5D MK 3 Corrupted Video Files?

Can anyone here provide some help to recover lost movies from a Sandisk 8GB CF (Canon 7D)?
I've tried PhotoRec and MiniTool to no avail.
It is the first time I face a full memory card with almost 0% of success (only 4 picture miniatures and a .swf file were found).
The card has been accidentally formatted while still in the camera.
Thank you very much.
Max.

Underwaterphotography

FEBS said:
I hope to get some feedback from you guys/girls concerning underwater photography. The do's and don'ts. Also interesting ebooks, books or internet sites. Every information is welcome.

Thanks,
François

Wetpixel.com is a great site. I have used both your listed lenses for underwater photography. 16mm is a bit challenging without a very large sized dome - I use the Seacam 9-inch superdome with the 16-35 and since last Autumn the Sea&Sea underwater correction lens as well.

I typically do a some UW photography while snorkeling on trips to Hawaii - shots on my web site at high ISO and shutter speeds that are faster than synch speed (1/250) are done this way. As well I do a lot of available light (no strobe) underwater shots in streams at home in Alaska, also at high to very high ISO. I am just back from a road trip last night and many of the shots taken on it (of Chinook Salmon) were at ISO12800 since it was cloudy most of the time.

IDX MKII Question

Greatland said:
I guess I am trying to figure out why I would use it. I don't hear or read anyone talking about using it. Thanks for your response. This is one helluva camera and while I loved my 1DX and my MK IV this camera does seem to be a marked improvement. Since I have only been on one trip since getting it I am still trying to figure out all of the things that it does that are an improvement over my 1DX....The higher ISO range is amazing and the video, which I have started to shoot has extraordinary quality.....lots to learn about this camera though!

If you don't mind, share your insights as things get cleared up since I'm planning to buy and never owned a 1DX although I had a 1D4 for about 3 months and really liked it. I doubt that I had optimal settings on the 1D4 but what I did to familiarize myself was to simply go through every menu item checking out what the options were and what they seemed to accomplish when I changed them. I didn't find the manual to be too thorough at commenting why or in what context a particular setting might be desirable.

Maybe a thread on how to get the most out of your 1DXII might be worth considering??

Costa Rica: 300 2.8 II or 100-400 II

I would bring the 600, 100-400, extender, and a normal-wide zoom (e.g., 24-70 or 16-35). The 300 is optional.

The 100-400 is so much more versatile than the 300/2.8. The nasty bokeh and speed are the price for versatility. I've spent several months in Costa Rica. You will see wildlife up close and at a distance. For example, in Manuel Antonio, small monkeys were cruising all around me within an arm's length. A toucan tree in Tortuguero had over 10 toucans in it, but at a really far distance. It will be humid and warm. You will want to minimize the weight. Also, be prepared for very heavy rain.

Canon W-E1 Wifi Adaptor Confirmed

JonAustin said:
It's interesting to observe how much wailing, moaning, griping, whining and acrimony some rumors can foment. Here's an announcement about an inexpensive little option that promises new capabilities, and from some of the posts, you would think it'll cause those individuals' worlds to literally end.

I'm personally just hoping that it will support the 5D III with remote capability using the EOS Utility. I don't need a lot of range, I just want to be able to control the camera from my laptop without having to be tethered with a USB cable.

If that turns out to be the case, I'll buy two. (I'm almost certain I'll buy a 2nd 5D III after the 5D IV is released.)

I have a similar sentiment. It seems so many can't be happy unless they have something to be unhappy about.

I am always amazed at the inconsistency of photographers in their clamour for wireless flash systems, with many citing the absence of wires as the main benefit and yet they have an irresistible draw to tethered shooting via a fancy USB or ethernet cable!

Canon W-E1 Wifi Accessory to be $40USD

I just wonder what type of limitations will be placed on this for the price?

spare battery limit carry on bag

At least for US carriers, the limit of two spare Li batteries applies only to batteries over 100 Wh. For batteries smaller than 100 Wh, you can carry as many as you want as long as they have their terminals covered and you have them in carry on (not checked). Just for reference, the LP-E4N battery pack for the 1D X is ~27 Wh, so I don't think any dSLR battery would exceed that 100 Wh limit.

Yes, virtually all camera batteries fall into the under 100Wh limit. However, TSA folks are not engineers, and some may have trouble with high school math. If you have a dozen batteries in a bag, I'd expect them to stop you from bringing them onboard. If they are cheap ebay batteries, that would be a good thing.

Don't make it obvious. Place batteries in different areas of the bag, so in pockets, some tucked next to lens or camera bodies.

Beach Vacation in a month... & I'm scared for my gear.

Back from a week at a beach with the little ones. Most used the 5diii and 24-70 (and never changed lenses when out and about) but when I know we would be potentially getting wet, used the D10 P&S. The JPEGs out of the D10 certainly don't compare to the RAW out of the DSLR, but most were acceptable. So, getting wet was not a problem.

would a 16mp 5D MklV be a good idea?

Just like my once fabulous 1D MkIV (16.1 MP)...

The only benefit for me with a 16 MP 5DIV would be stunning high iso performance. But that's far from being the whole story. In the unlikely event such a camera was even being considered by Canon, this would be a low volume niche model, much like the 5DsR at the other end of the MP scale.

The 22MP 5DIII has really hit the sweet spot for a majority of photographers across the planet, especially the busy ones. There are the "bigger = better" MP moaners who see the 5DIV as being not worthy of consideration unless it's in the 36MP range, but a far greater number are quietly hoping that Canon have heard the news and won't exceed 24MP. I'd be perfectly happy with a 22MP 5DIV, but 16MP won't be enough for the majority.

