Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Achieves Best Canon Sensor Score at DXO

ritholtz said:
Thanks Jrista. 1DX is the first camera body with iTR. Then they went cold on this feature until 7d2. Nikon is pushing this functionality aggressively into lower end models. Canon skipped this in 80d.

Sure. My point is, iTR is not something newfangled and innovative...Nikon had the same technology years before Canon implemented it into the 1D X. The 1D X was just the first time that Canon ever employed something similar, where full scene information from a color metering sensor was used to help the AF system.

EOS 6D Mark II & New DSLR Body in 2017

But a purpose built video camera has zero need for a mirror. On the other hand a purpose built video camera would have great live view framing, and thus be fully capable of producing stills.

A mirror seems antithetical to being designed specifically for video (unless of course the mirror funnels light to the sensor rather than away from it :P). Without one, the reduced volume could be used for any number of things...improved cooling, internal storage, etc.

That is true. That's why Canon ''video'' cameras are all mirrorless. XC10,XC20,C100,C100II,C300,C300II,C500,C700 and their small chip camcorders too. All rely in EVFs and/or LCDs.

But, the combination that's made when you put great video ability with a FULLY capable stills camera is a killer one. A 5D + cinema grade 4K and features would be just what we want. That combination of a fully fledged FF camera with an OVF and a cinema camera, are what still makes the 5D so popular and the defacto standard even when so many only-video-mirrorless options are out there.

Gotcha, fair enough.

The Best of Photokina 2016, and a Few Things That Make You Go Hmmmm

Craig: you started the thread: Yes it was a pity not to meet you at Photokina.

I did a fairly good summary here: http://bit.ly/2cRFsF3

In terms of Canon: the M5 was just great. This is a very good answer and for me this camera seems to be much better than the Sony a6xxx ones. But still not on the level of the panasonics. But it is a different ecosystem. Let´s hope for many more and unique lenses to support this format!

Initial thoughts on the 5D4 after some use

My first day with the Mark IV in daylight was quite pleasing.
Right off the bat, I could see the DR improvement, but the biggest surprise was the lack of blown out highlights.
Despite direct sun on the white paint, the exposure was perfect. Normally I would have to have done some manual exposure comp for the whites and lose the shadow detail.

This is a jpg and shot before we got the raw capability in Lightroom.

Picked up 5DS R - specialist tool. How about everyday?

To the original poster, yes I agree with you. It's a very specific tool and it's need was pushed by a very vocal niche in photography....the pixel junkies. The 5D3 was and is a very versatile tool. There is very little that it cant do amazingly well. I've shot wild life with it...action...along side photographers with 1DX cameras and our results were great. Sure the 1Dx users get a lot more images to wade through, but with careful and keen timing the 6fps has always delivered for me. The lower resolution of the 1Dx is a bit too low for my likes, I like around 24mp ideally. I've printed A1+ sized images from my 5D3 (landscapes using a stable tripod and good technique) and I've never found them to be lacking...In fact they are very impressive. I've found that the vocal group of MP trolls are usually more concerned about bragging rights in the Canon vs Nikon forum wars than actually about any practical photographic advantage. I think it's amazing that a 50mp 5fps camera even exists. It's the stuff of fantasy 10 years ago. But it's not a photographic Nirvana, it's an ultra high resolution camera with all the benefits and pitfalls which that particular specification brings.

As to the need for newer lenses for the 5DSR...that may be true wide open, but stopped down, many lesser lenses are more than capable.

Question on digital lens optimization on 5DIV

Canon answered my question, I wrote to them 14 days ago, on this topic: They say, it is better to switch this feature on in the camera, than doing this in the software afterwards. Seems, that there is an slight IQ improvement by activating the function in the camera. Then the sensor behavior will be different.
There will be an Winston video (?) coming, also an small pocket guide how to use AF and all the other IQ improvement features. But they do not know whne. Maybe in the middle of 2017

Canon medium format...

Hi guys, Just for fun ;)
Let's say tomorrow Canon releases medium format in DSLR and mirrorless, would you:
1. Jump on it and sell your current FF or crop gear
2. Add to your current FF or crop gear
Big questions: why? or Why not?

No. Canon should not mess around with MF, just go ahead and launch a kick-ass mirrorless FF system. I would sell my FF mirrorslapper camera, keep my EF L glass, use it with an adapter and buy some nice and small new native pancake primes in order to go small with a small FF MILC.

MF is really only needed for less than 1% of all photographic tasks. MF is a market segment with no lack of established players who are slugging it out. Nobody is waiting for additional players. Fuji will learn it the hard way, they will loose a ton of money on their GFX. And I bet, Leica has not and will never recoup the S2 system development cost and resources wasted on it.

It is really absurd, how ALL camera makers except Sony stubbornly refuse to make the product needed for the largest future market segment: mirrorless FF system. Instead they choose to make action cams in 2016 (stupid Nikon), new MF systems in 2016 (stupid Fuji, stupid Ricoh/Pentax), or only dwarf-sensor mirrorless (stupid Oly, stupid Fuji, stupid Canon, stupid Nikon). It will be a future business case in all business schools on "how an entire industry f*cked up".

