5DSr great but wish mRAW was an viable option

I really wish the mRAW was a viable option to me and am a little disappointed mRAW is so terrible. Is a wedging photographer I would really like to go between 28mp and 50mp to help with file size but a few quick tests showed there is a lot more missing from a mRAW than resolution. Here is a quick test, original on the left, RAW in the middle, and mRAW on the right. Why are the colors so terrible in the shadows? I underexposed the image on purpose and processed it more than I would have if the image served more of a purpose than just a test, but look at the wheel well? The colors in the shadows turned green. What in the world happened? All of the settings were taken the same and all of the post processing sections were the same too.

I was hoping that for a certain kinds of less demanding assignments I could use mraw but ended up having tremendous problems fighting those greenish shadows in postproduction. The mraw in 5dsr is an option not to be used unless they do some serious fix which I doubt. It doesn't matter what software is used to convert the raw file. I did a comparison test, photographed a dark brown leather sofa in a dark light in raw and in mraw. In raw the sofa is brown and in mraw is green.

Canon 430 III-RT Overheat Protection Issue

Hi everybody :)

I've just picked up a 430 III-RT to use as a secondary flash unit along side my 600RT.

I've been reading some user reviews and although the majority of users agree this is a great flash, there are others who have written that the overheat protection mode is a fail. Apparently it kicks in after about 32 cycles and falls well short of the 430 II's performance.

Can anybody guide on this and whether there's been firmware fixes to address this? I couldn't find anything on the net.

Thanks all :)

Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 Review | Dustin

Great review, as usual
wish Zeiss had done a 21 or 24mm instead (maybe a 21mm is not feasible anyway)
is just not the right focal for me, which saves me a bunch of money.....

As I noted in the review it seems like 28mm is no longer the preferred focal length for many photographers. I think I might have favored a 35mm, myself, so I guess we've both saved some money.

I think this lack of modern love for the 28mm focal length stems from the earlier days of 35mm photography, say '50s to late 70s, when a 24mm f/2.8 lens was twice as expensive as the equivalent quality 28mm f/2.8. So a 24mm was beyond many people's pocket. As manufacturing technology improved and the 24mm dropped down to the same price as a 28 people jumped on the 24. The 35mm had tended to be a stop faster for a little less money than the equivalent quality 28, so has always been popular as an affordable, reasonably fast and wide lens.

Just a little history ! ;)

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM Coming April 5, 2017 [CR3]

By the way, STM motor makes no sense in a dedicated macro lens where real FTM support is a must. :( I always try to focus before turning the camera on and with the STM motor this is not possible. :'(

+1. Focus by wire is not ideal for stills, and that's doubly so for macro work.

But at least give Canon some credit: the priciest STM lens I can see at B&H is $599 for the 24-105 non-L. Canon is not jamming STM / FBW focusing on to the better lenses like Sony is. I am appalled that Sony is asking for ~ $2k for FBW lenses when Canon and Nikon can deliver far better FTM mechanical focusing for the same (or in many cases, lower) prices.

Sigma 100-400mm Us price and preorder

I notice that it is a bit smaller than the Canon 100-400, which can be and advantage. Any early comparisons out there yet on image quality?

I know the Canon 100-400 II has almost supernatural performance on a 1.4x teleconverter, which would be hard to approach. I use that as my normal setup with the 5D4. But for that price, I'm interested. When I eventually get a bigger white (probably 400 DO II), I'd consider trading down to help clear the budget, especially as this would go from my primary lens to a secondary.

I don't know of any reviews or comparisons yet, and I've been looking. Admittedly, I'm not the best at it.

I feel im in a similer position as you. currently use the sigma 150-600C with great results so far. a lot of my birding and wildlife with my wife, and the sigma is just to heavy for her. Ive been considering the 100-400ii for her, since it's lighter and the weight seemed more so at the camera end unlike the sigma. I too am reaching for a big white in the next couple years, and was hesitant to spend more then 3k here in Canada for 100-400ii. This may be the perfect lens for her.

I look forward to some reviews.

Does new Tamron 70-200 2.8 look sharper than Canon's on TDP?

I shall elaborate... the Tamron is the same price as a used (MINT CONDITION) Canon 70-200
And only around $100 cheaper than a brand new Canon on ebay.

I understand that list price on the high street is probably a different story, but all my lens shopping is done on ebay to avoid the extortionate list price.

Review: Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus

I'd like to point out the ZE version of this lens (which is also friggin amazing) is marked down to $1499 at B&H right now: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/909189-REG/Zeiss_1999_675_135mm_f_2_0_Apo_Sonnar_ZE.html
Nice call...Dustin Abbott gave that lens a quiveringly great review!....and that is some serious savings on that lens. So is this lens discontinued with the advent of the Milvus?

