Nikkei: Canon Carefully Cultivates Critical New Ventures

''Old core businesses such as camera and office equipment have matured.''

TROLOL!

That is if Canon one refuses to unleash an epic product winner once in a while.
Lets hope Canon will not cripple the specs of future Tobisha and Oce products. Which are great companies!

The article looks to me like Canon chooses to dive in the victim role.

It is their own fault not bringing out cameras that offer high valued added service.
They could have easily bring out:

- Pocketcamera with 35mm stuck lens and full frame 2mp that blow out the high iso performance of anything on the consumer market. Ideal for the consumers who always manage to find the worse light possible and blame their camera.
- Pocketcamera with 35mm stuck lens with the 5DSR sensor that gave a consumer the max print size possible.
- G5X Mark II with GONE: shutter lag!, headphone input, LP E6N batteries and dual pixel focus that blows the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and Sigma 20mm F1.4 on 70D/80D out of the game for all youtube blogging purposes
- a new XC10/15/20 4k machine with interchangeable lenses that can compete with the GH5/A7S video spec wise.
- A consumer EFS 400mm F8 lens that gives people a tele that goes beyond their imagination for a Rebel cam. (Samyang already made a 600mm F8 for the EF M)
- a 5DS with a ccd sensor that actually does HSS up to 1/16.000s (remember 1D classic) which is what you need if you want to compete against the high end medium formats in the high end portraiture/fashion industry.
- the option to give electronic shutter up to 1/32000s in their higher end dslrs.
- Make a new burst option in the 1DX Mark II to take 2 pictures when the mirror moves up and down, instead of 1.
With electronic shutter they should be able to have a burst rate of 28FPS with 14 focus moments that blows out all MFT 4/6K frame grab features out of the game.
- Ability on all their consumer cameras that gives a downsampling from max resolution JPEG to 2MP jpeg before sending to their phones for share purpose on FARTBOOK. Consumers getting frustrated with the slow current options to send 20mp raw/jpeg to a phone and then only to downsample it there.

I do not know the Asian market that well, but I do know there are lots of people in Europe that are willing to pay for canon products like I wrote above.

Nikon 100th Anniversary Commemorative Models Formally Announced

MrFotoFool said:
The special anniversary edition of the 70-200 comes with the internal glass elements that make up the lens? Does that mean if you buy the non-anniversary edition you don't get any glass elements and it is just a hollow metal tube? :o

The glass elements are extra goodies shown below, copied from Nikon's website. Very cool stuff.

Clouds or northern lights?

Kit Lens Jockey said:
This was near Lexington, Michigan. It's about halfway up the coast of the "thumb" of MI. This is looking south.
I'd think that if those were Northern Lights seen looking south, the view northward would have been amazing.

I have seen Northern Lights in various parts of the L.P.. I have fond memories of a long ago weekend drive around Lake Huron that was lit up every night. I've seen them in Dearborn, city lights and all.

Rokinon SP 14mm 2.4

If you are careful about your levels distortion isn't too bad. Vignette seems to be the primary weakness, but not as bad as the 2.8/14mm.

Le Chateau Montebello by Dustin Abbott, on Flickr

I've been focused on a bunch of Tamron lenses, but I do have a first look video up on this: http://bit.ly/SP14mmFL plus an image gallery: http://bit.ly/SP14Gallery

I'll be intensifying my coverage this week as I start to clear my desk of other reviews. I'm fairly impressed by the lens, though I think not adding weather sealing was a pretty huge mistake. The build is otherwise gorgeous.

Camera insurance recommendations?

I have confirmed with my new homeowner policy what someone pointed out above. They will NOT cover camera gear if you make any money at photography, even if it is a miniscule amount (as it is in my case). It seems if you do have even a small, part-time business that the best bet is to get it through a photo organization (NANPA or PPA or the like). I have NOT heavily researched this, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 VC G2

An early preview of the new Tamron 70-200's AF performance -- including AF consistency on a fixed target -- is shared here:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=20305

I appreciate that it's a f/2.8 zoom and not an f/1.4 prime, but it would appear that Tamron has had better luck at reversing Canon AF routines than Sigma has.

I was involved in a major project that projection mapped an iceberg onto all four sides of the Auckland Museum (New Zealand). This included video sections of ice collapse and sounds from icebergs (as they creaked and groaned and collapsed), augmented with specially composed music. We used 22 video projectors to cover 8000 m2, which I understand is the biggest projection mapping project in the Southern Hemisphere.

The trailer is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTB1Zu7H44w

Joe used Nikon gear to shoot stills and videos, but Canon lent us a huge amount of gear to document the installation. I'll post a link once the video of the installation is available.

Awesome installation Frodo, fantastic to see people here truly pushing artistic boundaries.

I also noticed something but didn't pay much attention before reading your post. What about Canon DPP? LR kind of sucks in general. The 5dsr files look awful in it, C1 or DPP work WAY better.

Thanks for yout input. When you say the files suck in Lr, in what way do you feel they are better in DPP?

The reason I use Lr is because I know it, and the fact that all the others I have tried can't figure out how I can see my editing and I find no option to mask sharpening etc..

Based strictly on the 5dsr RAW experience, I can tell the files opened in LR look much darker with excessively high contrast, compared to DPP or C1. I don't use DR optimization or any other "enhancements" (I know DPP would apply them automatically). I've ended up buying Huelight color profiles so LR could be usable (as an alternative to conversion in DPP -> LR).

