Is a dedicated astrophotography EOS R coming in 2019? [CR1]

Last week we mentioned that we were told a “head scratcher” of an EOS R body was coming later in 2019, and not the high-resolution body that a lot of us are expecting to be next for the EOS R lineup.
An unknown source is telling us that the “head-scratcher” of a camera body will be a dedicated EOS R body for astrophotography with a full-frame sensor. This would be Canon’s first full-frame astrophotography dedicated camera body.
The first astrophotography camera Canon ever released was the EOS 20Da back in 2005. As a side note, it was the first commercially available digital SLR with live view, just in case you like some trivia.
The second astrophotography DSLR Canon released was the EOS 60Da back in 2010, so it has been a while since Canon addressed this niche market of camera bodies.
Take this with a grain of salt and mind the...

Sony Inroads

I stopped in at our local Camera Store in North Spokane today. They have been around for over 100 years, and still have their original downtown location.

They have evolved, however, into a high end audio visual store, even selling high end appliances.

They still sell high end cameras, but for the Canon 1 series or Nikon D5, you have to go down town. They used to have professional photographers to assist you, now, that's gone away but the people at least do know the products.

They used to have a Canon and a Nikon display in the prime location, and Sony around the corner with Fujii and others.

Thats changed dramatically. Now the Sony display takes up both spots formerly occupied by Nikon and Canon, and Canon / Nikon take up the less desirable and smaller display cases.

I have not been to the more pro oriented downtown store lately, but I'd expect the same.

I wanted to compare the EVF of the EOS R with mine to see if its as bad as mine is, but they are sold out, the salesman said they can't keep the R or RP in stock.

RF lenses I want

Who would like a RF 14-35mm f4 for the EOS-R line. I would and Canon could use the extra space of the RF lenses and not make it humongus. For my mark IV like the 16-35 best.
Another lense to complement the RF 14-35 could be a 24-300mm as a succesor to the EF 35-300 (long overdue). For me the perfect pair for travels, but I do miss my 100-400mm.

What lenses do you like to see from Canon?

PS I read a lot, but this is probably my first post.

Yongnuo YN 50mm F/1.8 II

I am new to this forum and I am new to taking photo's with a DSLR camera. I have bought a second hand EOS 50D with only 3200 clicks. I have read a lot about photography and I practiced a lot. I have been taking photo's from the age of 12. Never wanted to know more about aperture, iso and shutter speed. Never thought of it. Now I have read more about it and I find it very interesting.

Last week I bought a Yongnuo YN 50mm F/1.8 II lens. I wanted to buy a 50 mm lens but I wanted it to be cheap. This lens is cheap, costing only 89 euro. The Canon version is 114 euro. Why not pay that extra more you think? I don't know. Somehow I wanted to try the Yongnuo lens.

Took some photo's with it and I am not disappointed. With F/1.8 you have a great bokeh but in the middle of the photo it is kind of blurry when you some in. At F/8.0 you have a crisp photo. This lens is a quiet one. Af works good, not great. Sometimes it has trouble finding the right sharpness, but most of the time it performs good.

It is a great lens for portrait photography and even a better lens for street photography. I took some test pictures at the Rotterdam harbor last week and they look great.

I like to take photo's of things that are so normal that you don't see them anymore. Like a nail in some wooden stairs. This lens makes a sharp photo of the lens and the rest of the photo has a very nice bokeh. The nail really pops out of the photo.

Canon Loan Evaluation Return Stolen/Missing during FedEx Shipment!!

I am not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I wanted to share my story in the event others (hopefully not) find themselves in a similar situation.

I currently own a 5D IV along with a few L lenses which I have been extremely happy with. With the release of the EOS RP, I was curious about the Canon full frame mirrorless series considering a pro-level body would be coming at some point. I ended up getting a Loan Evaluation of the EOS R through the CPS Program.

The EOS R arrived with an EF adapter (as requested), a battery, a charger and a bag. I used it for a few days. It was fun but not for me.

I used the same box it came in and returned it to Canon (to Virginia from NYC) via FedEx Ground. I used my FedEx account. I weighed the package at home (about 7 pounds) and printed out the Fedex Label, adding a "Declared Value" for the amount of the contents (for an extra fee of course). I took it to the FedEx drop off location counter and asked for a receipt. (Smart decision ever!!!) She counter-person weighed the package (6.8 pounds) and printed me a drop-off receipt listing the tracking number and the weight.

Two days later, I received an item return confirmation from Canon CPS, noting that the charger, EF adapter and bag were returned but that the EOS R and the battery (which was inside the EOS R) were not!! Initially I thought there was some kind of mistake and contacted Canon who checked the package again and were unable to find the camera and battery.

Puzzled by this I decided to look at the tracking information and package details. I soon noticed that my originally shipped 6.8 pound package was delivered weighing 5.1 pounds!! Packages don't magically lose weight during shipment. And of course the difference in weight was similar to the weight of the EOS R body and battery. It was clear to me that the body and battery were removed from the package while in FedEx's possession, resealed and sent on its way.

