RED Video Cameras with RF Mount

Interesting read with interesting (and obvious) deductions about Canon's logic for locking down the RF mount (as far as lenses are concerned).

I presume RED is the only company (other than Canon) building cameras with the RF mount...
Red has been making RF mount cameras for quite sometime now.

Canon Germany addresses recent Viltrox RF mount lens demands, and it’s a case of patent infrigement

RED Cameras licensed to use the RF mount by Canon as noted in this article, should support RF lens sales.

"Canon wants to sell lenses above all else, so much so that it will let another camera maker — one that it arguably competes with in the cinema space — use its mirrorless lens mount. Since Canon is the only manufacturer that can support RF, any sale of a RED camera means the sale of Canon lenses. That means more money. Seeing Canon block others from making lenses for RF while at the same time licensing it for use by a camera manufacturer only further drives home this strategy." : petapixel

Canon updates their product supply status

These supply chain issues drive me crazy. I have a lens hood from Canon on order for 5 months now (lucky nothing really important). It's sad that the world changed - we all got used to everything available instantly.

Andreas - freshphotography.com.au
I still have the hood for the 15-30 on order, JJC came to the rescue by beating Canon to market :)
I should cancel the order, I had forgotten about it during the vacation where I needed the hood.
Give JJC a try for hoods, I have been quite happy with the ones I have.

A rare Canon FD 24mm f/1.4 S.S.C. Aspherical hits the next Wetzlar Camera Auction with a starting bid of €6,000

Have a look at the loudness war wikipedia to see why album quality took a nosedive in the 90s.
but that would apply to both digital and vinyl. Where digital and vinyl used separate masters, there's also equal chance the digital would have the better master. You're only making an argument for what kind of mastering goal is superior, which has FA to do with the storage medium. Of course I know what you're talking about. I recall Rush made a clean break with the loudness wars after a fan showed how their albums were having less and less dynamic range with passing time.

RF 16mm 2.8 Adobe lens profile

Hi Felix
Here three images from the same raw file.
The second is the file processed to taste in Lightroom. 1/60 @ f/8, ISO 1000 on an R. Normally I'd add just a touch of vignette, but left this off for the comparison
The first is the same file with the lens profile turned off. Settings identical to the second image - notice how much extra exposure the Lightroom profile gives most of the image. Note the dark corners and the curved horizon.
The third photo is converted to a tiff in DPP, imported into Lightroom with the same settings (apart from profile) as in the second photo. I placed these together to simplify a comparison.
Note that the LR image is significantly wider than the DPP file and yet corner image quality is quite good.
I have started some comparisons of LR vs DPP with some astrophotography images (BTW I shoot at f/4 as the reduction in coma is worth the slight loss in light gathering - probably less than a stop). Those photos are typically at ISO 3200, where DPP has aggressive noise reduction, noticeably softening the images. I could play around with NR in DPP, but I can't be bothered as I am used to my workflow in LR/PS.
Another BTW, the IQ of the RF 16mm @f/4 is not far off my Samyang 14mm f/2.8.View attachment 202214View attachment 202215View attachment 202216

Lens recommendations with R6

I own a LOT of great glass (from EF 8-15, EF 11-24, RF 14-35, RF 50 1.2, RF 85 1,2, RF 70-200 2.8, RF 100-500, EF 300 2.8, EF 600 5.6, RF 600 f/11, T/S lenses and more...) All in pristine condition, (because I am very careful with it, especially when swapping lenses).

That said, swapping lenses (carefully and quickly) especially when with other (impatient) people is a PAIN IN THE ASS.
For a long time I said, "The best Canon R5 walking around lens is an iPhone Pro Max",
But, I just bought (have not yet received) a used RF 24-240 because of good 3rd party software, good in camera photo pixel wrangling, and, ease in keep my photos all in one file considerations.
You can pick up an "almost new" 24-240 in mint condition for $700 or less online.
As far as completing your trinity, I'd go with the RF 50 1.2 (for incredible image quality and bokeh) or the RF 24-105 for framing your shot. Also some Kenko extension tubes for macro.

