EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM

My new EF-M 28mm Macro lens arrived this week, a fun little toy. Focus on my M2 seems reasonably fast (a bit faster than the 22/2). Just grabbed a few shots last night at 1:1.

The integrated lights are a great idea, and with the two separate continuous LED lights, the power can be varied independently – the single button cycles them together through high, low and off, and with a long press, through left high/low, right high/low. FWIW, at 1:1 distance the high setting delivers about 8 EV of light, and the low setting is ~1 EV dimmer.

The shots below are:

1. Ambient lighting (2700 K LED), 30 s, f/11, ISO 400 (WB set to Tungsten during RAW conversion)
2. Lens LED on high, 1.6 s, f/11, ISO 400 (WB set to Flash during RAW conversion)
3. Lens LED on low, 5 s, f/11, ISO 400 (WB set to Flash during RAW conversion)

There's no good way this type of shot could have been done handheld in that ambient lighting, but with the built-in lights and assuming a ~3-stop IS, I'd only have needed two more stops of light to handhold (e.g. ISO 1600, which will yield decent results with DxO Prime NR).

I'll get out and do some 'real' shooting with the lens soon...

What to do with older 60D body

ronaldbyram said:
Should I sell or repurposed it?
Take a look what you can get for it. A body two generations old normally won't sell very well.

verysimplejason said:
Suggestions:

1. Sell it to finance any lens or practically anything you want. (If I got one, I'd trade it for a very good mountain bike. ;) )
2. Convert it for IR photography.
3. Give it or sell it cheap to somebody you know who's really interested with photography.
4. Sell it together with your 70D and get a 6D. For all its flaws, a 6D is still one of the best low-light/landscape/portrait cameras. This way you've got two cameras that can be a back up of each other and yet can be utilized on different photographic situations.
Quite good suggestions.
But when I look at reseller pages here in Germany I can see that you might get 300 € if it was in absolute prefect (!) condition.
So, Jason, what good part of a good mountain bike could you get for that? ;)

So from these suggestions I'd go for #2 if I were interested in IR (which I am not, yet).
Or I'd choose #3, or #4 depending on what you could get for your old bodies.

7D mark II corrupt files on SD card

wvr1970 said:
I've also problems with corrupted RAW-images.
Sometimes (rarely) it appears.
The only CF card (which I used most) which giving troubles is the Lexar 32GB 800x UDMA7.
I have replaced it by a new one (garanty) but the problems still remain. Recently my camera was send back for repair, but the problems will still remain, even with a new mainboard.

I've tried al solutions mentioned above, but none helps.

My opinion is that this specific Lexar card won't work correct with the 7D mkII.
Just my two cents...

Wouter

My Lexar 64gb 800x has had two corrupt raw files since I bought it. But that is 2 out of about 20,000 clicks so I'm really not complaining. I don't think it's worth replacing the card because of two files.

I almost forgot to add. The two files looked exactly like the one posted.

Pay Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain - Roger Cicala

I can certainly emphasize with Roger in respect to the difficulties of testing consumer products. In my case I have tested ham radio transceivers for 40 years. As product improves over time, the testing equipment and procedures have to improve. Any bias has to be eliminated as much as is humanly possible. No payments can ever be accepted, nor free or discounted product. Mistakes happen, and must be corrected and publicized. Ethics and credibility are all you have since the testing is free, and it is a hobby. At some point someone will say you "sold out" due to a good review. In the end, it is rewarding to give back to the hobby, whatever kind of product is being evaluated. Whenever someone posts one of Roger's articles, I always read them and forward them on to my photography friends. Thank you for all the hours spent to give us your insight.

100-400 II with 1.4x Extender 6D Liveview Autofocus

degies said:
I have a 100-400 ii and use my 2xiii extender on it and it works just fine although autofocus speed does take a hit. IQ is just fine, but at that length image blur is an issue so handholding is out. I find even tripods with gimbals is just not enough. I try and find a spot to rest the lens using a sandbag.
I have been thinking to get the 1.4 purely because of this. However I see they list it as a extender or a teleconverter.I do not quite understand the technical difference ?

Seems like I'm the champ of reviving old threads this week, but I wanted to chime in that I have the same experience. 6D+2x or 1.4x and 100-400 (in my case its the Mk 1).
I came to this forum looking for advice a long time ago, so I thought I would pass along any and all I can possibly give back. I found this thread by searching to see if the mk 2 lens performed notably any better. My Mk1 is pretty sharp, so from what I've gathered, I won't see much of an improvement in that regard, maybe focusing is faster and the IS is better... the corners might even be marginally sharper, but for $2k, I'll keep saving for the 300 f2.8.

