I've shot the 35 Art and I constantly used off-center AF points. With that lens, I shot off-center plus-shaped clusters (i.e. '+' pattern of 5 points) or often single AF points given that f/1.4 can be unforgiving to larger AF selection areas.

But I'd give that AF a B. Consistency and speed were quite good but not world class. As an amateur, I had misses, but most of them were from misusing such a wide aperture on relatively close subjects and not due to the AF.

But I can't speak for the 24 Art. I've never shot it.

I do documentary work and I'm using a 5D3 system for low light / shallow DOF and a Sony PXW-X70 for general purpose / fast response. The 70D is really good bang for buck. Paired with the 18-135 IS STM, it's a pretty good system with dual pixel AF. As long as you're ok with dual sound (when needed), this is not a terrible decision by any means.

70D has the only AF system that can reliably focus on a face unattended during video. This is very helpful when doing interviews without a crew. Also I have 8 Canon lenses that are immediately useful on a 70D. Switching systems is a big deal, but I can probably add a 70D on sale for less than $800.

Which explains why everyone uses a 70D to shoot video......oh wait....they don't....in fact almost no one uses it. Except those who bought it as a stills camera and don't see a need for getting a capable video camera on the assumption that whatever they have is good enough.

They actually do, many video professionals use the 70D. I mean MANY. It's because of the Canon video DSLR reputation (60D successor) and because it's the only large sensor video camera with usable AF, that's until the 7D mkII came out (which has no aliasing, better lowlight, but removes the touch-to-focus and swivle LCD.

Anyway, having the DPAF technology only the 70D (which has bad video quality vs the rest) is a frustrating situation. Give me a good video image with DPAF damn it!

They tried doing that by coupling dpaf with the C100/300 but, they made it only work in a center focus point, 90% useless compared to the real ground-breaking DPAF concept in the MUCH cheaper 70D... Weird isn't it? no, it's Canon

I Agree with the C100 mk II issue. If it had full sensor DPAF, I would buy it for sure. This would give me enormous relief when trying to conduct an interview without a cameraman! People who scoff at AF for video are out to lunch and have never had to work alone, or with a stabilizer rig

I usually list on Craigslist first, but the buyers seem to expect a steep discount. Then, I list on ebay at a fixed price. The fees are lower for fixed price items, but Paypal gets you. You do get more by selling on ebay, so that can be a partial compensation.

Prices on FM tend to be a little lower than ebay prices and you still have to pay a big fee to Paypal.

Selling to a dealer is a last resort, I've never had to do it.

Increased mp never demands greater steadiness. Mp doesn't increase the degree of blur that results from unsteadiness. However, increased enlargement demands greater steadiness. So the question is whether you will be making bigger prints or viewing the images larger.

Only if you are going to view at unequal magnifications, if you view both outputs at the same subject size (which you should) there is no difference.

I bought the 135L primarily for one reason... in door sports. Basketball, some volleyball... stuff like that. Give me an extra stop of light... and I shoot around 1/500th of a second, so IS is irrelevant. If I was shooting at 1/50th of a second... then yes... not the lens for me... but the iso is what it is... and I live with it and fix it in post.

If it had IS, I'd never want for a 70-200mm for slower shutter speeds and I won't part with my 135L for the f/2. It be the ideal tele if it had both for me.

Thanks PBD! I waited long enough on several lists and finally found a copy at the local store in San Diego, George's, yesterday. Took my first shots with it this evening and very impressed. Still, much wider aspect than I'm used to having at my disposal and going to be a learning curve to make the most of it.

be prepared for no or very limited blossoms... I had snow falling on my bike ride today, spring seems to be late this year. As for lenses 24-70mm & 70-200mm would be my suggestion. IMHO DC is best photographed with longer lenses to compress all the boring space in between objects. I almost never take a wide down to the mall anymore.

Having lived here for many years last year was the first year I really went down to photograph the blossoms (over many days) - I could not believe what a mad scene it is, I say this because my humble advice is to pack as light as possible. Of course I'm a tripod person so I always carry one of those.

Just because you're coming from the North don't think it's warm down here to forget some light gloves and warm jacket for the early morning stuff. Plus the monuments are pretty cool (pun in the night time as well. And plan on using the metro, not parking a car near the Tidal Basin.

The optics of the IS unit forms part of the optical design of the lens. For example, the image needs to be moved to compensate for motion without causing a prismatic affect (recall Newton's experiments).

That would be my guess, and I'm not entirely sure how well IS and monopod combine in any case (do you have a IS mode 2 on your lenses?).

The second point you're probably mistaken about is the effect of IS: it generates "ok" pictures vs. bare handheld, but for full sharpness w/o being lucky you need higher shutter speeds or a sturdy tripod. IS always introduces some jitter, and shots are never the same.

It's called one-shot mode for a reason - the focus setting on the lens stays the same when servo is off.

Imho these shots are simply complicated, you best bet is to burst and refocus a few times, then pick the best exposure.

While I have not used either, I have read many times the mk 2 is superior in almost every way.

IMHO, either 2 things are going to happen...

5D4 will come this year without 4K (huge outrage amongst videographers if this happens).
Or
5D4 comes next year or even the year after with 4K.

My reasoning behind number 1, recent price drop of 1DC. No grey market model, straight out of the stable @ $7999 (USD). I don't think they are going to create a separate line that is a Cinema DSLR, going forward.
They will still create Cinema cameras, just not DSLR form factor that is so close to their other EOS cameras.
Going back to price drop, if you look at the Canon 1DC's price history (http://www.canonpricewatch.com/product/03900/Canon-EOS-1D-C-price.html), there is a year where after a price drop it remained constant throughout the year (without any sales). I believe this year its going to remain stable @ $7999 (USD) without any sales too (again, see price history).

I strongly believe that they are going to keep it like this and knowing that if people are waiting for the 5D4 for 4K, they are either going to be upset or they are going to wait.

I am sure that they value their customers, existing and future customers. But I believe that they value current customers more over future ones, because they don't want people to buy something like the 1DC (this year @ $7999) only to be obsolete the next year with the 5D4. People will always think about waiting for the next best thing. But then, you can be waiting forever, not doing anything productive.

They just announced the 5DS/5DSR, only to please the high resolution crowd; they just instilled confidence in Canon fans that they will release future 5D products. Their 5D3 is still selling, what is the hurry to release the 5D4??? People that are waiting can afford to wait, obviously they don't have any real projects on the way, else they would buy our 5D3, right? Or there should be a huge leap in sales in the a7s or gh4, right?

EDITTED TO ADD: If there is either another price drop or another sale (for the 1DC) that happens within the next couple of months, then I would believe that may be they are trying to get rid of inventory and so 5D4 will come with 4K.

Agreed!

This is a game changer for fixed focus cameras. Cell phones, web cams, security cameras (non-zooming), and probably dozens of other functions would be greatly simplified with the simple, uncorrected, lenses that could be used with this.

Even with cameras that zoom, it would mean that not as much correction was needed and lenses could be made a bit simpler...

For the DSLR world, with lenses spanning 100X range, it's a bit of a non-starter as the task would be far more difficult and there is the momentum of legacy optics to overcome.

The magic drain pipe (80-200 L) which I don't own but love the pictures that I had taken with it.
