. Just something small and portable not high power. But that won't be until years down the road. I wonder what an EL-10 would look like physically and feature wise too. The current 430EX speedlite is smaller than the version 2 was. It is also quite small compared to the 600EX series.

Canon continues its dominant hold on global market share for digital cameras

Ah, your last sentance is exactly the type of bullcrap that Sony folks always say. "Canon had to be brought kicking and screaming..." You have no idea when Canon started doing R&D into mirrorless. No idea. The M series launched in 2012, I believe. Their FF ILCs followed Nikon by a couple months maybe?
In fact, for the leader in a market it's a disadvantage to pursue the bleeding edge with commercial launches, but an advantage for R&D to keep pace with that bleeding edge. It seems that's exactly what Canon did – their APS-C MILC line was ready to launch once APS-C MILCs represented a substantial (but still minority) fraction of the market, and within 5 years of launch their APS-C MILC line became the global best seller. When Canon and Nikon launched FF MILCs, DLSRs still outsold MILCs that year and the next.

The fact that Canon has navigated the dramatic drop in DSLR sales and the relative shift of the market to MILC, while maintaining their overall market dominance and becoming first the #1 brand in APS-C MILCs and now the #1 brand in MILCs overall just shows their strategy was the right one, for them. For a company like Sony, that was not the market leader but a distant 3rd, the same strategy would not be optimal, and the fact that Sony is now a solid #2 shows that their strategy was also the right one, for them. Nikon, OTOH...:poop:.

Next step in tele - difficult decision - especially now in between EF and RF.

Very nice shots!

My only thought relative to my typical shooting is that I'm ecstatic if I can be at ISO1250, very happy at 1600 but usually find myself above and my typical scenario is 400X2 @F8 with ISOs ranging up to 6400. The 1DX2 handles the high ISOs quite well but of course it's only 20 MP so I'm wondering just how the R5 will compare since I plan to buy it by spring.

Jack
I'd wait for the Mk. II. That's at least what I'll be doing. And then, I'll decide: R5 Mk.II or R3...;)

Canon Patent Application: Fast APS-C Primes

I'm worried those EF-M lens might have flange distance that's too short, turning it into RF might end up a 24mm/f2. EF-M15-45 turned into RF-S18-45.
the difference in flange distance shouldn't make a huge difference there.
the lens can always sit a bit further back into the camera body another 2mm.

That being all said, I do wonder why Canon simply didn't move EF-M to RF-S .. especially the 22mm and the 32mm, not to mention the 11-22mm.

That least would have gotten me to consider an RF-S camera body - which with the way it is, it's in the not-a-chance-in-hell category.

I don't have much I can share (due to no model release from some portrait sessions), but I've posted a few test pics you can see here:

IS Mode for 70-200 f2.8 Models

For lenses with two modes, typically Mode 1 for sports. Mode 2 is for panning, so a sports exception would be if you're using a slow shutter speed and panning to follow the subject (e.g. motorsports). In Mode 2, the lens automatically detects the axis along which you're panning the lens and only compensates for motion orthogonal to that axis.

The great whites have a Mode 3 that is often used for sports, which is like Mode 1 except the IS system is active but not actually stabilizing the image until you press the shutter – that helps with following erratically-moving subjects while looking through the viewfinder, where IS can sometimes 'fight back'.

Canon Patent Applications: Internal Camera ND filter

I can't fathom how "so no one else will come up with it" comes into the picture.
So no-one else can patent something close enough to what you have come up with, such that you would have to pay them if you choose to use it in an actual product in the future. Or to 'block' off the use (and patenting) of relatively small variations (which are relevant to patent attorneys) thereby preventing direct steals of your innovation by the opposition.

Canon Patent Application: Grip based active cooling

Not only that.
As long as there is no cage on it, it could transition back and forth pretty seamlessly.

The grip's removability would be just the thing for me. I very seldomly need cooling, but when I do, I do. Like shooting in direct sunlight on a hot day. I assume that this'll be more necessary with future increases in video resolution, but I've found that anything beyond 4k for me is overkill. I don't think there are too many stills + little bit of video guys like me who are going to be worried about heat dissipation for 12k video.

But knowing that a body can be quickly made into a real video rig is useful peace of mind.
