5D Mk IV "Killer Apps"? Narrowing them down

Touchscreen with auto-rotate. I'd like menus to be nicer to navigate when my camera is fixed on a tripod.

While playing video games recently I got to thinking about camera control. It'd be nice to have a video remote controller. e.g.
- Focus on A and set B. Push [button X] to time touchless focus pull from subject A to subject B.
- Focus on A and set B. Push [button Y] to time touchless focus pull from A to B then subsequently track B.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM - my experience (and comparison with 50mm f/1.8 II)

I had a different approach to buy my copy of the 50mm f1.8 STM.

I do have the 50mm f1.4 USM - and I was pretty satisfied. But I realized what´s the asset of these lenses in the Canon portfolio: It gives every beginner a top notch lens for a bargain: no acuse for bad images. But I do use µ43 as well - where a sense like the Nifty-Fifty is missing. I did something there - and had to test the original as well. I was blown away - and my copy is much better than the 1.4. In every topic I checked out. But pixel peeping is one toping shooting experience another one.

I do write a blog and I would like to share this here http://bit.ly/1NtFALq

Unfortunately I am not allowed to embed the photos....

Canon U.S.A.’s Complimentary Promotion For CarePAK PLUS

Re: Canon U.S.A.s Complimentary Promotion For CarePAK PLUS

Its great that they offer add-on, but I really wish they would offer a longer warranty period than 1 year, especially when buying their very expensive items such as a 5D3 body, 100-400 II, etc. If you make a good product and you stand behind it, you should do so by offering more of a warranty.

Reply from Roger Cicala - re: robustness of articulating screens

I don't have a 70D, but I would think that the 70D would be a dream camera for live view macro shooting.

I do not do much macro. But when I do my 70D + EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro lens have been my go to and it works very well. The articulating screen is the most useful. The touchscreen + DPAF is solid as well but less useful. Often I use that to get the focus started. But then fine tune with manual afterwards as the AF is going to focus on the closest thing it can find. And that green square in liveview is not much of a focal point as a giant focus area.

To the OP, thanks for sharing your conversation with Roger.

Gear setup: Two 5D mark iii's and a 1DX or a 5DS and a 1DX?

Ive carried out a number of tests over the last two weeks with the 5DS hand-held down to 1/20th second with a 24-70mm zoom and then done the same with a 6D. The outcome is not a surprise in the sense you can hand-hold with the 6D down to a slower speed but the difference is not as great as some make out if you follow good technique. All of that said Im not an advocate for hand-held landscape shots I like to take my time unless the light is changing rapidly like you get in quickly coming & going storms.
As others have stated the benefit of the 5DS / 5DSr is the higher resolution in cropping which you can do far more with this camera than a 5D MKIII or 6D. Without cropping the pictures especially if viewed on something like Apple 5K & 4K retina iMac screens is very noticably sharper particularly fine detail like leaves, fur etc.
I think there is a place for the 5D MKIII / 6D resolution and the 5DS/5DSr resolution, the 5DS is definately not a sports or action camera or a very low light camera but that resolution also helps its colorimagery "pop" in a somehow more pleasing way at least in landscape.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM on Sony A7Rm2

There is still the warning on the Lens Rentals site that the adapter randomly locks up the Sony cameras, so for money shots, its a risk and could cost a lot in lost opportunities.

I can confirm this behavior. For critical shots, I've not been using adapted lenses (or the A7R2 at all).

Stability and AF performance both seem highly dependent on version of firmware. The 0.46 for A7RII makes a big difference, all my Canon lenses now focus fast and accurately except the old 100/2 which still seems a bit unstable.

Yes, now there is no issues with AF speed and AF precision when using Canon lenses on A7r2 using Metabones IV adaptor.
The one thing to remember though is that on sensor PDAF autofocus has problems focusing from total defocus especially when using long tele lenses which is not an issue for DSLRs AF. So it is better to pre-focus manually (that something is slightly visible) and then AF will complete the process with extremely high precision. For normal zoom lenses e.g. 24-70 F/2.8L m2 AF works well from any point.
Here is example of continuous focus (AF-C) tracking moving object at tele end (400mm) and providing 100% AF precision. Full frame and 100% crop.

