ZY Optics releases the Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95, specially designed for Canon EF cameras.

World’s only f/0.95 lens designed for DSLR systems in production
Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) has released the new Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 for Canon EF mount cameras. The new 50mm lens has a different optical design from the mirrorless version and it is currently the world’s only f/0.95 lens designed for DSLR cameras. Due to the large size of the rear element, the new 50mm f/0.95 lens cannot be made into the Nikon version, unfortunately.
Offering a natural 50mm perspective along with an ultra-fast f/0.95 maximum aperture, the Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 is a compact prime characterized by its bright f/0.95 aperture to suit working in low-light conditions. It also affords a great degree of control over depth-of-field for isolating subjects from the background and producing selective focus effects.

A carefully-designed 12 elements in 6 groups optics system with 1pc of HRI (High Refractive Index) & 5pcs of UD (Ultra-low dispersion) elements successfully minimizes the chromatic...

There will not be an EOS 5D Mark V [CR2]

I have been told that the EOS 5D series is going the way of the EOS 7D series.
There will be no direct DSLR successor for the EOS 5D Mark IV.
The source claims that the EOS 5D Mark V development was stopped “some time ago”, and that there are no plans to make an EOS R5 version of the popular professional DSLR line.
The same source adds that Canon is obviously aware of the popularity of the 5D line and the fact that there are still a lot of shooters that will prefer the DSLR experience. The source suspects that there is some kind of development going on to appease those users, but didn’t know exactly what it was.

Who else is excited for the R5/R6 just to use as a stills camera?

With the way people are losing their minds over the video capabilities and maybe drawbacks of the overheating on the R5, you would think these cameras had a C in front of their name. Who else is genuinely excited just to have the R5/R6 as a stills camera? While I rarely do video, I pre-ordered an R5 with barely any care that it does 8K. I am extremely excited just to have:

-45MP. Plenty of room to crop compared to the EOS R/5D4
-Finally IBIS to turn all my fast primes into IS lenses
-Getting the joystick back instead of that ridiculous touch bar
-Getting the spinny wheel back
-The additional programmable button on the front of the camera
-Two card slots to never have to worry about losing images to a bad card again
-One whole stop of additional ISO compared to the EOS R/5D4. Will the camera actually perform twice as well as those cameras in low light? That's probably a stretch. But there's still probably going to be a decent improvement. Between IBIS and improved ISO, this camera is going to open up a whole new world of low light possibilities.

Wikipedia removed their comparison page of Canon EOS cameras

Hi

This Wikipedia page was one which I went back to a lot. I had it bookmarked I used it so much:

https://web.archive.org/web/2020041.../wiki/Comparison_of_Canon_EOS_digital_cameras

Since Wikipedia removed it, the version stored on the Wayback Machine will go out of date.

I wonder if anyone knows of a similar alternative?

If not, is it something that CR could host? Current cameras could have affiliate links like the Buyer's Guide. Older ones could link to a used camera seller with a similar affiliate scheme. I'm not too familiar with US vendors, as I am in the UK.

Thanks!

R5 8K RAW in Davinci Resolve 16: 8-Core Ryzen isn't enough

I downloaded some 8K R5 RAW footage to see how well it would work in Davinci Resolve (16.2.4 on Windows 10).

Editing isn't too bad, even with a GTX 1060 6GB and a Ryzen R7 2700X CPU and 16GB RAM. You can get by with just over 4GB VRAM (3GB VRAM doesn't seem to cut it). The problems start once you start to work with the color panel. Resolve only has support right now for full res rendering if you want to have access to the C-log settings (e.g. ISO).

With a GTX 1060, playback is about 7-8 fps and GPU bound, with only 33% of CPU being used
With an RTX 2070 or higher, it becomes CPU bound with 100% of CPU being used. A 2070 and 2070 Super both seemed to be around 90-100% of GPU also. With a 2080 Ti, the GPU load was about 70% or less. With the CPU being the limiting factor with these faster cards, it can only do 19-21 fps.

Of course, you really need NVMe storage, as the data rate is about 320MB/s. A SATA SSD would sort of work with a single stream, but no point in hamstringing your system that way.

Review: Canon EOS R6 by DPReview

A couple of my favourite reviewers have finished their review of the Canon EOS R6. Both Chris and Jordan came away quite impressed by the new mirrorless offering from Canon.
From DPReview:
The EOS R6 promises to be the full-frame mirrorless camera from Canon that many have been waiting for. We put it through the wringer to find out. Filmed on a pre-production Canon EOS R5. See full resolution sample photos from this episode here.

1.3 crop in R5

Would anyone like to see a 1.3 crop mode for the R5? It looks like it would give 26.6mp. A 1.4 crop would still allow around 23mp.
If you used the new 100-500mm it would be the same field of view as a 650mm lens.
Thats also about the same as a 100-400mm on a crop camera.
Not sure if they can do it in software but it depends on if the 1.6 crop mode uses some hardware feature?
For stuff that moves adding the 1.4 converter would not help with the shutter speed/iso.

