Canon Celebrates Significant Milestone with Production of 150 Million Interchangeable RF And EF Lenses

All Canon seems to do is sell stuff, now surpassing 150 million lenses produced. It has taken Canon about 2 years since reaching the 140 million lens milestone. The addition of the RF lineup is going to keep that number climbing for the foreseeable future.

Press Release
MELVILLE, NY, February 3, 2021– Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that its parent company, Canon Inc., reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production in January 2021, of the Company’s 150-millionth RF and EF series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras1— an RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto zoom lens (released in November 2019).
Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (Autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Over the years, EF lenses have gained support from a wide range of users and production has since expanded to a total of four manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc...

2 quick C70 questions

I recently picked up the C70. Which looks amazing from the few test i've done with it so far. But i have a few questions that hopefully someone here much smarter than i will be able to quickly answer.

I know i need the camera set to Slow & Fast. but how do i get the camera to record at 120fps. It seems like whatever i do the max i can get is 60

Is there a way to setup different profiles on the C70. On my Eos R i have different profiles set up with the custom Modes C1 C2 C3 So i can quickly switch to different settings (like 24fps to 60fps) on the the camera, which helps, especially with my run and gun video work.

Thanks in advance

There will be an EOS M/EF-M announcement this year [CR1]

Uh oh, am I going to eat crow about the future of EOS M? I don’t believe so, but I have received some pretty cryptic information about an EOS M/EF-M product launch apparently coming in 2021.
I have been told that Canon plans to “pivot the EOS M system is a new direction”. Was this only brought to my attention because of the recent reporting about the PowerShot lineup moving in a new direction, or is there something actually to it?
You do remember that we have seen some very in-depth patents recently showing a new type of ILC camera from Canon that appears to have an EF-M mount.
The same source also told me that you’re going to have to wait until later in 2021 to learn more about what Canon plans to do with EOS M.
Now I’m not going back and forth for the clicks, I’m just...

Will there be any announcements from Canon ahead of CP+ this month?

The CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show in Yokohama, Japan is normally a time that the Japanese camera companies make major announcements or show off major products that haven’t begun shipping. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III and the Canon EOS RP are a couple of the big announcements in the last couple of years.
Obviously, this is not a normal year.
So is Canon going to be announcing anything ahead of the CP+ 2021 virtual trade show that begins on February 25, 2021?
Judging by the lack of leaks, patents and other signs pointing at a major product announcement, for the moment it looks like Canon is going to be pretty quiet for the show.
I was thinking about what Canon could do for the show to build a little buzz if they aren’t going to make a camera announcement.

A new feature firmware update for cameras like the EOS R5...

Canon officially unveils the PowerShot Pick

I’m late to the party on this one, but it didn’t really excite me all that much. These concept cameras from Canon like the Ivy Cliq, PowerShot Zoom and PowerShot pick are the future of the PowerShot name as Canon phases out fixed lens cameras.
Canon launched crowdfunding for the PowerShot pick at Makuake and easily surpassed their goal to make the product a reality. We should see this hit retail stores elsewhere around the globe in the coming months.
Head on over to Makuake and turn your translator on to learn more about the PowerShot Pick.

Canon PowerShot Pick Specifications:

Canon R5 sharpness with 100-400 ii and buffer issues

Hello everyone!
First of all, english is not my first language and I apologize for any mistake.
I've been doing bird photography for the last 10-12 years but I'm getting somewhat desperate with my new R5 these days... I got some serious buffer issues and the image sharpness is really bad compared to my old 5Dmkiii.

First, the buffer issue : whenever I do burst shots, my buffer starts around 40-45 pics available and after the first 3-4 shots it drops down to 20 before I can take maybe 10-12 shots if I'm lucky. This could be tolerable, but the buffer takes up to 90 seconds (timed it) to get transferred to the CFExpress card (Sandisk) and even when I'm up to around 13-15 shots I can only take one shot before it goes down to 0 again! I've tried this with multiple CFExpress cards, SD cards (300mbps) and the result is always the same. I shoot raw and save on a single card. The only time the problem seems to be somewhat less present is when I shoot without a lens and with the cap on and it seems to be worse when I continuously need to focus on my subjects. Needless to say, I missed a lot of shots this way.

