I'm a bit out of the loop on EF lens prices & rebates with COVID, need help

Sounds like a really nice setup.

Depending on what you shoot I have one remark on the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS:
TBH I would take a closer look at the 100-400L II:
  • not so much bigger - OTOH I checked the data: 130% size, 160% weight
  • 100 mm more reach (if needed, e.g. wildlife)
  • the 70-300mm is too much overlap to the 70-200
Ony some weight and size advantage
If I think twice, your choice might be right. ;)
Yeh the thing is I don't really do birds, and the extra size and weight is kinda a big deal. (really only reason i want the 70-300 is something a little easier to carry than the 70-200 f/2.8). I owned it once before, and it was a nice savings in size/weight from the 70-200. Not game changing like the 70-300 DO, but enough that it was just a bit less cumbersome. TBH I would probably miss 70mm more than I'd miss 400mm.

If I was going to carry something the size of the 100-400L II, I would carry the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II based on what i normally shoot

Also apparently the 70-300L is out of production so I better get to ordering it!

R5 and new firmware: everything was perfect untill...

thank you for your answers, i've checked and it's ok.
but sometimes the combo works great sometimes , not at all, impossible to focus.
the last time it did, was just after a short video, 1 or 2 s, i quickly switch to photo (before any AF on subject in video mode) to shot bird, but impossible to focus in photo mode.
so i quickly switch back to video mode (to check AF), focused on a subject, and went back to photo, and then, AF was ok.
is it possible that if i switch from video to photo, when i do not focus on anything in video, the AF is kind of "lost" in photo?

Canon EOS R5, EOS R6, EOS-1D X Mark III, RF 70-200 f/2.8L IS & RF 100-500 f/4.5-5.6L IS firmware released

There are only a handful of vendors who actually make the flash memory chips that all of the card manufacturers buy from. It's very feasible that there are some SanDisk and some Sony Tough CF Express cards that contain chips from the same batch of the same chip maker, while other examples of SanDisk and Sony Tough CF Express cards do not contain chips from the batch that is involved in the issue. The numbers printed on the side of your memory card that tells you *exactly* which batch it is a part of are just as important as the brand label on it when trying to determine if a card is among a batch of "problem" cards.
I still haven’t upgraded to firmware 1.3 on my R5 (still on 1.2). But since your post I have stopped using my 512gb Sandisk CF Express Card and reverted to a Sandisk 128gb UHS-I card. So far nearly 3000 frames taken over 3 photo shoots and no lockups yet. If it makes it to 5000+ frames without a lockup with the SD card I will strongly suspect the CF Express card was causing the problem. With the CF Express I was getting a lockup roughly once every 2000 frames. So let’s see what happens... I’ll give it a few more weeks and then upgrade to 1.3 to test out the CF express card again. Fingers crossed

Canon Cashback promotion prolonged until 2021-06-30 (Sweden)

I read the terms and at least in the Norwegian translation it looks like if you buy two products with cashback, you can only claim one of them?

Translated:

2.2.4.1 Participants who purchased ONE camera body before 31 March 2021 can only claim the offer for ONE purchased EF lens.

2.2.4.2 Participants who purchased ONE camera body before 31 March 2021 can only claim the offer for up to THREE purchased RF lenses.

But, i bought 2 camera bodys in March. A R6 and a R5, The R6 with the RF 15-35 and the R5 with the RF 100-500

Perhaps it's just cashback for one camera body? But I'll get cashback for both lenses and at least one camera body I assume.

Is Canon technical Support answering their phones..?

I guess so, check out if their time zone is the same as yours. Once I called them when they haven't even started working. If your issue can be solved somewhere else than better go and fix it by yourself. I have reached them via phone but they could not help me. Instead, I searched for it support sydney, and surprisingly they helped me out. If you think that they are the only ones who can help you, then of course try to get in touch with them asap. Otherwise try to find another solution. Best of luck!

RF 70-200 f/2.8 vignetting?

Absolutely , I had to try the 15-35 myself to see what it looked like, and it is quite severe if you compare a 2.8 shot to an f8 one , but it cleared up nicely without introducing too much noise. And although you shoot a 15-35 often at Infinity you also often shoot it stopped down to where the vignetting is a much smaller issue, if any. So mounted to the R5 and R6 with their great sensors this is a less problem than it would’ve been using the 1dx..
That's exactly the results of todays shooting session. I had it @f/7.1 and focus distance far far away. No issue irl.

