Most difficult high school sport to photograph

Nice TexPhoto, thanks for sharing the technique.
My biggest challenge actually is totally different. It is a wheelchair basketball and a goalball.
For the first, it is because the light in the gym is flickering like crazy and I think by a whole stop and at least 500K. The green is constant but the orange is all over the place. Only one out of 4 or 5 shots are good, and always the non-interesting ones. I got my 1DX II, I can't wait for the tournament to start again.
As far as goalball goes, it is always shot in very dim light (sport for the blind) and you are not authorized to make noise. I am thinking of the 4K grab (quiet and has 1.4 crop.) and anxious to see the result. Have to wait for the tournament to come to my city though.

Motion Blur vs Frozen Action

Since it is about opinion, this is mine.
But I will start with someone else's; it was said on this forum (by someone else): "how could you stand out from the crowd if you do what everybody is doing?".
My opinion, pan is a photography technique. Convey motion is only one of them. Unfortunately, everybody (almost) thinks that is its sole purpose.

OK, what if you use it in very low light where your ISO and noise would be too much for you to accept because you need to freeze the motion? A friend of mine asked me to shoot his sister during speed skating competition once (because I have a better gear) because he was not able to get decent photos the year before. He was shooting at ISO 12800, 1/500sec, I did it at 1/25th sec, ISO 800. Guess how surprised he was.
It can be used as well to separate someone from others, when their speed is not the same; like in bike race, or the opposite - when you want to show that they have the same speed?
It can really be used for different things, the more you use it the more these scenarios show up on your path.
I don't have two photos that showcase the difference as you did but here is an example of my panning.

Focus Stacking etc. with the 5Dmk4

Mikehit said:
That makes sense.
If Canon have not yet updated their software yet I would be very surprised if anyone else has had the accessibility to code to do the same.
Canon has updated DPP and EOS Utility to support the 5DIV, but EOS utility cannot automatically take "stacked" shots like DSLR Controller can. I looked at the Web Page for Helicon Remote and the 5DIV was not yet mentioned as being supported.

I guess the solution will be DSLR Controller or Helicon Remote once they support the 5DIV.

Question for super-experts

I have a 5D Mklll and a 7D mkll. Full frame carries noticeably more fine detail which suits landscape. Yes, lenses are important, as an everyday lens I use the the 24-105 a lot, I would seriously consider the mkll version of this lens when the test results are out....it is very useful for landscapes saving carrying a lot of additional weight.
Back to bodies, I would not personally buy a 6D, courtesy of its 1 cross type sensor. The 5D Mklll has 41 cross types I think, making focussing far more reliable all across the screen. You can get a 5D Mklll now for the same price as the expected price on the 6D mkll - assuming it happens.
Get a new or well cared for 5D Mklll and then look at high quality glass. I don't struggle with dynamic range, so don't be fooled into spending an extra 2K on an additional 2 stops of dynamic range.

120MP Canon FF SLR showed off again yesterday

I fully understand the English you are using. It is the description of your experience that is puzzling me

without using a tripod - you will not get the full benefit of the increased resolution.

I agree with that completely - it is like putting a speed limiter on a sports car. But that does not sotp the 5DSR resolving more detail than the 5D3 or the 5D3 resolving more detail than the 5D2 (accepting this is made more complex by changing technologies between sensor generations).

Where your comments differ to those using the 5DSR is when you said
the larger pixels in the FF camera gave me substantially better image quality than a more pixel dense crop sensor of approximately the same MPs when hand held and using that particular lens.
Which reads to me that higher pixels giving a lower image quality being a simple fact of life.

I think larger pixels in a FF camera will give you more resolution (or perhaps it is merely more sharpness) than the same amount of pixels in a crop camera using the same lens.
I was not denying your experience but what I said was also true - those with the 5DSR have repeatedly said they get more detail out of the 5DSR even handheld.
But this is where there are so many variables. The bit in bold suggests that you have (to pluck numbers out of the air) 200,000 5D pixels imaging the eye of the model and you have 200,000 5DSR pixels imaging the eye of the model and the 5D will give better image quality. I generally agree as there is more per-pixel noise on the 5DSR and in theory this would hold if it were 200,000 5DSR pixels of 200,000 7D2 pixels.