As if this wasn't enough, picture quality with my 100-400 ii, which was super sharp on my 5Dmkiii, is really bad or at least hit or miss with mostly misses. I'll include pictures below to illustrate what I mean (100% crop). I'm also using the Canon TC1.4x iii, but was also using it before without any problem on my old camera, getting super sharp shots.
Yesterday I saw a Boreal owl (quite rare where I live), and it flew towards me before landing no more than 10 feet from me (was not baiting). With my 5Dmkiii I would have nailed that shot super sharp since it was really an easy shot. When I looked at my pictures I was really frustrated with the results since they were really not sharp at all. I tried using servo AF and one-shot AF, animal eye dectection AF, spot AF and got mostly the same results (RAW, IBIS on, ISO AUTO (2000), f/8, 1/800s to 1/1600s). Attached below is one of many "missed" shots and one of the few where the feathers are a bit sharper (less than 5% of the files). I also added a picture of a duck in a different setting, but again with the same softness problem. I was wondering if the use of the 1.6x-cropped frame mode sometimes could be the culprit, but even when using full frame I get this problem.

Stores are closed right now where I live, but I'll send the body to Canon to fix the buffer issue when they open back. However, I'm curious to see if anyone else had these problems. I'm also worried that even if they fix the buffer issues, I'll still end up taking pictures that are not sharp.

Two new Cinema EOS cameras coming in the first half of 2021 [CR2]

I have been told that Canon still plans to announce two new Cinema EOS cameras in the first half of 2021. I was also told that a third one would come in the second half of 2021 and that it will most likely be the 8K Cinema EOS camera. NABShow is taking place in October 2021, so that seems like a logical time for the big 8K announcement.
The two cameras mentioned for the announcement in the first half are the Canon Cinema EOS C50 box camera, and the Canon Cinema EOS C200 Mark II.
I have published the rumoured specs for the Canon Cinema EOS C50, but I haven’t had any real update on the camera in quite some time.
As for the Cinema EOS C200 Mark II, I haven’t been given any specifications for the camera, but I would expect something to hit my inbox in the next little while if the camera is indeed coming in the next few months.
As always, the pandemic could do pandemic things to...

Canon R5 extreme green color cast in Log

Hello,
on both of my Canon R5 cameras I experience a rather heavy and ugly green color shift whenever I use log.

I compared log on and log off (with "neutral" or "faithful" picture styles, which both are quite similar and always look fine).
I used a fixed WB for all shots. I used Clog, color matrix neutral (if I pick "Cinema EOS Original" the green cast gets stronger), settings 0 0 0 and Colorsprace BT.709.

I open the log footage in Premiere and apply the original LUT provided by Canon: BT709_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube

The image I get is similar in contrast and brightness compared to the shot in "neutral" or "faithful". But the colors are WAY greener and much uglier. This is especialy noteable unter tungsten light. It looks aweful.

I attached an example, a rather shaky image on my dog under tungsten light :-D
The image on the right is shot in LOG with canons original LUT applied. The "skintones" are rather ugly. On human skin this effect is even uglier... If I try to fix the image on the right by grading, its not working realy well, the colors fall apart.

Anyone experience something similar? Am I doing something wrong?

Canon releases their full 2020 financials, beat expectations

Canon Inc. has released its financials for 2020 and it looks like they exceeded expectations, even if only slightly. Canon’s imaging segment saw a 49% rise in its operating income over 2019. What’s more impressive that sales in the segment were down 25% year-over-year, likely due to the pandemic and manufacturing challenges.
Canon is quite confident about 2021 and the RF system, both for camera bodies and RF lenses. They project a 5% growth in imaging systems in 2021.
The demand for the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 really drove sales for Canon in the 2nd half of 2020, both of which greatly exceeded Canon’s sales projections. Both cameras will likely continue to be hot sellers in 2021.
There is more EOS R goodness coming in 2021 that will further strengthen Canon’s market share in the full-frame mirrorless space...

Any rumour about a R6 with 30 Megapixel ?

Hello,

did you hear any rumour about:
A) that "R" might get the ability for animal eye detection/auto-focusing by firmware upgrade ?
B) that Canon plans for an upgrades / refined R6 with 30 Megapixel ?

Does it make sense to wait for a refined/upgraded R6 with 30 Megapixel ?

