Zeiss to Announce Milvus 35mm f/1.4 Very Shortly

I understand most Milvus lenses are just updated versions of the ZE/ZF lenses. ...

Some are original optical design AFAIK (2.8/15, 2.8/21 or 2/35), but some are quite new designs, e.g. new 1.4/50, which was originally Planar design and now is Distagon (also much longer and heavier), probably Otus-ish formula. Same goes with 1.4/85 or 2.8/18 (which is even faster that original 3.5/18 lens)

Yes I saw they had updated the 50/1.4 design. The old one (Contax/Rollei/ZF/ZE) had a very unusual bokeh some loved, some hated but was showing its age in areas, especially the chromatic aberrations wide open so I wasn't shocked they went to a new design.

With the 21mm I believe they updated the coating etc but, optically, that was it. The 21mm/2.8 was of course the same optical formula from Contax days to ZE/ZF (like the 28/2 and 50/1.4). It's a wonderful design especially for landscapes - with sharp corners and, curiously the exact opposite qualities of the Contax/Rollei 35mm, the appearance of a deep depth of field, i.e. the drop off in focus is very slow. Perfect for landscapes.

When they announced the ZE/ZF 35mm 1.4 there was much excitement about it and then much confusion as to why, unlike with the 21mm lens, they had radically changed the optical formula. On the FM forums there is a lot of speculation that it's down to certain chemicals they aren't allowed to use any more but nobody outside Zeiss really knows.

I think if they simply copied the old Rollei/Contax optical design for the 35/1.4 they would have a smash hit on their hands

Head to Head: Sigma 135 ART vs Zeiss Milvus 2/135mm | Dustin

Jopa said:
Thank you Dustin - great review as usually. For me AF makes a big difference shooting portraits, gave up on the 135 APO (Milvus' dad :) ) and sold it a few months ago...

That's a big deal, I know. I do own the Milvus 2/135mm, but I only reach for it in the situations where I have time to be more deliberate about shooting.

Sigma 100-400mm quick test

Alan,

interesting review by Dustin Abbott. Very impressive performance by little Sigma ... :

Thanks for your comments. To be fair, I have looked at just two copies of the Sigma 100-400mm (which is twice as many as each of the other sites!). My Sigma 150-600mm C is also particularly good at 400mm, and is clearly a very good copy. Lenstip has rated the Sigma 100-400mm as slightly better than the Canon 100-400mm II and much better than the copy of the Sigma 150-600mm C they tested. TDP has their copy of the Sigma at 400mm as just behind the Canon 100-400mm II, which is in line with my findings.

I think the Sigma 100-400mm II is a nice lens, and for much of the time the differences in IQ would not be noticeable - extreme cropping is where you need every scrap of resolution. The consistency and speed of AF might be drawbacks, but we need to hear more reports.

300 F2.8L IS II+1,4X or 400 DO 4 IS II

Can't add much except to say for birding my 300 virtually never had the 1.4X attached, always 2X. 420 typically wasn't enough and I only rarely used 300 bare, often for close-ups with extension tubes. It's better close focus than the DO II and that annoys me now that I'm using the 400. I find 400 X1.4 to be the equal at least of the 300 X2, with better AF and 800 is very nice to have. Like Alan my 300 sits and should be sold.

Updated Canon EOS 6D Mark II Specifications [CR2]

I used to use a dedicated camcorder (Canon HV20) but keeping the DSLR/camcorder that used different media/batteries was a pain. Having a backup camera that can do video as good as a consumer camcorder simplified a lot of things.

I suppose I could use my EOS M2 for video... But my Vixia HF M41 does a great job, is much easier to hand hold, uses SD cards (along with internal flash memory), and for handheld or moving subjects, the AF makes life easy. If I replace my M2 with an M6 (which is looking likely), I may shoot more video on an ILC (not that I shoot all that much video either way).

The HV20 was one of the earlier consumer camcorders that had 1080i. It recorded onto digital tape. When I built my current desktop years ago, I had to get a dedicated firewire card to interface with the HV20 because they no longer made motherboards with that port native, and it could only download the file to the computer at 1x tape speed. I was definitely NOT sad to put that on Ebay.

The M1 took over for a while but has been replaced with the 7DII. I got the camcorder so the wife could take videos of the kids, but that didn't really happen, so now I'm responsible for both video and stills. And, I find, it's much easier to allocate funds for a camcorder for an upgrade of the 2nd body. :)

Irix Announces 15mm f/2.4 Lenses for Canon EF

Anyone that has any more user experience with the Irix 15 yet? I read some tests that say it's nearly free of flare even when the sun is in the frame, like it often would be, and the example above here shows it simmilar to the Zeiss 21 which was hopeless.

