Industry News: Fujifilm announces the X-T200, an affordable little powerhouse

Its quite funny how Fuji themselves dont implement that articulating screen on all models.
There is rumored to be an X-T4 release in February so I guess we’ll see. I’m happy with the dual tilt screen Fuji uses but I guess video bloggers want to see themselves while filming.

EOS R HDMI output possible at FHD and 23.98p?

Yep, the only way to get it to output at 24p is to turn on a special 24p mode, which states very specifically that it is 24p, not 23.98.

Well, after some looking around, it looks like yes, they only allow you 59.94, or 24p over HDMI. Why does Canon have to be so arbitrarily weird like this??

I guess it's not a huge deal, other than some broadcasts seem to require the specific frame rate of 23.98, not 24, but I will probably never need to worry about that.

Fundraiser: Australian Fire Relief Charity Shirt

Jared Powlinnnn Froknoowsphotooooooooooowdotcom and THIS is he new Australian Fire Relief Charity Fundraiser Shirt.

Dudes and Girls, we have to be honest with ourselves. Earth is changing it‘s climate and we are part of the problem. But we must be part of the solution aka stopping the problem, too.

If the solution would be to consume more and to waste more plastic and ressources, I guess everbody would be in... but it‘s the opposite. We have to make a change to our lifestyle, each and everyone on his/her own. And that is not easy and it means making compromises and has real effects in our everyday life. Less car, more bike. Less meat, more vegetables. Less „buy new“, more repairing old stuff and using old stuff for a longer period of time... Less power consumption - turn off what you don‘t use right now etc...
Basic stuff but especially when it comes to food people tend to take it personally.

We here in Germany have the hottest January since recording began, 4 degrees Celsius above the longterm mean... just another spike you might say, I am starting to get uneasy when I think about that.

I am a physicist, no mad man. Just take a look around (we can „look around“ worldwide nowadays). Put that bit of media insanity aside and judge for yourself... and ask your local politicians to do the same and to start acting for a more sustainable society tomorrow.

Personally I'd take it to the 1:1 ratio which has a very long and rich artistic history. Yes 'rules' are meant to be broken, but it needs to be done with purpose when it makes the image stronger. If you crop 1:1 you still have the window (?) frame so you maintain the motivating source and you have a very strong triangle of face flowers and bright window frame. The only other thing I'd do is lower the level of the bright strip through the middle top as it unbalances the composition and detracts from the subject.
Thanks!!!

Firmware update coming to address Canon RF 70-200 focus issues at MFD

It's painful. They always go down, but part of the problem now is Canon is selling less volume than in the past, yet still must sustain production and service.

I hope the high prices don't further strangle the interchangeable lens industry. Maybe Sigma and Tamron will find opportunity, but then that hurts Canon's volume again, so...

You do have a good point about automation, but fewer sales means a larger markup per unit is necessary.

Then there is the harsh reality of inflation:

The cost has played a large factor in my adopting the R system, I haven't!

If purchasing a mediocre body and three f2.8 zooms is going to cost me over $10,000 I want to see the differences in output and I just don't. That kind of investment puts the R system out of reach of most working pros, that is, those that buy their gear with the money it earns them.

Pre-mature Ad for "New Canon EOS R Full-Frame"

It doesn't say Mark II so it's possible this is a very OLD ad for the (current) R.

True enough. I'm assuming one of the Marketing/Web folks at B&H was dinking around with their ads, probably pulled this one up to make some modifications and accidentally turned it on. Clearly, it wasn't ready for prime-time. Just the fact that they're fooling with these ads currently is interesting to me. I guess here's hoping that it's for the reason that there will be ads needed soon :)

AF fail on RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS...Because of firmware update?

Thanks! I looked and looked at the USA site but could not find the updates for the other lenses on the support page, but as soon as I Googled after reading your post, I found the correct page.