Rationale behind my questions:
1. I am especially interested into the R6 because of the new feature eye-detection / auto-focusing of animals.
2. According to the relatively high price of the R6
- around €2700 for the body and
- €700 higher compared to the "R" which has 30 Megapixel
I am a bit disappointed, that the R6 only offers 20 Megapixel resolution.

Why I would prefer the "R6" / Option B) over the "R":
- quicker electronic, according to information in reviews better focusing in low light situations
- the joystick, some people commented, that it can be in the way and that you issue a function "by accident"

Many thanks for your comments.

What will Canon bring to the table with the EOS R1?

Yesterday Sony set the gear world ablaze with the Sony Alpha a1, their new flagship full-frame mirrorless camera. It boasts a ton of pretty great features that most of you already know about. In particular, I love the EVF on paper, the 1/400 flash sync and the autofocus looks tremendous.
So what could Canon potentially bring to the table with their upcoming flagship mirrorless camera, which I call the EOS R1? The rumors for this camera have been minimal, with only very broad strokes about what we can expect.

One area I think Sony should have changed with the Alpha a1 is the form factor and ergonomics of the camera. If you have ever used a flagship DSLR like the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III or Nikon D6, you can have a hard time going back to other cameras, this is especially true with the EOS-1D series of cameras.

Industry News: Sony announces their new flagship camera, the alpha a1

Sony has officially announced its new flagship alpha a1 camera body.
This new body is equipped with a 50.1mp stacked EXMOR RS CMOS image sensor and a new BIONZ XR processor. This allowed the new camera to shoot at a full 30fps.

The EVF is a pretty impressive 9.44million-dot OLED display with a crazy refresh rate of 240fps.
Other goodies include 1/400sec full-frame flash sync speed and 1/500sec in APS-C mode.  It can shoot 8K up to 30fps for up to 30 minutes, as well as 4K at 60fps for the same length of time. You also get a 5-axis in-body stabilization system that can compensate shake up to 5.5 stops.
It looks like pixel shift shooting is going to become the norm, as the alpha a1 can do it up to 199mp.

R5 / .C3 File question

Hi all,

I've been trying out the R5 in a variety of conditions. I have a Prograde 128GB CFExpress that is "full" after 62 exposures, all RAW which seems like too much use of the card for that few exposures. The card has 62 RAW files in the DCIM folder, each about 55-59MB but has 115GB of cpbf************ files in the card's numbered folder. I don't recall this kind of usage in my old DSLR CF card storage and would have thought I'd get more still images on this CFExpress card. I can't find any info on what these files represent and they are not needed or copied when I upload the images to my PC for storage and processing.

Maybe this is something I should already know but what are these files, why are they recorded, and why do they use more space than the images, themselves?

These forums have always been a great place for information and help. Thanks in advance.

Message about the obvious - R5 with 1.4x and 100-400

Did a quick image this evening of the moon in a hazy sky. Since I am still thinking about options for long lenses, I used my EF 100-400 MKii with a 1.4x Mk iii and an off brand EF-RF adapter. The photo is nothing special, but it was hand held and I am impressed with the abilities of this camera, its focus, and the IS. But, when I shut the camera down a message appeared: "Keep the lens cap on after you turn the camera off." Maybe that message is always there and I never noticed it before since I usually turn the LCD around to protect it. I just thought it was kind of humorous.

Anyway, I will not give up this lens for the RF 100-500 after seeing this result (1/800; f/8; 490 mm; ISO 640 hand held. No processing except for some cropping)CAV_0355-1.jpg ISO 640 hand

Gear of Yesteryear: DPReviewTV reviews the Canon EF 200mm f/1.8L USM

Here is a fun review of an epic Canon lens from the past. In this episode of Gear of Yesteryear, DPReviewTV reviews the Canon EF 200mm f/1.8L USM. To some, it is regarded as one of the best lenses that Canon has ever made, to others… well they still think it’s awesome.
The Canon EF 200mm f/1.8L USM is a relatively easy lens to come by, as they are regularly available on eBay. I purchased this lens used from the Fred Miranda forum for about $3000 USD. I didn’t need a mint copy and so the price was right.
These lenses can be repaired, there is a company in Michigan that can apparently rebuild the autofocus motors and make other repairs on it. Canon themselves won’t do any sort of repairs. So you need to know that going in, but these lenses are as reliable as any big white Canon L lens.
You can check out the sample gallery from the review here.
