Holiday Printer deals

Canon gives the printers away hoping to sell the consumables -- ink mostly. However, most consumers have figured out that if they open the box, take out the ink and another part (can't remember what it is called) those can be sold on eBay for $100-$150. So, Canon, a company that loves to tout its environmental record, ends up producing printers that go straight into landfills, burning resources all along the way.
Except it is the consumers dumping the extra stuff in the landfills. What is Canon supposed to do? I still fail to see this as a scam. I got a real nice printer from them this way. Honestly, the way you look at this is a little strange. The number of printers that wind up in landfills are just a speck in the bucket compared to everything else.

EOS R exposure compensation and metering

I can see that now :)

I think I use my camera in a not so normal way, so what you wrote did not make sense to me, initially.

I got a little long winded (and perhaps a bit hypocritical) before realizing that there's more ways to use the metering and histogram than the way I use them :p

No worries. I'm usually wrong about technical things, so I'm going to go run a victory lap around my living room with my laptop held high over my head if that's ok :ROFLMAO:

Rp vs 7d2 high iso performance?

First image on the 7D2 with a 24-70 lens at 24mm, second on the 6D2 with the same lens at 38mm
both shot at 1/15 second, ISO25,600, F4.0
processed in lightroom from the RAW files, all corrections turned off, cropped to half the width of the image, and resampled down to 1920 pixels wide

Definitely a big improvement with the 6d2 sensor. Thanks for the help mate. You have given me lots to think about.

Mirrorless alternative to 5D mark IV

I currently shoot with a 5D mark iv and plan to switch to mirrorless when the Canon releases the new rumored bodies. Perhaps it's too soon to ask because specs haven't been released yet, but I'm wondering which of the two rumored (the EOS RS or EOS RL) would make more sense coming from the 5D IV. I shoot mostly portrait and landscape...but do occasional sports as well and like the versatility of the 5D iv. I've heard the "L" in RL is short for landscape although not sure what would make the body would be targeted to landscape (perhaps fewer frames per second?). I also read the EOS-RS may be a successor to the 5DS(R)...but what about someone like me coming from 5d iv. I realize there will likely be a 5D mark v but I probably won't go that route. It will also be interesting to see what video capabilities will be offered on the new mirrorless bodies.

Thanks

What do you think mirrorless will offer you for the type of photography you do that a 5D Mark V would not? There are some things that mirrorless can do better than a DSLR, but there are also things that a DSLR can do better than a mirrorless.

Are we still going to get teleconverters for the RF mount?

I would think tele converter is just bad name and cause lot of confusions, converter word is used with many kind of things.
If you use EF tele with R body ,you kind of use tele converter :p
I hope canon uses Shrink extender instead of speed booster.

Wouldn't a "shrink extender" be more properly called a "retractor?"

Industry News: Leica announces the Leica SL2

My understanding is that the micro-lenses were modified to allow better IQ with the acute light angles of some M lenses. I haven't seen anything to indicate that the SL2 is manufactured by Panasonic but that may be true. Some of the technology, such as the contact-less/magnetic controls in the SL2 seems proprietary to Leica. Personally I wouldn't have any problem with Panasonic manufacture but I'm not a camera purist. Leica folks are fickle and might not go for that. I would be surprised if that were the case but I'm sure it will come out pretty quickly if that's true. Given the small number of units they are actually going to sell it seems like they could at least do final assembly in Germany. They did have their big launch party there and I'm pretty sure the SL is German made.

Personally, If Canon can't put together a full-frame mirrorless solution that works for me and I go L-Mount I'd probably just buy one of the Panasonic S1 variants or and S2 if it takes me a while to make up my mind.

EOS RP bricked

The R is with A.J. Johnson for warranty-covered repair. Their diagnosis is the PCB, so should be a straightforward swap out. My guess is a power surge. Definitely would not recommend using the USB charger cable to charge a battery in-body. I reckon it’s fine if charging to the battery grip when detached, but to me that defeats the point a bit... I suspect a fluke/isolated incident and am just looking forward to getting it back!

Going to get EOS R - Have a Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT

Wow, what a response. Thank you all.
Next step I'm going to get some sort of "macro flash" as well attached to my 100mm. But first things first :)

The MT24-EX does strange things on my RP, it likes to over expose by more than 2 stops in E-TTL mode most of the time. It doesn't do that on the SL1 in liveview, M1, M50 and M6II. The picture I took on the R+MT24 were on the border of maxing out the flash, so I can't say if suffers from the same issue. All with the MP-E65mm.
That's the only flash issue I came across on the R and RP so far.

Canon U.S.A. Introduces Its First Two 8K Broadcast Lenses

8K res on a tiny 1.25 inch sensor is helluva sharp & ultra high resolving power.
The article did say "tri-sensor" cameras, so we are talking 3 monochrome sensors behind a dichroic prism (with electronic registration to eliminate CA) so the resolution is not that hard to believe. Shallow depth of field is NOT desirable for broadcast use, so keeping the sensors as small as possible is desirable to maximize DOF and also to minimize system weight. All mirrorless fans note that these lenses have a long back throw to accommodate the prism.

Premiere Pro And Final Cut Pro X finally Support the Canon XF705

Saw this in the Canon Press Releases. I've been following this camera since it was announced. It would be perfect for the type of ENG work that I do. I've read reviews by early adopters who were frustrated by the lack of support for the new file format. It looks like it took Adobe almost 1 year to add support for the XF705 to Premiere Pro.

Patent: New big white lens designs for the EF mount

I was thinking about long lenses the other day. I was wondering if a teleconverter with an R-mount on the camera side and EF on the lens side would allow for optical improvements. It would be longer then an R-R or EF-EF converter. Rather than cramming the lens elements into a short tube, there'd be more room to play with. Could be helpful for designing 2x TCs.
