Canon Launches MS-500 – The World’s First Ultra-High-Sensitivity Interchangeable-Lens SPAD Sensor Camera

Ehhh, not necessarily, but do you think R&D is free? Novel tech costs what it does NOT primarily due to manufacturing (though that’s of course one factor because yields may initially be low, defect ratio may be high, processes not yet optimized, fraction of manual labor high as production lines not yet automated, and small quantities not benefiting from exonomies of scale…) but due to the need to amortize all the research and development costs incurred before a single finished product was made! Economics 101. Expert scientists and engineers don’t work for free.
The other considerations are market size and what costs the market will bear. For example, R&D costs for cystic fibrosis (CF) treatment drugs are actually lower than for heart failure (HF) prevention drugs (the latter need multiple Phase 3 trials with thousands of patients), but CF drugs list for hundreds of thousands per year while HF drugs list for a few thousand per year. CF is a small market of very sick people who desperately need meds, HF is a large market of people with high risk but who otherwise often feel pretty healthy and may not even think they need treatment.

Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM confirmed, likely in Q4 [CR3]

I would quibble the wording, as the quality is the same, you've just discarded the edges of the image. But clearly it's a much lower resolution image. Fwiw I use crop mode a lot but I tend only to view on my phone and share downscaled for social media so even 7MP is more than enough for my purposes.
A sharp 7mpx close up shot usually gives excellent feather detail. I also don’t understand the difference between cropping in camera and in post.

Canon continues development of ultra-wide RF zoom lenses with latest patent

The Sigma 14/1.8 is E mount only (maybe EF in the future??) but the Sigma 20/1.4 is EF so can be adapted for R mount.
Are these the 2 lenses that you are referring to?
The Sigma 14mm f1.8 Art (Sigma barcode number: Canon EF Mount 00-85126-45054-0) is avaible in EF mount so can be used on a RF camera. It is the Sigma 14mm f1.4 that is only available in the L mount and Sony E mount.

I've made a tripod mount for the 600/800 RF lens

Nice design and great work! I’m in the polymer industry and suggest you consider something a little stronger impact wise than ABS however. It isn’t bad persay but I would be concerned if it got a shock of some sort. Once ABS begins to fail it can fail rather dramatically. Polycarbonate would do the trick and be plenty strong….if you can 3d print it.

Macro lenses are intentionally designed to be optimized for close distances. It shouldn't be surprising that means compromise in performance at infinity.
Depends on what you mean by compromise. Soft corners, for instance, I cannot accept for landscapes. The corners at infinity of my EF 180 are mushy, no matter which aperture I use, even if "corner focused".
A slight drop of performance is usually the case with most macro lenses, and acceptable. What I need is kind of a universal lens, since I hate changing lenses when hiking in the mountains.
I must say I've been spoiled by my leica M and R macro lenses (M 4/90, R 2,8/60, R Apo 2,8/100). All three are tack-sharp even in the corners. This is why, after having heard so much praise about the RF 100 L, I hope it will produce excellent results at infinity too!
The only trouble with the Leica 100 Apo being the lack of AF, otherwise...

28mm pancake areived

@Kiton why do you hate the adapters? EF 40mm with adapter stills very compact.
when I first got my R5 I had a 28-70 2.0 on one and a 70-200 2.8 on the the other with adapters, and really did not like the feel more than anything else.

Today I have an assignment with some politicians and will bring the 40 on the R6.2 and see how it feels, it seems to be alomst the same size as the 50 1.8.

R7 Rolling Shutter counter Intuitive

The sensor in the R8 and R6II has a 14.5 ms readout speed, slightly faster than the R5. Personally, I still use EFCS so I get the full bit depth in my RAW images (the R3 is the only Canon body so far that outputs 14-bit RAW with full electronic shutter).
In my experience, the R5 in EFCS mode is much worse at tracking erratically moving birds (like hunting swallows) than in full ES mode. Maybe that's less relevant with hummingbirds.

Canon Inc. releases Q2 2023 financials

"In the Imaging Business Unit, as for the interchangeable-lens digital cameras, unit sales increased due to steady sales of the EOS R6 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera, EOS R7 and EOS R10 APS-C size mirrorless cameras released last year. The new entry-level EOS R50 and EOS R100 models, launched this year, were also well-received in the market. The market demand for some models even surpassed production capacity. Unit sales of lenses surpassed those of the same period of the previous year thanks to strong sales of RF-series interchangeable-lenses."

Double digit growth is massive in almost static market (+1% YoY) so the big question is which competitor(s) is dropping market share but ultimately it is about profit per model. I can only imagine that sales revenue and profitability will increase if Canon can remove their supply chain issues

The JPY has depreciated ~15% against the EUR but the Canon Europe pricing still remains high so there should be great profitability in that region

Imaging inventory value levels are up ~35% and increase of 20% in days of inventory for 1H YoY. That shows just how much supply chain issues for some items are impacting sales.

Imaging sales is up 15% and operating profit by 57% 2Q22 to 2Q23
Full year projection is higher than previously forecast with sales up by 14% and operating profit by 20%!!
They don't split out operating profit by camera vs industrial but sales is up 12% both for 1H and full YoY projection

The lithography equipment is also interesting with 195 units forecast for the full year => average value USD8.3m each.
Compare that to ASML with 50% gross profit and full year sales growth of 30% including higher demand from China even though export regulations restrict Chinese sales to older technology. Unit sales of ~500 in 2022. Highest price for latest gen tech is USD200m/machine but this could be list price that no one buys at.

Thoughts on the folly of buying an exciting camera of the future but then being stuck in the past.

You could be right about better seals. And the lens- tubes are more rigidly guided (constant gaps in mount).
Yet, I often wonder what would happen if I retracted an extending lens which has been used under rain. I usually wipe it dry before doing so.
I've done it; it had no noticeable effect but I was mortified.
