Advice needed: AF of 5DSR for wildlife sufficient?

In my experience 5DsR AF with proper tuning is somewhat better than 5DmkIII&7dMkII (which were stellar to begin with). I got rid of all my other bodies within a month after getting 5DsR. No issues whatsoever with larger animals, but smaller birds in flight are challenging regardless the camera you use...

P.S. This is based on use with 100-400 II and 500/4 II

An Update to the EOS 70D Coming Soon? [CR1]

I would be thrilled to see a 70D firmware update to overcome the ISO compensation complaints -- but even more important would be slightly better algorithms for noise reduction and dynamic range.
The 70D, as is, is my perfect APS-c camera except that I would lust for three "C" modes on the selector & fewer "auto gizmo" modes. Can't do that with firmware (unless they include a new knob! hint... hint... hint)
I don't think that I would buy a new 70D replacement when my 70D will absolutely compliment the 5D-whatever which will be my next purchase.
Mr. Canon: Take the best of the 70D & 7DII and put them into the 5D-IV and I'll order it on day one!

Wind is turning?

I find the depreciation on the a7 series revealing. Mint, up to date Nikon or Canon gear tends to sell used for virtually the new price less the (20%) Value Added Tax in the UK. I would think that 99.9% of users can't reclaim this VAT on a new camera. This isn't the case with the a7 and a7r. Part of this could be to do with the rapid model updates that, like Nikon, increase the depreciation on the models that have been replaced, though even so Nikons hold up pretty well.

Whether this will change in time I don't know, but I do find that generally most people believe that harnessing of simple physics to allow them to optically look through their camera's lens is more desireable than doing it electronically. And hey ! Why not have a device where you don't even need the camera switched on to look through it.

Exactly! I just found out yesterday that instead of going through the arduous process of finding a spot with no light pollution where I could get the stars to line up with something interesting in the foreground I can do a screen grab from Stellarium Software, put it on one layer and any old contrejour shot of an Architectural Thing or whatever on another layer and save myself a lot of time to play games or watch videos. In fact, once we are at it, most photogenic subjects have already been photographed by much better professionals than I will ever be so what the hell...

Gura Gear Sued Peak Design for Element of Everyday Messenger Bag

HTML:
Even in the camera bag game, there are patent infringement lawsuits. Gura Gear sued Peak Design in September of 2015 for an element of the Peak Design Everyday Messenger, a hugely successful Kickstarter camera bag campaign backed by Trey Ratcliff. It looks like the infrindging patent came from Gura Gear’s acquisition of Tamrac’s assets, including intellectual property.</p>
<p><strong>The Complaint:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>A container for facilitating rapid access to the interior of the container to remove articles from the container, comprising: a. a generally rectangular body having a base, two end walls and two sidewalls respectively interconnected at their adjacent edges to adjacent edges of the two end walls, the walls extending upwardly from the base to form the body with a top opening; b. a side closure flap attached to a respective one of said two sidewalls and secured against the respective one of said two sidewalls by fastener means, the side closure flap adapted to span over and covering said top opening of said body and forming a top when the side closure flap is in a closed position; and c. said top of said side closure flap having full length double zipper means for opening or closing said top to gain access to the interior of said body; d. whereby the interior of said body of said container is accessed by either flipping over said side closure flap to an open position or unzipping said double zipper means on said top of said body to access the interior through said top opening of said body of said container.</p></blockquote>
<p>It looks like the suit was settled pretty quickly, at just over a month. With Gura Gear voluntarily dismissing the case, I’m going to assume they won, but it doesn’t say how much of that Kickstarter money was sent over the Tamrac/Gura Gear.</p>
<p>However, with the product still available for preorder on Kickstarter, I imagine Peak Design is licensing the infringing Gura Gear/Tamrac design for the Everyday Messenger.</p>
<p>Aren’t patents fun?</p>
<p>You can view the <a href="https://search.rpxcorp.com/pat/US6206567B1" target="_blank">public records of the suit here</a>.</p>

best bird lens if you pls

Crop vs FF is an important factor. The 7DII focuses on a small subject against a complex background better than the 5DIII, possibly because the small subject occupies more of the sensor.
I've noticed this too. One caveat is that you need to use a small number of focus points (ie no large zone focusing). I use the 4-point diamond on the 7D2.

35mm f/1.4L USM OR 16-35mm f/4L IS USM OR 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM

Thank you neuroanatomist & Random Orbits. I'm going to look in to the 16-35 f/2.8 II instead of the f/4 and then save up and get the 35mm. I think shooting outside if a more of a priority for me over the indoors.
Do any of you own any of these lens?

I agree with some previous posters
16-35mm f/4L IS USM + 35mm f/2 IS USM

16-35mm f/2.8L II is at its best for indoor events, shooting people. The 16-35 f/4L IS is significantly better for outdoors with its sharper corners and easier use of slow shutter speeds. But the 35 f/2 IS is much better than the 16-35mm f/2.8L II indoors as it is sharper, better bokeh and a stop faster; plus the 35 f/2 IS arguably has superior bokeh than the 35L too since the 35 IS has curved aperture blades while the 35L has straight blades.

So 16-35 f/4L IS + 35mm f/2 IS = best of both worlds for you.

So i finally purchased the 16-35mm f/4 two weeks ago. Yes, it took a while, but diapers and bills come first.
I looked into the IQ comparison and instead purchasing the 35mm f1.4 i am now looking into buying the 35mm f/2. The image on the f/2 looks crispier and it's on point over the f1.4.

I appreciate all the help. I love to shoot landscape and portraits, so i want to make sure i have the right stuff to do so.
-Best.

