Canon EOS RP Specifications [CR1]

I like this form factor, can Canon make a APS-C mirrorless camera to replace 90D or 7D at around $900-1300?
You'll never get a 7D equivalent mirrorless for that price, because of the need for pro-level body and weather sealing. Hard actually to see it in the APS-C based EOS M series at all because of the size (including dual DIGICs and card slots). Given the cropping potential of mirrorless FFs, there would be an argument to just use the future pro (or high MP) version in crop mode if you really wanted the equivalent of the 7Dii. Which all brings us back to the timing of such a future pro version. If it actually is 2020, then a 7Diii might still be a possibility, although it is not really due yet on traditional timeframes.

Anyone will buy a DSLR now?

Sorry if this has been brought up before. I have not been regular here of late. With all the new RF lenses coming out, is there anyone here who will continue to buy DSLR? I know I will not. Thank you.

Yes I will, as long as possible. I don't get the advantage of these uncomfortable litte cameras with their electronic viewfinders. It's like new cars with automatic transmission: wouldn't take it for free. My EOS 5DII already felt like an expensive compromise since it had features I really wanted (full frame sensor mostly) but also stuff that I still wish it didn't have - like autofocus and such. I know, crazy.
I'm really the Leica type but couldn't afford it at the time. Or to use the automotive comparison again: now that BMW is getting rid of the manual transmission in their regular cars (M3 remains to be seen...) I may end up getting a classic 911. Maybe it's time to sell my Canon gear and buy a Leica with two lenses and call it a day.

2018 was the worst year for the digital camera market since peaking in 2009 - CIPA

ABNQEgR.png

The table above shows the CIPA sales data from 2015-2018, CIPA's projected camera sales for 2019 & Canon's projected camera sales for 2020.

Based on the CIPA 2019 & Canon 2020 sales figure I am fairly confident that companies like Canon & Nikon may not release any more new DSLR (Reflex) models anymore before July 2020 and instead put in all their R&D money into more mirrorless camera bodies and lenses that are equal or exceed the features, capability and accuracy of DSLRs sold today.

Canon CEO also noted mirrorless camera sales aren't significantly adding to its bottom line, but are instead significantly eating into the sales of DSLRs. If any R&D capital is going to cannibalize your money makers during your current product's mid-cycle then you may as well just release new generation of mirrorless camera models at the end of the product cycle of your DSLRs.

Personally, I would prefer 1 more generation of DSLRs within the next 17.5 months but market forces may force the 1D X Mark II, 5D Mark IV, 5Ds / 5Ds R, 6D Mark II and 7D Mark II to be the last full frame and high end APS-C DSLR models to be developed.

EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III and EF 600mm f/4L IS III developers talk about the new super telephoto lenses

There was a topic here where we discussed the MTF curves betweeen the series two and three 400 and 600. Without resurrecting that topic what was the final feeling of the issue of potential optical quality between the series? It looked to me that absent a different methodology the newer series MTF is not quite where the series two MTF and presumably optical quality are.

The weight and balance are a totally different hand of cards winning hand.

Also the mkI was ridiculously sharp. It's the only lens I've used with a 2x TC and found the sharpness wide open excellent. Although the AF was less accurate with a 2x. The problem with the mk1 is the weight of the thing. I need to heaviest Video tripod to handle the lens adequately. It's no joke finding a tripod and fluid head that can handle a 12Kg + load effortlessly. But the images I get from it are exceptional. I'd like to try a mkIII purely for the weight reduction, but if the IQ is anything less than the mkI....what's the point?

Where can I find good FD mount L series lenses?

I have a ton of M42, Nikon, OM, as well as lots of adapters. I also have one FD - EF glassless adapter, but I don't recall ever using it.

I have tested some of the old lenses on my R, I just use the appropriate EF adapter and attach them to the EF-RF adapter that came with my R. That works fine. I have sold a number of my old Nikon glass, but still have 6 or so old lenses and one 50mm f/1.8D that I keep in case I get a Nikon digital body to test out. I have a AF film body for it.

I need to get rid of that old stuff, I have boxes and boxes, each one dedicated to one brand.
It is amazing what we can accumulate over the years. For me to consider my Takumar collection complete I still need a 20, 24, and 85mm. I have the hoods and cases. The problem is always the price for good condition with no haze or fungus. Love that old M42 stuff and don't really care what brand they are at all. Sometimes it's just fun to mount one and use it. Nostalgia for old things is what grabs me. I never owned any of that back then, I just like the idea of preserving it. It will be a lot of fun (hopefully) to share with my grandson one day. Hoping the focus peaking works well on one of the R cameras. Works great on my Olympus, but the crop is murder. :)

Canon's PRO-2000 and 4000 printers are really cheap right now

8nfortunately I don’t recall the link as I had no need to keep it.

