Canon updates EOS R5 8K and autofocus information

This article does a good job explaining why 8K may not be directly useful to some but still provides great benefits relative to panning and zooming when downsampling to 4K or HD, not to mention the much larger JPEG that can be extracted at 30 fps on the R5. Those who make light of 8K should read this.

Also explained here:

3 years later, now it is in a small mirrorless camera sitting on a more flexible platform equipped with a bigger sensor (with superior low-light) recording to standard memory cards with full AF and IBIS, silent operation, better reliability and support, etc.
Ok it is not 8k60fps REDCode RAW and they have moved on as well, and there may be some other limitations, but still pretty crazy.

RF85 f1.4L IS USM?

I agree with the OP, the 1.4 is a much better all-around lens, faster AF than the 85LII that I had owned previously, and the IS at the focal length is indispensable IMHO if you are working in "interesting" (i.e. low) light levels, my main use was live music events. Yes it works on an R camera, but it is front-heavy and bulky and a native design would normally result in a shorter overall length as is the case for e.g. the 24-105L. Also agree with the comment that Canon need to think of us non-professional or otherwise budget-sensitive people, if every L lens is going to be well above $2,000 it is pricing us out of the market, lenses with excellent but not superlative characteristics priced in the $800-$1600 range would make a lot of sense. So far only the RF 24-105L fits that concept.

Is an RF 100-500mm lens on the way? [CR2]

Once again, this rumor must be true and I can prove it with a highly regarded scientific method.

I just purchased the 100-400 Mk ii + 1.4 extender.
Yes, that method works for me too. Just got the 100-400 MkI when the II appeared. Just got the EF-S10-22 when the 10-18 appeared (but I think the 10-22 is good). But I'd say the 100-400 II is my best lens currently, had it a while now. Good results with the 1.4X but little use for BIF and shadowed areas as AF too slow, so don't often use it.

Canon Laser Printer

I still have my 3880. I have large ink tanks and use cone inks. Those are expensive too. I also bought a old 7600 wide format. Its a 6 ink printer, but most people are happy with the big prints and 3rd party inks are cheap. I only paid $100 for it, I can use it on windows 10 by turning off the check process for a approved driver. Staples sold out a bunch of rolls of various 24 inch wide rolls and I bought a couple, so with my low usage, the paper will last and last. Even though I go for long periods between prints, head clogging is not a issue.

Is a 150mp Canon EOS R camera on the way? [CR1]

Thank you Jack,

I saw that one too....from what I could tell, it seems the one I linked to is an updated version of the one you linked to.

C

Not updated. Three different approaches. The newest one is much smaller and concentrates on analyzing historically significant photos. The one you first cited is mostly graphic, has less text and is not as comprehensive as the original. It's more of a companion to the original with more examples of various parts of it. The original is a systematic approach to composition in photography.

Even with NAB cancelled Canon still plans to announce a new Cinema Camera shortly

That is fair enough for current Cinema camera users but when Canon said "we're not developing any further EF mount lenses" it gives me pause for buying any current Canon Cinema camera, especially as I plan on buying RF lenses going forward.

I'm buying an R camera and RF glass then in 12 months I'm super busy shooting video and decide I want a C300 MKIII to go with my R5. I'd have to re-purchase all my EF glass again!

I've always thought Canon Cinema cameras were the logical next step up for hybrid video shooters........ Not any longer it would seem without an RF Cinema mount camera.

There’s no need to get rid of your current EF glass. Just use Canon’s EF-to-RF (~$100). They also have one that lets you put a variable ND filter behind the lens, which is HUGE with a still camera that has no internal ND system.

Like I said before, you have much more flexibility with EF glass. It’s kind of like type O blood.

Anyone using the new X100V, especially as a travel body?

I think I'm done buying cameras for a bit.....BUT, I have been eyeballing videos about the Fuji X-Pro 3.

Now to me, THAT looks like a fun little travel camera...small, capable and I'd think with maybe 2 lenses would be fun to take on the run when wanting to travel light.

But right now...shooting with what I have, and saving my nickels and dimes for the R5 and maybe a new piece of glass for it.....

Here are more images of the Canon EOS R5

Hello,

Here is an interview (in french) of some CANON's head directors. It is illustrated with pictures of R/R5 with new 24-105 and 100-500.

https://phototrend.fr/2020/03/interview-canon-japon-fev-2020/

I like this part:

Shoji Kaihara: as you may know, 18 months ago, we launched the EOS R, then the EOS RP, and with this new system on the market, we received a lot of feedback from customers: what they thought, what was good, what worked, what didn't work, what they wanted to see.

So we thought it was very important to us to collect what customers felt using EOS R and RP, in order to create a model we could be proud of, what we could call a second generation. The purpose was to make sure that we had covered the basics, so to speak. And we had the 2020 Olympics in mind, so we thought it was a great opportunity to showcase this model of which we are proud in 2020.

I want to tell you that we are in the final stages of developing the EOS R5 and are in the process of refining it. You’ll know we’re proud of it when it’s released and I think you’ll enjoy it.

Go Tokura: for Canon, we are positioning this EOS R5 as the companion of the new EOS 1D-X Mark III, so we know we have to get it out in time for the Olympics and it will be done.

Interference between BR-E1 remote and Godox trigger?

Some of the Bluetooth protocols only allow one device to be connected. Its a issue that is starting to be noticed, so Bluetooth 5 allows for two audio devices, but thats just the headset protocol. You can often pair multiple devices, but only one can be active. If the BR-1 can be powered down, do that and see if things work then.