Review - Tamron 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

GammyKnee said:
.... One thing is for sure, on both bodies, the full model name of the lens is recognized. When you go into the AFMA screen, you're adjusting the "Tamron SP 45mm F/1.8 Di VC USD F013" not some nameless lens with a 45mm focal length. The same goes for the EXIF; the full model name is stated in there. I've never seen that with a 3rd party lens before (though I've only ever used Sigma). Are older Tamron lenses also recognized, or is this new to the SP series?...

Interestingly, my new Tamron 28-300mm VC PCD also does that, I've noticed although I didn't pay too much attention to the fact earlier.

Elinchrom Skyport Plus HS

I did for a short time, seemed ok, one thing that is frustrating is it has to scan for packs each time you power up, if a pack dissapears for any reason you have to sac again to find it/them, not quite like the STE3RT where as soon as a device is on its ready to go. HS worked well but I had the ELB pack and HS head, second curtain and strobe made also worked as expected, I did note that my WiFi gave it a hard time! Saying that it effects other 2.4Ghz triggers I have to.. Sadly my ELB went pop so has now all gone back :(

6D repair disappointment

matrix95136 said:
I now fully understand the damage even a few drops of sea water can do. I will certainly be very careful in the future.

My disappointment is that canon didn't even try to return the camera remotely to the state it was in when I shipped it. I didn't even need to get it repaired since every thing was working except left move of multi-controller. I had a hiatus in events so I decided to ship the camera for repair.

Mt. Spokane - I couldn't sell it on Ebay because the camera is bricked at this point. It won't even turn on!

PhotographyFirst and rfedesigner - I am inclined to agree that Canon sloppily put the camera together once they determined there was water damage. They might have assumed the customer (me) would agree to purchase a replacement (refurbished or new) so there wasn't any need to diligently put the camera together.

rfedesigner - I like your idea. I will try to record the dissasembly to see if this thesis is correct and make a formal complaint if that is so.

You can certainly sell a dead camera on ebay, and it might bring more than you expect. Just tell the story as you did here. There are many camera repair people who buy damaged cameras either for parts, or to repair and resell.

I would call Canon and tell them of your issue to see what they say. It is possible that it was incorrectly re-assembled, or that additional parts failed.

Have a independent place look at it. I'm sure they can get it working, and if it lives another year or more, you will be ahead. My daughter sent her iPhone thru the clothes washer and it worked for a year before dying.

Canon 135L vs Canon 200L 2.8

I have owned and used every 200mm option Canon has had and also owned the 135 a bunch of times. Never have I seen a bargain like the 200 f2.8 L II. I paid 420 usd for a mint used and it is fantastic. No doubt the most well hidden gem in the Canon lineup.

It's the cheapest "L" I have bought, and certainly the most bang for the buck. Never thought the AF was that good either, it doesn't miss even at fast tracking 12 fps or shooting with sun glaring into the lens.

I recommend it over any 70-200 because of IQ and weight vs price, and I almost always used the 70-200's at 200.

Against the 135 I had more misses with the 135 so the extra stop wasn't always useful. I would rather have a properly focused shot and a stop more noise than a misfocused clean shot .

G3X firmware update to 'fix' poor RAW performance?

Thanks Alan,

I suppose I shouldn't knock it until I've tried it...

I have the 6D and have never been impressed with its jpeg quality. I shoot RAW 100% of the time. But the reality is also that birding is just a hobby and a new one at that and I do wildlife at most once a year and as I have the new M3 maybe that's a good place to start...

Michael Reichmann raved about the image quality of the G3X and its appeal for me would be the extraordinary reach, compact size and the fact that I already have a EVF...so maybe I should give it a try..

Review - Canon EOS M3 Camera

Tinky said:
Not offended, just felt it sullied a good review. It's the kind of thing I would expect from somebody like Jeremy Clarkson.

The remark was spot on. Canon is not givi g mirrorless anywhere near the attention it deserves. They are withholding good stuff from their clients. Nice customers like me just vritizice canon, while others just bsell their canon sh*t and buy a proper mirrorless sytem from fuji or sony. If canon does not want to play mirrorless, they shall go down with their mirrorslappers and i will laugh watching them fail.

SL2 to be or not to be?

Maximilian said:
IMHO get the SL1/100D now for a great price if you can live with the features and upgrade as soon as a potentional successor comes down with the price. That'll take a least 4 to 6 month after sales release.
And I don't see anything like that before the big FF game started (1 DX II).

Take pictures now and not maybe tomorrow with future gear ;)

Edit: I have it, love it, can live with its limitations.

Already bought the SL1 for my wife a few months back, doesn't mean I don't want to upgrade because of the gearhead in me :p

5DS/R pricing and landscape use

scyrene said:
You can get the 5Ds and -r for £1900-2000 in the UK already (RRP £2999 and 3199 respectively). I doubt it'll drop much more than that. I guess these are grey market imports - it's still up around RRP otherwise. The 5D3 never dropped much at standard retailers.

yes they are, but factor in the warranty you get from the seller, and as long as they are still in business at the end of the warranty you are still quids in. Alternatively, buy a 3rd party warranty and it still won't cost you £1000...

For the USA, would suggest this site

http://www.canonpricewatch.com/product/05701/Canon-EOS-5Ds-price.html

or http://www.photoprice.ca/product/05701/Canon-EOS-5Ds-price.html - even though it is Canadian it has US prices and sometimes history

Alternatively, use Camel within Amazon which will track historic prices and alert based on a threshold.

I'm still curious if Canon would do an updated version in 2017 in a 1xx body with an enhanced sensor, but all my purchases are on hold until I see what Canon release in early 2016. A grey import version of the 5Ds either through the US or here in the UK is certainly a possibility if the price stays a 1/3rd lower than the UK retail prices.