My 24-105mm has 2.0.0 and seems to work fine. There is a 2.0.1. Hmmm.... :D

I had to look up each lens seperately, the Canon site(s) have no way to show all updates. I knew the 24-70 and 24-105 had updates, since I always update lens firmware when I rent them :)

Aging eyes with the 5D Mark iii and Canon EOS R/RP questions

If you took this shot with a DSLR, then if the focal plane was out, you would see it by either back or front focus of the numbers on the buoys. Have you seen this? According to the depth of field calculator, the dof of a 400mm at f/5.6 on a FF is 110-144m at 125m and 200-340m at 250m. The DSLR AF must be considerably out of kilter not to be in these dof zones.

Tweaking Canon 80D audio

The preamplifiers on all Canon DSLR and mirrorless cameras are garbage (and the microphones too).
In your situation, you need to adjust the output from the Tascam to have a strong signal, so that you can turn down the volume in the 80D's settings all the way to minimum. This way, you are using the Tascam's microphone and the Tascam's preamplifier to amplify the signal as much as possible (so that you are using the 80D's preamplifier as little as possible.
However, even if you do that... the audio will still be better when recorded on the Tascam.

I have tried something similar with the Zoom H5 connected to the Canon EOS R.
The most noticeable missing component in the signal recorded to the Canon camera (even when sending the strong signal from the external recorder) is bass.
There will be more bass on the external recorder.

For some people the results with the external recorder connected to the camera will be 'good enough'... however, ideally you will record on the external recorder and then synchronize in post.

However, you are in luck with one aspect... concerts are usually loud... the poor preamps are most apparent when you record quiet things... then you get a whole lot of hiss/hum... etc.

Canada 2018

The shots are really fantastic. I love the city and the cathedral look! I'm curious what kinds of edits you applied, if you would be ready share some of these.

Hi,

Thanks for your comment

For these 2 kinds of photos, I usually do (keep in mind there is not steps order because this really depend on the photo) :

Lightroom

General correction :

Color profil : faithful or neutral according to the photo

Lens CA and distortion correction and recrop if necessary. For distortion correction i always start with automatic correction Auto or Full if i don’t like the result i use guided + manuel settings ajustement.

Temperature and tint ajustement if necessary

Contrast : Always start at 30

Exposition ajustement if necessary, I never exceed + 2

High light correction : I try to not exceed -75 and if necessary i use local brush correction

Shadow correction : I try to not exceed + 50 and if necessary i use local brush correction

White correction if necesseray

Black correction if necesseray

Sharpness :

Sharpness amount : I never exceed +80

Sharpness radius : always 0.8

Sharpness Detail : 50

Shaprness Masking : always 20 minimum and more depend on the photo

Noise reduction :

Luminance : always 20 minimum and more, it depend of ISO i used. For cathedral shot, i set 30 because i shot at 6400 ISO.

Detail/contrast/color/detail/smoothness : 50

Export to Nik collection Color Efex Pro 4

Glamour Glow
: Use it when i want add some mood

Glow : Really depend on the photo

Saturation : often 10

Glow warmth : Depends on the mood I want to give to the photo

Pro Contrast

Correct color cast : really depend on the photo

Correct contrast : never exceed 10

Dynamic contract : never exceed 30

Graduated neutral density

Uppper tonality : really depend on the photo

Lower tonality : really depend on the photo

Detail extractor

Detail extractor : 3

Contrast : 0

Saturation 0

Effect radius : low

Back in Lightroom

Add some contrast if necessary : often between 10 and 20

TSL luminance : really depend on the photo

TSL saturation : really depend on the photo

Export to Photoshop

In photoshop a use luminosity masks scripts

A script for precisely adjust color balance for low, mid, high luminance

A script for precisely adjust color vibrance for low, mid, high luminance

A script that add some subtle glow effect if necessary, i often set opacity at 80% max

