R6 AF vs R5 , and other comparisons

Hi guys!

I’m sitting here very excited about the new R5 and R6 and had my mind set on an R5 until I saw the price where I live.

what I wanted in an upgrade over the R is;

much improved and snappier AF
Better weather sealing
IBIS
Faster fps.

and looking at those things I can see the R6 might just be good enough, the question I can’t seem to find myself is;

Is the AF EXACTLY the same on the two, or are they “comparable” at best like the 1dx2 and 5d4?

Is the R6 better sealed than the R? Is it the same as the R5?

where can I find all the detailed specs, it seems like everyone says something slightly different, even in the Event stream...

and I wonder how much I will notice the downgrade in screen res.

going to 20mp from 30mp is no big deal for me. I rather do that than handle 45mp files.

DPR first impressions posted with a lot of details

DPR took their first crack at an R5 (and R6 if curious).

Rather favorable press from DPR, and it's chocked full of details over 5 pages:

Stuff I learned that I may have missed (I skipped the launch presentation):
  • Canon says to expect a 1 stop DR bump over the EOS R, which would put it in the same league as the 1DX3. Great news if true.

  • The IBIS chart vs. lenses is simply mental. I heard the 8 stops claim, but I was stunned to see it apply to non-IS lenses. Weirdly, some IS lenses don't get better overall with Lens IS + IBIS than some non-IBIS lenses do!

8 stops is bonkers. That makes handheld ISO 100 nighttime shooting (for stationary subjects) possible. Wow.
  • Sealed to the same degree as a 5D4.
Anyway, have a read and enjoy. (It's weird for DPR to be kind to new Canon products.)

Is the R6 really better than the R..for people like me?

First of all the R5 is a dream camera and in every way better than the R. However, this being just a hobby and I having recently bought the RF 70-200 2.8, the RF 50mm 1.2, the RF 35mm 1.8 and the EF 24mm 1.4, I can’t justify spending over 4.000EUR on a camera body. Selling my R and spending 2.500EUR on the R6 is a possibility though.

Even though I am really excited about some of the specs of the R6, I do wonder if it would really be a better camera for me than the R already is and I believe there are a lot of people in my position. I shoot mainly portraits and landscape, nothing fast moving usually. I do 70% photography and 30% filming in documentary style. I have always longed for Ibis in video, 120fps im 1080p and better autofocus in stills. The R6 would provide me with all three of these specs but I ask myself will I sacrifice too much for this?

There are three main points of concern:

- Image quality in stills 30mp vs 20mp. I am expecting the R6 to be much better than the R in high iso performance, lowlight etc. and if so, I would happily sacrifice the 30mp for the 20. However, I do worry though that the high iso performance is not much different and I will only be left with less resolution.

- Build quality of the body. Even though they say the R6 and the R have the build quality of the 6D series and the R5 the one of the 5D series, I remember the R, at the time of release, marketed differently, closer to the 5D series in weather sealing etc.The top screen also suggests that. I really dislike the mode dial on the R6, it reminds me of my rebel/650D days years back. It looks amateurish and seems like a step back from the R. A big point is also that the R has a more high resolution screen than the R6.

- Image quality 4k/1080p video. This might be a surprise to some but I am really doubting that the R6 will have better 4k or 1080p video than the R. Yes it has ibis, it has 4k 60, it has no crop, it has 120 at 1080p and so on. I understand all that but I mean pure image quality. With a few tweaks here and there I have found the 4k image with its 480mbit and All-I of the R superb. Now we are only getting the IPB codec. I have seen a first hands on comparison between the R6 and the 5D Mark IV (which as we know has the same sensor as the R) and they have found the All-I of the 5D sharper and being more detailed as the 4k video of the R6. They also tested the R5 and it was of course the sharpest of the bunch.

I know it’s all early days and we will just have to wait for all the reviews and I hope they will start comparing the R6 more to the R instead of the R5 as this is the comparison most people will be interested in.

...and most of all I hope that my worries are unfounded and I can buy myself this new camera without sacrificing anything ;)

Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

The Canon Ambush

This has come up on occasion rather vaguely but I thought it would be fun to reflect/analyze what we are seeing as Canon presses forward with their camera and lens development.