My technique to make this combo more successful (and with many other long lenses actually): manually focus to approximately the right amount to get a sharp image, then intentionally back focus it (for newcomers, what I'm describing is to de-focus the lens by focusing slightly behind whatever your subject is), then using back button focus (search google or this forum for more info), the live view will lock focus just fine in decent daylight. In a pinch, it makes for a decent 750mm-ish lens (it's not actually 400mm on the long end if you're new to the 100-400). IQ is good enough to see the veins in leaves or the subtle edges of flowers from at least 25ft or more away (the length of my side yard) and I'm not seeing any crazy fringing etc -certainly not to any extent that couldn't be corrected in post processing. Is it going to nab a bird in flight, probably not unless you're very lucky, or have tremendous manual focusing skill and steady hand holding ability. The live view screen view will take a major brightness hit if you try to shoot into the shade though, just FYI. at f11, not much light is coming through. On the 6D, the camera body compensates and brightens the image for you when you press the back-button for focus start which can aid in getting alignment/framing right. Not sure about functionality on other body models as my other one is out of commission.

Does it work as noted above though, absolutely, it does. Is it as crisp and fast to focus as a 600mm prime - no way... is it terrible, not at all - especially if hiking or backcountry is a possibility for you.

I think it's useful info to have on this site besides the foaming at the mouth over this or that... Some of us might actually attempt to use something like this if we know it might work and threads like this are helpful to identify specific combinations of equipment that are working for people.

I will try to remember to post some sample photos showing the IQ achieved with my setup later tonight (provided we don't get any more severe weather today - this year has been a real crazy one for us in MN).

Moose on the Loose

Re: Moose on the Loose - Again

A little History that we have learned about our Local Moose. He and his sister were born in a neighbors field in the spring of 2015. The mother disappeared, so the brother and sister spent the winter fending for themselves. They made the rounds of the neighbors for several miles around foraging for food. They eat twigs and branches.

Tonight, the male was back, and eating branches from our plum trees, in our field about 300 ft from the house and two fences away. When he saw us come out on our back deck, he decided to leave. I had my 5D MK III with 100-400mm L, but it was far to short at that distance, and autofocus wanted to focus on the fence.

There was only a few seconds to take a few shots, and none were very good, but, you can see that he is growing antlers now.

EDW_3880-XL.jpg

It was about 7:15 PM local time, and a cool day, but even still, he walked between our bee hives and likely made them pretty angry. He had to go past them to get out, since he came into the field thru a gate, and we have 9 foot fences around it. He did not really want to do that, but finally braved it and went out.

1DX ll Charger and Batteries not for Explorer

Canada has electricity..there are also 12V converters widely available so that you can plug in your charger.

Yes most auto parts stores, even walmart, carry 12v to 110v converters for a fraction of the cost of a new battery. I have a 400w model that i got for about 30.00. I also use it to power my sump well pump for those emergencies.

Getting sharp pictures with 7DII - need advice please

AlanF said:
For amusement, the Sigma at 840mm with the 1.4xTC and f/9 (it still AFs). You get an extra 15% of resolution, hardly worth it, but the quality is good.

I checked again using these charts whether IS lowers IQ. IS actually increased the resolution of my 100-400mm II on the the 5DS R. The 150-600mm set at the standard OS (Sigma's IS) has lower resolution but "Dynamic" IS retains IQ.

IS can help with mirror slap even on a tripod. I recall an article that tested several new models on a tripod at various shutter speeds with and without IS and in different drive modes including silent mode. The point was to show that IS and silent mode can help reduce camera movement due to mirror and shutter slap. But the interesting thing about the test is that it showed how much of an impact it can have on the resulting image even at moderate shutter speeds.

Second hand body dilemma - 6D or 5D3

Michael Clark said:
Don't forget that the 17-40 on a FF body will give you the same FoV as a 11-25 would on your crop bodies. The 17-55, as a crop only lens, is equivalent to 27-88 on FF. You do give up the f/2.8, but the larger sensor lets you get away with higher ISO.

That's the bit I am thinking about. When I travelled in Himalayas and Australasia, I was shooting slide film with a 28mm as my widest lens (24mm was an expensive luxury back then!) and when looking back at those slides, not once have I thought 'I wish I had had a wider lens'. And the gap 40-70 does seem a bit large...
Thank you for your comments, Michael.

If you're going to solicit votes, why not just offer to pay for them.
Every bit as tacky.

+1

It beats me why people would vote for someone they didn't know in a competition just because they were asked?

Because there is a shortage of 'nice' in the world today? Why not?

Because it is not 'nice' to the others who are not pushy.

That was pushy? You might get called thin skinned for that.

By a pachyderm maybe.