MY LENS/BODY WISH LIST (different than most I've seen....):
1. RF 24-105 MARK II (BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY) even though this zoom range has limitations, I know)
2. RF 24-240 "L" glass quality (weather sealed, highest possible IQ and overall quality for this 10x range.
3. EOS R1 ASAP.

There are 4 wide-angle L prime lenses coming in the next 12 months [CR2]

That really depends on whether one is shooting professionally or as an enthusiast/hobbyist. The latter generally will have more time to spend on attempting to perfect an image to their tastes. Also it's possible to batch process with some noise reduction software, saving a lot of time.

I use Topaz DeNoise AI on all my images these days (I'm a retired industrial photographer, now photographing wildlife as a hobby), but I prefer to fine-tune the DeNoise settings for each image, which is of course far too time consuming for pros (with the exception of fine art photographers).
DxO DeepPrime takes about a minute per R5 CR3 on my 2020 Macbook Pro (Intel CPU). I haven't tried Topaz lately, but it has always been slower than DxO for me. That's a lot of processing time, even for hobbyists with time to spare like me.

The good news is that it only takes 6 seconds per R5 CR3 on my Mac Studio :)

Related to all this, Canon has said they have reworked the 'connection' menu on the R6II and they did release an update to the phone companion app. I hope future Canon bodies will make connecting and transferring a lot easier and faster, it is very frustrating currently. Having a few seconds between each time you have to push the "OK" button is bad, but having the timeout be only a few seconds more is worse.
The original M50 had a dedicated button on the side, you'd push that and it would connect to your wifi. It took a minute or two, but no need to press buttons.

It's hard to beat the speed of taking out the CFe and using your laptop, but big improvements can be made in this area. I'm not asking for native S3 support for uploading straight to the Amazon cloud, but something like that would be useful.

What Power bank do you use if you want to do long shoots so you do not need to swap batteries outside the studio

Thanks! This one seems pricey but it must be worth it. I have a power bank, just didn't think it can be used that way. I'll have to test it.
20221111_135559.jpg

It's big, so it's not for your fanny pack. I have had a camera, laptop and phone plugged into it and it charges them all quickly.

I will add that it has never become what we'd call "hot" to the touch when charging the brick or when the brick is charging things.

Wattage matters, so you just want to make sure you're using something that can reach the maximum charge loads for whatever devices you're going to be charging.

47 megapixel 1" sensor in Leitz 2 Leica Smartphone

Saw this today, wow. Largest CMOS sensor in a smartphone so far. Larger diameter lens? and 19mm. S

Sold only in Japan? Why is that?

R6 II IS OUT - SO WHAT'S NEXT?

I asked myself the same.
So at the beginning of the year there were rumors about a new entry-level full-frame RF mount camera. It also mentioned, it will use the image sensor of the EOS R6. There were also rumors about a new 30 megapixel camera on Weibo but just with a [CR1] rating. And another rumor about an APS-C that is supposed to be the M6 Mark II successor, so a camera without viewfinder.
Now given that the M6II is already discontinued, I expect that one to be released early next year.
I'm not sure yet what's in store for full frame next year, an EOS R replacement with 30MP and stabilization would indeed be nice. But probably also be in the price range of a used R5.

Patent: Optical formulas for a trio of wide f/1.8 prime lenses for the RF-S mount

I decided to take the plunge and buy the R7 today. Professional obligations are increasing again and while I’ve always found my RP adequate for all my client work to date?m, two bodies, multiple card slots, and light video capabilities are a must for my second body. I’m just glad the R7 exists during this time that I’m priced out of anything more premium.

Anyone else interested in RF-S 15-85 ?

7D + 15-85 was my main setup for about a decade, before I switched to full-frame with the EOS R system. I loved that combo.

Such a versatile and (despite being non-L) very high quality lens. Given that Canon is keeping APS-C alive, I really hope that they'll release a worthy successor to it.
Thanks for your support , hoping more will come to influence Canon if not yet on their development plan.
