The Canon EOS R7 Mark II May Be a Big Departure From the Original

There is a Group 3, of which I am one, R5/R5ii owners who like the R7 as a complement to our full frame with slightly better reach and useful with some lighter lenses. We are ones who want the R7 to have the same ergonomics as the R5 series and I presume would be candidates for an R7ii.
Group 3 also includes R5/R5 Mk II owners who did not buy the R7 because they did not like the ergonomics, viewfinder and electronic shutter performance.

Canon R4

And why would Arabic numerals count by that logic? That's not native to Japanese either. The 5dIV is called the "five dee mark four" which in Japanese would contain the word. Other Japanese companies don't seem to avoid the number too much. Nikon had a D4 and a J4. Sony had a PS4. Fuji has an XT4.

In any case, number 4 can be pronounced as both shi or yon in Japanese. The latter seemingly preferred due to the death connotation of the former. But for the same reason, the use of the number doesn't seem to be avoided by Japanese companies to the same degree as Chinese companies.
Mark IV is spoken as "Makū Fō". Same goes for the EOS Kiss X4 which is spoken as "Ekkuso Fō".

However although most names are spoken like English, Canon and also some Chinese Manufacturers tend to avoid unlucky main numbers with a 4. OnePlus for instance also skipped their model 14 phones and went straight to 15.

R3II in '26 and R1II earliest in '27/28?

Well, by history (Canon 1-series "flagship" history) the only thing I'm pretty sure of is that we will see R1 announced in late 2027 to mid 2028. Because that is a camera Canon always want to make ready for the professional sports-shooters at the Summer Olympics. The 1-series' release schedule is tightly bound to that event.
Canon doesn't seem to believe that high resolution is needed for the sports photographers (and personally I tend to agree, though I'm not a professional sports photographer 😉).
I don't know if R3 was the start of a new series. Maybe the R3 was a one-time model to try some new technologies (Eye-Control, Smart Controller and stacked sensor), before rolling it out in R1 and R5II? But if we see a new R3, I cannot imagine it getting the sensor from R6III. I would expect it to get a stacked sensor again.
I don't think Canon thinks global shutter technology is ready for prime time photography yet, but if we get it, my bet is it will be in the R1.

But that is all my guesses without knowing what kind of technologies Canon has cooking in their labs. Or their strategies. But my guess is probably at good as anyone else not having inside knowledge 🙂

The Canon PowerShot G Series May Live On

make it with premium features at a premium price and photographers will buy it as their secondary camera when they are size limited but unhappy with the IQ or handling of their phones.
¡Exactamente! A role as a secondary camera when space/weight is limited (such as, but not limited to, travel) or as a close-up option when you're loaded with a long lens and need a close up option in case the action moves in close, or, as a main camera at the ready when conditions don't permit being loaded for bear. And as you rightly said, always when IQ is important (which is always a consideration for photographers, not iPhone snapshooters.)

Can we get Zebra's?

Thanks for the info.. I agree I wish it was available in stills mode and not only in video.. My camera buddy that shoots Sony says its available in stills so that he can see what's blown out and not have to take a test shot. How do we voice this want to Canon?
I'm guessing they know but for some reason haven't made it available. Occasionally, I have received a survey from Canon, and the last one did ask about features desired in the future.

What happens after the R63 announcement?

... I have signed up to be notified when I can pre-order. I am assuming that paying for the camera up front is part of the deal with a pre-order? ...
I would never ever choose advance payment on any shop, especially on the internet. Even if you pay with a credit card or else that has an insurance.
Every reliable dealer I know (in Germany) accepts payment with shipping.

Warranties: Is it worth it to get the extended warranties?
Extended warranties are typically just additional insurances that increase the time of warranty on product defects but not more.
Depending on the amount of gear you want to ensure it is better to get a dedicated ensurance for that.
I have an insurance, that covers theft, dropping, breaking, lost luggage and most things you can think of expect gross negligence.
Expect an annual fee of 2 to 3% of the list (!) price of the ensured products for something like that.

