With 61 AF points, do you really need re-comp?

Actually yes sometimes, because i personally only use spot focusing so either i manually move the focus point, or i'll recompose..
Do not use recompose with a fast prime like the 50mm f/1.2, at least not, unless you are at f5.6 or less.

The depth of field is very shallow at wide apertures, and you will be out of focus most of the time. If you must use recompose, sell the 1.2 and get a cheap small aperture lens that will give you more depth of field.
Thanks for the responses guys. apologies but it's all new to me. I've got a 5D and 2 lenses: 50 1.2, and a 24-105.

When you say you only use spot focusing, is that just the one little dot for focus? I have been using the one with the adjacent points unless I really want absolutely precise focusing..

It's been great delving into the world of semi manual photography. I've never had to specify AF points before (Sony a350 just used to leave it on auto) so while it's been a challenge thinking about where to focus every time i shoot, it's such a joy when you get it right.. Especially on 1.2 =)

Canon 35 2.0 IS vs Sigma 35 1.4

[The busy background in this fairground image is in the distance.
It does not matter (much) where it is. It matters how much it is blurred. In this case, the "transition zone" goes more or less to infinity. In the shot with the beer bottles, the background is pleasantly blurred and it is just 3-4m away, if I remember well.

In the boy with the Cowboy hat shot (Sigma), the background is very far and the bokeh is still bad. DPReview has nice portrait shots with the Sigma where the background is close but the main subject is much closer, and the background is well blurred.

Focus a 34/1.4 lens wide open at 4m, or so, and you are trouble with the background. Focus it even farther away, no problem. :)

Beginner considering a canon 40D for sports photography

wsmith96 said:
I would like to solicit opinions here. I shoot a lot of sports pics of my kids. I'm currently using a rebel T1i which takes great pictures, but I usually miss some great action scenes due to the slow frame rate of the camera. I was looking for used cameras that would allow me to maintain my lenses (EF-S) and I found a used canon 40D that looks gently used. The price is great at around $350. Of course, I would love to have a 7D, but I'm watching my pennies lately and can't afford it today. So, what would you do? Would you save up for the 7D or go ahead and not miss this spring season's shots using a 40D?

Thanks.
The 40d is a wonderful camera, much better IQ than a 50d, it also has 14 bit color. If the price right it's very useful with great color, great in camera jpg.

With the Yen plunging, will we see price drops now?

International corporate finances are complex, they have operations all over the world. I guarantee that currency fluctuations (which continually change) play some part, but thinking that end price will change due to that is simplistic.

This is no doubt correct, but my point is: where was this sentiment when the True Believers were defending Canon prices as clearly being due to the high Yen to low Dollar exchange rate?

Yeah I brought it up back then and nobody paid attention. Companies charge what the market will bear, end of story.

I know this because I work in a parallel industry (unrelated but very similar) to Canon, and in fact my company is lot like them too. Trust me that the marketing dept. primarily is setting prices, and they have no idea about currency. That is handled in finance and at the corporate level, far removed.

Start saving your pennies for either the efs 17-55 2.8 IS or the efs 15-85. Buy lenses (preferably used) for your current camera and don't concern yourself with a future "what if".
I've struggled for some time to decide which lens to buy...
...It's a wonderful lens, only very rarely I need shallower DoF than it can give
...important thing is to decide what your needs are
FF happens eventually after spending too much time here...
+1 on that (had a big dilemma, bought 17-55, love it, sat on my camera almost like glued on and yes, photography is cheaper if you only shoot certain things and get lenses for just that)...
and that happened to me, caught the FF bug after spending too much time here and went FF sooner that I thought I will... now I need to see if I can sell the 17-55... so maybe it is worth a thought, I guess it depends on what is the "later on" in the OP (three months, three years?)

Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D7100

Thanks for all your advices.

I almost made up my mind to continue shooting with my 40D for the time being for stills. As for video, my dad will let me use his 5D MK III or ID IV(too heavy for me) if necessary - for school and community projects.

He has 7 L lenses now - 24 1.4L II, 50 1.2L. 85 1.2L. one TS, 2 zoom lenses and a huge 300 2.8 and has recently acquired a Sigma 35 1.4 and a Samyang 35 1.4( same range and seems weird to me but he has the spare money to spend).

I will definitely go for FF and buy a refurbished or lightly used 6D in a year's time.

Elinchrom Ranger Quadra

Yeah, sure, there are alternatives for sure, and people are free to choose. Remember the Einstein has very variable color temp at different settings, that can be a real pain. And they are three times the size of a quadra, the quadra I keep mounted to the Octa (which is the coolest modifier ever with sooo many options in one) or I can keep the Quadra head in my pocket.

Anyway, it's only healthy to have options and in europe where I live no one sells Einsteins and very few even know about them, but Elinchrom and Profoto (which is swedish) are HUGE. So the availability and service/support is non-existent for Einsteins and very nice with elinchroms.

And to answer my own prblem which kickstarted this thread again. I just resat my battery pack and the Slow and Fast Recycle works as normal now, love it.

100 2.8 II ... What lens is this?
He probably means the 100L which is pretty much a V2 of the original 100mm macro except much better...

I would probably suggest the Sigma 50 f/1.4 and the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 II. If you can afford the 85 f/1.2 II then take that because it's a jawdropping piece of glass!

Another option would be the 85 II and the >600$ Canon 70-200 f/4 lens. That's a great piece of glass as well, razor sharp and inexpensive but the weight and range are quite attactive. Not an f/2.8 lens but capable of great bokeh as well.

There are many more lens combos I could name but for what your looking that's my 2 cents ^^

Can we all send a complaint to Canon to fix the AF-Assist focusing on the 5D3?

hey take the credit, man you deserve it. many of us were in that thread but frankly it really does feel like that thread convinced Canon to act. it took while, and the silence promoted a lot of amusing speculation and even some harsh words from time to time, but in the end the message got through. wahoo go team go

Canon will have 20% off on their refurbs starting this Sunday, so thats another place to check. The Adorama deal may be better though.

How do you know in advance? :o
Another poster on CR who gets the info posted it. He has done this before.

Be sure to read all the posts ;)

Thanks, that was very helpful of you. Hopefully I'd be able to snag a 24mm.
By the way, I was just talking to CLP- they have the 5DIII in- but only 10% off of the refurbished price.

Independent Film: Compost - 5D mkIII

Compost
http://www.stockhammedia.com/2013/02/22/2152/

I learned the reason, yesterday, why a pile mulch begins to "steam" after sitting a few days. It's the process of becoming compost =-) so since I've produced the video "Mulch" I had no choice but to produce a new video called "Compost" which is simply focusing on the vapor rising from the compost as bacteria slowly converts it to a substance that is great for spreading on your flowers =-)

Original Mulch Video:

Bright Light , Bright Light (Gizmo Voice). 4real i need your advice

You already have the flashes, just not sure why you went with those combinations. The 600EX-RT has radio capabilities, but the yongnuo's do not, you could have gone with a 580EXII for less $ and be able to get the exact same use in this case. No worries though since you can use RF transmission with your 600EX on camera to trigger the other two. So really all you would need is a setup like dpedro mentioned, two flash stands and two umbrellas, and you have a decent 2-3 light setup (3 if you use the one on camera as well).
That umbrella kit from b&h is a decent deal and a great start. Plenty good enough for modeling shoots.
