Need some advice - Beginner

the kit lens (18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS) is surprisingly good optically, even though it feels like a toy
check out these tests:
http://www.similaar.com/foto/lenstests/lenstestsa.html

plus it's light and it has IS, so it is my go-to lens for the flycam (where I don't have to touch the nasty focusing ring either)

as a 18mm f/3.5 prime for $100 or less, it's a very solid option

Gee. The closest one to me is only 1200 miles away. Why not the Smokey Mountains? :'(

Yea, how about the Sequoia National Forest as well? Or Death Valley? Or Joshua Tree? Or the Mojave? Actually, why not all of the big parks around Southern California? :P Ok, now I'm getting greedy.

Canon EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Information

jsixpack said:
STM is "the thing that isn't USM", right? Like on the c and other super-cheap lenses?

http://photo.net/equipment/canon/lens-motors

Ring Ultrasonic Motor = Fast, silent but quite 'fidgety' focusing with full-time manual focus.

Micro Ultrasonic Motor = Slow, loud focusing, no manual focus in autofocus mode.

STM = Not either of the above.
"So that the STM can also be quiet full-time manual focus, plus ultra-compact, it is a technology looking forward to future developments."

So probably faster focusing that micro USM, and slower and smoother focusing that ring USM.

For me this is a great 'going to the pub' lens. Even the little nifty fifty makes a 5D look too much like a professional camera and starts people getting antsy when you try to take pictures. A slightly wider and really slimline lens is awesome.

5D MkIII review at PDN

I did find a couple of annoying things.

The visibility of the AF points is much poorer than on my 7D, where they are large and easy to see. They light up for about 2 seconds when focus is reached, while the 5D MK III just flickers for a instant. Its a very good low light camera, but it would be nice to see exactly where your focus point is in the darker scenes, and it washes out in bright sun.

It is slow to acquire focus in dark scenes, its very accurate, but can take a few seconds. My MK II did not do that.

Dylan777 said:
Have you ever use this filter before? Im waiting for mine to be arrived from B&H. Can I have your thoughts on this? This filter will be shared between my 16-35 II & 24-70 mrk II.

Thanks, Dylan

I have the 77mm XS-Pro Nano Kaesemann on my 70-200II and it works great. I had it on my 70-200 F4 previously.

5D3 confusing memory card slot cover indicator

Use the Info button.

Are you referring to "Why can't I disable select Info screens in playback mode"?

While in playback mode I want to disable the second histogram screen and the full screen image with basic data. I'd like the info button to toggle between large photo and small photo with information and a single histogram.

This is possible for the info screens in shooting mode (menu "SET UP3", "INFO. button display options").
As I've said, this is just a minor issue but I would've been nice to save 50% of my INFO. button pushing.

It's Not Even April Fools [CR1]

both the EF and F mounts are dynousaurs of the mirror era. both have no future in the inevitable mirrorless world. I'm more interested in a 35mm mirrorless mount.

+1 !

Actually, I would prefer an electrified Leica M-Mount. Patents of the M mount have expired, some time ago, its free for all. Putting electrical contacts on it would enable AF and IS and everything else modern, while retaining backward compatibility with all M mount lenses. :-)

Fake Batteries

Mt Spokane Photography said:
Its been well known you years that almost all new batteries sold on ebay are counterfit, and, its not limited to camera batteries. You are right, don't go there for batteries.

Unfortunately, some dealers have been fooled and bought them to resell. Its best to stick with dealers big enough to buy them direct from the manufacturer.

New Full Frame Camera in Testing [CR1]

Here's how I use my Canons:

5D3 - high ISO event coverage, office shots using Speedlights, mixed lighting, studio portraits, fashion work, product etc

1dsMK2 - Long in the tooth, but such a robust camera - inclement weather out-door shooting, wet and or dirty locations (factories, wood shops etc) or anywhere else where the camera's weather sealing comes into play. It can really take the abuse.

And here's where the 3D would come in really handy - studio product, architectural, and in particular, studio dance or other action photography, allowing to shoot wide to accommodate for subject movement, cropping in and preserving the resolution. Assuming the Canon lenses can handle it..

So as a pro shooter, I could really benefit from a much higher resolution camera and welcome its arrival. The right tool for the job.

cheers.

Wide Angle Lens Recommendations

DaveQ said:
For best IQ, 24mm Prime, otherwise the 16-35, which is really an excellent lens. I use both, and love them!

Thanks for all the feedback!!

I think for my immediate needs, will start with the 16-35mm.....after that, likely going mostly all primes...like the 24mm or maybe save and get the 14mm, or one of the tilt wide angle primes.

T4i continuous Video AF, CDAF or PDAF?

MK5GTI said:
the down side is, aperture has to be wide open, but if you want full control, you lose continuous AF, so not both....
That seems like a silly solution for AF. And if the lens is wide open, do you mean it would shoot at f/1.8 on your primes all the time? Cause I would imagine that would get old fast, especially if I wanted more DOF. Or is it the other way around, where it always shoots at f/11 (which would make it no better than your standard camcorder)?

Either way, the inability to control the settings manually would be a deal breaker for me

Exposure consistancy across multiple bodies.

Mt Spokane Photography said:
You will see some difference, but it should be less than 1/3 stop. Canon can adjust and match your bodies if its critical.

Excellent, that is a range that should be fine.
Interesting that Canon can adjust to match them, though for this case I doubt it would be worth it.. esp since, as I said, they are modified bodies, so I suspect Canon would not touch them anyway ^_^

Mirrorless Cameras

Saw this report this morning. Found it interesting that Canon wasn't mentioned. Although they don't have a mirror less camera yet this definitely seems to be a growing segment in the camera market space.