I'm in the market for the Irix 15, so appreciate any user experiences.
See:

http://www.lenstip.com/486.9-Lens_review-Irix_15_mm_f_2.4_Blackstone_Ghosting_and_flares.html

In my opinion the lens does not ... shine (pun intended!)

Thanks! Yeah, that doesn't look good. I had a hard time with the Zeiss 21 and this looks worse.

Firmware: Canon EOS 5DS & Canon EOS 5DS R v1.1.1

Hector1970 said:
I find a very long lag between taking a photo and seeing it. It's not massive but it's not instantaneous like any other Canon camera. Could they sort that with a firmware update (or have they already). I find it very annoying when doing people shots and your are paused waiting to see the photo.

I find a very long lag in firmware updates for this camera line.

Canon Calculators

Mt Spokane Photography said:
In looking over a recent Canon financial report, I noticed that Calculators were important enough to be mentioned.

When was the last time you purchased a new calculator? I bought a TI graphing calculator for my son several years ago because his math class required it. None since. Between my old units, my computer, and my smart phone, I'm well fixed for calculators.

I'm not sure when I last saw a Canon Calculator for sale, so ... I checked Amazon and was surprised to see the varied assortment of calculators. Printing calculators are what I think of when I think of Canon units, and there are lots of them for sale, along with assorted parts and poor search results. (1,572 results returned).

Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art Preorders Start June 22, 2017

Not cheap ... but that was expected.

How so?

The 24-70mm f/2.8 is $400 cheaper than the Canon equivalent, and has optical stabilization.

The 14mm f/1.8 is $500 cheaper than the Canon 14mm f/2.8, and is 1.2 stops faster.
A lot of pricing history for third party lenses (Zeiss excluded) has us expecting low prices. But if manufactures are stepping up their game, and giving us near first party equivalent, or lenses that first parties will not take a risk on, then the high cost are justified. I just need to see the proof from independent testing.

Proof from independent test will be, indeed, required.

Hi Alan.
I'm going to go with "to find the anoraks out here that actually knew what it meant and see if anyone would ask!" :o ::) :) :) :D

Cheers, Graham.

Why do you call yourself Skatol: = beta-methyl indole; a malodorous nitrogen compound found in feces, formed by protein decomposition in the intestines? (Skatos = Greek for sh*t).

In case you haven't realised it, Graham, CR is for anoraks: anorak = Derogatory term, most frequently directed at people who obsessively pursue hobbies which consist almost entirely of gathering information about a favourite topic, generally a fairly benign and arcane device such as a specific type of computer.
Anorak in Norwegian is a special type of outer clothing, usually something we (used to) wear while skiing in the mountains. Colours preferably red or blue. If you are really crazy, you can wear grey.

Skatol, which is the old written form, now more commonly spelled Skatthold, is a special desk, which you can lock up, in the old days it was to hide the fact that you occasionally worked, today it is to hide from your wife that you spend too much time on CR ... ::)

Anorak came to mean "nerd" (sorta) because British (I think it was British) trainspotters would watch and record train passage while wearing anorak jackets, because it's Britain and cold. Anorak then went from referring to a coat to referring to trainspotter nerds to nerds of all stripes.

If you're on this forum you probably qualify.

Phottix Indra 500lc first impressions

jaayres20 said:
I just received the new Phottix Indra 500lc and just wanted to share my first impressions for those of you who may be interested in mixing a studio strobe with your Canon flashes.

I am a wedding photographer and have been using a strobe in addition to my flashes for a couple of years now. I went through a couple different strobes, but whatever I used required me to use some kind of other radio system with my Canon 600s. It was always a pain to me and I have been waiting for something like the Indra 500lc for a long time.

Here are a few observations I have had with just a little testing:
-It is small and portable. I am used to the flashpoint rove light which is similar in size to the B1 and this little Indra is tiny. The reflector is also small (5") and it comes in a nice little bag that is small but will cary the strobe, the battery and cord along with a Canon 600ex and lasso trigger (very similar to the Canon ST-E3-RT)

-The external battery is not really much of an additional hassle. Obviously it is nice to have a strobe with a built in battery and no cords, but the smaller size of the strobe almost makes up for the lack of an integrated battery. The battery that comes with the Indra is light weight, the cords have very secure connections and it connects to the light stand easily with a nice clamp bracket or a strap. I think the battery actually adds a better overall balance to the light stand and I am not as worried about having my light 13' in the air. Set up time is a few seconds longer, but those few seconds are hardly a hassle.

-Controlling the light with a Canon flash, ST-E3, or a phottix Laso is so nice! I hate having additional triggers with my on camera flash during a wedding. Even a trigger with a pass through hot shoe is annoying to me. Working directly with the Canon system is perfect for my needs. Not only can you control the power, but you can change the mode form manual to ETTL, turn on and off HSS and even turn on the modeling light all from the master flash.

