I see a lot of softness on my monitor, no grain.

Same issue with my 5D3 and service from Canon.

Every shot taken was grainy. Lens used 400mm 5.6 L. I used the 24-105 the other day outdoors (after picked up from service) and strangely I had no issues with graininess.

Since recomposig sucks (visual-vacations.com dixit), I was just wondering how it all happens on a 6D.

well... i certainly can perform either way (re-compose or select one of those focus point) if you can lend me a 6d. i bet that canon 6d is much much better than a camera that i am using everyday for experiment purpose which is canon 30d (note: i am using select focus point on this one).

for ai servo, if i still remember correctly, canon suggests to track your subject starting from center focus point for better result.

one of a renown photographer who prefers to use re-compose technique is bambi cantrell. it is just the matter of technique that you have to train yourself when preferring to use it that way.

I don't think Av changes the ISO unless you have it set to auto-ISO. I can't remember the default but you probably have that set for Av?

In Live View, if you're in Aperture Priority, the camera will automagically select a different ISO. Shoot in full manual and it's not a problem. This is the on the 5D2, remember.

good to hear someone responds here and the site is alive and kicking,

i have a friend who has high expectations from CF cards, he wants to know if they are able to snap photos while shooting a video with out any notice, on a 5dm3too, i yet to see that on any DSLR but i also never tried it with the newer cards, i do see a freeze in video for a whole sec and usually you shoot about 27-30 frames a sec so i will have to try it myself since i will have a lexar 32GB 1000x cf card in my hands within a week, also a 64GB /95mb SD card so ill try those.

If anyone here has tried to take photos while shooting video with a fast CF card do share the info, as far as i know with the SD card i have which is a sandisk 64GB/45mb atm it freezes the video for a sec.

You can get full page address labels at staples or Office Depot. You can just stick it to a piece of plywood or on the side of your neighbors house that you don't like. I paste them on foam board but any rigid surface would work.

I'm sure that the Canon stores will be as sharp and glitzy as the Apple stores and the salespeople will be well trained on Canon products. The stores will probably be better stocked with Canon products than the small independents as well.

But I doubt that Canon stores will be carrying aftermarket and third party merchandize like Sigma, Tamron lenses, or Nissin flashes, or aftermarket batteries. The small accessories like lens hoods and caps, shutter release and flash cables...they'll all be premium priced Canon products, not less expensive aftermarket brands that work just as well.

And when the customer is trying to decide on a camera, the saleperson is not going to show you a Canon and a Nikon or some other brand. He's going to show you a Canon and a Canon. Not two comparable cameras at similar price points, but two different quality level Canons at different price points.

My greatest concern is the harm this will do to my local independent camera shop..the place I go to when I need a roll of seamless, or some sort of wierd cable or bracket or lighting accessory, the place where I can try stuff other than Canon brand.

So if they open one of those stores in my area, I'll go there, enjoy the glitz, try out the cameras, pick the brains of the salespeople, but when I decide what I'm going to buy, I'm going to keep my purse closed and head over to my local camera store and spend my money there. My local shop is a small shop, off the beaten path and is crammed with all kinds of gadgets and accessories. The owner told me that if Canon opens a store nearby, it would probably kill his business. I would hate to see that happen.

I hope Canon does not do this.

What you say is absolutely true. However the world does not work that way. The big fish eats the small fish... Sad fact.

Men's volleyball...now there is something you don't see too much of down here in the south.

I am stuck watching the girl play club ball in converted warehouses. This last weekend they had the courts netted off from the parents so I had to sit in one place all day and stick the lens through the net. The zoom came handy as I was not able to walk around for different angles. But how b.o.r.i.n.g.

I just recently purchased a 5D classic in November, and I was coming from a Rebel, and I can confirm that there is a huge improvement in image quality. Even with regards to ISO, the 5d looks much better than my t3i at higher ISO's so I guess ISO quality depends on what you are comparing it to. The hardest part to get used to was all the settings and switching everything around, because the UI is definitely dated, so there is a bit of a learning curve in figuring out how to quickly adjust all the different settings.

I also had the 50mm f1.4 and 17-40 f4 to work with, so I got some great results, and I definitely noticed a richness and depth that I wasn't getting before. It was definitely an improvement in IQ, just a more polished look and better colors than my t3i.

I also would say that $450 is a pretty good deal for a 5d classic that is in good shape. When I purchased mine, I was watching ebay and they seemed to be going from the mid-$500's and up depending on how they were packaged, and who was selling the camera. B&H and Adorama were selling used 5d's for the $600 to $700 range.

One caveat is that it is heavier and bigger than my rebel, and it doesn't do video. So I've kept my rebel as a backup body to use when I want a lighter/smaller camera or for video.

