Flash Advice Please

Hi
I am a fairly accomplished wildlife photographer.
However, most (if not all) of my photography has been with available light.
I am shortly to set off on a trip to Botswana, with the main target being scarce mammals.
Many of these will be engaged at night, and spotted with a spotlight from a vehicle.
I intend to capture these with-
a/ Canon 7dMkII
b/ Canon 100-400 Mk1 (manual AF)
c/ Metz 64-AF1 Flash
d/ MagMod MagBeam
Advice needed please for-
i/ Suggestions for a set up as C1/2/3 on the Body-
ii/ Suggestions for set up on the flash.
Thanks
Roger

Potential Canon EOS R Mark II specifications [CR1]

Sources continue to talk to us about the next EOS R cameras, but the information has been pretty vague for the most part.
However, we have received our first somewhat informative Canon EOS R Mark II specifications. A camera we have been told on more than one occasion will be coming in 2020.
Canon EOS R Mark II rumored specifications:

32mp
IBIS
DIGIC X (A different version than the EOS-1D Mark III)
12fps
ISO 100 – 51,200
1 SD card slot
1 CFexpress slot
No crop 4K video with DPAF
No RAW video
5mp EVF
May get a new naming scheme

Take any [CR1] specifications lists with a grain of salt, however, a few of these specifications have been mentioned by known sources over the last couple of weeks.

Sports R: Why not now?

Without having my hands on the new 1DXiii, it sure appears that if you were shooting live view with mechanical shutter at 20fps, there would be no lag or blackout issues. If that is the case, then is the only thing preventing Canon from making an R equivalent the new housing and battery to accommodate the RF lenses?

I can see if they want to milk the 1DXiii for a year or so first, as to not canibalize sales, but you have the sensor, mechanical shutter, and everything else you need to make a Sports R, that would probably be in the $4k-$5k range. Just need to make the weather sealed body, preferably with built in vertical grip and controls. Possibly they want to try new control layouts for the Rs and Rmkii before they go all in on a RDX.

I love shooting with the 28-70mm F/2, and really hope they will just plug the sensor and mirrorless part of the 1DXiii into a slightly more compact R body.

What's your deal-breaker for the EOS Rs*

If this camera materialises it'll have to have some excellent Mraw or it's off. As someone who shot s dual 5DSr's for two years worth of wedding work it was fun, but the thought of the massive file sizes kills it for me in an era when you can't get a card bigger than 128gb in UHS-ii (I'm used to using 1 card per body per day on the R).

Just some decent pixel binning down to 30mp (ish) would be perfect, the 5Dsr had pretty pathetic Mraw.

Eos 7d mii and heat

Like a few other people on the forum I am experiencing some problems with "soft" images from my 7dii. I have now come to realise that it mostly happens when the ambient temp is 30 celcius and more. Any photos taken at distances of 20m and more can become really soft.
Now the question is, is it the body being affected by the heat or do the sensor struggle more with mirage than my other camera sensors. I shoot in South Africa and surrounding countries.
Anyone have any idea?

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III pre-order bonuses and price: it depends on the country

I've noticed that Canon EOS-1D X Mark III pre-order body prices and bonuses depend on the country where the pre-order in placed.

While the price in Canada is higher, it offers ~610USD worth bonuses more than in the USA, which makes the cost of the bundle (body+bonuses) cheaper than in USA and in France, for instance:

USA:
Price: 6499 USD+tx
- 64GB CF Express Card (~150 USD)
- Card Reader

Canada:
Price: ~6933 USD+tx
- 512GB CF Express Card (~600 USD)
- Card Reader
- LP-E19 Battery (~160 USD)

France:
Price: ~6795 USD+tx
- 64GB CF Express Card (~150 USD)
- Card Reader
- Accessory pouch

It would be interesting to compare with other countries.

New R bodies.