Images taken with Canon EF85mm f/1.8 USM wided opend on EOS 5DS/5DS R?

Please, anybody can send me several full-size images taken with Canon EF85mm f/1.8 USM wide opened on Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R? At F1.8 or F2, JPEG or RAW.

My camera body is EOS 5DS R. I am looking for a 85mm portrait lens to hand over my 100L Macro. But it must be not too expensive because I do not want to invesgate too much on DSLR. I am on my way to Canon RF mount.

I studied the cheap but ancient EF85mm f/1.8 USM and want to check the wide opened performance on the EOS 5DS/5DS R. My other handy Canon EF lenses: 24L II, 35L II, 100L Macro.

Thank you for sending me the images.

Help to understand Canon R5 LP-E6NH USB battery charging

I went out yesterday afternoon and did a photoshoot. Using 2 Canon E6NMH batteries in my grip, I was down to 70% on both after 425 shots.

Charging the batteries in the grip appears to be slower than charging them alone. Initially the charger supplies about 1,400 mAh when charging a single battery. It charges one battery and then the second. It may not be slower but appears to be. Of course not having to remove the batteries is a benefit.

I don't have the 600mm lens but my 100-500 has dual motors and I could believe that telephotos might be more of a load on the batteries because of that.

This!

Thanks. Is there a way to see if the charging is completed? As you stated, it's charging one battery at a time, but when they're full, does the green light/indicator turn off? (Well I guess I'll see in a couple of hours if nobody answers this :)

The New Canon EOS R6 firmware v1.3.0 has been pulled globally

Canon had indicated it wanted to up the cadence of its firmware releases, perhaps even going monthly. Reality is hitting, and this update was supposed to see light a bunch of weeks ago. There were probably worse, more obvious bugs that they fire-drilled on, and this was missed. Fast cadence software development usually means accepting higher risk on testing, knowing you have a follow-on update a few weeks later. The firm I work for is as guilty of this as anyone. This usually - but not always - makes companies a bit more lax in initial testing, perhaps testing each individual new feature, but not necessarily comprehensively testing obscure combinations.
I always lose this fight but I argue that the more frequent the release cycle the better.
I find that the longer the release cycle is the greater the reluctance to leave things out and the more pressure there is to rush things in.
With short release cycles, most things can wait until the next and there is rarely a need to rush anything.
Emergency releases like R6 Firmware 1.3.1 do not follow release cycles and can be pushed anytime.
Everything else can wait until it is good and ready.

R6 for stills - 10 weeks of experience

For me the camera is incredible in the speed of focus and face detection.
But I have something that I do not like about the camera and that is that I usually shoot in liveview and the screen of the R6 is significantly smaller than the mark iv (previous camera) and also very very bright, especially in the sun. For me it is difficult to compose and see the image in this way compared to the mark iv.
Am I the only one who finds this unforgivable?
Finally another important thing. When you look through the viewfinder the exposure looks different than what you can see on the screen. It is very rare, the image is always seen through the darkest viewfinder, especially also in the sun, where it looks quite bad. I await your opinions :)

EOS R6 v1.3.0 firmware bug

https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Nf4y1x7iA?from=search&seid=8672218267018754065
Someone sent me this video showing the problem (FYI it's in Chinese)...

Based on what I've heard so far:
When you try to record 4k60p or 50p in crop mode the camera will freeze or showing Err 70. You won't be able to switch off the camera unless you remove the battery.
And the screen will stay black after reinserting the battery (but you can still enter the menu)
One of the solutions I heard: switch to photo mode, enter the menu and then reset all settings.
Then don't forget to roll back your firmware to 1.2.0 ;)

Canon joins forces with the Japanese government and others for advanced chipmaking production

Make that >150M Euro for an ASML NXE3400C (high volume manufacturing for <7nm nodes) and >225M Euro for an ASML EXE5000 (high volume manufacturing for <5nm nodes, release plan for 2023). Canon has never been a big player in the semiconductor market. Nikon did good with its ArFi systems in the past (and had a lot of patent disputes with ASML), but no other player but ASML has done better at <193nm wavelength lithography for high volume manufacturing. 4 years time frame to get to a <2nm patterning process (without an enormous amount of multi-patterning) is just wishful thinking. No matter how much the Japanese government is willing to spend.