My point was that the sun icon by the city name is part of the camera time setting, not a GPS function. It's on the same menu screen as 'GPS functions' but a different line, meaning it's a camera function. Or with the GP-E2 connected, is there a second place to set city and 'sun' that comes up when you highlight GPS functions and press Set? (Why would the GPS setting need a city entered, isn't that the point of a GPS?!?). Assuming there's only one such setting, leaving the sun/DST off is the way to go, since we're currently on standard time.

Yes, I have the 600/4L IS II.

I know Samyang cinema lenses, if you've read my previous posts till the last line I mentioned them twice, I own the 14mm f/2.8 not cinema version and I think it's absolutely stunning...and about the moustache distortion which is not that strong and don't know if present also in the cinema version, well that's totally fixable with PTLens.

Using my 5d3 I seem to find the noise is higher than i would like or expect. I have seen others post that they have low noise with ISO as high as 10,000. Honestly, it doesn't look a whole lot better than my 20D. I am shooting with low ISO, anywhere from 100-400 in raw format. Importing with LR as DNG in case that is important. Any thoughts?

I have both for my 6D. However, if I were shooting crop, I'd pick up a Sigma 30, and sell the 50/1.4 to fund a 40STM.

I use the 50mm f/1.4 when I need the low light for events where I can't use a flash, or I want extreme depth of field.

However, at almost every other point, I've got the 40STM on my camera. I like the slightly wider focal length. It's also incredibly sharp. If I'm shooting an event with a strobe, I'll go with the 40STM over the 50mm every time, set it to f/4 and you've got IMO the right amount of DOF, and super sharp images.

I also like that if I want to travel light and without my camera bag, I can throw the 40STM in a pocket, and keep the 70-200 f/4L IS on the 6D. It covers most of the range I need, and I don't need to worry about bag checks or the weight.

Also, another nice bonus is that the 40STM is cheap enough I don't even bother with a lens cap for it, so it's always ready.

Finally, despite thinking that us Canon owners are the only ones with a "body cap" lens, Olympus M43 users have an even smaller option! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893289-REG/Olympus_v325010bw000_15mm_F8_0_Lens_On.html Only downside is it's a fixed f/8 with the focus set permanently hyperfocal.

If you plan on declaring it at the border -- you will have to pay tax anyway. The only thing you save is about $20 of shipping as shipping to the US is free and shipping to Canada is about $20.

Hey dude.

I had exactly the same problem.

It worked the first few times, and then it stopped randomly!
I haven't figured out how to bring it back.

I've twiddled with the Live view settings, in particular the
- AF mode
- Silent mode
options, to no effect.

I just set the AF mode to quick, or something, and I can tap on the screen on a large rectangle (like the LV one) and then take a photo and it will AF first before shooting.

If you find a way to get it to work again it would be good!

It worked on a Sony Xperia Ray with 2.3.4 and then it stopped working. Then I upgraded to 4.0.1 and it still didn't work.

On an unrelated note, have you manged to get the content sharing from the camera working? To like, upload directly from the camera to facebook et al?. The manual says I have to register the camera with canon something gateway but then the software won't talk to the camera to push some setting cos some certificate is invalid.

*shrug.

Maybe it will work eventually, but, yeah, that's my AF button work around.

Some fun features of the app some people don't know, cos it's not obvious!
- If you tap the picture it rotates it.
- The AF button can be slid up to the take a photo button.
- You can select several to save(to phone)/delete by pressing the weird looking button bottom left.

with the 5Dmk3 the absolute best lens for shooting your kids in what you describe is the 40mm f2.8 which you have

its very light and short so easy to shoot one handed even indoors your 5dmk3 is good at high iso to keep shutter at 1/80 or 1/100 sec its vey sharp at f2.8 it focuses accurately and it has a 250mm minimum focus distance so very easy to shoot if the kids are right on top of you.
Any of the zooms with the longer barrels are going to be alot more cumbersome to engage with the kids especially if youa re playing with them as you pretty much have to use both hands with the 5D3 and 40mm is very easy to shoot 1 handed

Yes, you're right, I've already discovered this, 40mm is very useful

Many wonderful pictures from seemingly unremarkable lens. It gets right in there, easy to shot one handed, easy to aim blindly, and somewhat wide angle helps with aiming errors. Gets less attention from kids, so it buys me another minute or two before they notice and attack camera (gimme, gimme) ...

BTW, I thank everyone for thoughtful answers.

I haven't made any decision, but I'm really blown away with quality of responses and I appreciate differing viewpoints, as they help me reexamine my thinking. I will continue experimenting before making any decision...

I have the ThinkTank Retrospective 20 and the Tamrac Rally 6. What I like about the Tamrac Rally series is the bags weight is 1-1.5 lbs. less than the same size bag in the Retrospective series.

When I'm walking around all day, the ThinkTank bags can start to feel heavy, so I now generally use the Tamrac Rally because it is much lighter.

cool and a 1/4 of the price i just ordered a rally5 to see how it goes