DpReview posts 90% Score on Sony /RII - What will the 5DSR get?

You are right that DPR mention a lot of cons with the A7RII, but in my opinion, those cons should lower their rating, and make it impossible to achieve the 90% score.

I don't follow. Does 90% represent perfection?

Does 100%?

I wondered that myself before posting, not because of the sliding scale (which I didn't realize DPR uses), but because what is "perfection?"

Either way ;)

New EF-S Lenses on the Horizon? [CR2]

macVega said:
I have used both focusings systems enuff to know that USM stands for "Ultra Sonic Motor" and STM stands for "Slow Terrible Motor"... ???

Haha so true, though I would argue Slightly (less) Terrible Motor (relative to MM) since its at least a little quieter and maybe a little smoother from the little I've used it, though really no faster and the FTM is really just a FBW system. Then again, that's essentially what I've had to live with on handheld camcorders up until this point, with the VX-2100/PD-170 through the DVX100 and the AC130A I just sold to save up for the 4.6K...but those systems were obviously much better tuned and more responsive relative to consumer technology designed for folks who don't have to rely on it to get critical focus, like STM.

Built-in automatic microadjustment possible?

its unnecessary for DPAF focus

Only in Live view would it be unnecessary. Focus calibration would still be needed through the optical viewfinder.

Try quoting my entire statement rather than trying to change the meaning by quoting just part of it.

"but its unnecessary for DPAF focus, so if that ever becomes a practical primary method of AF, AFMA may go away"

Samsung Imaging moving to Fuji?

We've lately heard about Samsung leaving the camera business here
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=27727.msg547724#msg547724

Seems like the department will move over to Fuji.
At least the rumor website seems to think that, because they've already renamed themselves into "Fuji Rumors", see top left here
http://www.samsungcamerarumors.com/

I wonder what the guys over at http://www.fujirumors.com/ think of that ;)

Canon Commemorates Production of 80 millionth EOS-Series Interchangeable-Lens Camera

Well I have 3 EOS bodies over 25 years and two of them are film... I have about 20 EF lenses, so I think it shows ratios can vary a lot.
My film cameras are not used at this time so I have only 1 EOS camera in use right now, and some of my early lenses have not
been used in 15 years or more just never got around to selling them. I'm a little surprised the number of lenses is not more given
the number of bodies they have sold. It's interesting.

If I ever start shooting things that move I might be tempted to add the 7DII to my kit then again I could just rent out a 1DX - I really want an excuse to shoot with one of them!

You know what they say, "once you use a 1DX body that's black, you never go back".

+1
I can only agree on this point. For me it is really FF that makes the difference. I do see very beautiful photos of the 7D2, but when I use the 7D2 and 1Dx together, then I choose always the photos of the 1Dx at the end.

Patent: EF 20-45mm f/2.8-4

moreorless said:
You could argue this wouldn't be an entirely "new" focal length for Canon as I'v heard a few ASPH shooters say they loved the range a 16-35mm gave them on that format which would be near identical to a 20-45mm FF lens.

My 16-35 f2.8 MkI practically lived on my APS-H cameras, mainly because that was as wide as I could go with 2.8 zooms and it didn't use the weak corners. But the range from an effective 21-45 is pretty limiting and the 24-70 was too long at the wide end. I am so glad that bastard sensor size is dead.

Panasonic's Post Focus

Its not focus stacking, focus stacking does not let you change the focus point, it increases depth of field.

It does look like a clever implementation of allowing you to move from one image to another to pick the image that is in focus on your desired subject. It takes 50 images at 30 fps and changes the focus point for each image. Then, you can move between the images to pick the one that focuses where you want it.

If the images stay in the camera, then you can focus stack them to get more resolution and depth of field.
