Shooting a 5DSR in M RAW Vs 5D MK III

Frodo said:
It would be great if more DSLRs used pixel-binning. This is where the signal from four or nine pixels is aggregated into one signal. This increases the effective size of the pixels and reduces noise at a significant cost in resolution. My G10 employed this and produced 1.9 megapixel images. Noise definitely declined at high ISOs but I found that the reduced file size limited the value of this. Now if the 50 megapixel 5DS used pixel binning, that would be exciting! 7MP would be very useable.

Thank you Frodo. I wasn't aware it was called 'Pixel Binning' but you've just described what I was hoping the 5DS would be capable of offering as an option with MRAW, a way of utilising the data gathering power of 50MP but for those occasions when you want a smaller file but still retaining reasonable resolution and low noise.

Having heard from other respondents and read other articles I now realise MRAW is a different beast altogether and doesn't offer what I was after but perhaps Pixel Binning could.

If the 5DS doesn't provide an option as standard, I wonder if the clever folks behind Magic Lantern could find a way!?

Review: Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG Art via LensRentals.com

Got one. Like it alot. Happy to see it is more than competitive with the others. Sure I would love a lens that had perfect MTF charts for both sag & tan at pixel size of the 5Ds, etc at f1.4 - heck while dreaming dream bright, why not f 1.0!

While theoretically possible, look at the price differential of the best 50mm that Roger posted a few weeks ago.

Chasing that next identifiable bit of resolution is a monumental effort in engineering, manufacturing, and I suspect weight as well - which all adds up to yet bigger dollars.

Everything is a compromise, though in this case not so many.

Photoflex Closes Doors

A victim to low cost Chinese Imports. As Chinese products get to be better quality, it going to happen more and more...
The April 1 timing gave me momentary hope. But yes, they're almost certainly a victim of low cost Chinese imports. My Photoflex lighting accessories were such a welcome breath of fresh air in the quality department. They replaced annoying, low cost, easily broken Chinese imports. So with Photoflex gone, I hope the void is filled with better quality imports. They are improving steadily.

6D + 7D Mark II or 5D Mark III

My choice would be the 5D3. I upgraded from the 7D to the 5D3 and it's hard for me to go back to crop. Crop images lack the pop of FF images. FF has better color depth, better DOF control (as in smaller DOF options), better low light performance, and is most often sharper than crop. Many overlook the latter. The "reach" advantage of crop is offset a but by the fact that crop will give softer images than FF with the same lens. Take a look at the link below which compares the 7D2 with the 1Ds3.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=972&Camera=963&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=972&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

I shoot a lot of events and sports (mostly indoor) and prefer to use two bodies -- one with a short zoom and one with a long zoom. For a while, I used the 7D as the second body to the 5D3 and it was frustrating. I wanted every image to be as sharp and as clean as possible. When I switched from a long zoom situation to a short zoom situation, I found that I was swapping lenses between the two bodies. It would have been easier to shoot with a single body.

The 5D3 AF system is extremely good, every bit as good as the 7D. I don't miss the extra 2 FPS of the 7D. However, I do have to be more selective when I burst in RAW because the 5D3 buffer fills up faster. Still, this hasn't been a problem. In low light, I have found tracking sometimes loses focus when the subject lacks contrast. But, playing with the Case settings has resolved much of this.

I'm in a situation where I occasionally challenge the limits of the 5D3 with low light sports -- such as with figure skating. 6 fps (and 8 fps of the 7D) is too slow to rely on. Skaters can rotate 180 degrees between frames. I have to rely on timing, instead. I've been tempted by the 7D2 with hopes that it will track better and the 10 fps may increase the odds of capturing a mid-jump shot with the skater looking in my direction. But, I can't go back to crop for these low light situations. The 7D2 might give me a few extra shots that I'm missing with the 5D3, but every shot will lose the extra pop that I get with the 5D3. My keeper rate with the 5D3 is quite high and I'm not willing to drop down in IQ for the sake of a few extra images.

I understand that the 5D3 still has at least a stop advantage over the 7D2 in noise. I live between ISO 3200 and 6400, so that extra stop is important to me. If you most often shoot below 3200, noise may not be a factor.

For action with more light, perhaps the 7D2 will do fine. It's worth noting that an f2.8 lens on crop has the DOF of an f4.4 lens on FF. So, crop does benefit from this extra wiggle room when tracking moving subjects. It can be off just a tad and subjects will still appear in focus. If the FF body loses focus slightly while tracking, it may be more noticeable. However, when it locks on, the FF body will still have more pop with the smaller DOF and the sharper images.

I must stress that the 5D3 has a fantastic AF system and is an underrated sports body. Personally, I'm in a position to up my game and seriously considered the 7D2 for its advantages with AF tracking and 10 FPS. But, for the reasons stated above, I'd rather stick with full frame. I've decided that the only path up for me is a 1Dx (which is on order, thanks to dropping prices).

Sorry to hear of your loss.

My understanding of the insurance in the U.S. is as follows. If you are a professional photographer such that you have a business (LLC, etc.) that is insured, you can cover your gear under an inland marine floater or such. This type policy also allows you to cover rental equipment used for your business.

If you are a hobbyist like me, you can "list" your equipment as "scheduled personal property" on your homeowners or renters policy, for which you will pay an additional premium (based on so many $ per $100 of equipment value). The value of this listing is that the insurance company will then provide coverage for loss "away from premises". I am not sure about other homeowners insurance policies, but my insurance company will not insure rented equipment.

