5D III Autofocus

This might help, it's excerpted from this article:

Generally, an aperture value is associated with an AF line sensor. The terminology usually used is "f/number-sensitive", e.g, you may have an f/5.6-sensitive line sensor, or an f/2.8-sensitive line sensor. The f/number refers to the maximum aperture of the lens, because AF is performed with the lens wide open (i.e. the aperture you choose for the shot does not matter, only the max aperture of the lens). The use of 'sensitivity' in this context implies that light levels matter, because that's what we think of when we normally use f/numbers. In this case, though, a wider aperture simply means a wider baseline for the rangefinder system is required for that line to function. Personally, I think better terminology might be to use threshold instead of sensitivity, so an f/2.8-threshold line would require an f/2.8 lens to function, and if you mounted an f/4 lens, that sensor line would not operate. An f/5.6-threshold sensor would work with any lens having a max aperture of f/5.6 or wider.

Note that these thresholds are not absolute - a lens with a narrower aperture than the threshold might still work, but at reduced effectiveness, accuracy, and speed. Thus, Canon limits the functionality to the rated aperture for a given AF sensor. However, some third party lenses (e.g. Tamron and Sigma zooms with a max aperture of f/6.3 at the long end) effectively trick the AF system into thinking there's an f/5.6 lens attached. Likewise, although not condoned by Canon, it is possible to use tape to block some of the contacts on a Canon 1.4x extender used with an f/5.6 lens, resulting in the camera attempting to autofocus with an f/8 lens on bodies which are limited to f/5.6. Sometimes, it even works...

The -2 EV is another type of threshold, i.e., an f/2.8 line needs both an f/2.8 aperture baseline and at least -2 EV of light to function.

My biggest reluctance with getting a 7D is only the low light performance where it badly trails behind the likes of the D7000.
i cant see a huge difference in iq between d7000 and 7d sensor at high iso (2/3 of stop...maybe) and is AF, shutter lag, speed and so on the 7d is a better camera than d7000/d300s.
Not quite correct, there is a noticeable difference sensor-wise between Canon's 18mp and that sony 16mp across the whole spectrum, more so in Pentax's implemenation.
Plus 7d & d300 have the same fps and actually 7d has the worst shutter lag of all 3 (.45 vs .54 vs .64) and despite its price its a single drive camera without spot linked meter. Having said that, i like the responsiveness of 7d's AF, the reach and the build but i've never recommended it cause there is just not a single iso setting without noise :(

I own the current version of the Tamron 90mm Macro. It is pretty sharp. It suffers from some CA at 2.8 but still sharp and easy to fix in post. It would be nice to have VC so those hand held shots of bugs or flowers could be stopped down a little more.

The 70-200 upgrade will be interesting. Here is hoping they try to compete with Canon's 70-200L IS II in terms of image quality.

if the new 24-70 vc is representative, I am not too worried about their glass, which I think will be pretty good. I hope the AF and QC issues are fixed, because they really do offer great glass for 50% of Canon price.
+1
........ However, I am not got to buy it because I don't believe it will be as good as my Canon 70-200 F/2.8 IS MK2.

I do not think anyone expects that either. However, there are tons of photographers in USA and in every other country who cannot afford MK2 and for them it might be a very good option. I myself am quite interested. Let's see how it does in comparison to Sigma's OS offering. I am already very happy with their 70-300, let's see, I might finally decide to buy a 70-200 f/2.8......

I believe Tamron 70-200 will outperform Sigam OS one. Sigma used to be better than Tamron IMO. However, Tamron recently are really making some great lenses. The one you own 70-300 and the new 24-70 are very good.

*UPDATE* More Canon EOS 6D Specs Surface [CR1]

It won't surprise me if it's got a similar body construction to that of the 60D. If the plastic's good enough for glocks...

Very good point taperoo2k. Look at other industries and there are plastics used in all sorts of heavy duty applications like numerous guns and if it's good enough for guns it should be fine for a camera. Of course depending on the strength.

What to charge for wedding photography?

Forgot to mention, we don't do prints at all. That's one area I don't like and will eventually have to get into but want to avoid it as much as possible. I also don't like editing photos but I recognize that through that is where you learn to do better shooting because you realize the mistakes you made shooting the photo that you're now trying to edit.

Buy canon gear from the States (for Europe)

Hi Folks,

I think the discussion here is ok with some small hints:

Bringing expensive electronics into the EU without customs procedures is not so easy as often told. The guys at the customs know what is on in the world. And oif you bring in a rather new camera or lens the know this if the see it. And the extra fee's or legal treatment is not the finest if they get you.

But ...

it's a serious case of calculation: Improt tax into the EU for preferenced countries is low, something like 2% of price + transportation, tax is something like 20% (Germany). But the differences of the sales prices are larger in some cases. Not so different to have the flight payed - but large enough to import thins if you are on holidays in the US or Gulf-Region. And fullfill all customs requirements. The customs officers help you to fill the necessary forms and the payment is easy there, so you do not spend much time there. And all is completely legal, also if you pass the borders later on, you have alle clean and safe papers ...

Kodak 620X ISO performance vs now?

I'll agree that those samples, compared to today's 18MP tech, don't look that great. As for what it could do vs what was available in 2000, or what 2MP could do today, i'll let the arguments continue.

