Using old manual focus FD/FL lenses on the R

A Canon tube came with my camera. I don't think the accuracy of the 3rd party adapters is a issue, pretty simple to make them. I've tried it with numerous lenses. The focus accuracy is pretty poor relying on the peaking, I can do much better using 5X magnification without the peaking. I also used a old mirror lens and focus accuracy using peaking was worse.
I haven't shot it wide open so I haven't checked the focus accuracy. I'll try it at 5x or 10x magnification.

IBIS coming to EOS M in 2020 [CR1]

nope. you brought the reference to indoor sports. I was thinking more of budget-limited birders/wildlife/zoo shooters, who often have/had a 7D series camera.

totally agree here. External hot-shoe hugging EVF would likely break off within first week of my regular use - unfortunately i do run into protruding edges and things, hurting myself and or my gear. ;-)

Not a camera you'd lend to Jacques Clouseau.

5D4 Card-Folder Selection question.

Hi John.
This would seem to be a “feature” of all the 2 card cameras, it is something I fall foul of, I remove the CF card close the card door and then find I am reviewing / deleting card 2 med jpegs (EyeFi to phone shots) and not the raws from card 1 after I have emptied it and put it back. Now whenever I want to pull the card I pull the battery first! Might as well chuck it on charge!

Cheers, Graham.

Ahh. Those are quite useful; thanks. While I invariably shoot with both cards, I close the door (so it does not get broken) when I have removed card 2 to download into laptop (it's easier; my Mac has an SD slot); and that is probably when it gets switched back to writing memos to card 1.

A new Cine-Servo zoom lens is coming soon, the CN 10×25 [CR3]

I was pleasantly surprised by the price(and impressed with the specs). I admit, I would have been skeptical if the original rumor had said “sub-$30K”.
Definitely at the low end of any realistic guesses, heck I was $5,000 too high! So yes, for those in the market a very pleasant surprise, wonder if they will do a C500 II kit? ;)

Counting down my five favorite Canon digital cameras ever. Coming in at #2…..

You are definitely not Tony Northrop ;) I am with you, it was really hard for me to decide this year whether I should use Canon's trade-in discount to get me a 5D VI. I did it, but it was really hard for me to hand out my beloved, battered sort of war-horse 5D III. With more than 150.00 actuations it still worked nicely.

Where can I buy this 5D Mark VI you keep mentioning? I'm still stuck two generations back with the 5D Mark IV, which is the best camera I've ever owned.

EOS R time lapse questions

Is there any setting within the time lapse function of the EOS R that would allow me to capture an outdoor scene that goes from day to night? I set the time lapse to re-evaluate the exposure for each frame, but there still seems to be a limit to how much the camera can (or will) adjust exposure during a time lapse. Initially I just set the time lapse video mode to smart auto, thinking it could adjust shutter speed, aperture, and ISO as much as it needed to maintain a good exposure. However, the shutter in auto mode seems to max out at what the camera feels would be a safe shutter speed for hand-held shooting. Is there a way to adjust this? Obviously pretty much any time lapse will be taken with a camera being held totally stationary, so it's frustrating that the camera cannot seem to allow me to set it to use shutter speeds slower than a hand held shutter speed. I even tried setting it to shutter speed priority mode and forcing it to use a 1 second shutter at all times. I figured I could put an ND filter in front of the camera during the day, and then remove it at night. However for some reason I don't think the camera varies the aperture in time lapse mode when the camera is set to shutter priority setting.
Go to the ISO speed settings in your menu. By default, the Min shutter speed is set to Auto which is equal to the reciprocal of the focal length, i.e. 1/50th for 50mm. Set it to manual and then you can set a minimum shutter speed as long a one second.
You may also wish to set an upper limit for ISO so the image doesn't get terribly grainy.
Then set it to P. Now the camera will set exposures from midday sun through to 1 second at (say) ISO 12800 at the max aperture of your lens, which is plenty dark.

The Zhongyi Optical Canon EF 50mmf / 0.95 lens will be officially launched for sale on April 27, 2020

I found it very challenging, I’ve owned it on a couple mounts (Sony and RF). I suspect that with the 5d4 and optical vf, you’ll need to be someone who loves manual focus lenses. Each time I sold it. It was a lot easier on the R, with the great focus aids, but in the end I traded it in and got the rf50 1.2 instead. Much happier.

Pretty awful optics when focusing close, pretty decent at distance.when you DID nail the focus, it was great. I just ended up missing and thus missing out on some great shots.

Question: what size is optimal for posting own images here / size limits?

ok, thanks all for the information so far.

Interesting that there is no easy to find, clear guideline. I'd ike to export from Lightroom in the "right size", avoiding resizeing as well as any issues with forum software etc. Was thinking of 1600 pixel on the long side, which is what I do on other forums usually.
That should work. Since the larger photos get resized as they are uploaded, they all end up working well in the forum. I have not had one rejected for being too large, but it is possible if you have a very large image and file size such that reducing it to 2048 X 2048 results in a file larger than about 5 MP.

I tried making a photo very large by saving it as 9096 X 9096 and came out with a 55 mp image that would not upload. I could probably experiment to find out the limits. I believe that it is not a simple computation. The server itself has file size limits, then the forum software, the ppi, size, and file size all play into the limit.

Then, there are style sheets that control what is displayed and how. I don't expect that many people understand how it all works together, the site coding was probably contracted out.

This may become a issue with high MP camera bodies that have very high density photosites like 100 mp, but as long as the file size is within the limits after the image is resized, it should work. If it becomes a issue, Craig will see if it can be fixed.

anywhere from 30cm to 1m ... any more questions?

No more questions, and thanks for the answers. Whether we can discern clear and significant differences in resolution depends on the display medium for the image, its size, and our viewing distance (among other things) so I was curious.

Patent: Canon RF 8mm f/4 Fisheye

Google Photos does that natively after clicking on panorama. Plus lots of panorama viewer or tour maker software. Starting from that's included into PTGUI.
OK - I went back and viewed some of your panos that way - it's awesome! It's humbling to me to think that a spherical pano that good could be taken with 4 pictures & no tripod on a camera that small & light, and with unobstructed zenith & nadir view, too! I've loved taking conventional panos for really hires pictures to hang on a wall, but now you've got me wondering about getting into spherical panos for the real-time user interaction they offer. I guess I'll be wondering what's the best lens for that on an upcoming R5!