I filed a claim with FedEx adding scans of the original drop off receipt noting 6.8 pounds and a printout of the delivery records noting 5.1 pounds. I figured with that hard evidence, this would be a routine open and shizzle case...I mean how can they justify the weight difference...a difference that was noted by their own facilities using their own scales. FedEx Claims called me back about 10 days later saying that they needed me to have the original package available for them to inspect for tampering! I explained to them that this wasn't a damaged package claim and that the missing weight account for the weight of the items missing. I explained that a package doesn't just lose weight on its own!! When I asked her for an explanation she could not give me one to justify the weight difference. She concluded that if the original packaging isn't available for them to inspect, there is NOTHING they can do for me and they have to deny the claim.

Canon discarded the packaging soon after it arrived. They explained that if the box does not appear to be damaged, they discard the box, so it was not available for FedEx's inspection.

At this point, I figured the best way to handle this was go straight to the top. I figured if I can alert a higher-up about a potential (and likely) thieving employee, that may cause some concern. I used the Elliott Advocacy website and was able to get names and emails of FedEx executives. https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/fedex/

I emailed my original claim narrative to them noting that it was denied despite the clear evidence that items (weight) was removed from the package while in FedEx's possession. The next day I received an email from someone from Executive Management saying that my claim was forwarded to him for escalation and that my claims will be honored!!! A check for the amount of the missing items and the freight charge was mailed to me a few days later. The check cleared immediately.

BTW if you are wondering how Canon responded to this...well they sort of didn't. They were nice and understood the situation but in the end they needed either their equipment returned or compensation for it. After I explained to them what happened, they sent me an invoice for the missing items and gave me 30 days to pay it, otherwise the invoice would go to their legal department for collections. Initially I was a bit disappointed that Canon was unable to contact FEdEx themselves as I figured that FedEx would more likely listen or act on a claim from CANON as opposed to little old me but...I do understand that it is the sender's responsibility in almost all cases (Ebay, etc...) to make sure the item reaches the recipient and it it usually the seller/sender who initiates any claim against the shipper. That is generally not the buyer/recipient's responsibility.

So, all is well after a stressful ordeal. Lots of lessors learned. I was glad that I got the official weight from a FedEx counter, otherwise FedEx could have claimed that my weight (using my scale at home) was not correct. I also was glad I added the "Declared Value". Declared Value, as most of you know, if not insurance exactly, it is the maximum liability FedEx is responsible for IF they are found to be at fault. But, if there is NO Declared Value, the maximum default FedEx is liable for, regardless of fault, is $100. Regardless of the claim amount, it seems to be quite the task to prove FedEx is at fault. You really have to have your paperwork ready and be prepared for a fight. Take it as high as you can, despite denials on lower levels. Lastly, be sure to keep the packaging if possible. I have read that this is common during damaged item claims, but apparently missing items as well.

I hope no one ever has to go through this, but if you do, I hope some of the tips above will help.

Stay shooting my friends.

7D Mark II ?

Hey Guys,
I am new here and looking for some help. I have a 6D Mark II, it's a great full frame and all around good camera.
I been shooting a little of never thing over the last years landscape, outdoor portraits, birds, wildlife, indoor/ outdoor sports and air shows. I really like shooting air show's old war birds flying or static. So I been looking hard at the 7D Mark II corp-sensor, 10 frame a second and 65 focus point. I am not sure to purchase an 7D Mark II at the lower price or wait for a 7D Mark III. I am thinking the 7D Mark II would do a better job on the flying aircraft with a 1.6 corp factor and it's better focus system vs the 6D Mark II. I would use the 6D Mark II as a second body with a 16/ 35 L lens for static planes. I would appreciate your feedback and reconditions.

Canon’s roadmap for 2019, included an EOS R camera that no one is expecting? [CR2]

We have been told by a source with a pretty good track record (but not perfect) what we can expect the rest of the way from Canon in 2019.
First up, it’s not a secret anymore, but we’re going to get the Canon EOS 90D, a camera that will apparently replace both the EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II. With the latter line being killed off by Canon.
We’re told to expect an announcement near the end of August.
Apparently, a new EOS M body will come at the same time. It has been described to use as “very well specced” and “aggressively price”, with Canon wanting to show that the EOS M lineup isn’t dead. No specifications were provided to us.

No other EOS M cameras or lenses are scheduled for 2019.
What about the EOS R system?
The same source tells us that a new EOS R camera is coming later in 2019 and that it is a “head scratcher”...