Canon has been bashed and ridiculed sometimes relentlessly by the armchair quarterbacks and the reviewers - one in particular comes to mind and all the while they have had a game plan - an ambush.

They changed the mount - everyone gripes ... and now ...

And they have positioned themselves so that when they did have all the pieces in place (and especially the higher speed card and the communication network and computation capability) they could really put out a product that would make folk stand up and take notice.

My record is clear, through all the bashing I have stood firmly behind my choice to move to Canon and now it looks like it'll be paying off.

EOS R5 Overheating Issues - EOS R6 No Dual Card Video Recording

Multiple reports are coming in that the EOS R5 has major overheating issues. I was wondering how they were going to pull off 8K and 4K120FPS in such a small body with no active or even passive cooling. Hopefully these are just pre-production issues and they improve the processing efficiency to the point to where this does not become a production issue.

In other news it seems like both the R5 and R6 will have terrible battery life and the R6 at least will not be able to record video to both card slots....so I'm back on the fence with waiting to see where Panasonic goes with the GH6. The R6 also still has that 30min video recording limit.

R5/R6 IBIS effectiveness ratings seem to be all over the board

I know that rating cameras and lenses with stabilization to a certain number of stops of effectiveness is kind of a dubious pseudoscience to begin with. But there are a lot of wild claims going around about how many stops the IBIS claims to provide.

In the unveiling video, 8 stops was mentioned repeatedly, but I assumed anywhere near this would only be achieved when using a lens that also had stabilization. But this video offhandedly mentions that the 50mm f1.2 should provide 7 stops, and the 28-70mm f2 should provide 8 stops because of the "image circle" of those lenses, even though those lenses do not have IS. I assume they mean the image circle is large enough to allow the sensor a lot of room to move. (Link goes right to the spot in the video that mentions this.)

Claiming anything higher than 5 stops of stabilization with IBIS only and no IS in the lens sounds to me like something between overly ambitious and flat-out unheard of. Could the IBIS really be this good?

R5 computational photography

So, what's everybody's opinion on the new computational trickery the R5 introduces? Changing the lighting in n a scene and reducing haze depending on the distance? For examples, see:

I haven't seen much talk about it yet, so I think it is best put here in a separate thread.

I find the depth based dehaze kind of interesting. Does anybody know if the R6 has it too? Did not see references to that so far.

I find it cool that they are exploring some options. At this point, they aren't powerful enough to me to justify using in camera raw conversion of DPP, but they are clearly going in a direction where these might become unique enough features to make looking into it worth it.

Some depth based masking tools would be nice. Different white balancing for a foreground in shade than for a sunlight background for example. The lighting thing has potential too. I am looking forward to more examples.

Which adapter EF to RF?

The R5 is my next camera. For adapting the Ef lenses I need adapters. I am pleased by the polarizer built in EF to Rf adapter for 10 100-400 II lens and older EF lenses. My two primes do have an built in filtercage.
For these, I will grab another adapter. Th one with the ring is suggested. But can you turn this ring well, if you adapt the R5 with this adapter to the 400mm 2.8 L II and the 600mm 4.0 L II? Or is the distance to small for it?

Will the R6 be any better in low light than the R5 in real terms?

I noticed the standard ISO range for the R6 goes one stop higher than the R5 (102400 on the R6, vs 51200 on the R5.) This makes sense because of the lower resolution and larger pixels.

But with just under half the resolution on the R6, at the risk of setting off a heated debate, is it fair to say that the high ISO noise performance between the two cameras will probably be pretty similar to one another for any photo viewed at a given size? I would think any higher amount of noise on the R5 will be negated by the fact that you are only looking at the photo at about half the scale of a photo from the R6 at any given size.

Canon R5 overheating issues and recording times

Where were these images taken from? it looks like they could be from the manual?

R5: No 4K RAW video?

It appears that while we have 8K RAW video, there doesn't seem to be 4K RAW video....or am I missing something?

If no 4K RAW...any ideas why it isn't there?

Think it will be added later with a firmware update?

I'd think it would be a no brainer to have 4K and maybe even 1080p RAW.....?

Thoughts?