A script for precisely adjust contrast for low, mid, high luminance

High-pass sharpen if necessary

Comparing the EOS-1D X, EOS-1D X Mark II & EOS-1D X Mark III

Or its more likely that they would be using a cheaper NAND based memory buffer running on a faster NVMe memory controller, but still means a persistant state storage buffer. Canon couldn't claim a fixed "buffer" specification if they were relying on a users storage card and using a slower while more expensive removable storage spec like CFExpress for a dedicated internal buffer doesnt make sense to me (edit: perhaps there are some power consumption benefits with CFExpress). Either way it would mean the buffer would persist even after a power loss, interesting.
DPR did early testing using XQD cards and I didn't see any whimpering about the buffer. I think the buffer is real. What kind of memory is in the buffer is up for grabs. It could be LP RAM. It could be very high quality (I.e. log life) NAND. It even could be 3D Crosspoint memory from Micron. So far, Only Intel has released open market products with 3D xpt memory, but Micron is the manufacturer and they have the right to sell the stuff, so it is not out of the question. However, I do think that if the buffer was persistent, Canon would have made a big deal out of it, so most likely it is RAM for speed and ease of access (for as much concurrency in read and write as possible). In today's world that is only a few RAM chips.

Patent: Canon RF 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and more

There is no non-L version of the RF 24-105 (yet).

I have an EOS R with the 24-105L. The IQ issues prevent the 24-240 from being interesting for me. Both my EF 200mm f/2.8L II and my EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II provided good IQ, but I felt that the 100-400 had some focusing issues when using a 1.4 III extender. In any case, I have sold them both and I will be purchasing the RF 70-200 2.8 soon. If this RF 70-400 becomes available it is very likely to be added to my wish list.

Come to think of it, the non L lens I was thinking bout was an EF lens. I've seen it offered as part of a kit with the R and RP, so now I see what looks like a killer price, I have to check carefully that it's the RF 24-105L I am looking at.

Groundswell?

for years now you have been starting posts along the lines of 'is the mkiii lens the swansong of the EF system' and now you are quoting a deliberately provocative click-bait headline (that is actually very little to do with the content) and when people quote what Canon actually said you reply 'they only said that to pacify their EF users'.
It is not so much what you say as the tone you communicate with - you repeatedly give the impression that you want DSRL/EF to die then when challenged talk about how you are a content Canon user and see a gradual 'glide path'.
Anyone would think you are deliberately creating click-bait headline threads.

I'm sure Canon is having frequent discussions about the future of the consumer photography part of their business...surveys, sales analysis, focus groups...No, I don't want dSLR/EF to die, but I also like to discuss what might happen. Most of us regulars on Canon Rumors have, I imagine, spent quite a bit of time and money on photography, giving much of the money to Canon. As explained earlier, I'm well into the transition to mirrorless. A lot of thought, questioning, some second guessing, and resources are involved in the transition. Canon Rumors is a great place for me to learn and express while making these decisions.

My style is my style: Nobody ever has accused me of not being blunt enough.

Don't worry, this too shall pass! Enjoy the gear you have!

New gear for the holidays

Hi Jay.
I’m sure you will find the Better Beamer useful, but I bet you will find it fiddly too unless you just leave it assembled on your flash though I think it is too fragile for that!
I really enjoyed the extra reach they give but I got so fed up with my Better Beamer that I tried the MagMod Magbeam, this too has its down side, the large silicon rubber mount that lives on the flash makes it harder to store , that and the cost! However the set up time when you want the flash extender is seconds rather than minutes, pop it on the magnets and pull plus you get two different stages of magnification!

Cheers, Graham.

.... late addition. My Better Beamer finally arrived from the US. Had given up hope

RF 135mm

I do wonder what the average R user looks like, and what Canon would like it to look like in the future. We saw a lot of lenses that are crazy fast in patents. It makes sense to push for lenses that were impossible to make at a reasonable size and cost in the EF Mount.

I would hope eventually they make both. Maybe a 135mm f/1.8 at under $2000 and a 135mm f/1.4 at $3000-3500. That second lens would be amazing for portraits and for sports and theater applications.
