Canon SL-1 as travel camera

I messed with one before I bought a T4i to back up my 6D. I really wanted the wireless commander and had the SL1 had it, I would've bought one. It's small and a fun little camera. And I have my small camera, with the EOS-M. I suppose there will be an SL2 someday and it might have the wireless commander so I'll probably end up with that eventually... ;D

Canon Leads in Sensor Tech

My point is: declaring one company ahead or behind on sensor technology without considering all aspects of the various offerings is a selective, skewed assessment.

If I understand you right you mean that canon leads the sensor Tech

My qestion will therefore be . leads over who?
canon are not the leader i high resolution or best performing sensor and parameters as like DR, color resolution or high iso reproduction

I think he was saying that anyone leads is selective and or skewed. It all depends on your criteria. And is a pointless.

1Dx is the best sports/action camera ever made. 5D3 is a poor man's 1Dx that has neither speed nor IQ.

Somehow I think you're not going to get away with that!

distant star I think the lack of response is a credit to the restraint of our fellow members to ignore a bit of a daft comment. 8)

Another 6D v 5D3 body battle...

thgmuffin said:
Does no one mention how the 6D silent shutter is significantly better?

How is the 6D silent shutter "significantly" better than the 5D3's version? My 5D3 is pretty darn quiet...

As for a choice between the 2 it was easy for me...5D3 as I shoot the kids volleyball and soccer games. The 5D2 just could not handle VB and I suspect the 6D would struggle as well.

Canon behavior at launching new products

daniela said:
As I have an actual problem with my new Camera, I wonder, if Canon will act as it does at releasing the 70D.

Announcing the Camera, delivering a few Cameras to professional Canon stores after some month of being announced - and delivering it to other stores after an long "announcment time".
For me, this is just to keep the price high by making the product rare.

My japanese Girlfriends think, that this will be done by all new "highlights" from Canon to milk us custoerms as much as possible.
Maybe the 7D2 and an big MP Camera will be announced and released 2-3 month later and kept rare 6month. Rumored in by them. But who knows if this won´t be true?

What do you think?
I don't know where you live but in major markets Canon products are released fairly early ... if you live in a place like Qatar (where I currently reside) new camera products are officially released several months after their USA launch and that too at twice the price of the US markets. But in either case I don't think there is any conspiracy here by Canon.

Canon 60D locks when i shot

neuroanatomist said:
I believe silent shutter takes the shot on the first press, but leaves the mirror up until the button is released. Sounds to me like mirror lockup is enabled.

Yes, I am confused in my old age. Mirror lockup is what I was thinking of. Silent shooting does require two presses of the shutter depending on the options and how long the shutter is held down. The first press takes the shot and locks up the mirror, the second returns the mirror.

Mirror lockup is most likely. Occasionally FoCal leaves my camera with mirror lockup enabled, and I have to turn it off.

6d Highest Usable Iso?

It all really depends on how big your going to present the photo. I found that a 100% crop on screen will be basically noiseless up until around ISO 2000, with a bit of noise reduction. If I'm not printing a wall mural or poster I wouldn't hesitate to go way above that. I had a 60D before and was amazed at the difference in noise level. I think its the biggest difference.

Basically, on the 60D I felt obligated to keep the ISO low which limited my creative decisions. On the 6D, I don't worry about the ISO, it's not limiting.

I Repaired my own 50mm 1.4, and so can you!

Thought I'd update the thread with my success today. I replaced the aperture in a 24-105L and it is working flawlessly. Total amount spent - $418.18. Not bad considering it was my first L lens. One thing I learned while disassembling it is that it has two apertures. One normal aperture for stopping down, and another secondary aperture that closes down based on focal length (to keep the aperture constant throughout the zoom range (without it I'm guess this lens would be a 24-105mm f/2.8-4). The standard aperture in the 24-105mm is 8-bladed, the secondary aperture is 9. Just thought you would all find that interesting.

EDIT: I used these two videos to help guide me through the process -

Thanks, that is interesting because it answers a question that I had in the back of my mind for a long time, ie how a constant aperture zoom works. I always suspected that the aperture is stopped down automatically at the wide end but its surprising to me that there's a second aperture in there, actually!

Smoking flash

.
Thanks for putting a lot of light on this smoking issue!

Hope it wasn't a non-smoking venue....

I had a Metz hotshoe flash a few years ago and it occasionally let off a barely discernible puff of expensive smelling smoke. It did die eventually. I suspect it was smoking related. Since then I've stuck with Canon 550, 580 and 580exII Speedlights and while their health has been mixed, they've all been non-smokers. Their health related issues more likely resulted from over-work and high expectations while hooked up to over-spec external batteries.

Worse was a 2400ws Profoto floorpack that self-immolated a couple of years back...much smoke, a positively alien soundtrack, fried board and stinking exploded capacitors. Nasty.

Frankly I'm amazed that flashes stand up to the workload as well as they do.

New tripod suggestions

I have the Gitzo GT3542LS with the bubble lever plate and a Wimberley Gimbal II head for my 600 f4 IS II (with extenders). A combo I am very happy with. I have never felt the need for longer tripod, ref the XLS version. Sometimes When I travel I use the RRS BH-55 ballhead, with the panning clamp, because it is more versatile. That is the best ballhead I have ever touched and it works well also with the long whites, tough not as good as the gimbal head.