Fuji Medium Format is coming

I wonder how well the enthusiast market would take a Fuji MF ML camera. Would they understand that a "slower" lens aperture is actually not so slow when total light gathering and DOF of the larger sensor are taken into account?

Seems like there are many photographers out there who think a f2.8 lens on a micro 4/3 sensor is fast and "pro", yet and f4 lens on a FF sensor is slow and amateurish. ;D

Even many experienced photographers fall for the same logic trap.

My guess is much smaller market due to price and native lens selection.

I'm keeping my eyes on this MF mirrorless market(hasseblad x1d) and rumor Fuji. Some f2 primes at starting point would be nice :)

To be honest. I have never owned or even used a MF camera (Polaroid counts as MF though doesn't it? ;)). If I had money burning my pocket, I would get one for $2K just to play with a MF camera.

On the other hand though, I've been going backwards in time and technology with my gear. 5D to 6D to 60D to a Rebel T1i I now use. LoL

Yeah, basically a modern-day Luddite. ;)

As long as you enjoying your photos, there is nothing with that ;)

I never own MF either. Would love to get the feel of it in near future.

Boycott, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Rather than just look for a reason where "dilbert is wrong"

Really, no one ever needs to look. ::)
Then why waste hundreds of posts arguing?? :o

Late to this thread and just skimming. I really wonder this myself. I can only surmise it's that persistence will finally eliminate the "problem". With my crystal ball I'll venture that it won't.

I might add that for the most part I don't enjoy reading what Dilbert posts and so I just skip his comments, consistently. I have no animosity towards anyone on CR including Dilbert but I now ignore him. I'm sure Dilbert doesn't mind if I ignore him and he's free to ignore me. Win-win. :)

unfocused, hit the nail on the head with his thorough assessment IMHO.

I vote against pointless bickering but sometimes it's hard to control one's self, especially when the topic is gear that competes with Canon! OTOH, sometimes the bickering (excluding pointless putdowns) can be pretty humourous!! ;)

Fujifilm Unveils the New X-T2, the Ultimate Mirrorless Camera with New Autofocus System and 4K Video

Re: Fujifilm Unveils the New X-T2, the Ultimate Mirrorless Camera with New Autofocus System and 4K V

luminaeus said:
I've been a long time lurker here. Checking the rumors and reading the forum drama while drinking my morning coffee has been a routine for a few years now. I also took advantage of the grey market deals that were posted here to get a 5D Mark III and a few L lenses to go with it. I have thoroughly enjoyed using Canon's best body and lenses and have a library of over 40k photos in Lightroom to prove it. But, my time with Canon is coming to an end because Fuji just made the camera I've always wanted.

I have always said that if I ever were to go mirrorless, I would go with Fuji. Great sensor, beautiful lenses, and those film simulations are gorgeous. The only thing that was holding me back was autofocus performance and that looks to be solved with the X-T2. I'm not a video guy but I might get into it because that oversampled 4K with in-camera grading looks amazing as well.

So, I'm selling off my 5D Mark III and all my big L lenses and replacing it with an X-T2, 16mm f/1.4, 23mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.2, plus a pile of batteries and that battery grip. I'll let you guys know how I like it when it's finally shipped late August or early September.

I changed completely last year to a X-T1 and don't miss that much the Canon - except for operational speed in switching on -> focus -> shoot. And of course battery life. The X-T2 at least has an accurate battery level indicator, the X-T1's is ridiculous (dies abruptly).

Step up ring and hood for 50mm 1.2, does it fit?

I can remember things that happened years ago very well, but I couldn't review the last week with you and sometimes don't remember who I talked to just hours before. Having lots of trouble learning new things too. Docs in this one dog town don't seem to take the forgetfulness seriously. Nobody will refer me to a neurologist. Did the clock test and all that.

Memory problems...a colleague of mine at the Mass General Hosp memory clinic once saw a patient who was an MIT math professor and his chief complaint was that he could no longer derive equations in his head. Passed every standard memory test with flying colors, 5 years later he was failing them and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Fortunately, you're young for that...even the familial forms (except for Down syndrome).

Ouch. I have been worried things are headed that way.

1DXII Showcases ef 50mm 1.4!

So, is this promo shot (see link) of the 1DXII with 50mm 1.4 on the Canon Store website a way of Canon reminding us that the 1.4 is its most wildly underrated lens? Or do they just look good together?

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/dslr/eos-1d-x-mark-ii

I only see the f/1.2

Thanks! My mistake. In the current issue of PPA Magazine, the 1DXII is featured as a hot new item for 2016, and in that shot it does have the 50mm 1.4 attached. Not wearing glasses, I saw this shot in the Canon Store and thought it was the same. (Unless it changed overnight!) Red ring is clearly there!

Whoops. Never mind.
