There's nothing special about this image, but it has a good combination of rather dark shadow and much brighter highlights. My 1D X arrived on Monday, but just before sunset tonight was the first time I could take it out for a spin.

The photo was taken at ISO 12,800 and 1/200th. Most of the softness that is visible is due to a thin plane of focus or JPEG compression or slight motion blur, or all three. It's amazing for ISO 12,800. Update: the photo is a 100% center crop from the full 18 MP image file.

Another image: the "X" on my camera wants to say "hi"-- (this photo wasn't taken with the 1D X, obviously):

As an Aussie, I find this thread (esp the modified sign) so funny! ;D

And as someone who used to live in London for several years until about 10 years ago... [yes, I eventually moved to greener pastures... Romania... then back to Australia 5 years ago....] well, I found it funny an underground station could / would state DSLRs are not allowed. Then the additional post about this being a museum (with the explanation) made sense.

About the Canon 40mm f/2.8 - pretty much all the reviews (both pro/site reviews and user reviews) I have seen and read about this lens indicate very positively. I had the Canon 50mm f/1.8 mkII but was never happy with the AF, nor the quality of the bokeh in many situations. But the AF (inaccuracy - esp in low light, sluggish speed and horrible noise)

Probably out of frustration, and partly out of totaly 'being in love' with Canon's USM... I 'vowed' to myself that I would only get a lens that has true USM (or equivalent eg HSM) for a 50mm prime. I've seen too many reviews with problems about the Sigma's AF erratic nature (as much as I see that lens has amazing potential with it's sharpness and wonderful bokeh). I believe it can be 'hit or miss' in terms of getting a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens that 'gets AF right' with one's camera body. I don't want to take this risk, and I've had issues with Sigma AF before (on an ultra-wide, though I have praise in other ways for the Sigma 10-20mm EX HSM)

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 doesn't quite cut it for me with the 'micro USM'... plus most copies are not sharp enough / contrasty wide open. The 50mm f/1.2 L is overkill for me, and it also has 'speed' issues and focus-shift phenom. The STM focus mechanism seems a decent alternative to 'true USM' - and I would probably really like to use the 40mm STM and 18-135mm STM lenses for a day out in the field (variety of conditions) to 'test this new lens AF system out'.

40mm on an APS-C is just a bit too wide for my likes. 50-60mm would probably be my ideal for a 'walk around prime' for subject isolation. When I need more focal length, I use my 100mm f/2.8 non L macro (where I find the USM focus is really good and fast enough, esp when I use the 'minimal focal distance limiter' - though some ppl complain the 100mm f2.8 (non L) macro slow to AF (but I don't - especially not on my 7D!) And I can use my 70-300mm L USM IS as a 'candid portrait lens' (it has great bokeh, and awesome image quality!)

f/2.8 is also not fast enough for a prime where I really want the background blurred, the subject needs to be too close (eg distorted faces). I could see the 40mm f/2.8 being more useful as a 'a lightweight street lens' on a FF. But as I don't plan on moving to FF (at least not any time soon... and I expect I'll always keep / have a APS-C)... and really do love my Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS on my 7D for most 'street shots' that are in decent light, or don't require fast glass.

That means, I can see the 40mm having a lot of potential for some people, but for my style of shooting, I'm still looking at a 50mm - 60mm fast prime (I have ruled out the 60mm macro, because I really do want faster than f/2.8 ). If a 50mm f/1.8 with better (read "true USM" or STM, or equivalent) lens comes out, that will probably be the last lens I feel that I 'need' to complement my existing lenses, and fit into my lens arsenal.

Ok... a bit 'off track' - but I do actually like what I see Canon doing with their new 40mm pancake. Applause to them, for quality and price, and thinking 'outside' the usual square! Hopefully this will herald in more 'new lenses' - and one that is right for me.

Generally, you actually extend it by 1 year. You get a 3 year total warranty for $109, but the first year is the Canon Warranty, if you used a American Express card, they give you the 2nd year warranty at no charge, so you are really paying for that 3rd year.
Most issues will happen in the first 3 months, by the time the camera is 2 years old, there will be very few units failing.

Its in the "ambience" setting along with such settings as warm, cool, vivid, intense etc etc. Been playing again, and its a bit rubbish tbh, much better with 5 minutes of post processing (as is the inbuilt sepia and monochrome for that matter) so as they say, if it sounds like a gimmick and looks like a gimmick then it probably is a gimmick!
However, you did give me the idea of playing with different colour washes in raw, as like you say there are some very interestng ones out there, so you've given me an idea for my next "project"

Hey everyone,

I'm changing my workflow slightly for speed and professionalism due to some clients wanting photos sent out and having a photobook printed professionally. However, I have to use TIF files right now, converted out of Adobe RAW to TIF, then to DVD, then to printing. Does anyone else do this and if so, a reputable company? For weddings I would hire someone to do this and simply gave them my flash cards. Thanks!!

The 135L is the second best portrait lens in canons line up with the 85L tied for the same place. I prefer the extra compression over the 85L, but the 85L gives a more dreamy look in its rendering. The 85L is also 1000$ more.

The only better portrait lens I've ever tried is the 200 f/2L but thats 7000$.

The 70-200 makes a good third place IMO, It doesnt have that extra stop of light and you'll need more room to reach 200mm to get equal seperation from the 135L.

I cannot recommend the 135L highly enough, Its tack sharp wide open and affordable. ;D

I bought the last "in stock" 5D3 $3399 Sat night. I was curious if they would keep the discounted price so I watched it. The discounted price stayed for a couple of days but the shipping times increased from immediate to 1-2 days to 2-3 weeks. Perhaps once they get more in stock they will offer it for $3399 again.