But think about the other side of that article. RGB Bayer Arrays vs CMY Bayer Arrays. Pretty much as written in the article, CMY arrays just let more light through than RGB arrays. Punkt. So for the same sensor, with a CMY array, you're going to let in more light and need less gain, have less noise, than the same sensor with an RGB array.
And that's going to hold true for 2000, and 2012. I'm sure the RGB arrays in 2012 are better, let more light through, than RGB arrays in 2000. But what if we design a CMY array today? Would it not be also better than an RGB array today?
Sensors are always going to improve, interwiring will get thinner, wells deeper, whatever. But there's more to a sensor than just silicon and the bits of metal therein, playing with that will only gain so much. Besides this article, only Sigma (Foveon) and Fuji (with their hexagonal whatsit array) seems to even be thinking much past the boring old "can we pack more in?", and "can we make them bigger too?".

I'm curious as to why this CMY array never came about to mainstream use in the last 12 years? Patents? (ie, Kodak patented it and promtly went belly-up, ergo noone else could make one?) Processing? (ie, Adobe and DxO said they weren't going to write another raw-converter, and no camera maker had the balls to stand up to them?) Maybe it just didn't actually fill the right colour space and was really lacking in a certain colour, despite its much better ISO performance? (Maybe it had something to do with Magenta and Yellow being totally overlapping, RGB on the graph looks a lot more spread out and clearly defined. Or maybe because of that increased Transmission, the pixels saturate more easily = less DR?)

Do you feel your photos have improved proportionally to the cost of your gear?

paul13walnut5 said:
I know the 7D has it's detractors, but for me its a camera perfectly matched to where I'm at.

Sage words Paul. A camera is nothing more than a tool, there are good photos and bad photos. There are good photographers and mediocre photographers (I say mediocre because photography is highly subjective). I think too many people get caught up in gear collecting thinking a bad photo from a $25000 Leica is somehow intrinsically more valuable. I'm glad you have found the passion is in the photo not in the gear it's taken with.

Camera manufacturers cannot please everybody, SMH ::)

Quit complaining and switch to your preferred brand. NO one is going to stop you. :P

Well, it's better to talk of something than talk of nothing. Anyway, it's all about rumors. There are other sections in this forum btw. It's not all about whining. :)
[/quote

Actually I envy them whining about their 5D3, 5D2, 1DX, 1D4. WTH, I'm still working my way to my very first full frame. :) But I can see something good out of this. Maybe, Canon will hear these and strive to upgrade their products more. Well, we can whine, take photos, discuss techniques, and discuss the photos that we've taken. At least there's a variety of what we can talk about.

EF-24-70II - Adorama

I received mine yesterday from my local camera dealer Horn Photo in Fresno. I have had much better luck getting new releases from the local dealer than I have BH or Amazon. I no longer preorder from the big stores as the local dealers get their shipments first. I have my 5D3's a week before most folks.

+1

I fully believe on ordering from a local store. I could have had my 5dmkiii the night before it was. To be released, and I could have picked up my 24-70 yesterday. Sadly my schedule hasn't allowed me to get them on that first day. Both times mine were the only ones the store received on initial shipment. You can guarantee I will order from them again in the future.

Meh... I would rather wait from the big internet retailers (Amazon/Adorama/ BH) especially if I have my current lens to shoot with. If you live here in CA, the tax that retailers charge you is already worth an accessory/s or a cheap prime lens. Just my 2 cents! ;)

Is a 46mp Canon EOS-1 on the Way? [CR1]

Nathan said:
Really hope there is some truth to this rumor. Have been holding off purchasing a Hasselblad in the hope Canon would come out with a large MP camera. I waited and waited for the 1DS mk III sucessor only to find it was a lower resolution 1DX - very disappointing. Hurry up Canon - it is about time you stopped loosing business to the medium format segment of the market.

It still wont rival the Hassy, which you should just buy.

Autofocus Performance
Canon EOS 1D X: AF worked and was fast with almost no hunting. However, metering was consistently off by +1 stop.
Canon EOS 5D Mark III: AF worked and was fast with almost no hunting. Metering worked as expected.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II: AF worked and was reasonably fast with a little hunting. Metering worked as expected.
Canon EOS 7D: AF worked, but the camera had a hard time locking focus. Metering worked as expected.
Canon EOS Rebel T4i / 650D: AF worked with a little hunting. Metering worked as expected.

So it does work with 5D3?
I'm a bit confused... :o

His tests were with a 400/5.6L and the camera firmware versions weren't stated - both lens and firmware could affect results.

Filters?

I would consider Singh-Ray to be on a par with Lee, they have filters to fit both Cokin P and Lee adaptors.
As to availability, it probably depends on the market. In the UK, I had to wait 9 months for a grad set last year, but someone I know bought a set a few weeks ago and they arrived in less than a week, so supply issues have eased. Bear in mind though, that Lee tend to produce to order, rather than keep a stock, so there will be supply problems of certain items from time to time. Some suppliers will however keep their own stock.

Ah ok because bh and adorama see to not have much of an option, do you by chance know of any other sites that have a better selection? if I google sites none have any.
I'm not in the US, so am not familiar with all the options (we have to import Singh-Ray filters), but you could buy direct from Singh-Ray. Biggest choice of filters, but less choice in delivery.
