R6mkiii questions.

I just received my first mirrorless camera, and I would like to use this thread to post questions as they pop up. I do not have any SD cards at the moment, so I cannot play with the camera too much yet. I do have some micro SD cards and an adapter, but I discovered in the user manual that it was not recommended. Of course, "not recommended" is not the same as "DO NOT USE A MICRO SD", so I was curious if this is really something to not do, even if it is to just have the ability to take a few pics while I am waiting on the regular SD cards to arrive???

Katharine Burr Blodgett: Inventor of non-reflective coatings for glass?

I actually wasn't that concerned about being correct/right and more concerned with sharing something that I thought others might find interesting - which is how a lot of social media works. I think there have been enough others that found it informative to have been worthwhile. If someone wants to argue about whether something is right/wrong, fill your boots while I get a beer, sit back and watch some tiktok.
Thank you for succinctly describing the post-truth world.

200-800 lens hood

The effect of filters on the telephotos seems erratic.
Even with the easy to clean L-series lenses that have the 'fluorine' coating (fluorocarbon, really, but Canon doesn't want to call it that), I use a clear filter. I have no problem cleaning a bare front element at home with the proper tools, but often when out shooting I will just rub the filter clean with a microfiber cloth. No rocket blower to get the fine particles off (and with moisture on it, they would not blow away anyway). I've scratched a couple of B+W filters that way, and those are far easier to swap out than a front element.
The effects of filters on telephotos puzzles me. A B&W filter that caused no problems with the EF 400mm ii and seemed fine on the RF 100-500mm degrades noticeably when on the RF 100-500mm + 1.4xTC.

Canon R6 Mark III: A Filmmaker’s Perspective (Review In Progress)

I will be doing a similar format on the photo side of things starting next week.
Thank you very much for your Work. Reviews like this are crucial for my work, since i cant test every camera myself.
I work as a Salesman in siwtzerland for the Visuals Groupe, and selling cameragear / also for the broadcast industry.

Having sites like this, is very helpful to me, since we mostly only get the technical details for the cameras from the companys.

Did Canon See the Writing on the Wall with the RF Mount?

I think you missed the rather LARGE point that eventually you wouldn't be able to afford anything made in China, unless you are a rather wealthy American. And that is assuming that trade relations normalize in the meantime, too. Demographic collapse in China is baked in--hence why the CCP feels a need to invade Taiwan as even losing a war is preferable to losing power. All of the collapse can then be blamed on the war and the West.
I'm European actually and aside a full world war like WW2 I fully assume I will be able to continue to buy Chinese products (of course with a few years disruption in electronics products if there is an invasion of Taiwan). Why do you think I will not be able to afford Chinese products in the future ?

And even if I couldn't buy Chinese products, as a consumer I would still prefer a market with more competition than less (of course if I was working in this industry it would be the opposite).

Canon Releases New Firmware for the EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R6 Mark III and more

What about Canon R5c firmware update? We need better auto focus in photo mode, we need automatic vertical display in video mode so that we don't have to go to menu and adjusted manually... Canon R5c have vertical display in photo mode, they should have it on video mode as well..

Canon should give us also in photo mode option to take a video, at least in classic HD and 4K so that we can take a video while we take a photos, in order to save time going from one OS to another. Canon should know that many of us are multi function video - photo users. Many times for wedding's, we need quicker switch over video - photo mode (operation's) in a second. 4, 5 second for us is to long to loose what we need to capture. I am suggesting in photo mode HD 1920 x 1080 60f/s and 4K 60 f/s in normal video recording to be added in photo mode.