My 5D3 should arrive tomorrow - can't wait ;D

I have that issue as well, and recently found that my fingers are losing their feeling from diabetes, so I cannot feel the tiny buttons. The G1 X was better, but still too small.
I'm going to need to buy wrist straps for all my cameras, but if I dropped my 1D MK IV with 100-400mm L, it would break my wrist

Nope, it's Canon ;D I've focused on the eyelash and the focus is on the right place.

Didn't realize you could use a Canon lens on a Nikon body without some extra adapter getting in the way

Does anyone actually think it was the 'photographers' idea to merge the 1D & 1Ds line. Of course not, it was a business decision to take two lines into one. Although 1 series cameras are the flagship and what people read about in magazines, and good for marketing, they are not the money maker to canon. Why tool two assembly lines when you can tool one, and charge more to help with the R&D costs. Hence "we merged the camera lines to one super duper camera!" Ta-Da!!!!

At the end of the day canon sells Rebels through to 5D's to make money and 1 series probably cover costs because of lower production runs and make for good advertising. Average consumers ogle 14 fps, they don't read that the it is achieved with mirror lock. Rebel owners don't ogle over f8 focusing etc.

But at the end of the day we need consumers to buy lots of consumer grade cameras so the R&D can continue to build 1 series cameras for the pros and serious camera enthusiasts. In the meantime we take a hit during economic deprived times where companies are most interested in staying afloat, which doesn't put them in a spot to cater to specified groups that don't have the camera sales to justify another line.

At the end of the day make as many product lines that are financially feasible and target the biggest markets. They are corporate company and have to focus on the bottom line.

Sucks at times but that is business.

Exactly. Of course b&h would have more on order than actual Pre-orders; eventually everyone who Pre-ordered one will get one. Question is when. I consider myself somewhat fortunate in that I missed the first allocation by about 5 hrs; I SHOULD fit in in their next shipment...I hope

Yes. I remember that video. I think they were showing how to put together a 500 4L. I still remember that I was working crazy on a weekend and watching that video was quite a pleasant break.

Final assembly of the cameras appears to be very labor intensive and require skilled and detail oriented workers.

Further you are looking at a zoom, which is also not designed to give it's est performance at the wwide and long ends but in the middle. These are compromises, lenses of convenience, not sharpness.

Actually I wasn't talking about finding a zoom but a prime and was expressing my frustration with the new pancake and the new 24mm IS and 28mm IS being so soft at f/2.8 versus f/4. Unfortunately the 24mmL is out of my price range and a 50mm is too tight on a crop camera for my needs. The only mention I made of a zoom was stating my EFS 15-85 was sharper at f/4 than any of those 3 lenses I tried.
Thanks for your input. I am coming to the conclusion that I will need to consider a lens faster than f/2.8 so that I can shoot it stopped down.

I understand about your budget but spending half of the 24 f/1.4L II's cost to get one of the new 24mm IS or 28mm IS is anyway a waste of money. They cost double or even triple their real value. The 35mm f/1.4L could be a decent choice (and cheaper than the 24 1.4L II) although not the same mm and maybe still higher than your price limit.

Was in Canada a couple of years ago, taking pics when it was -24°c with a Canon 450D and kit lens... both held up fine, being dragged around all day, in and out of cold/heat... even though its isn't meant to be used below 0°c... you'll be fine!

The very helpful people at Eye-fi have been supporting me with this same issue. This is their advice which I have followed and have not had any issues since...

See if this helps...

Try to format the Eye-Fi card on your computer with a 3rd party software from the SD association:

When you go to format the card, make sure you first select Options, and set the Type to 'Quick Format'.

I hope this helps. Pls let me know if you still have issues with the Err 80.

Dear All,

Thanks for all your helpful and very insightful input. At the end of the day, I decided not to rent a lens. The wedding was this past Saturday and I ended up assisting shooting the whole day. I shot solo from 7:30 to 11:00 until the paid pro arrived. When he did, I introduced myself and told him I was a friend that will assist in shooting; he was very kind and professional about it. I made sure and did the best I can to stay out of his way. I basically shot at angels and spots he was not shooting from. The church as a bit dim for my 24-105 (my 430 flash wasn't too helpful for the a dim church with pointed high ceilings). Looking back, I was happy with the overall experience given this was my first full shoot, albeit on the unofficial assisting level. However, if I could I would probably wish I had at least 2 more lenses at my disposal: 35L & 85L or 70-200 2.8. I did learn so much though, especially looking at my shots and realizing what I should've done and not done on some of them. Thanks again for all your help!

If it sounds too good to be true...it is. There are lots of scam sites, if the price is substantially lower than mainstream sites (B&H, Adorama, etc.), well, they say a fool and his money are soon parted.

Actually, I was watching the 5D Mark III very closely. B&H had them in stock and were selling them a few days before Adorama. I don't know why this is. I believe Norman Cameras had them first. 1D X will be completely different.

I just found this article comparing the Canon 650D, 600D, Nikon D5100 and Sony Alpha 37:

If you look at the lower graph, the dynamic range of the 650D looks a lot like the Nikon counterpart with only a gap of 1EV. However i'd wait for independent confirmation of the results and for techradar to recheck their data because the labelling for the 600D is wrong (pink curve is also labelled 650D) and it seems that the 600D has the JPEG curve in the TIFF result. So we wait for the techradar people to sober up and redo the graphs.

On DxOMark the 600D scored 11EV and the Nikon D5100 scored 13EV at ISO100 screen resolution. If the 12EV figure is true that would be a modest step forward.