I cannot understand why they made such drastic physical changes to the R bodies? Through decades of evolution from customer feedback, we have almost perfect camera bodies. Everything we need is under our fingertips! The changes are minimal at best between the old and the new because it has been perfected. The operation of EOS cameras has become standard throughout most of the lines. Pick up an EOS Camera that you are not familiar with and you have a pretty much seamless transition to it with all operations. The similarity inherent in each camera line with button placement for instant changes of the critical settings is ingrained in all of us. Buy a brand new Rebel and it operates almost exactly like all Rebels from the past, The same goes for the XXD line and the XD line. Just look at the new 1DX MKIII compared to its predecessor(s). Again the differences are minimal. Why? Again, its because it has been perfected. Photographers simply can just go to work. They brought out the R System and most of the buttons are gone. Why start from scratch? Why destroy what you have worked so hard perfecting over the years because you removed a mirror? I can only hope they go back to the layouts of the EOS System we all have come to know and love. Critical settings buried in Menus are for smartphones! Then you have the size. Why do so many people want tiny cameras? Sure if you want to go light then have a camera or two designed for that purpose. I would much rather have a little larger camera that I have familiar access to a full set of controls at my fingertips than a dinky little piece of crap that I have to take my eye away from the viewfinder and start searching menus! I mean the XXD camera line is certainly small but you do not give up anything when it comes to operation or comfort. None at all. What say you?

Which EF lenses will you absolutely keep for the EOS R and its successors?

Personally, my ef 35mm f/1.4L II is so good, and still very well balanced on the R, I will keep it. Also my ef 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. Better than ever with the R's AF capabilities. Both of these are definite keepers for me.

I have no immediate plans to "upgrade" my ef 24-70mm f/2.8L II, but IS on the Rf version is tempting.

Undecided about my ef 135mm f/2 L. It already feels a little unsteady on a 5DIV, and with the adapter for the R, more so. If IS is introduced on a new Rf version, hmmm....

Nifty Fifty and/or a Pancake lens are coming to the RF mount in 2020 [CR3]

We have been told that Canon will introduce at least one inexpensive prime lens for the RF mount in 2020, and they could actually bring two. One of which would come later in 2020.
First up, an f/2.8 pancake is definitely in the works and should be announced sometime in the first half of 2020.
Secondly, the source claims that an RF 50mm f/1.8 has been shown on a roadmap which didn’t include a date for an announcement.
I suspect that we’ll definitely see at least one of these lenses this year.
Note: The image used for this post is the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 pancake.

Patent: Large LCD equipped mirrorless camera

Canon News has uncovered a patent showing a mirrorless camera with an LCD display that nearly covers the entire rear of the camera.
This patent application shows how Canon could replace the rear wheel on the back of cameras. Ridges in the screen help with tactile feedback as you change settings on the rear of the camera.
I don’t see this as something we’re going to see any time soon, but it’s cool to see Canon trying new things in ergonomics.

Adapting EF lenses to Nikon Z Mount

It seems that the Z mount is very adaptable for accepting Canon lenses amongst others
And two adapters already on sale.
It will be a very interesting situation if we can swap "legacy" Canon and Nikon DSLR lenses easily between their different mirrorless bodies. I'd like to have a Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF to work on an R mount, for example.

EOS R

Dear All,

I have a question about the IS build in the lens used on a EOS R. I noticed that the IS (Image Stabilisation) is continue on when the camera is on. Normally the IS is on when the shutter release button is pressed and about 4 secondes more at DSRL cameras. In the manual it is also told on page 143(Dutch) that the IS is continue on? Who knows why Canon did this?

Canon RF 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM to be announced this year [CR2]

*Update*: We don’t believe this lens is coming in 2020 anymore.

We have been told by a great source that Canon plans to announce an RF 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens sometime this year.  Though we don’t exactly know when.
Back in September, we saw a patent for such an optical formula. and it makes a lot of sense that such a lens would hit the RF mount sooner than later.
The same source also said to expect it to be about the same size as the recently released Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.
The image for this post is the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

Canon 1DX Mk III - For Video

Figured we could start discussion here just for video capabilities of the new 1DX3.

Personally I think it's a great step up when you factor in Full Frame Read Out and RAW capability in addition to the video feature set introduced in the EOS R (10 Bit C-Log 422 at 4K and HDMI out).

One of my biggest gripes on the DX2 was the inability to get a 4K signal out of HDMI.

Just being able to finally take advantage of the Full Frame Sensor and all the benefit that offers (like using the full expanse of the lens and all the bokeh it offers vs crop) is something I think everyone will appreciate not having to spend a new car on to buy the highest level Cinema camera to get.

How many folks will use the RAW mode routinely? I also wonder if we may see a ProRes RAW output capability later on like Nikon did with the Z series. i realize Nikon doesn't have a Cinema line to "protect" but Canon seems to be now indicating more willingness to respond by adding features post-release based on user feedback (like putting 24p back int the EOS RP and whatnot).

Share your DX3 video thoughts and desires!