Hmm, and this is after everything is reset in Lr? I know they apply all kinds of stuff when you first install, but the first thing I do is reset EVERY little bit of Adobe cooking. The "Adobe Standard" color profile s horrible and often will look too contrasty, but don't use it any way. I compared the opened and reset files in Lr and DPP and they look exactly the same. Maybe it's a default tone curve or something that's messing up for you in Lr?

I have had those plastic mounts break on me with 50mm f1.8 lens and more recently the 10-18mm STM lens.

How did they break? Did you drop 'em? Would be interesting to know.

Luckily my 50STM has a metal mount. Not bad for such a low-priced lens. Even the EF-M 18-55mm has a metal mount, which is one of the reasons why I bought it for my mum (instead of the 15-45)... besides the fact that it is darn sharp for a kit lens (got it for 70 EUR). It doesn't look and feel like a cheap toy lens. I wonder how some frequently used plastic mount lenses will look like after some years...

For me, a lens is more of a long-term investment and so build quality is one important aspect imo, regardless of the price. The lenses I've mentioned are a good example of a low -cost but still decent build quality.

I hope that Canon will continue this way with the new EF-S lens.
I never dropped my camera with lens attached to it, have dropped it couple of times while swapping lenses in cold weather. With regards to 10-18mm lens. It broke during a bus travel in Himalayas. The lens was mounted on camera and kept in Lowepro Photo Hatchback 22L and the bag was kept in overhead compartment while I was travelling in Himalayas. when I reached my destination and I went to swap the lens, I noticed the mount was cracked. Roads in Himalayas are terrible at best and the bumpy bus ride took its toll form of a mount repair. New 50mm STM is definitely a step up in terms of build quality compared to 50mm f1.8 II lens.

And yes the SD naming is getting more and more confusing by trying to make it easier.

Canon Celebrates its 14th Consecutive Year of No. 1 Marketshare in Global Interchangeable-Lens Digit

Re: Canon Celebrates its 14th Consecutive Year of No. 1 Marketshare in Global Interchangeable-Lens D

I see your point Graham. But for the record, in 2000, I had used the Nikon DSLR offering, about $5k, and the Kodak offerings, about $25K! So I thought a 3 MP DSLR for $3k was a bargain! How quickly the technology has changed.

Cameras must be put in checked luggage on international flights

LDS said:
NancyP said:
Pros and others traveling to Turkey etc are just likely to not fly direct, but to go through a European hub with luggage retrieved at the hub and taken through customs by the owner to the flight to the USA. The regulations aren't going to ban laptops etc from carry-on luggage in between NYC and Dusseldorf.

Turkish is itself a large airline with its hub in Istanbul - it's not just the base airport of a regional company - it flies directly to several US destinations. It was able to run ads with several sport stars, including Lionel Messi and Kobe Bryant, to promote its flight services and its large network.

Retrieving the luggage usually requires you to re-check in it, it takes time, and in some airports, a lot of walking :)
Dubai and Istanbul are two of the world's largest international flight hubs and Turkish and Emirates are two very big airlines... Probably have 50 flights/yr routed through these two.

Is there a correct choice for a backpack on a RTW trip?

If you are carrying any kind of weight, or for a long time, nothing beats a real backpack. Photography backpacks do not have a decent waist belt, and that is where most of the weight is carried. They also have terrible shoulder straps. Look for a camera insert to carry your lenses and something like one of those toploader bags to carry the camera where it is accessible. And don't forget about a rain cover for the pack!

Leica Announces Thalia: New Lenses for Big Picture Cinematography

HTML:
<p><strong>Leica Press Release:</strong></p>
<p>Responding to the increasing need for character-driven, large-format optics, CW Sonderoptic introduces the Leica Thalia series of prime lenses. The set of 9 spherical lenses provides an image circle of 60mm diagonal, which covers ARRI Alexa 65, VistaVision, and Super 35 film and digital formats while maintaining a consistent look and feel through all focal lengths.</p>
<p>The focal lengths of the lenses include 24, 30, 35, 45, 55, 70, 100, 120, and 180mm. The lenses are available in PL mount and offer /i Technology metadata contacts in the mount. The lenses maintain a 95mm front diameter and matched focus and iris ring locations for consistent accessory use. For large format lenses they are also incredibly compact and lightweight, with lengths between 4.9”-6.9” (124.5-175cm) and weighing between 2.4-3.75lbs (1.06-1.6kg).</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>One of the most unique features of the Leica Thalia lenses is their iris design, which maintains a circular shape through the entire aperture range. In addition to always being round, the bokeh is smooth, distinct and full of character, which helps the out of focus elements maintain structure and shape without falling apart.</p>
<p>Although the lenses are based on the Leica S medium format lenses, they feature significant optical and mechanical changes, including: increased image circle, new coatings, new iris design, 270° rotation cam focus mechanism, and entirely new mechanics and housings. Additionally, the 55mm lens is a completely new lens.</p>
<p>“The look of these lenses answers what we have heard from many cinematographers, and not just in regards to image circle,” said managing director Gerhard Baier.</p>
<p>“While they are new lenses, they do offer many of the characteristics that have encouraged cinematographers to pair older lenses with digital sensors. They are clear without being overly sharp. Focus is smooth and forgiving without appearing soft. Skin tones are natural and smooth with an accurate color rendition.”</p>
<p>The Leica Thalia lenses will be on display at the CW Sonderoptic booth at NAB (C4345) and will start delivering in Summer 2017.</p>
<p>For more information visit the product page at <a href="http://www.cw-sonderoptic.com/leica-thalia/" target="_blank">www.cw-sonderoptic.com/leica-thalia/</a> or contact us at [email protected].</p>