Exploring the History of Innovation: The Canon EOS 6 Series

"Entry point for FF" at $2K+ does not equal "budget entry point for FF" and barely $1K.

When the 6D debuted at $2K+, there were plenty of $1K and under budget DSLRs.
When the RP debuted at $1.2K, there were fewer sub $1K and under budget DSLRs, and the floor was higher due to inflation in the intervening 8+ years.
About your other message: you did reply to 5 of my messages, which were all on the same topic... but they were in different threads.

Well there is one entry point FF at any given time. Who are we to decide what price is considered to be "budget"?

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III is Canon’s Next Full-Frame Release

I have a 6D now and I was just trying out the new R6 Mark III and the R5 Mark II at the Hunt’s show. I’m disappointed how small the Mirrorless bodies are. Sure I could use a battery grip but I don’t like using the grip all the time on my 6D such as when I doing street photography. Why are the bodies smaller but the RF lenses are about the same size as EF glass?

Canon to announce ‘major’ new firmware for the EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II ahead of CP+

Canon you are shameful how can you put the 4k oversampling at 60fps in the r6 mk3 that has no high temperature setting and no air intake and not put it in the r5 mk2 which costs much more?!? But wake up and do this damn firmware update and give the 4k overcamoyed at 60fps on the r5 mk2 !!! You're ridiculous!!!

"Change or Charge Battery" Error or Bug with Canon R5 Mark II

I thought I'd wade back in after sending my R5ii into Canon for a second time. Again, they replaced the printed circuit board, and checked the sensor, firmware, etc. It arrived just before heading back to Churchill for another season of photographing polar bears. For the most part, the new mother board seemed to work well. The camera didn't crap out (totally), and the battery level didn't drop super fast. On the other hand, it wasn't as cold as last year so I may yet see a return to previous challenges. What did happen on a regular basis is the dreaded dead battery alert - however popping it out and back in while the switch was in the on position, got the camera up and running again. I often shot between 350 and 480 frames as well as a fair bit of video each day and almost never changed battery.

A colleage believes the huge venting on the mark ii has something to do with it so he tapes his up in the winter and that seemed to help in his case.

I've spent a ton of money to avoid the problem and I hate throwing more money but I can't risk a camera dying on my photo tours. I've bought a dummy battry to run off a Dtap if necessary as well as a second R5 mark i body (since I know that seems to work in all temps). In January, I head back up when it drops to as low as -50C/-58F. My old 5Ds laughed at those temps, and my colleague has been using his R5 in those temps for several years. Fingers crossed the mark ii still works. I'd like to use my R5 for time lapses and my mark ii for photos.

R6 Mark II vs Flashpoint lights

Thank you. I thought I'd read a rumor concerning compatibility issues at one time. I'd like to upgrade to the R6 Mark III, so was hoping somebody who uses Flashpoint would chime in. Nothing against Canon flashes, I just want to use moonlights. ;) Thanks again.

I use Flashpoint/Godox regularly, but I don't use the newer cameras regularly.

Canon at Salon de la Photo 2025: Insights into Market and Products

My "normal" shots are on my flickr page (see signature). You can see a few where I have used my EF8-15/4.
The youtube clips I have seen show crazy stuff with video slightly clipped top/bottom (16:9 vs 3:2) so getting used to it will be fun (and painful). Slight movements will drastically change the composition.
You can't have you fingers around the grip for handheld.
Similarly, I think that I will need to use a horizontal extension to avoid tripod feet being in frame unless shooting vertically.
Sorry for the delay, I was on a photo trip. Great images, David! I love in particular your humpback whale image, beautiful.

*** for R series cameras

There are multiple (recent) threads about using *** to geotag your photo’s.

See: https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/threads/***-issue.44271/#post-1018833

I use a Garmin *** device to create a tracklog and use the Map module in Lightroom to add the coordinates from the tracklog to the images. This works fine when the time on your camera is in sync with the time of the *** device. I use the Camera connect app to sync the time of my camera to that of my smartphone (after some time the camera clock needs re-sync to remove the usually 2-3 minutes difference).