Rest well Canon EOS 7D series [CR2]

We’ve mentioned a few times previously that there would be no follow-up to the EOS 7D Mark II. We’re again hearing more about the demise of the EOS 7D series in favour of an EOS R solution. We may be beating a dead horse a bit here.
Will it be an APS-C EOS R?
We have been told that a few dealers and distributors are a bit worried about what Canon has in store for the replacement to the popular EOS 7D Mark II, as those buyers also buy lenses, more than EOS 80D buyers do. Canon has apparently told a couple of dealers that this concern will be addressed sometime later in 2019.
There has also been talk that an EOS R replacement for the EOS 7D Mark II will require the RF mount to meet target focusing speed and accuracy. Apparently, there’s more to come with the RF mount that has yet to be revealed to the world. We were given no additional insight into what we haven’t been told.
We expect an EOS 80D replacement to come sometime in 2019 that may...

RF Trinity Len Sizes?

Anyone who has been to these photo shows can you confirm the size of the trinity RF Lenses? Are they the same size as their EF Counterparts? I tried putting a 24-70mm and 16-35mm on a EOS R and with the adapter the size is just huge. Hoping that the RF Lenses will be the same size or less so it would balance more with the need of an adapter. I can't tell from images of videos of what the size (length/width/diameter) of them are. Will the 15-35mm, 24-70mm, and 70-200 be interal zoom or external zoom?

This website has the patent and varying lens lengths. https://www.canonrumors.com/patent-lots-of-optical-formula-lens-patents-for-the-rf-mount/

This is a quote taken from the length of the 15-35mm. There are three sizes what do they mean?

  • Whole length of the lens 135.05mm 125.84mm 125.33mm
What do the different numbers mean?

When to go mirrorless vs DSLR - a Canon Ambassadors opinion

From a Canon CPS Newsletter:

Canon article about Canon Ambassador Richard Walch, action sports photographer, and his opinion on when to use what.
For me the best images are spontaneous, and the EOS R gives you stunning full-frame quality in a package that's super portable. But you can't forget Canon has worked on the EOS DSLR range for 30 years. They are super reliable and built tough. So now I have a choice.

Have a nice read

Using the canon R and the BG-E22 vertical grip VERTICALLY with touch-drag

Hey gang,

Just picked up the BG-E22 battery grip to mainly provide extra battery power for when you shoot with Wi-Fi transfer on. Secondly to help with the 70-200 balance and vertical shooting.

Regarding touch drag, I had it mapped to the top right quadrant when I shot before the grip.

Heres the problem: when shooting with the vertical grip VERTICALLY, the touch drag is STILL mapped to the top right, except when it’s vertical it end up being located on the top left...the farthest point from my thumb. It’s still operates like I was holding the camera as I would without the vertical grip; by the orig handle.

To equate this with the 5d3/4, the vertical grip comes with an additional joystick on the vertical grip, to essential recreate the same focusing ability when you use the grip vertically.

Since the canon R doesn’t come with a joystick, the touch-drag is it’s primary focusing system. By not providing a solution for touch dragging while using the battery vertically, its the same as if the 5D vertical grip didn’t provide a joystick.

SOLUTION:

Firmware update to alter the “TOUCH & DRAG AF SETTING” submenu “ACTIVE TOUCH AREA” to include and option to rotate the equivalent desired selection when the camera is vertical AND has a vertical grip attached.
In other words, if the R without the grip has the top right quarter of the screen mapped, when you use it vertically with your hand on the vertical grip, it’s still mapped to the top right,. However since the camera is being grip vertically with the BG-E22, the ACTIVE TOUCH AREA is effectively the top LEFT now.

Idealy, canon should make the ACTIVE TOUCH AREA include a second ACTIVE TOUCH AREA selection when the BG-E22 grip is attached AND the camera is in its vertical position. This is probably more critical if you have the position method being set to ABSOLUTE.

INTERM SOLUTION:

If you use the upper right (or any quadrant) AND use RELATIVE positioning method, set it from TOP RIGHT to RIGHT, that way the “top right” of the screen is still active when you hold the camera vertically with the BG-E22 attached.
I hadn’t seen this covered in any reviews so I thought I’d post it.

Any thoughts

Patent: RF mount super telephoto lenses

It looks like Canon is indeed working on their RF mount super telephoto optical formulas. We were told a couple of days ago that an RF 500mm f/4L IS would be the first super telephoto lens launched for the EOS R system.
A USPTO patent has appeared that shows optical designs for an RF 400mm f/2.8L IS, RF 500mm f/4L IS and an RF 600mm f/4L IS.

The first supertelephoto for the RF mount to be an RF 500mm f/4L IS [CR1]

We were told that development for RF mount super telephoto lenses is underway and that internal documents show that an RF 500mm f/4L IS USM will be the first super telephoto lens for the RF mount.
In the past, we’ve also been told that an RF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM was also under development, though we have yet to see any RF related patents for super telephoto lens design.
Canon tends to announce super telephoto lenses in pairs, so an RF 300mm f/2.8L IS and RF 500mm f/4L IS being announced alongside each other wouldn’t be a surprise.
No timeline was given for such lenses, and I wouldn’t think RF mount super telephoto lenses would come until we get that EOS-1D level EOS R body, which is still a ways away.
Thanks Dr Grammar
