Sigma RF-S 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS

I didn't expect to find a "super-zoom" like this interesting. But I'm starting to... :)

Size and weight of this Sigma is surprising similar to my old EF-S 15-85mm with an EF-RF adapter attached.

In general, there has to be some optical compromises with a 19x superzoom. And the Sigma only goes down to 16mm, that would be a drawback. But I'm curious to find out how such a modern 19x superzoom optically compares with the 16 years old EF-S 15-85mm?

RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM

I bought the recently-launched RF 24/1.4L mainly for astrophotography, though I haven't had the opportunity for that use case yet. I did bring it on a recent trip to San Francisco.

"Sequoia sempervirens" (Muir Woods National Monument)
Sequoia sempervirens.jpg
EOS R8, RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM, 1/60 s, f/6.3, ISO 160

"Jellies" (Steinhart Aquarium, California Academy of Sciences)
Jellies.jpg
EOS R8, RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM, 1/80 s, f/2.5, ISO 3200

Probably most are aware, but this is another lens that requires distortion correction to fill in the corners. On the upside, after correction (with DxO PL) if not constrained to the original aspect ratio, the image ends up about 8% wider (6492 x 4000 output from the 24 MP R8 sensor).

Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC Oscar CONTEMPORARY coming to RF-S

Sigma is bringing a new lens to RF-S again. 16-300(25.6-480mm FF equivalent) is something new for RF. And it has image stabilisation(6 stop at wide end, 4 stops at tele end) so R100 R50 R10 also benefits.

I'm pessimistic about coordinated IS in IBIS bodies, so I doubt this lens on R7 will get 7~8 stops.

600f/4 in a 600 AW backpack

I have a 600 F/4 lens and a Lowepro 600 AW backpack to lug it around. Does anyone else use that backpack, and if so do you bother putting the Canon lens cover over the lens when packing it? Or do folk think there is no need? So far, apart from a slight ring in the padded base it does not appear to have let the lens meet the cushion, but it would be tight fit to add the lens cover.
Thanks

Canon R1 ethernet connectivity issue (wired)

I'm trying to configure an R1 to talk to the EOS Utility on my computer. I can't seem to get anything going with the RJ-45 port despite following directions in the Advanced User Guide. The camera software thinks everything is working, and the network light flashes appropriately, but when I get to the stage of starting the EOS Utility software, the camera doesn't see it. Also, my router doesn't add the camera to the LAN active device list--the MAC Address shows up but it is shown as inactive. I tried changing network ports, resetting the camera's network settings, and still can't connect.

Is it a problem with a bad RJ-45? Has anyone else connected to EOS Utility via a wired LAN? Did the Advanced User Guide instructions work for you?

R5m2 heating up in Photo mode

I’ve always thought that my camera is supposed to heat up only in video mode. However, tonight, I saw the temperature indicator while only shooting in Photo mode. That was for the first time.

As weird as it may sound, I just bought the video grip with the fans for cooling. Actually I haven’t used it before - just tested it.

Did any review have had this experience in Photo mode?

To be honest the temperature indicator didn’t raised.

I have seen in video mode how my camera gets high temperature.

Canon Patent: Small VCM Motors for Power Zoom

In this patent application (2025-023282), Canon is looking to make the power zoom motors much smaller for future lenses. Canon is exploring using 1, 2, or even more voice coil motors to move the elements necessary to zoom the lens.

Canon Patent: RF 85mm F1.8L, RF 100mm F1.8L IS, RF 135mm F1.8L IS, RF 150mm F1.8L IS

In this patent application (2025-023325), Canon is demonstrating some advanced primes with IS. We already know that Canon has come out with the Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM, this isn’t the same element design, but a new one from Canon. Considering that this patent application has an application date of December 9, 2024 – this is a new design that Canon is considering for future lenses. Could we see a Canon series of f/1.8L IS USM primes from 85 to 150? I’m not sure there is a market for a series of L lenses in this focal range, but Canon knows better than I do.

R5 II Eye controlled focus issue/DOA body?

Update: The camera was replaced by a new one by the store today, no problems with the new one =)!
The old was sent to canon as a DOA.

Hello
Long time lurker, first time poster.

I finally got my R5 II and the joy might be cut short with a possible DOA body. When eye controlled autofocus is on (calibrated and not calibrated) while looking in the viewfinder, the viewfinder shuts off for a split second and I see the lcd lighting up shortly and then the viewfinder comes back on. This happens multiple times and keeps happening. I tried with both my eyes and in different positions, far away, close and at different angles. It also does it while watching back a recorded movie or photo. Its only when eye control is on.
I tried resetting the camera, but the error is still there. I experimented with different viewfinder settings, smooth and power save on and off. Also tried another battery, and changing the auto switching, ofcourse when having only the viewfinder chosen, the problem also goes away.

Have anyone else had this issue?
Sounds like the eye control focus is triggering something that makes the viewfinder switch to the screen.

I will try the demo camera in the store tomorrow to see if the error is also on that one, maybe try loading my settings on to it.

Thank you

Sirui Cinema lenses interchangeable mounts.

These are very interesting to me. The interchangeable mounts are bound to be of interest to someone.

I've often wondered how the look would change using a Cinema lens for photos.

RRS Tripods: Ascend-14L or TFC-24L?

Looking to purchase a tripod. After some extensive research on brands such as RRS, Gitzo, and ProMediaGear, I decided on RRS for two reasons.
  1. I have their MC-34 monopod, and I'm very happy with it.
  2. Their design looks the best imho.
However, I am still trying to decide between the Ascend-14L and the TFC-24L. Currently leaning more towards the Ascend.
  • Ascend-14L Advantage: reversible column for ground-level shooting, smaller, marginally lighter.
  • Ascend-14L Disadvantage: 30 lbs max weight (compared to 70 lbs).
Many say that RRS is conservative with their max weight rating. I also figured that regardless, 30 lbs is still more than enough for a body + 600mm f/4 + gimbal head setup which totals to just over 12 lbs. Is there something I'm missing here?

Primary use cases that I can think of: travel, landscape, wildlife (with 400mm/600mm).

If anyone has any advice at all, I'd really appreciate it!

Rumor of Zeiss Otus coming to Mirrorless Mounts

Zeiss posted a teaser on Instagram yesterday showing an image taken with a Zeiss 85mm F1.4 lens. While that is not that newsworthy on their own, they certainly did tease that Zeiss was coming out with something soon.

Japan BCN Sales for January 2025

BCN is a top retail sales data aggregation company for the Japanese market. It gives us an excellent idea of what and who sells in Japan. I would imagine that BCN, outside of China's sales data, probably drives a lot of what Japanese companies do regarding products.
