600 or not to 600

Personally, I can shoot handheld with mine, and the MkIII/RF version is a bit lighter. But by ‘shoot handheld’ I mean walking with it carried on a BlackRapid lefty strap and raised for an occasional shot, as I do when shooting passerines.
I'm pleased you clarified that. I had thought that you were like the guy holding the Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8.

Canon officially announces the long rumored RF mount Cinema Prime Lens set

Looking at the photos of the new lenses, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for something more like a shorter body or something that set the RF line really apart. These are the same as the EF version just with a permanent RF mount. I've been holding off on getting any more cinema lens having heard this rumor for the last two years. Seeing this announcement and looking at the specs, it feels like getting the EF versions is all-around better since they are cheaper ($1000.00 in some cases), you can add EF-to-RF adapters that have built in filters, and they would be backwards compatible with legacy cine cameras like my c200.

Canon Patent Application: Lightweight Telelphotos

I owned, for a couple of years, a Canon 400 f/2.8L that was made before the IS version came out. It was very heavy, but sharp as a tack. Just excellent. I think it took until the second version of the IS lens to equal that sharpness. It was extremely good.

Not very portable, however. If I were shooting sports, slap that lens on a monopod and it would be great. Ditto for birds that hold still (with a tripod). But it was decidedly not the best option for handholding. I can hand-hold my 500/4 II here and there, but it also isn't practical for general walk-around birding.
I think the measure of sharpness of a big white...is how doe sis fare with teleconverters. Both my mk1 and mk2 seem very sharp with a 1.4x TC with hardly any quality degredation. With a 2xTC is still excellent. However droppping a 1/3rd of a stop to f6.3 and the sharpness is amazing.
I think my mkII is a wee bit sharper than my mkI, however that might be the slightly better AF system. Either way, both are exceptional lenses.

50mm SHOOTOUT! Detailed Analysis of the Hand-Holdability and General Sharpness of the RF50/1.8 vs. the RF24-105/4LIS

I don’t know why and many people have used that restriction to keep mentioning the Canon hammer.

I can’t really think of a technical reason for it, it might be the typical ‘If you care about quality, use full-bitdepth mechanical shutter’ thinking.
I need a much longer electronic shutter speed too! 30 seconds please!

Is another f/2 zoom coming from Canon? [CR2]

We have been told that Canon is planning a second RF mount f/2 zoom to “compliment” the remarkable RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, which is one of the best zoom lenses ever made. The source didn’t know the focal length of the rumored lens, but did say to expect it some time in the first half

Seeing the current $600 instant discount on the RF 15-35/2.8 IS made me wonder if there is something in similar focal range that they are planning.

update: 12 hours later and that deal is now gone. Hell of a deal.

Goodbye R5

You have taken and produced many very good images and I'm sure you'll continue with the R50.. look forward to seeing them..

and I hear you about the bulk/weight, its not something I lug around daily and at times demotivates me, but it shines in so many ways I can't give up on the R5.

Best of luck in your change of direction and let us know how it goes.

The Sony alpha a9 III appears for certification

No matter what Sony releases, one rarely sees an A1 or A9 in any sporting venue. A crazy nonsensical menu system put them in the rear view mirror. Seriously, one can count them on one hand. If you see one at all.
Given that Sony provides cameras to the AP, it seems likely there would be plenty of them at major sporting events. Maybe you’re talking about minor/local sports, or maybe your counting skills need a little work.

After nearly 2 decades Sony hasn't made a dent in market share and actually lost ground. Now that Canon is releasing it's own stacked sensor devices, Sony mirrorless has basically been lapped.
Making asinine statements like that does wonders for your credibility. Even if numbers are hard for you (that counting problem I mentioned earlier), the simple fact that Sony took the #2 spot away from Nikon should make it obvious to anyone that Sony gained market share. In fact, Sony had 26% of the camera market in 2022, up from barely over 10% a decade ago and more than double Nikon’s 12% share.

Canon has made gains in mirrorless and is now the #1 MILC brand by units sold, but they’re ahead of Sony only by a very slim margin.

Try to get your facts straight, that really helps if you want to have an intelligent discussion. But then, maybe you don’t.

GoPro officially announces the HERO12 and Max Lens Mod 2.0

Sad that the video capability is better than R6.

I have the Hero11 and is really fun to use. The battery is awful but, hey, it's cheap, just buy bunch of them.
I thought the video was that interpolated pixel from low pixel sensor, but no, the video quality is quite good. Comparing its 4K to R6 4K, you can see some significant difference, but for the price, it is very much acceptable. The video quality is far better than Samsung Galaxy S23. The video format still trouble some when you want to edit it in Premier Pro (slow processing time). Anyway, I might upgrade later in Hero 13 maybe even though the subscription includes a hefty discount for new camera.

SmallRig has launched the rotatable mounting plate kit for the EOS R5/EOS R6 series of cameras

I carry the R5/R7 + RF 100-500 on a BlackRapid strap hooked to both the tripod and and camera sockets to spread the weight but the R7 and RF 100-400 are so light I find it fine to carry them with just the camera socket.
I also do this by find it more comfortable to hang upside down by a tripod socket on the lens by my side.

Firmware version 1.8.2 appearing on serviced EOS R5 cameras

Does every repair come back with the latest FW release? I can understand it from a certain perspective but the user may (for whatever reason) prefer a previous version.
Would Canon save a settings file and then reload it after upgrading? Would it be true that a setting file is specific to a FW release and may not be compatible with an upgraded FW version?
I sent an R3 to the Canon Factory Service Center in Newport News, Virginia twice this year. Both times the camera was returned with factory settings. There was no change to the firmware since the camera had the latest firmware before the service. So save the settings to a card and also note the settings in a text file just in case the settings file fails to load.

Which Canon DSLR works best for manually-focused EF lenses through the optical viewfinder?

Another update:

By installing the Eg-S Super Precision Matte focusing screen in the 6d, my manual-focus lenses (including my Canon CN-E Cinema Primes) become perfectly usable wide-open. There is not focusing prism, but the viewfinder is good enough that I can find solid focus in most situations.

I haven't installed the Eg-S in the 5dM2 yet, but I'm expecting similar benefits there.

And my goodness, the 6d can take beautiful images with my 85mm CN-E Prime at T1.3 (f 1.2 equiv):
