Drop-in filters for long lenses

The screw-in drop-in filters could very well be discontinued. I found a new-in-box from a 2nd hand retailer in France a couple of years back. He doesn' have it in stock right now, though.
I was looking for an ND3 as well at the time. I now have a clear, an ND3, and a C-POL.
Yes, I bought a Kirk lens foot from them. They wouldn't ship to New Zealand, but I got it via my brother-in-law in Switzerland.

Canon Researches More High Quality Zooms

I hope Canon doesn't release a 50-150mm F2.8 L while Sony just released a F2 version of it. I believe the next zoom will be the rumored 200-500mm (or was ist 600mm?). After that Canon should imo release:
- 70-180mm F2.8 STM (or similiar)
- 70-150mm F2 which weighs less than Sonys offering. If not, make it 50-150mm
- 24-300mm L superzoom (or similar)

In one thread there was a rumor about a wild UWA zoom. Maybe a 14-28mm F2? I don´t know, I don't believe it is imminent.

After that, we´d need mkii of:
- 28-70mm F2 (give a big fat diet)
- 24-70mm F2.8 (put it on a diet, improve it like Nikon did, fb compensation, make it faster... maybe it the version rumored lately to feature VCM motors)
- maybe 15-35mm F2.8 mkii (see above)
I'm currently waiting for a holy trinity of f2.0 zooms for buying RF lenses, ideally in this order and internal zoom.
  • 50-150 f2.0, starting at 70mm would make it significantly less useful. Ideally I would even prefer if it could start at 35mm like a 35-135mm to skip the 28-70.
  • 15-30mm f2.0 or even 16-35mm f2.0 for using as both a Landscape and street photo beast.
  • 28-70 f2.0 MK2 or even better 24-70 f2.0
When you see the 50-150 f2.0 from Sony and 35-150 f2.0-2.8 from Tamron Canon has to release something to compete against it. And I can't see them having years and years to do it. Especially as it's a very useful lens for wedding photographers.

TTArtisans Announces the TS 17mm F4 ASPH

Just testing this on the GFX100S, where it has enough coverage, but unlike the RF/Z mount versions has no ability to change the shift axis direction.
So either a showstopper or irrelevant.
Limited to ±8mm of shift, but that is impressive on a [small] MF sensor
Still need to see how it compares with my 2009 TS-E17

Uploaded quite a few [full res] examples to the MF forum at DPR
This gives a good feel for the coverage [hand held 3200 ISO ~f/6.7]

Canon EOS R50V Teardown and Disassembly

"just about the easiest camera that they’ve taken apart."

Canon has long been working on automated/robotic camera manufacturing. A simple design means more robots and fewer humans during the assembly process, reducing costs.
It definitely makes sense that Canon is optimizing for robotic assembly to cut costs and improve consistency.

Features I Want to See in the Canon EOS R7 Mark II

Anyone else notice the radio silence on the R7/II? I think Canon is at war internally between (I) those who see the R7 as an "any lens telextender" and want it to have a full-size R5 body and (II) those who have used the R7 as their main camera since it came out and just want a BSI/Stacked sensor with the controls left where they are. Two different audiences - and while group I may have more money to spend on each camera, group II represents more users - including me.
You have a nice theory, but very unlikely that it is correct. The design of a camera is a long process, decisions about size, layout and buttons of the R7 Mk II have been taken and implemented quite some time ago. These are not discussions/ decisions that take place in the last months before the release of a new camera.

The posts on DPReview and Petapixel have details about the process of designing an new camera:

Nikon Teases its Z Cinema lineup of Lenses

Nikon has created a new Instagram account for its Z mount cinema gear called ‘zcinema’ and immediately showed off an upcoming lineup of lenses that certainly are cinema in appearance, with what appears to be focus and iris (aperture) gearing. Nikon’s Aihara Takashi talked to DCW about this, and Nikon seems to be going all […]

I expect these lenses to be high end at mid end prices, around 5,000~6,000 US$ a piece, T1.5, very fast and silent AF capabilities using their new AF motors, top class image quality. They will want to appeal to photographers also hence the AF capability even if they come in more cine like packaging. My guess is that optically this is basically a full line up derived from the technologies used in the Noct/Plena lenses. Sort of SX lenses above the S line.

What Features I Want in the Canon EOS R6 Mark III

R6 III specs that I want:
  1. Passive venting
  2. C-Log 2
  3. Improved IBIS
  4. Tally light
  5. Shutter angle setting
  6. Full size HDMI port
  7. Pricing at or under $2,700 USD
Things I don't care about as much (but they would be nice):
  1. Higher pixel count
  2. Higher dynamic range (certainly not a decrease though)
  3. False color
  4. Brighter LCD
  5. Improved sensor speed
  6. CF Express B
  7. Open gate
I understand we probably will get less than what I want at a price higher than I am comfortable paying. Expectation readjustment likely to commence on November 6th.

Shutter Count for R6, R5, RP, R, R100, and maybe others (free)

The freeware app APT – Astro Photography Tool (free) worked for me when I tried it with DiG!C 6/6+ and DiG!C 5 processors. I have no idea if the shutter count feature works with DiG!C X cameras, but the app says it can be used to control all of the R series cameras for tethered astrophotography.

It's listed at this post from Camera Troll which aggregates several apps that can read the shutter count on various Canon cameras. The Camera Troll page is Swedish language, but Google translate works just fine to see it in English.

Thank you, you made my weekend. I was actually searching for a game online through which I can easily make money while sitting at home and I found Sweet Bonanza game and when I was looking for it online, I also found link to your post.
Thank you, you made my weekend.

Canon Looking at Superzooms Again?

[...]I also had a lot of fun with Kai Wong and his nerdy companion Lok Cheung, but that's over since now about ten years. Afterwards, when they split and Kai W. went to UK, I lost more and more interest... I think it was their special show relationship as antagonists that made these presentations so entertaining.
Lok is also in the UK now, they have teamed up a few times the past year.

EOS R5 Tech Help

Canon UK have just had my R5 for the past couple of weeks and returned it with no fault found. I've just messaged them tonight and have copied the message below because I'm sure some of you with more knowledge of the R5 may be able to point me in the direction of a solution. I'm sure its something simple I'm missing......

"My camera has just been returned from repair under ticket number: XXXXXX and it has the same issue that I sent it with. It may be something simple that I am missing but the issue is that I suddenly started getting the Blue focal spot when using any lens (100, 24-105, 70-200). I have checked and double checked that I am in One Shot AF and I'm using AV mode, so I am definately not in Servo. I should be getting the green confirmation as I have done for the past 3 years. I haven't altered any other settings, to my knowledge and have tried resetting the camera - to no avail. I've also checked all the lenses are in AF and not MF. What else can it be please?"

Thank you for any advice.

CIPA August 2025: Signs of Correction

North Korea, China, Russia and the USA on the same list. Isn't this sheer madness?
The reality of my own experiences coming in and out of the USA is that it’s extremely unlikely they’ll want to see your phone. It’s never happened to me, my wife, or anyone else on line near me, so I think it’s pretty safe. But the problem is that you can’t be 100% certain. We’ll see what happens with everything when the orange man is gone.
