Has Canon ever made public the details of their calibration procedure?

I just checked my new 5D MK III body for sharpness. I removed most variables by tethering it to my pc and shooting carefully exposed images with my macro lens, They are all razor sharp with the sharpness slider at zero and no NR. Then I used the advanced release of Adobe DNG converter. I couldn't ask for better.

Now that I've established that the body takes razor sharp images, I'll want to AFMA all my lenses (14 + 2TC), but that is a painstaking job, and I'd prefer to wait until FoCal gets updated if I can. From what I see, most of the lenses are very good, but not perfect at autofocus accuracy. Each body is slightly different.

I may just adjust the most commonly used ones for now.

Your camera can be set to adjust jpegs in camera, but raw is what comes off the sensor. If you just got the camera, do a total reset to return things to the factory settings. Otherwise you won't know what to expect.

Thanks NA, just what I was looking for. I thought the 100 might work well, but I want something snug.

I've looked at the belt system, but it felt, you know, a little geeky. Which is a joke since I'm an uber-geek. I'll give it another look.

Has anyone had experience with handheld MF on fast primes, alt primes like Zeiss on this camera. Ease of use with MF as compared to the old model? Focusing over VF is important, I know how to use LView.

Glad that we agree! It was my point to say that it really does not matter, a few hundred here or there both are good and both having so similar products that it is sometimes easy to get lost the Nikon vs Canon rants.

I'm especially interested in 50mm 1.2 as thats what I'm working with. I tested my 70-200 2.8 and it's pretty spot on with no MFA, on both center and lateral AF points. I'll post a few test shots of my 50 when I get home later.

The 50 1.2 is known for sometime severe focus shift. That particular lens is optimized optically for 1.2, thus exhibiting certain tradeoffs further down the aperture range (most significantly between 2.8 and 4.0). You may be experiencing field curvature/spherical abberation and not an AF issue.

Try manually liveview-focusing on the chosen AF point, make an exposure, then turn on AF and make another exposure.

The 50 1.2 is a bear to learn and has a steep learning curve, as 1.2 offers almost no focus, so focus-recompose isn't really an option.

I order the [Kirk (KIQRC10) QRC-1 Quick Release Clamp for Arca-Type Plates - 1" Base] from B+H yesterday and I confirmed with RRS today that the B2-FAB indeed requires the nubs to be filed down or have the rubber on the Fasten-R3 be mashed combined with blue Loctite for a good connection.

I also ordered the RRS L-Bracket w/o grip for the 5D3 (B5D3-L) and Mark from RRS confirmed that it has a strap boss for a hand strap, in case anyone is interested.

Youtube of 24-105 with and without IS enabled. IS makes a big difference hand held. The only problem is the IS noise is picked up by the internal mic. If bothersome, consider external mic.

Regarding your UV vs Protector question: The digital SLR camera bodies we are talking about here have an anti-aliasing filter right in front of the sensor, which also has UV filtering characteristics. This means that from the sensor's vantage point, it can't tell the difference whether you have a UV or a Protector filter on the front of the lens. Feel free to chose the less expensive of the two (staying in the same Hoya Pro-1 Digital line they would be of the same quality).

Regarding your circular polarizing filter and rotating front element question: If the part of the lens where the filter threads are rotates during focusing and/or zooming, it becomes harder to use a polarizing filter as you would need to re-adjust the filter after every minor focus/zoom adjustment (and risk disturbing your focus/zoom setting). Generally, more expensive lenses will have a non-rotating front that alleviates this hassle with polarizing filters.

It was a little soft, but not as bad as what others seem to be experiencing.

I also know DPP has some of the blame because images looked horrible in DPP. (I did the fix where I changed the setting in preferences and it looks better now but not as good as when I bring it into ACR.

Depends on your style, but you might want to consider a 35mm or 50mm prime instead of the 24-70 II. With a 24L, 35L or 50mm and the 70-200, you'll have good coverage without the zoom. The trade is then between low light/shallow DOF versus more lens changes/convenience. And because the prime is less than the 24-70 II, that might speed up the camera fund. :

Haaa, that make sense. I still think the issue I had however was with the 5DmkIII unit I had, so I returned it anyway. It was too obvious the softness of all my shots. Will be curious to see when real reviews come out what they say about it.

Agreed, they've certainly done something..but I think they worked on the old 1Ds3 one.

As Quasimodo said, it's not a bad problem to have if all the equipment is the same in quality. I wish I had something to suggest regarding Boston. Hopefully someone else can offer up a suggestion or two.

If my understanding is correct from the experiences noted with the brick and mortar vs warehouse vs online... If I'm looking for service and to build a relationship there are a few to stick with in the NYC area and equipment standards are the same regardless where it is purchased.

Curiously, or interestingly, I'm not sure which, nobody seems to have made mention or online options.