I'm not sure what this means fr the future of optics

Metamaterial lenses, at least those using Harvard's "1D" structures, will never revolutionize the imaging optics world. They are based on interference properties and, consequently, have very bad color properties. 2D metamaterial lenses are able to do significantly better color correction, but their transmission becomes poor; on the order of 70-80%.

The technologies most poised to start any sort of revolution are freeform optics for nonrotationally symmetric systems, and gradient index optics for axially symmetric ones. Diffractive Optical Elements may also see increased usage, but remain unpopular.

+1 Need to bump this response as it is mostly correct.

This technology is inherently monochromatic. It will likely make a very fine lens - at one wavelength - a boon to the B&W shooters out there. Can it be made broadband or designed to work at select R, G, & B wavelengths? Probably, but it will certainly lose any advantage it may have had over traditional optics in the process.

It is entirely correct. a 1D structure can be tuned to exactly one wavelength. The structure can be chosen in a way that its harmonic frequencies are at other useful wavelengths, but the overall efficiency will go down. A 2D structure can be tuned for 2 wavelengths, and through tessellation true broadband correction. The downside is monstrous complexity for the optimization algorithm used in the design, but that can be worked on.

How soon should Canon update the 7D Mark II

Some of the members of our local photoclub do own the 7DII, and we recogniced, that there is a wide spread of image quality and AF performance. We took some studio shots and compared the images. And there is really a wide range of quality difference. I was not in luck, mine has an impaired IQ and an unstable AF. Sometime sharp, most times not.... Sent three times to Canon, got three times back with no improvement. Nothing they can do. I should sell m,ine and buy another one. Maybe then I have better luck. :(

So, I would like to see an upgade earlier. But I know this will not happen. The 7DII sells quite well, when I believe the salesnumbers from an bigger store in Germany. So, There is no need to hurry for Canon. Yes, Canon is technologically behind its peers (IQ & DR, AF performance), but the customer semms not to care about that.

Canon can do better. Just look at the 80D, that is in most cases practically better than my 7DII. Some features are less highlighted (e.g. 27 AF points at f8), but the improvement we see n the 80D are definitely not small.

note: I hope the 5DIV will be a game changer, otherwise the A9 will be mine.

I bought my 7D II one year ago online at Cyberport. I always was a little bit unhappy with the image qualtity. The focus was never really spot on and differed on each focus point. Sent it to CPS near Leipzig twice, but it didn't really improve. So last weak I wrote Cyberport that I either want a completely working model or my money back. At first they acted a little bit dumb. But after reminding them about their dutys and sending them the CPS reports they told me to send the camera back. They will check it and then give me my money back.
If I would sell it, I would get about 600€ less than I paid for it and somehow I don't agree with that. Hope it works out, but I'm not sure if I will buy a 7D II again, because the 5D IV seems pretty close...

Hmm, I hope you get your money back. The shop where I bought it, will not be so customer friendly.
I am not exaggerating. In my local photo club, many of my friends are not happy with the quality fluctuations. Canon CPS can´t do anything against it, because the problems are hardwarerelated - and they do not know, if another e.g. sensor works better. For the price of this camera a high level quality assurance is not possible, otherwise Canon will earn no profits anymore.

But on the other side, some of my friends own an 80D, as an "better" 7DII. And they are quite happy with it. This week we compared pictures from the same heron, parallel taken with exactly the same camera setup and the pictures are visibly much better. Better details, less noise,... My 7DII gets awfully noisy over Iso 400. My friends 80D had an comparable amount of noise at Iso 1600.
Harder it is to compare the AF. So we did some baseline comparison at an shooting range on an sunny day, where we tried to follow the incoming or leaving targets (maximal distance 100m)for 5 cycles each.
Moving directly toward me, my 7DII is not able to deliver sharp pictures. Only less than 10 pictures out of more than 120 are nearly sharp. If the target leaves, the number of sharp pictures gets more than doubled. If the target moves diagonally, the sharp picture rate increases up to one third. But only, if you use maximal the one point - AF surrounded by 8 or nine points. Zone AF and using all points do not work properly. The same situation occurs at other 7DIIs. Interestingly, the 80D and the 5DIII works much better, also the 1DX (that has an excellent AF system). The few 5DS our members own have the same problems with the AF. The 80D´s AF works quite fine. Yes, lower fps, but double the number of sharp and noiseless shots. So, what would you like better?
(BTW: The D500 and D750have an excellent AF system, also - interestingly the 7RII mounted on an 70-400m sony lens)

I like the crop, as I get crop small birds better. (I know, most dedicated wild life shooter will shake their heads. For them the 5DIII is lowest baseline.)

You know, why I am a friend of an 7DII replacement and hoping for an strong successor of the 5DIII. (Hope is the last to die! I fear the 5DIV gets just an small update)

Canon pro 100

I don't print often, but print multiple images when I do - it seems each time I hit print, it seems to "print one" empty, then pulls the paper in, then cycles again, then prints. And the cycle sounds like its either printing without paper or cycling the clean phase again ...

Altho', when it is actually out of paper, it won't print, it stops. But when the paper is loaded, it's almost like it 'ghost' prints one, then actually prints one.

One big happy family?

Then why hasn't someone filed for divorce?

There have been a number of filings for divorce, they just haven't been granted yet - dilbert ;)

Ohh, can you imagine if the divorce were for real? Ahh, the JPEGs were such a nice couple....I hear she got to keep all the megapixels and he was left with just 4 stops of DR.

There's bound to be a greedy lawyer taking notes about this.
