If you go R/RF?

What would be your basic kit (lenses and body) if you switched to the Canon R/RF system? (Gear does not yet have to be available)
Me:
  1. Canon RP or R.
  2. RF 28-70mm f/2L
  3. RF 85mm f/1.2
  4. RF 135mm f/1.2L

I shoot fashion and portraits. I'm told I need a 35mm and a 50mm for that kind of work. I don't think I do. Have the 35mm covered in EF anyway.

Wildflower Photos

A few wildflowers images from the Smoky Mountains. All are shot with a Canon 180mm macro and the Canon 5D Mark IV using live view to focus manually, exposure set manually using the live RGB histogram and adjusted to produce the first blinkies, and tripping the shutter by using the Touch Shutter set to Sensitive. A tripod is used in each case to shoot the focus stacks that are combined with Helicon Focus..

Settings to print to roll paper on a PRO-4000 from Photoshop

Hello, I'm trying to print to roll paper from Photoshop on a PRO-4000. What should my paper size settings be? I assume the width should be set to the width of the roll? The height? I guess however high I want the photo to be? Should my position on the paper be set to "center?" Should it be set to portrait or landscape orientation? The output of the printer does not seem to do what I want it to. I'm printing to a throwaway roll of paper just to figure it out, and I've had all manner of screwed up prints. I'm just trying to print a thin strip that says "testing the printer" over and over, but I've had it come out sideways, cut off, with huge wasted space around it, everything except how I want it. Is there a tutorial on this anywhere? Thanks.

The 2020 RF lens roadmap, up to 8 new lenses coming in 2020

We’re told that a loose roadmap for RF mount lenses in 2020 has been shown to select people and that the plan today is to release between 6 to 8 new RF mount lenses in 2020.
Amongst those lenses will be f/4L zoom lenses, perhaps some of the recent patents give us some clues.
At least one “crazy look-what-we-can-do” lens is coming next year.
There will also be at least one fast L prime lens and a couple of non-L lenses, it’s unknown if they’ll be zoom or primes or both at this time.
There has been no world on tilt-shift or macro lenses for the RF mount as of yet.

Canon 35 mm F1.4L II USM. Strange sound inside. Bad copy?

Hello. I've recently bought new lens Canon 35 mm F1.4L II USM. First thing: loose focus ring (longitudinal play). Like on video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-2QGo2a5ZE .I asked official repair center about this problem. Answer was - "no problem". Second: I hear some strange sound when little shake lens up and down, like loose part inside. When I put the focus ring in infinity position sound is disappear. I bought the lens directly from the manufacturer. I have another lens, but all of them have image stab system. I thought, that prime lens without IS must be absolutely quiet inside.
Please, owners of this lens, can you check your lens for this "problem"?
I want to know, problem or not...

Another weather sealed decent performer from Samyang/Walimex/Rokinon for RF- (and Nikon Z-)Mount: the MF 14mm f2.8

My Verdict: a Highly recommended lens.

After first slight disappointment: Knowing the lens since a couple of years this copy is confirming the good things I know about this lens - but I have to give the quality assurance department in Samyang the task to check the lenses they give out a bit better. This copy needs at least a readjustment.. And in terms of useability (nice buttery manual focusing) and weather sealing it is really step up against the original version..

On the other side: it is a very special lens - this is the nature of ultra wide angle lenses. It has some flaws but there are excellent workarounds.... finally what you get from the lens is surprisingly good...

For whom is this lens for?

It is made for owners of the R-Mount cameras - but the EF version shows similar results.
Everybody who likes a lightweight high performance lens.
When to take the RF Mount version instead of the EF mount? This is a very good question. For my taste: if you have decided to got with the R-Mount and/or you do discontinue with EF Mount: go for it. It is lighter and easier to handle.
It is more a lens for enthusiasts, for people who like to shoot manual focus.
But manual focus is so much fun to use on the Canon mirrorless cameras....
But the lens has a bit of weaknesses too:

It is not native RF: I guess a lens designed for the 54mm bajonett diameter and the short flange distance can be even smaller and lighter
I miss an EXIF chip - this would be even better
Not a real weakness but a wish to the designers @ Samyang: instead of a color mark please but something you can feel that you can mount the lens on the body without looking at it....
But if I look at the lens at a glance: I give the lens a highly recommended!!!

Canon Inc. releases Q1 2019 financial results

Canon Inc. has released its 2019 Q1 financial results.
Canon presentation summary of the imaging division:
In the first quarter, sales of interchangeable-lens cameras were down 19% to 850 thousand units. This reflects the combined impact of accelerated market contraction for DSLRs, in particular, entry-level models, and economic slowdown in China, which is a sizeable market for interchangeable-lens cameras.
The habit of capturing images with smartphones with improved cameras has become a part of the daily lives of consumers. As a result, the market for entry-level DSLRs is contracting at a pace that exceeds the outlook we had at the beginning of the year. That said, we expect the user base of professionals and advanced-amateur, people who value the image quality and expressive possibilities afforded by cameras with large sensors and an abundance of interchangeable-lenses to remain. For the market overall, however, we expect the trend of market contraction to continue for...