But it also depends on how you use the camera and this is where making bald statements like 'higher pixel density gives lower image quality' seems strange. With wildlife you are often limited in where you can stand in relation to the subject so it is less about 'the same number of pixels' as 'shoot form a specific position' which gives more pixels on a particular part of the image.
In a lot of townscapes or landscapes you are limited to where you can stand to get a specific perspective so you change lens, not change position. Again this gives more pixels on any given subject.

Also, IME of comparing my 6D and 7D2 I have noted something that I have read in some reviews that the 7D2 has a tad more noise but resolves more detail which adds a bit of spice to the definition of 'image quality' and here everyone has their own limits/preferences.

Tips for back button set up

These AF-functions work on 7DII and 5DIV. But do you need so many different settings?

I use my (repaired) 7DII for BIF or static birds that are far away, the 5DIV for static/bigger birds and birds that come along....

I add some of my personal thoughts: (used with 600mm&1.4 extender)
I changed the "*" custom settings to "Register/Recall shooting function". So I can optimize not only the AF settings, but other things like shutter speed, and a lot more too.

Maybe some of us can write to Canon,if they could do such a video/manual to show the optimal / all features of the higher end bodies.

Retailers who will work with you on purchases

gunship01 said:
All,

Anyone know of retailers who might extend a payment plans to those who desire to make the jump to Full Frame? I ask as I saw a local furniture commercial which offered zero interest for a year on larger purchases.

Many thanks for the info in advance.

Major League

Thanks for all the replies! As pointed out, all exif data is only a click of the photo away.

Here are some photos from the second game. This was a night game, or at least a dusk to Night game.

As you can see in the final 2, I try to get very sharp photos even at night, but when I have good ones, I try to get some motion blur photos. They never sell, but I like them.

WonderPana FreeArc XL for Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens

mackguyver said:
Has anyone used this yet? I ordered the TS-E 17 f/4L version the other day specifically to use with their ND1000 filter for architectural shots to blur out people & cars and was curious what the XL version is like, other than huge. I have also been using the Breakthrough Filters 10-stopper with great luck on my 24-70 f/2.8II and 70-200 f/2.8 IS II lenses.

It's it funny what we now consider a "huge filter". Not long ago we were whining about 82mm threads...I remember cobbling a X pro sized rig for my full frame Sigma 12-24mm mkI. I thought those 100mm filters were big. Then I got a TS-e 17L and a Wonderpanna and those filters are like dinner plates. Like you, I'm after a CPL, 5 stop and a 10 stop. So now there's even bigger options available for the 11-24L...I'm like...What??? All this would be SO much easier if Canon, Sigma and Nikon developed drop in filters for their Uber-Wides. Or it won't be long until we are trying to attach filters the same size as the objective elements on our big wild life lenses.

85mm 1.2

Pookie said:
I'll take the 85 1.2 any day of the week... consistent money maker in my portrait/wedding business. I use it with strobes, low light in churches & stage and well, everything.

Here is another thread where the b5L made me a ton of dough and showed up on billboards here in the bay area fro months... http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=26177.msg583020#msg583020

The 85mm f/1.2L II is the classic portrait lens, along with the 200mm f/2L -- especially when paired with the 1Dx. Go for it.

SanDisk Launches World's First 1TB SD Card

Halfrack said:
You're missing the point of these cards - yes they can be used for video, but really the space that needs them is the time lapse folks. I've filled their 512gb cards for a few different projects, where I have ac power, but may not have access for a few days or weeks.

Lexar does a 512gb CompactFlash, but that's it. The largest Cfast is 256gb. If sd is the large/slower/cheaper medium going forward, I'm fine with it.
agreed!
I did a time lapse (to be rendered into a 4K video) of a 14 meter dish being assembled... 19 days and 50,000 pictures later, I had 700GB of images to process. Every day I had to swap in a new 64G card. One big card would have been a lot easier....

Fuji X-T2 outresolves the 5DS R?

Sporgon said:
Actually this type of thing isn't new; it may have been the same site who demonstrated that the Pentax K3 produced sharper images than the Nikon D600. Print it big, then you'll see the real story.

I'd be more inclined to believe it if even DPReview wasn't showing the 5DsR taking a huge dump on the X-T2 in terms of detail.