A Look into Canon’s Ergonomics

Canon’s Ergonomics Evolution are good... I am now using also Canon R5c along side with Canon R6 and I can tell that I am fine with workaround. I love Canon R5, R5c, R5 MII Ergonomics Evolution, I love design as well. When I attach on Canon R5c Canon RF 70-200 f2.8 lens, I can easily be approached by other people asking me to take a photo of my gear with they cell phone... :) Many time's happen in recent days...When it comes to functionality, business as usual with Canon... :) We are waiting new firmware update for Canon R5c. We would like to have automatic vertical display in video mode, so that we don't have to adjusted in menu all the time. We also need better auto focus in photo mode. Canon should give us also in photo mode option to take a video, at least in classic HD and 4K so that we can take a video while we take a photos, in order to save time going from one OS to another. Canon should know that many of us are multi function video - photo users. I am suggesting in photo mode HD 1920 x 1080 60f/s and 4K 60 f/s in normal video recording to be added in photo mode. We all know that Canon R5c is one of the most expensive cameras, and there for we need to take max options of functionality. R6 is even much easier to be used between the photo - video. I personally love Canon a lot, ll never go to other manufacture. I am a Canon user since Canon 350D, many of you don't even know when that Camera was launched... Since then, I changed to 450D, 650D, 6D, R6, R5c...I am about to buy Canon R6 MIII to... So, we deserve to have best out of best....

Rumors continue to swirl around the Sony A7V

speed. it's 4x faster in e-shutter doing 12 bit - canon uses a ramp comparator, so the more bits the slower the ramp.
I know it's faster, and I understand 12 bit being the standard, and the performances are pretty good but, if we had both options, at least we could choose to get a full output of the sensor using electronic shutter. This way, we simply can't.

Buy for pride or pragmatism?

I really love my EF 35mm f/1.4L II. Yesterday I almost purchased a new one as backup, believing that it is inherently better and more special than the new RF/VCM version.

Then I started rewatching and rereading reviews made in 2015 when the EF II came out. The new and old share equal image quality, except regarding two aspects. The reviews were done by "my" trusted reviewers from back then (Dustin Abbott, Chris Frost, Gordon Lang, photozone.de.) The biggest shared complaint was the $2000 USD price tag in 2015!

Where the new RF/VCM version falls a bit short: 1) Severe distortion, and 2) CA when wide open and near MFD. The distortion of the RF/VCM model, as we know, has digital corrections baked in, so for practical purposes, it is not as big a deal as some new reviewers rant about.

I asked myself, do I really want to layout $1600 USD (as an "insurance policy") on a lens first released in 2015? (How long will Canon service this lens? With care and luck, won't my current EF II last many more years?)

The decision isn't a complete "no-brainer" for me, as the main reason I dumped the version I of the EF 35mm f/1.4 was purple fringing.

I believe I'm not the only photographer who associates lens choice with judgment and skill as a photographer. For me, camera lenses involve an emotional connection. We replace all kinds of appliances, vehicles, and tools in our age of extreme planned-obsolescence, but we aren't using many such purchase to express ourselves creatively.

The idea of dumbing down a 35mm L prime grates on me. I'd be sad to replace my current EF 35mm f/1.4L II treasure with the new version. And I doubt that Canon is going to have two-tiers in their L series for this lens.

But I'm not so freaked out that I'm going to spend money that may never get used. I don't believe I will be "crippled" as a photographer if I had "to settle" for the new VCM version. On the other hand, I fret over the trend of downgrading aspects of optical quality.

Also, I try to understand Canon's perspective, and I think I should be grateful that they are doing as well as they are in the age of smartphones and digital manipulation.

From what I've read lately in the CR forums, hard-nosed pragmatism drives the majority of purchase decisions, but some photographers are concerned about where the industry is headed with engineering.
Hey, buddy. When I switched to the R, I sold all my EF lenses. For me, that was a huge mistake. In that collection was the EF 35mm f/1.4L II. Some of my most beloved photos were taken with it. There was just something special about that lens. I wish I had it back. I'd buy another if I could.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II: Firwmare v1.1.1 Release

I’m curious why there’s total silence about this fact here and on DPReview. By the way, it seems to have fixed that nasty Error 70 issue in Multiexposure mode that I used to encounter.
I didn't even realize there was a new firmware release, I was kind of relying on this thread for that but maybe I missed it or I'm following the wrong one.

But thanks to those who updated me!

