Start saving your pennies for either the efs 17-55 2.8 IS or the efs 15-85. Buy lenses (preferably used) for your current camera and don't concern yourself with a future "what if".
I've struggled for some time to decide which lens to buy...
...It's a wonderful lens, only very rarely I need shallower DoF than it can give
...important thing is to decide what your needs are
FF happens eventually after spending too much time here...
+1 on that (had a big dilemma, bought 17-55, love it, sat on my camera almost like glued on and yes, photography is cheaper if you only shoot certain things and get lenses for just that)...
and that happened to me, caught the FF bug after spending too much time here and went FF sooner that I thought I will... now I need to see if I can sell the 17-55... so maybe it is worth a thought, I guess it depends on what is the "later on" in the OP (three months, three years?)

Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D7100

Thanks for all your advices.

I almost made up my mind to continue shooting with my 40D for the time being for stills. As for video, my dad will let me use his 5D MK III or ID IV(too heavy for me) if necessary - for school and community projects.

He has 7 L lenses now - 24 1.4L II, 50 1.2L. 85 1.2L. one TS, 2 zoom lenses and a huge 300 2.8 and has recently acquired a Sigma 35 1.4 and a Samyang 35 1.4( same range and seems weird to me but he has the spare money to spend).

I will definitely go for FF and buy a refurbished or lightly used 6D in a year's time.

Elinchrom Ranger Quadra

Yeah, sure, there are alternatives for sure, and people are free to choose. Remember the Einstein has very variable color temp at different settings, that can be a real pain. And they are three times the size of a quadra, the quadra I keep mounted to the Octa (which is the coolest modifier ever with sooo many options in one) or I can keep the Quadra head in my pocket.

Anyway, it's only healthy to have options and in europe where I live no one sells Einsteins and very few even know about them, but Elinchrom and Profoto (which is swedish) are HUGE. So the availability and service/support is non-existent for Einsteins and very nice with elinchroms.

And to answer my own prblem which kickstarted this thread again. I just resat my battery pack and the Slow and Fast Recycle works as normal now, love it.

100 2.8 II ... What lens is this?
He probably means the 100L which is pretty much a V2 of the original 100mm macro except much better...

I would probably suggest the Sigma 50 f/1.4 and the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 II. If you can afford the 85 f/1.2 II then take that because it's a jawdropping piece of glass!

Another option would be the 85 II and the >600$ Canon 70-200 f/4 lens. That's a great piece of glass as well, razor sharp and inexpensive but the weight and range are quite attactive. Not an f/2.8 lens but capable of great bokeh as well.

There are many more lens combos I could name but for what your looking that's my 2 cents ^^

Can we all send a complaint to Canon to fix the AF-Assist focusing on the 5D3?

hey take the credit, man you deserve it. many of us were in that thread but frankly it really does feel like that thread convinced Canon to act. it took while, and the silence promoted a lot of amusing speculation and even some harsh words from time to time, but in the end the message got through. wahoo go team go

Canon will have 20% off on their refurbs starting this Sunday, so thats another place to check. The Adorama deal may be better though.

How do you know in advance? :o
Another poster on CR who gets the info posted it. He has done this before.

Be sure to read all the posts ;)

Thanks, that was very helpful of you. Hopefully I'd be able to snag a 24mm.
By the way, I was just talking to CLP- they have the 5DIII in- but only 10% off of the refurbished price.

Independent Film: Compost - 5D mkIII

Compost
http://www.stockhammedia.com/2013/02/22/2152/

I learned the reason, yesterday, why a pile mulch begins to "steam" after sitting a few days. It's the process of becoming compost =-) so since I've produced the video "Mulch" I had no choice but to produce a new video called "Compost" which is simply focusing on the vapor rising from the compost as bacteria slowly converts it to a substance that is great for spreading on your flowers =-)

Original Mulch Video:

Bright Light , Bright Light (Gizmo Voice). 4real i need your advice

You already have the flashes, just not sure why you went with those combinations. The 600EX-RT has radio capabilities, but the yongnuo's do not, you could have gone with a 580EXII for less $ and be able to get the exact same use in this case. No worries though since you can use RF transmission with your 600EX on camera to trigger the other two. So really all you would need is a setup like dpedro mentioned, two flash stands and two umbrellas, and you have a decent 2-3 light setup (3 if you use the one on camera as well).
That umbrella kit from b&h is a decent deal and a great start. Plenty good enough for modeling shoots.

*UPDATE* EOS 70D is Coming, The Future of Pro APS-C Will Change

The review was in the latest issue of Popular Photography. I'm sure the noise is the factor in their resolution test (not sure if it's an "MTF 50", like Lensrentals uses to test lenses...but surely it involves some kind of test chart or target...of course that would mean the lens' sharpness gets factored in, which seems like that would be undesirable.)

Here is their test of the 5D3 from July 2012. I can't find the 6D, it's possible it's not on the website because it's in the current print issue, and they don't want it on the website yet...I don't know.

Btw, I was just being sarcastic in that other thread, your pics always look great to me...I guess I just cannot abide anyone who refuses to shoot above ISO 1000...it's like they're a girly man or something! Hahaha...

Weird ettl ec behavior - is this just me?

Depends on how you define RGB-metering. The iFCL-capable cameras are actually dichromates, not the best color sensitivity, but a rough idea instead of color blindness. Basically they can detect red and blue, but green and white look the same to them.

Ok, didn't know that, thanks - I'm always learning a lot here :-)

Canon EOS 1D X tethered via LAN?

Tethering via LAN or Cat 5 cable use allows for a really positive lock to the camera and cheap and common cords in endless lengths. I just received my new 1D X (2/2013) and I have tethered every opportunity previously with the 1Ds MkIII etc.

The problem always was the weak connection to the camera and even a small tug can lead to a disconnect and at times requires a whole reboot of the computer to get the software/camera to talk again. I actually like EOSUtility for all it's functions and that it's free. It's much more than a shutter release.

The speed of transfer via Cat 5 from the 1D X seems to be comparable with a USB cable to the Mac, But the connection of camera to computer via the Wizard is taking 2 minutes 20 seconds - an eternity during a break to reconnect for any reason. USB can take 10-20 seconds and that feels bad but 2 minutes?

I'll most likely continue using USB unless I can speed up the connection initialization.

In time I'll figure out manual settings which might speed things but since little exists on the subject of how to and settings up outside of the Wizard I'll post here anyway. I know it's an old topic.
