Lenses sharper on FF

candc said:
You might be right, the center is so close its hard to tell the difference. If it's hard to see a difference in 100% crops of test charts then I think its safe to say that you won't see a difference at normal viewing size and distance.

I find that interesting too. That might be because the crop sensor is shorter so you're not really reaching the "corners" of the lens on a crop as you are with the FF. (with a non EF-S lens).

In general I found my EF-S lenses (10-22 and the 17-55 f2.8) on my T4i were incredibly sharp. (I had one picture I took at Disneyworld with the 10-22 from the 2nd floor of the train station looking over mainstreet and towards the castle and with a crowd shot and, unbeknowest to me at the time, there was a show going on at the castle with the princes and princesses and I lucked into a shot where they were perfectly posed as if I had planned it that way. I didn't even know until a relative went to make a large print of it and the printer pointed out how cool the shot was!) (Yeah... yeah... I planned it that way!) But I also find my 16-35 f2.8II ion my 6D to be just as sharp. But I bet if I had taken that shot with the 6D and the 16-35 I could've zoomed in much better onto the stage and gotten a better cropped image then I was able to with the APS-C sensor. (EG, not at all!)

Hands-On Video with the new Sigma 50mm F/1.4 Art

candyman said:
Interesting. I wonder if Sigma would redo their 85mm f/1.4 into an Art version. And, would be curious what will be the size of the 85mm f/1.4 Art

They will, eventually, but the 85-100mm market seems pretty well served. I guess they're trying to attack the segments more in need of modern, hi-end lenses.

Pity because I would like it very much!

70-300mm F/4-5.6L IS or 70-200mm F2.8 VC?

Yup, definitely saw that most reviews placed Tamron right behind Canon and Nikon but before Sigma. Nothing to offend Sigma (since I definitely am waiting for the 24-70mm F2, if it's coming out! Breaking my piggy bank for that!), but Tamron will be the better choice. Canon was on the mind but the price is twice of it. I just want to know how much that gulf between USM and USD would cost me, and seems like you guys are telling me it doesn't justify it. In fact most would say that the IQ of Tamron is equally good, which is almost surprising!

I thing the Matt Granger vid shows examples of the difference between USD and USM.

This vid compares the sounds:

I personally think the Canon is very quick on a 5d3. Although without having both side by side I can't give you a honest opinion comparing the two....

Sony A7/R "Bundle Deal" up to $650 Off

FYI, doing some more research, the RJ Electronics adapter is reported to be well-built with AF as good (maybe more precise?) as Metabones III. It's a bit cheaper at $289.

That is interesting, according to their website, the RJ adapter auto focuses on EF 50 f/1.4 ... coz it does not auto focus on metabones III adapter. Thanks for sharing.

Nikon and Quality Control issues again

Over at nikonrumors, and a few other forums, report problems with water leakage in Nikon 1 AW 1 (underwater mirrorless camera), which was launched on September 19, 2013.

According to one of the customers, digitalrev has cancelled his order of Nikon 1 AW 1 saying that the 1AW1 has been "discontinued by the manufacturer".

Some say it is true, some say it is not true, but the fact remains that it has been in "Back ordered" status with almost all of the biggest authorized sellers (e.g. B&H, Adorama, Amazon etc) for a very long time.

Considering the QC issues Nikon has had, with their SB 900 speedlite & D600 camera, maybe they are trying to nip this in the bud as quietly as they can. Sad really to see a top camera manufacturer losing their reputation like this, due to avoidable mistakes.

"It's taped up so I can't take any pictures with it...", but they don't seem to have any issue with you popping the lens off and possibly attaching it to your body. Seem rather easy to do a quick lens swap and get some sample images that way.

Yeah, but do you really want to encourage someone to betray the trust of Sigma... and if you are caught... then Sigma will certainly black ball you and probably every other company who knows you are a liar. Integrity and one's reputation... take quite a bit to build... takes very little to destroy.

Picked up a new 24mm f1.4L II today

Got one also end of Dec @ B&H w/ $200 rebate. I was considering the Canon or Sigma 35mm, but I'm waiting to see what happens "new" with Canon this year and I do landscape work, so wider was better for me now. Was great price. As with any narrow DOF it is a challange to land focus (I'm driving it with a 5dmkII, so not he best focus stats) but the film is cheap! So if its action indoors sans flash shoot alot, you'll get plenty of keepers. I'm still learning it but very glad I have the speed and width.

f2.8 16-35mmL vs. f4 17-40mmL

Andy_Hodapp said:
So send it to Canon? How long and how much would you guess?

If you've got cps there are max. times depending on cps level ... but since you ask you're probably just a plain ol' Canon customer, so call them, usually they have a very good idea how long a non-cps repair takes.

And ask for the price estimate, it saves you a heart attack later on if you're warned :-o but a decentered lens that shows iq degradation even stopped down doesn't leave you much of a choice.

Move settings from 5DII to a second body?

neuroanatomist said:
Not with anything from Canon, camera or computer software. I believe FoCal can save and restore camera settings, but since it's linked to the serial number, you would have to register the rented camera, and even then I'm not sure if the software would transfer from one camera to another since it can tell them apart.

Thanks Neuro. Kind of what I figured. Surprising really that there aren't any third party tools that do this kind of stuff. Probably something tricky with the internal access/storage to the data?

This is now going to take another half hour or so out of my life...

I want to try a Sony. What to rent? RX1r, A7, or A7r?

I just saw in your signature, that you have the 40mm f/2.8 & 50 f/1.4 lenses ... I too have those lenses and have tried them on Sony a7 with the metabones adapter ... if you like shooting with those primes lenses you may want to also rent the metabones adapter ... they don't take up a lot of space as you can toss them in each of your pant pockets and still have the option of a prime lens readily available to you without too much hassle.
Just need to be aware that the 50 f/1.4 does not auto focus with the metabones adapter, but you can use the focus peaking feature in a7, which is very fast and accurate.
The EF 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens autofocuses very nicely with the metabones adapter.

The Sigma SLR Strategy?

Albi86 said:
I think it would be nice if we started seeing 3rd party camera makers.

Patents for EF and F mounts are long gone. Blackmagic already makes cameras in EF mount.

I would love to have a Sigma camera with a FF Foveon sensor that takes Canon glass.

I would love a Zeiss camera especially designed around ZE/ZF lenses.

For smaller companies that have limited revenues in camera sales, it could be an interesting option.