Powershot V1 shows Impressive Dynamic Range Results

Your central thesis that dynamic range is proportional to pixel density is a very common misconception. Dynamic range is proportional to sensor area, not pixel size (pixel density). This is made quite clear on the photonstophotos site in the Notes under the graph he plots of dynamic range vs sensor area. https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR_Area_scatter.htm
"Notes:
Photographic Dynamic Range increases as sensor area increases.
This is because the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) increases roughly by the square root of area.
Therefore the x-axis on this chart is the square root of the sensor area.
Note that pixel size does not enter into this relationship.
"

The dynamic range of the V1 sensor is what you expect from that relationship. The V1 sensor 18.4mm x12.3mm = 226mm^2, the R7 22.3mm x 14.9mm = 332mm^2, and FF = 36mm x 24mm = 864mm^2. The photonstophotos plot of the dynamic ranges of the V1, R7 and R5 fits nicely to that pattern

Anyone Using R7 or R8 For Pro Video?

Looking to swap out my m4/3 cameras for Canons for higher IQ and better AF performance. Are these two cameras reliable enough for paid work? Looking for an R8 for tripod use and R7 for handheld use. I've read they seem to have overheating issues, especially the R8. Has anyone experienced this in longer recordings? And will a clip-on fan solve this? Most of my jobs are indoors, but I do get occasional outdoor press conferences during spring/summer, so upper 80s on asphalt is the worst case scenario.

RF 15-35 f/2.8 L IS USM

I don't recall reading any rumors about an update for the RF 15-35 f/2.8. None, nowhere. Has anybody heard of anything about it?

The reason I ask? There is a 600$ rebate on this lens, and before letting myself be tempted by it, I'd like to know if I risk regretting this substantial purchase in the near future…

I own the old EF version of this lens, and I'm not sure if I'm still happy with it.

45mm 1:1.2 just arrived

Difficult beast.

Tried a few test shots around close focus limit wide open.

Center focus only, no eye focus etc… Everything still manageable.

Eye focus enabled, pure chaos.

Once the AF misses it is a long and slow journey back to anything not blurry. Using the old 85mm 1:1.2 Mark1 is much faster and that lens was never a sprinter.

Otherwise, nice lens, feels somehow lighter that the RF 50mm 1:1.8 (which it is not)

Tiny front element compared to the backside.

I include 2 pictures for comparison

Two New PowerShot Cameras Planned for 2025

Hi - I am new to canonrumors and curious if there is any recent update on an SX70 HS replacement? I am not a professional, or frankly, not even a camera enthusiast. I have an older EOS Rebel XS (circa 2006ish) with a 70-300mm lens that I took on my last African safari (and an iPhone - lol), but it's dated and I'm seriously thinking about a superzoom bridge camera for my next safari in Feb '26. The Nikon P1100 looks sweet, but big. Hoping Canon is still planning an SX70 replacement that will be similar to the P1100, but smaller/lighter and with a bigger sensor. And come out before Feb! Open to comments...Thanks
Somehow, I doubt you will see anything like the P1000/1100 from Canon. It is a very niche product. I have a P1000 (same as P1100 except for USB connector type) and it is an interesting beast. The lens is actually quite good, considering the enormous zoom range, but the camera, itself, is a bit quirky IMO. It has a very short burst buffer (7 raw as I recall) and the lens stabilizer is dodgy past about 1000mm equivalent (not surprising). I have found if I set it to burst mode and take a handheld burst of 3 to 5 images at 3000mm, one or two will be OK. That makes the long end usable, but the catch is that the buffer takes several seconds to recover, so you basically only get one try at the shot. And, yes, it is a big camera (huge for a P&S), but not all that heavy. Here are a few samples of what it can do. The first two are at full reach (3000mm equiv.) and third is at about 1000 mm equiv. These were all shot raw (I don't shoot JPEG) and processed through Lightroom. It is only a 16 MP sensor, so you do need to frame carefully, but it can make some very nice images.

New EOS R5 firmware has been released.

Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed that the Canon R6 Mark III has the COLOR / RATE button that lets you quickly switch Color Modes, Picture Styles, and Custom Picture profiles.

Do you know if Canon plans to add this feature to other cameras, such as the EOS R5 or R5 Mark II, through a future firmware update?

Has anyone heard anything official (or unofficial) from Canon about this?
Thanks!