But it's also worth noting that Dustin - consistent with every other review I've read - says that the Rokinon/Samyang 135mm f/2 is barely inferior to the Zeiss. I've not done the comparison myself, but I have compared it to my 135L, and the Rokinon/Samyang is plainly better in every respect (leaving aside AF). And unlike the Zeiss the Rokinon/Samyang costs c. $450 (I paid $100 more for mine a year ago and thought it a ludicrous bargain then; it's obviously even more so now). At that price, lack of IS and AF may seem less significant. (I use mine on a Sony a7rII which has IBIS and makes MF - which I prefer anyway - easy.)

More Golf

Hi Tex.
Nice series, a couple of stand out shots for me are the one with the sand flying, the child on dads shoulders (is that you reflected in the glasses) :) and the one below, I bet it took him ages to put that divet back together and stomp it down! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

I was able to shoot the Puerto Rico Open for the 2nd time this year. This year i went back with better equipment and the cool resolve of an experienced pro. And immediately encountered tons of problems. Rain, heavy expensive equipment, more rain, power outages, distant muddy parking, a very grumpy photo editor... It was a whole lot of fun.

Selling 70-200 F4 IS and 400 5.6 for 100-400 F4.5-5.6 II???

I have better keeper rate for BIF with my 400mm f/5.6 than with my 100-400 II. For more general wildlife I prefer the zoom. I also have both the 70-200mm f/2.8 II and f/4 IS. They both have their place. 2.8 indoors and portraiture, and f/4 when traveling. The 100-400mm zoom can get lost in the sky much more than the prime. On the other hand a 1.4X TC works well on the zoom, with appropriate body, than on the old prime.

Wishlist for 6D mark II - 80D with a full frame sensor?

I fully expect the 6D II to be in the 28 mp range. Canon made a mistake by putting fewer megapixels into the original 6D than the 5DIII. They ended up with an entrance level camera with better low light performance than their professional model. They won't make that mistake again.

I would also expect that the 6DII autofocus will have more in common with the 70D than the 80D, although it will likely have multiple f8 focus points to support sales of the 100-400 L with extender. Body style will remain similar to the XXD models (no joystick, etc.) Articulating screen and touch screen controls highly likely.
I didn't see it at all as a mistake but an option. Better low light true but far less options for anything moving. The 3 main FF bodies are very different, then the S/R came along and muddied things up a bit...THAT was Canon playing the MP game with competitors and silencing critics. I know quite a few 6D users and they are all very satisfied. They knew what they were getting into what with center AF but were all pleasantly surprised by the iso functions. Yet no one thought it was an inexpensive way to get around buying a 5D3, it's severely less robust feature set is well known and accepted.

Different tools for different folks.
One of the most in-hospitable places in the UK is beyond Tavy Cleave on Dartmoor in driving fine rain in winter. My 6D has survived this without any issues as it has on many a time on the North Cornish coastline. Obviously it was not left out in torrential rain but its much hardier than people think.

Samyang 10mm f/2.8 - powdery focus ring?

A toothbrush is another good tool for getting into the cracks. Those rubber bands are one of the parts that Canon outsources, and occasionally, they have put too much of a ingredient in the rubber that makes the milky powder.

You do not have to send the lens back, if it happens, just call Canon and ask them to send you another rubber band. Thats all they are, get a small tool under one edge, and stretch it as you pull it off.

Infographic: Camera Industry Sales Facts for 2016

The way I see it, there are photographers and picture takers. The photographer might use a smart phone to take a photo because he knows why he is using it, but the picture taker does not want to know the details. They only want to snap a photo and either share it or just look at it later. The equipment used to take the picture has no value to them.

The question is, can the manufacturers recapture a sizable slice of this market?

The picture takers, as you call them, are not interested in taking photographs, all they're interested in is creating social content. It will be difficult for a camera manufacturer to produce a product with added value for this type of consumers.

As I see it, there was a hype for digital cameras around 2007-2011. Digital cameras were cool at that time. Today even smartphones have lost their coolness factor, as the phone market reaches saturation. At best the camera market should go back to the healthy level before the hype.

I think it's also important to note that people, when it comes to taking "meaningful" pictures (birthdays, weddings etc.), often use a camera in addition to the smartphone. They seem to be aware that the camera produces better pictures (or at least _feel_ that way). Camera manufacturers should build on that and on creating a better, simpler, easier, more fun user experience (and not like Sony on blowing up the spec sheet).

Oliver

There are people who see a point-and-shoot take a washed out picture with using built-in flash and say, "Beautiful!" -- because the picture captures a group of friends at a pub. What's beautiful isn't the photograph, but the content: if it's a photo of the next table over, it's no longer beautiful. The requirements for that photo are just to be in-focus and to capture the moment.

But they're willing to pay money for a family or wedding portrait, and they still say "wow" when they see an amazingly composed landscape or sunset. Although seeing those photos makes them happy, they're not really interested in trying to make that shot themselves.