Not Fuji, but very similar:
http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/hasselblad-sold-x1d-cameras-10-days-expected-sell-year/

2cents: If Fuji can keep the body around $7-8K, I think they will be fine. We don't have to carry f1.4 prime all the time. However, not having one when needed is really "f*cked up"

and only 1 unboxing on youtube .Worst unboxing ever made .

5D MK 4 photos compared to MK3

Comparing this angle the 5DmkIV looks broken and mushy compared to 6D???
Why would anyone want soft washed out JPG:s?

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=canon_eos5dmkiv&attr13_1=canon_eos5dmkiii&attr13_2=canon_eos6d&attr13_3=canon_eos5dsr&attr15_0=jpeg&attr15_1=jpeg&attr15_2=jpeg&attr15_3=jpeg&attr16_0=100&attr16_1=100&attr16_2=100&attr16_3=100&attr171_3=off&normalization=full&widget=1&x=-0.8673616103522646&y=0.1482832749002481

It's the larger output size; 30 mp generates a greater enlarged image than 20. If you look at the 5Ds that is even "worse". If you reduced the 30 mp file to 20 it would look sharper than the 20, until you sharpen the 20....then you can sharpen the reduced 30. The larger file can resolve more but you lose most of it when you reduce.......so it goes on.

Appreciated Simple Request from 5DIV Owners

The image I see is very very encouraging. Looks identical to the 1DXII and 1DC.

The terms resolution and sharpness are commonly confused. The 4K image I see here is incredibly detailed,

BUT does not have any edge enhancement, sharpening, it is indeed soft.

Try and apply a sharpening filter in your video editor and you'll see that Sony/Panasonic 4K POP that you're after.

If you grade Red 6K files or Arri 2.8k files they are very soft. Canon takes the same approach. Which gives it a widely common misconception of being less that 4K.

Of course when you downscale it, sharpen it, it has 100% 1080p lines of resolution. Just like the C100, which also takes a 4K image and downscales it to 1080p.

I am quite sure your observations are about sharpness settings in the C100. Out of the box the C100 does have quite high sharpness setting (a good sharpening algorithm) and straight of the box the 5D has a high sharpnss setting (bad algorithm). If you shoot both at at zero sharpness (how they should be shot to get highest aliasing performance) you'll get the same C100 crispiness.

The C100 has 12 stops of DR, this is like all Canon Neutral PS, about 10. This is due to c-log. This makes the C100 a better HD camera while the 5D does 4K and slowmotion and of course 30mp stills.

Any more 4K grabs are reaaaally appreciated.

500Mbps MJPEG won't help much, hope Canon can release a 800Mbps codec for better details.

Is Canon at Photokina?

Yes Canon is there with the largest exhibition area. It is not crowded as one might expect. Of course M5 and 5d MkIV are well visited. I was now five days at the photokina and it seamed to me, that all the knew cameras at all manufacturers were t big hit. It was different today on Saturday with more non professional visitors.
I would say going to photokina only because of new allready known bodies and lenses makes no sense.
You will need about one day to look at all the exhibitions. You will need at least another day to be at the main events with all the photographers but be aware that most of them are talking in German.
For me very interesting were the new developments on studio and outdoor flashes. Another part of the exhibition you should not miss is everything about printing. Looking and feeling all the fine art papers and talking about there possibilities is worth a whole day, even if you never printed really good pictures at home.

It is a pity that Canon Europe decided to show no Beamer.

These are a view impressions from myself.

Problems using CF Cards on 5Dmk4: Solved

Re: Problems using CF Cards on 5Dmk4: Solved!!!!!!!

Well thank goodness for that, the Card reader itself has broken.

I dug out an old card reader and that works with both CF cards perfectly.

So even the warning about always formatting the card in the Camera you will use
it in can be ignored, in some cases! I think that is a must when exFat and Fat32
support is involved

Skukuza Rest Camp in Kruger park

I'm really glad I took out a policy, my 24-105 and 70-200 were both damaged by the rough handling of a stewardess on the flight on the way home.
The 70-200 lens cap popped off and the lens was scratched, the 24-105 was put under such pressure that the zoom ring is out of alignment and it is very difficult to turn the zoom, I've never seen this type of damage before!!
However, the trip was incredible and I hope you like the images

Canon C100II and useless power adapter

C4userguy said:
I don't get this post. You want to AC-power the C100/2 during an entire shoot? I've used in-built batteries for years now and I can get through a whole play or a soccer game, etc..
Yeah, I’m shooting whole day events (8+ hrs.) and don’t like to hassle with the batteries. Camera came with the power adapter, so it’s there to be used!

C4userguy said:
What is wrong with packing an extension cord? Really now, no need to bash the C100 for something of this nature.
Common power extension cord won’t fix the problem that I have. And I haven’t found extension cord for the other end.

weixing said:
Hi, A very easy solution is to just cable tie the power adapter on the tripod leg, so that it won't hang on the power plug. Have a nice day.
If that's the solution then the camera should came with zip ties included.

I’m just so baffled about this design. In what kind of situations is this power adapter intended to be used? It can’t recharge the batteries and can’t be used in run-and-gun situation. I believe that my case (shooting on tripod) is just the intended place to use power adapter.