I may sell my 7d ii and 5ds to get the R5 but a 1.3 crop would help with the file sizes maybe.

RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM Build Quality?

Just wanting to get peoples opinion of this lens from those that own it (extended ownership a bonus).

Coming from EF-S, my initial impression when I got this lens was that it's very sturdy and thought it was very good. Fast forward 8 months later of light usage and it doesn't feel as solid as I first remembered. However getting a few other RF glass since, and being so long not touching anything but L glass, might have raised my expectations a bit.

There is a small about of play that can be found at the front barrel of the lens (can feel it more when extended). It's not a lot, but it is noticeable. Total play at full extension is 0.022" (which Cannon support said was in spec).

Also notice a bit of movement in the lens group inside (IS Assembly?). When held vertical (front lens upwards), then tilting the lens horizontal (45-90 degrees in either direction) back and forth lightly (not shaking it), you can feel a slight clunk/clank of the lens group (again kind of noticeable). I don't remember this being as pronounced either at first.

Focusing & IS appears to be working fine.

Par for the course or is something amiss?

What will you do with your EOS R6?

I'm planning to use mine primarily for outdoor and indoor events. (But I am not a wedding photographer.) And, for the past few years, I think to myself every time I get a new body, "And I'm going to use it for some video clips too!"

This is one I'm really looking forward to. I don't mind less pixels for events (coming from a 5D IV and now an R), and hopefully lower light really will be a strong point for the R6. And, while I'm fine with computing power and storage, I like the idea of smaller file sizes for the transfer speeds from the SD cards.

I'd really be interested in hearing how others buying the R6 plan to use it!

Actual Reviews for the R5/R6?

Has anyone heard anything about when actual reviews will get released? At this point I'm guessing a lot of you tubers will need to just wait for retail bodies, but it certainly seems like at least some of them will get production bodies before launch (Fro? Northrups?) and I'd be surprised if DPR had to wait until after launch for a body? If so that almost seems like a sort of big red flag.

If the R5 ships in 2 weeks, surely there are production models already headed to DPR and the like?

Canon EOS M50 Mark II coming in 2020 [CR2]

After today’s post about a higher-end APS-C camera coming to either the EOS M lineup or EOS R lineup, I have been told that the successor to the Canon EOS M50 will be coming in the last quarter of 2020 in Japan, but may not be released until early 2021 in the rest of the world.
This will not be an EOS 7D Mark II type replacement, but a big upgrade over its predecessor. By most accounts, the EOS M50 is surprisingly Canon’s best selling ILC. It has even done very well in North America and Europe.
I have no specifications at this time.

Industry News: Sony Alpha a7S III coming July 28, 2020

Sony is going to officially announce the Alpha a7S III on July 28, 2020. This camera is probably as highly anticipated as the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 were.
Not much is confirmed about this new Sony, but most of the specifications should leak over the coming week or so.
Sony Addict has reported that the camera will likely come with 4K/60P, 4:2:2, and RAW video. along with passive cooling, though the camera won’t have the same level of weather sealing, as it reportedly has vents on either side of the camera. This design choice helps dissipate heat without the use of a fan, which does create noise.
It is also rumored to have a 12mp image sensor, which puts it well below...

There may be a higher-end APS-C mirrorless announced in late 2020, early 2021 [CR2]

I have been told that Canon has plans to announce a “high-end” APS-C camera in late 2020 or early 2021. Product launches are obviously affected by the current global landscape.
What I cannot figure out from the bits of information that I have received is whether or not this camera has an EF-M mount or an RF mount.
One source claims the new APS-C camera will basically be an “EOS R6 with a small sensor”, but the source hasn’t responded for clarification about what mount the camera would be equipped with.
Canon will also likely release an RF 18-45mm IS STM lens in the first half of 2021, which hasn’t historically been a focal range for a full-frame camera. I am not suggesting that there will be an RF-S mount, but something relatively inexpensive to stick to the front of an APS-C equipped EOS R camera makes some sense, but I’m just hypothesizing here.
One thing multiple sources seem to agree with is...

EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS II (PURE FANTASY, Unless...)

Would you buy an EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS II?

  • YES, DO IT, CANON! TAKE MY $$$!

  • NO. LET IT GO. BEDTIME FOR EF-S.

Results are only viewable after voting.

Come on, all you 70/80/90D, SL1/2/3, 7DI/II, Rebel and EF-M owners. You know what we need.
The last great EF-S lens, to keep us shooting our gear for the next decade. Perfect all around zoom range for family, travel, video, etc.
An EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS Mark II with weather sealing, four stops of IS, and an updated optical formula to better resolve those 24 & 32MP sensors.

Canon's APS-C DSLRs are still among the company's best selling products.
There's a built-in market of millions of customers. Heck, it could even be an interesting (and relatively cheap) crop option for RF bodies.
What would it really take for Canon to update an old classic, originally released in 2006? They've likely already done the engineering.
Charge us $750-1k and watch this lens fly off the shelves.

Who's with me?