This may be true for some US insurance companies, but not mine. I have Allstate homeowners insurance and, for a while, I had a separate, scheduled rider for my camera equipment. But, and this is a big BUT, my Allstate rider would not cover me if I became a professional photographer. Since I have started to sell a few photos, I decided I didn't want to have to argue with Allstate over the definition of what is a professional photographer. So I got a policy through Hill and Usher, which provides much better coverage including all of my computer equipment. And best of all, it is not attached to my homeowners insurance. And, you can get coverage with them for your rental gear. It's a very comprehensive policy.

YONGNUO YNE3-RX Receiver for RT system / now available

Got hold of one of the yn-e3-rx receivers a few days ago. Could not test it yet, since i sold all my Canon 580/430EX II speedlites (and bought multiple 600eX-RT). Will try to borrow a 580EX II from a friend, so i can test the combo YN-E3-RX plus 580ex II with 5D3 and 600Ex-rt as well as canon stE3-rt as master.

Will report findings, but won't be very soon, since i am out of town currently.

5Diii Mirror box and AF sensor

So I called. They said they don't give estimates over the phone for a repair. Not sure why since, I am asking for a specific repair. Oh well. They told me to fail out the online repair form and that I would get an estimate before I sent it in for the specific repair. I filled it out. No estimate. I contacted them via email to see if I could get an idea as to what the repair would cost. They responded that they won't give me an estimate unless I send it in. Ugh!

So, I still have no idea how much it will cost. It may be more worth it to just sell it and buy another one. Oh well. Frustrating. If I get it figured out, I'll post the info in case anyone else with the same problem comes along.

Of course I'm scared for the high risk of wallet anorexia :) I mean I have already the 5DS R and the 11-24mm on my radar...
LOL!!! Mine is already thin and weak from the 11-24 f/4... I have found that credit cards are good for fattening up the wallet, but they aren't quite the same as feeding it a high quality diet of cash ;D

You made me laugh ;D

Even if I don't do architectural / landscape photography much I still want that lens :D So now I officially envy you :P
I took a look at your portfolio, so now the envy is mutual!

Pixma MG7150 - not printing some colours

Hi all,
don't know if anyone can help here - we have had said printer for less than 18 months - after 13 months (ie just out of warranty) it started to not print some colours (Magenta, Cyan), as evidenced with a nozzle test print.
I got to recover then with a couple of "Deep Cleans", which seemed to use up half a tank of ink!
It's now gone again, so I'm wondering just how dead this printer is. Have tried another Deep Clean but without any improvement.
I've looked through several of the posts on here about other models of printers, and have ascertained that infrequent use of a printer can cause the tanks/nozzles to dry out, which may be what's happening here, and also that it could be a Good Thing to not turn a printer off, to stop it going through the inordinately long startup/cleaning routines, which could be contributing to the vanishing ink issue.
So.. does anyone know of a way that I can get the printer doing its thang properly again? Is there some ninja cleaning trick that could help out?
We've been using 3rd party ink - is there any evidence to suggest that that might clog/dry any worst than genuine Canon ink?
At wit's end..
Cheers,
Marlon

7d mark II AF calibration issues - Would you send it in?

There is also a factor that the shutter and mirror slap causes some camera movement. This may not be apparent in the 70d due to shutter design.

Just as you noticed one shot seemed to work fine out of the box but servo was not working. Canon replaced the mirror box and AF sensor on my 7d2 and the results now are just a good as with my 5d3.

I can shoot at lower shutter speeds in drive mode but I find I have to keep IS enabled in any mode in order to reduce the effects of shutter and mirror slap. Quiet mode helps in this regard where you don't need 10fps.

How is this possible with this crap Canon sensors/bodies, Sony is soooo much better in every way... ;)

Why haven't you switched - serious question, not a cheap shot. Cost or does canon offer some benefits such as range of lenses that does not?

Or should I read you smily face as a wink?

Yes, I was joking. It was sarcasm.
Seriously, I'm really satisfied with my Canon gear. Not even thinking switching.

Canon EOS 5DS/5DSR shipping earlier than previously expected?

Just noticed some updated language on Adorama's website for the 5DS/5DSR cameras when clicking the "learn more" link under the Pre-Order information.

"Pre Order Now: Manufacturer will start shipping this item on 06/05/2015. Orders will be filled on a first come first serve basis. We do not charge your card until actually ship the item to you."

Thoughts?

PowerShot G17 Mentioned Again [CR2]

I bought the G16 because I think it is the last of a kind - and I just had to have it. Call it a kind of nostalgia or GAS or whatever. It may not be a perfect camera but it does have a unique and classic set of features, one of which is the optical viewfinder, and another is the relatively tiny sensor that definitely has its shortcomings but does allow for a reasonably compact optical package (despite the somewhat more bulky body).

So far I have used it very little to be honest - more due to circumstance and the luxury problem of owning too many good camera's than anything else- but I plan to bring it as a backup camera for an upcoming trip to China. Also I might use it to shoot some travel video on that trip.

Anyway I'm happy I bought it at the time but to be sure it's a bit of a dinosaur and if Canon brings out a G17 with the same sort of general specification and feature set (a G17 would logically follow the evolutionary -rather than revolutionary- development of the G** series), well then I would be *really* surprised.

Hey, wouldn't you folks trim the quotes to what you really wish to answer? It would make reading the posts so much more enjoyable!

For two reasons, first, it maintains context, I hate it when people partial quote and deliberately completely misrepresent what you actually wrote, just like photonius quoting my my partial comment "This is not a fair comparison" then ripping me apart in saying that isn't the point of the website, I know that! But it was the point of the initial linked comparison about which we are talking and that the poster has subsequently agreed is not correct and not a fair comparison. And second, I kinda like to see how far the nesting will go ;D it seems like they go into a black hole of quotes!

Also, I gave up with photonius, I expect most other people can see the error of using those two samples as a comparison of diffraction, all those that don't have their head up their butts and confuse pixel density with enlargement anyway.