For sure the cost and space are the main issues with all these big printers. I started large format printing with the Epson 4900, their P-1000 at the time, but it was a love hate relationship as I had many banding issues, I then got the Epson 7900, their P-2000 at the time, and that lasted less than 300 prints before a terminal head failure! At least I got 1,500 or so out of the 4900 before it went to the scrap head...

It really put me off large format printing but then the new P series Canon printers were announced and I not only read and reread Kieth’s review, I contacted him directly for some pointers. After that I was sold and ended up getting the P-2000, mainly for space.

The main reason I say get the 4000 if you can is that it is all well and good printing full bleed to 24”, but that gives you nothing to mount, I like a good 3 inch border all around a print that big to give me mounting room and something to mat on. Practically with my 20mp camera I rarely print larger than 20” x 30” so it all works out most of the time.

Patent: Canon in body image stabilization (IBIS)

The patent diagram look obvious and generic. I’m surprised that this is not essentially how other companies do IBIS and is already patented somewhere.
yes, such is what you get in patents...
Unfortunately you often need to read them to see what's being discussed. problem is that they are never (by their nature) written for ease of reading...

Is this the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III?

I can not understand the policy Kenon, professional cameras are updated 1 time in 2-3 years, this is normal.
But when it comes to the banal compact camera PowerShot G7 X Mark 3, which needs to be updated EVERY year, such as Nikon updating the D3xxx, D5xxx DSLR line, Canon’s policy is not clear - in general.
Can anyone suggest alternatives, mandatory requirements: a matrix from 1-inch and above, 5-axis stub, the presence of zoom (not fixed), a folding screen for selfie, 4Kp30 - 4Kp60, high-aperture lens (preferably), compactness (preferably), fresh model 2018-2019.

Is the RF 28-70 f2 trying to be too many things at once?

I suppose that the 28-70 f2L is a kind of marketing stunt lens. One to show the competition what Canon can do if they have the will and the budget. Reading recent artilces from Canon, they suspect that the 35mm market (DSLR and RF) will contract 50% over the next few years. So these new lenses (while Canon still has an R&D budget to play with) will be it for a while. Once all the RF lenses are available, there won't be a lot of development left in the Canon budget going forwards. So they are designing like mad...while they still can.
I haven't yet had a chance to try one of these lenses, and I'd very much like to try one. But...regardless of how good it is...I'm not happy about the £3K UKP price or the need for a £2400 UKP camera body that isn't that great ergonomically. A 5D4 is a far far better camera for a similar price point.

Panasonic Launches New LUMIX S Series Full-frame Mirrorless Cameras LUMIX S1R and LUMIX S1

Panasonic is known for video as is Sony, I hope buyers research the limitations of contrast detect for autofocusing during video, its not pretty.

Every single broadcast ENG camera from Panasonic or Sony that I was using in the 90's/2000's was fitted with either a Canon or Fuji/Fujinon lens. They were great at the recorder and sensor portion of the camera, but their lenses were lackluster (if even really available for purchase). There's still a lack of interoperability with 3rd party (non-native mount) lenses from both Sony and Panasonic to an extent. Lenses from a wide range of manufacturers will "work" but many of the selling features will not work appropriately when using with an adapter. It's better than it was, but it's still not quite right.

I love DPAF from Canon and if they continue to improve, combined with their color science they'll be headed in the right direction. Still unsure where this RF mount and R series mirrorless is really heading and at what prices with what features (or lack of features). Those that haven't jumped ship at least have a reason to stick around a little longer to see what's available.

Disable Touch AF

I have a R and a 5D MK IV. The MK IV does not change exposure when moving the AF point when in DSLR mode, my R does. So do recent M series cameras as has been noted.

But ... When I put my MK IV in live view where it uses the dual pixel sensor to compute exposure, then exposure does change as the AF point is moved, same as the R. I did not notice that with my 5D MK III.

The exposure semi linked to AF point is definitely one of the things I like with the R. I've tested this before, but, since the camera is right here with me, I tried it again. Using touch AF, I keep the camera in the same place, and watch it change exposures as I touch areas of the screen with different amounts of lighting. It does not matter which exposure mode is used, exposure changes when the AF point is moved to a area lighter or darker while the camera is not moved.
Interesting! I wonder why Canon has decided to link exposure to the chosen AF point in all auto-exposure modes on the 5DIV and the EOS R? I have to say it seems an odd decision, although maybe that is just because I've become used to how it not being that way. If I get a chance to play with an EOS R of 5DIV at any stage, I'll have to experiment with it.

Here’s an updated list of unreleased Canon gear

From another thread regarding Sony: https://gizmodo.com/sony-please-dont-give-up-on-gadgets-1826205738

I've heard it before - is there any risk associated with jumping to Sony. I'd be concerned enough not to jump ship and invest heavily. I don't see it as a big risk but to me Canon is the most secure place to be and so I accept some shortcomings.
