Ricoh announces the Ricoh GR IV

There's a new APS-C compact on the streets, as Ricoh has announced the GR IV. It's the fourth camera in the series and has now circled back and included some elements from prior GR cameras that were excluded from the third model, making this perhaps the most complete model to date.

Italy Vacation - Summer 2025

Some images from Italy: Central Italian Alps and north of Sardegna. All taken with my R5 (and a couple with the DJI Mini 4 Pro drone).
The RF 100-500 was my most used lens. The RF 35 1.4 a distant second and I used the RF 85 1.2 for a few family portrait (not shared here).
In total I have taken 3700 images - a lot of them ended up stitched in large panos.

Hasselblad X2D II Press Release Spills out Early Across the Internet

One of the more intriguing rumors was the Hasselblad X2D II, and the press announcement does give us some more details that make the system a little clearer. It does indeed appear as if the Hasselblad X2D II will have some form of LiDAR built into the camera, but only to assist with focus, not as the primary focus method. This is somewhat what I suspected, that LiDAR couldn't do everything normal phase detection could do.

Canon Merges EOS Webcam Utility with Pro

In a quiet announcement (out of probably some form of embarrassment), Canon has discontinued the EOS Webcam Utility and added its features to EOS Webcam Utility Pro, now at version 2.3f

Just Announced! Mitakon 55mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro Lens Available for Canon RF

I'm always one to love to see third parties do things differently than the OEMs, and one area that they indeed have done things differently of late is the high magnification macro lenses. This used to be Canon's foray, with the semi-legendary Canon MP-E 65mm F/2.8 1- 5x Macro lens that took you places you have never seen before.

Sigma formally announces the Sigma 200mm f/2 DG OS Sports

This price surprised me, and saddened me that it's not available on Canon RF. The lens comes in at an bonkers price of $3299. For those who told me there are no good third-party lenses that people would purchase. I give you Exhibit A.

Confusing login link to comment

In the last three blog-posts by @Richard CR , the post doesn't point to a comment thread in the forum.
That might be on purpose, but what we get instead is a bit confusing. In bottom of posts is:

But if you click the "logged in" link you are confusingly trying to log into the blog-system (not forum). I assume that is not intended?

Full Disclosure: AI Content on Canon Rumors

Hello

I think I may need to address AI accusations about content this site. It did lead to a ban last week because of punctuation.

Different English speaking countries tend to have their own nuances. The way something is written in the UK or Australia can be a lot different than Canadian or American English.

Google down ranks more and more AI content with every HCU. Web sites and livlihoods have been destroyed overnight in some cases.

Full Disclosure about AI use on Canon Rumors

  1. Google Gemini is used at times to generate the backgrounds of header images. (I have meant to ask how that should be sourced)
  2. Google Gemini is sometimes used to get headline suggestions when mine are too long.
  3. Google Gemini is sometimes used when a sentence or paragraph structure doesn't flow properly. Once I/we get some suggestions that are better, we'll use that as a template by using our own language. I am not a "journalist", "author" or "writer".
  4. Grammar and spellcheck are done by Microsoft Word in my case.
  5. There is nothing content wise that is AI generated that I know of.
  6. We use a custom built meta-analysis tool to detect AI, as there are always outliers. There isn't a lone tool online that is accurate above about 70% that we have ever found.

If you do suspect AI content, please don't put it in the corresponding thread and PM any article thread starter directly. We don't want it, you don't want it.

We had a direct discussion about Heidi as well, and we're looking at evolving how she writes. I do believe you can guide an "employee" with further training, discussion and honesty. If it continues to not work out, then the solution is a permanent one.

Cheers,
Craig

It looks like Canon is finally going to go head-to-head against Sony’s Cinema Line of FX cameras with a Cinema EOS series of their own. BCN+R: The Big 3 Camera Companies are Facing Stiff Competition

We had been talking for over a year about the Japanese and Asian market retro boom, which is the reason why we are seeing some movement in the companies making integrated lens cameras. Now, before anyone jumps all over me, yes, BCN is Japan only, but the Japanese manufacturers have always given special attention to this market.

Insta360’s Antigravity A1 – The 8K 360º Experience

Last month, Insta360 announced that it was starting a new brand called Antigravity, which is its new drone lineup. Now we have some actual details on what the first drone coming to market will have, and it’s pretty impressive. Besides the drone, Antigravity is also releasing vision goggles and a grip controller to provide a far more immersive FPV (first-person view) drone experience.

LAOWA AF 200mm F2 is Coming and This Changes Everything

For quite some time, we have seen the rise of Chinese manufacturing in a variety of fields, where when they first started, their products were rather amusing, but then suddenly, if you blink, they caught up in terms of engineering and quality. A good example of Chinese lens manufacturing and optical capability at the beginning would be 7artisans, who made fun lenses, but it was like putting vaseline in front of your lens when you shot with them.

The Best Super Zooms for Canon in 2025

I have to admit, I loved the Canon EF-M 18-150mm lens - and I've never been a super zoom kind of guy, but it was a compact lens that was great for travel and I found a ton of cases that I would use either end of the zoom while out exploring a new city, or a new area. So while the purist in me says, thou shalt stick to primes with pristine resolution, a case can be made for super zooms.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM II on the Horizon?

At first, when I was reading this patent application (2025-118483), I was thinking that the Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM was pretty new and that its replacement was more than a few years away. I was just about to toss this patent application aside, and then I realized that the Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM came out in 2018. The Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM was Canon's first L-series prime for the RF mount.

Just recieved my Sigma 17-40 1:1.8

and it is awesome.... literately you open the package and say "Aw.." because Sigma plays the noble/Japanese/understatement card to the max. You take it in your hand and say "Aw" again because the weight is only 2/3 of the predecessor. You mount it on your R7 and it goes "Aw" again because that is the only RF-S lens so far that feels just right on the camera, the diameter allows the lens to feel like engineered for the R7 and not like an EOS M lens tacked with super glue on onto an adapter. The weight distributes harmonic, your hands have space to operate zoom and focus. The next "Aw" comes when you focus, you hear nothing, you fell nothing and because their is no stabilization in the lens and I shot with electronic curtain the buffer fills silently.

Only slight critic so far:

1. the start up one card manual keeps silent about the function and configuration of the AFL buttons (there are 2 of them)

2. This is my third Sigma RF lens and so far all come with a different lens hood mechanism. The 17-40 has the best lens hood in my eyes, my complain is that Sigma seems to be not sure which path to follow:

17-50 1:2.8 standard turn and click but completely overengineered. Slight bump against the hood will not make the hood fly off but let the delicate inner plastic bearing splinter. (Have broken 2 of the hoods already)

10-18 1:2.8 press and turn and maybe click system ( The one lens that wants to be treated different from all others)

17-40 1:1.8 standard turn and click with release button (best solution in my eyes)

Sigma to add a 200mm F2.0 to its Lineup

New images and specifications have been leaked about the upcoming Sigma 200mm F2.0 due to be announced on August 19. The price of this lens is unknown right now, but we know from the Canon EF days that this will not be a cheap lens. This rumor first surfaced back in April, and it’s looking like it’s now coming out for sure.