-This light has plenty of power and the recycling time is very respectable. I am used to the 600 watt rove light but this thing has almost as much power and after some comparison shots, I don't see myself needing the extra 100 watts the rove light gives me. There is about a 2 second recycle time at full power, which is much faster than what I was used to with the rove light.

-The Laso trigger from Phottix seems like a much better option than the Canon ST-E3-RT. Not only does the Laso have an AF assist, but it seems to have a much greater range. I walked about 300 feet away and the Laso trigger worked flawlessly with both the Indra and a 600ex. However, when I tried to use my 430 ex III I had to move closer to get the lights to sync up.

I am looking forward to testing the light out at a wedding soon, but so far I am very impressed. Below is a picture with a size comparison of the Indra with a Canon 600ex. Also the camera is a 1DX2 with a 430ex III flash on top.
Thanks for the initial impressions. I see that the local price has dropped to a reasonable level here in South Africa so I'm keen to get one of these. Any updates and are you still happy or discovered any quirks or issues in the interim period?

Translucent umbrella for wildflower macros

I have a Lastolite TriGrip Diffuser but never tried it for flowers. It's possible to hold the diffuser in one hand (it has a handle or "grip" and is triangular in shape) and the camera in your right hand. It would be less than ideal though as you'd have limited range and movability. But what it would let you do is get a quick idea of how the flower would look with some test shots before setting up a tripod.

It also folds up fairly small. A bit expensive though and tbh I haven't really used it much. Seemed like a good idea at the time .... Hmmmm maybe I should try this flower thing.
That's exactly what I use - I have large two stop version and a smaller difflector version that also serves as a reflector. The bigger version is nice because it blocks a bigger area, but I wish it was the 1 stop version as the light tends to get a little flat with it. Alas, I needed the 2-stop version for mid-day portraits, which is what I bought it for...

I use a few of the small pocketboxes from Westcott that velcro with a strap to the head of flashes. Definitely work will for diffusing light and if you want more you can use the diffusion cap on the flash in addition to the box.

600EX-RT as Macro Lights

DanP said:
Thanks all. I found the MT-24EX on sale at a reputable dealer in Canada (CAD850), so I've ordered it along with 2 Wimberley F-2 brackets (that were surprisingly also cheaper in CAD, but special order). No doubt Canon will now issue an updated version with radio control.

YuengLinger - what is the bracket you are using to hold the 600EX-RT? Also, do the heads of the MT-24EX mount directly to the Wimberley F-2 brackets, or will I need an adapter? I couldn't find a manual for the MT-24EX on line.

Wimberley has a new AP-7 Cold Shoe that will fit the end of the F-2 Brackets. I haven't seen a better cold shoe out there. Just about anything will fit to the cold shoe. It solves many issues with the current cold shoes that are on the market.

I'm very much interested in how this thinking of the need for dual card slots came about. At what point in the history of photography did people start to fear the loss of their pictures so much that it drove the demand to include a second card slot?

I don't think that 'fear of loss' or the ability to make an instant backup was the reason Canon started including dual slots. Rather, it was intended to allow flexiblity in recording media. If you look back, the Canon 1D and 1Ds had a single CF card slot. With the 1DII and 1DsII, Canon added a second slot for an SD card. As PBD has pointed out, having cards of two different types isn't ideal for storing duplicates, especially when one slot has a slower speed and therefore becomes a bottleneck. For Canon, it's really only the 1D X that I'd consider offers a true backup capability (the prior 1-series and all other dual slot cameras are CF/SD, except the 1D X II which is CFast/CF). When they added dual slots to the 5-series, the CF+SD configuration meant an easier upgrade path for those using SD-slot cameras.

OTOH, while the Nikon D1 and D2 cameras had only a single slot, with the D3 they want to dual CF slots – that's a real duplication/backup solution. They've maintained that strategy in the D5, which you can get in dual-CF or a dual-XQD configurations, but not with mixed slots.

Thank you I was thinking that it could have been first introduced to help with transitioning between different card types but wasn't sure so left it out of my ramblings! It was quite evident with the 1DXII as the decision to keep the CF slot meant consumers with a bunch of CF cards weren't out of pocket and could continue shooting with the new camera and slowly transition to CFast.

Interesting about Nikon though. I guess they went a different way.

Speedlight Flash Diffuser Evolution

Very interesting topic. The Newer modifiers look's like a clone of the old but not forgotten Fstopper's disc https://fstoppers.com/product/fstoppers-flash-disc-portable-light-modifier. The sane price is a big plus.
The MagMod modifier looks kind of small to make a significant impact on light softeness. Most likely same as other similar modifiers it depends on the ceiling, so as long as you have one - it should work. For run and gun outdoors shots, high or non-white ceilings a disc-like solution theoretically should work better.