Medium Format Dreams

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a medium format camera from Canon along the lines of the RP? Just call it the Canon MFR. ;) Nothing fancy, just a basic camera in MF that would come in at < $2,500. I don't mean MF size like the Pentax 645Z. More a sensor the size of the one found in Phase One's 100MP XF camera (53.7×40.4mm). Then just a couple of really good zooms. Anyway, I know Canon would probably never do this, but it is nice to dream. :) (I have no idea what a sensor that size costs.) Never mind. I just looked it up. I need a permanent roof over my head first. ;) Stupid dreams. :):):)

A leaked document suggests that Canon has a 63mp full frame image sensor in the works.

Update After speaking with a couple of people, it turns out that this image sensor has no chance of ever making it to a consumer product. One person said its likely application is security if it ever actually makes it into production.
Without giving specifics, the source said that the format of the document removes the chance of this being for consumer photography applications.

A leaked document shows that Canon has a full frame 63mp image sensor in the pipeline. There is no way to verify this information or this document’s authenticity, but from reading the document below, things do look legit.

A month with the EOS R

Its been about a month or five weeks since I got the EOS R, and I'm trying to find the right words to describe just how I feel, without coming off as a fanboy or just gushing over things.

What I like -
Focuses in light that the 5D3 and 5D4 cannot, with lenses they wouldn't dare to even try with.
The focusing seems faster, livelier on servo, even a bit livelier on one shot.
The granularity of the configuration, whereby (almost) any setting can be assigned to different buttons.
The ramp up of viewfinder brightness in low light which gives my 60+ y/o eyes a break in low light. The OVF of the 5D3 (and borrowed) 5D4 are just so dim in low light by comparison.
The vibrationless, sort of "Leica M" exposures.
The size, or lack thereof.
Ditto for weight.

What I don't like -
The viewfinder ramp up, in low light focusing. I think what its doing is raising the gain on the sensor to "focus" then returning it back down to its set sensitivity? If you make a big change in subject distance in low light it seems to white out, focus at about the time the viewfinder catches up with the gain increase, then settle back down. This all takes a moment.
The EVF blackout when the camera is idle for a bit. I've not found a way around this, but maybe there is one. Shooting hoards of motorcycles at Bike Week, I had to learn to "activate" the EVF with a flick of the shutter release or back (focus) button, as the traffic light turned green, so I'd have the EVF on as the bikes passed. Its just one less thing I'd rather not think about, and at times the camera wasn't ready, so I just shot anyway. It focused, and exposed ok when I did that, but of course framing wasn't terribly great.
The few limitations on features and functions that can be assigned to buttons. Wha? I praised that, now I'm knocking it. Well... one thing I like to set on the fly is the metering mode, especially when I'm out all day, varying light from side light to high noon sun, varying background, varying subject, and the way I'd like to render the images. For instance, I took a break from shooting bikes to photograph some of the locals and (many) passers by at Bike Week. In the middle of that, there'd be a great custom car or bike rolling down Main Street. It was a button fiddle to reset metering modes, and so I just left it to Evaluative, and did "ok". Bracketing is not an option as the time is insufficient with moving vehicles. Anyway, the only way I've found to set the mode is to get the Q button set up in "metering mode" so its fairly accessible. That took a bit of manual sleuthing to do. This is no deal breaker, but you can't assign that "function" to other buttons.

All of that, just me of course, YMMV

Bottom line - I gave my 5D2 to a friend to get them into full frame photography. I'm sure they'll appreciate. It will go well with the 7D I gave them a few years ago.

I intentionally did not get the RF 24-105/4 L with the camera body. My concern was having two lens lines that were only interchangeable "one way". My outlook has changed. I'll probably get the RF 24-105, and just dedicate it to the R body for 90 percent of what I shoot. That's my go to lens for years. I can't see me keeping the 5D3 too much longer, maybe a two years - depending on what Canon does with the R series bodies. Switching from OVF to EVF and back, and controls being totally different, takes some getting used to.

So anyway, just my thoughts, comments welcome.

Replacement: Eos R or 5D Mark IV again?

Hi Guys!

I had an backpack incident on Monday (silly, as I´m looking for an new one). The result is an heavily damaged 5DIV. It is not repairable (CPS).
I do not want to spend the money for an 1DXII as an successor might be coming in one year, so I will stay with the 5D class.

My question:
Would you go for an Eos R with the batterygrip, or stay with the 5DIV?

I own a lot of Canon glass, mostly using the 600LII+1.4III for birding and some primes around 16mm to 100mm for landscapes.

Does onyone have experience with the 600LII+1.4x on both bodies? How fast is the AF working? I read yesterday, the 5DIV is faster, but do not know if this is true.

Thank you a lot for advice
Daniela

Is a brand new 32.5mp APS-C sensor from Canon on the way? [CR1]

There has been a flurry of sensor talk over the last few weeks, though we haven’t posted much about it because most of it cannot be confirmed with any sort of certainty.
We’re now told that a brand new 32.5mp APS-C sensor is slated to arrive in an EOS M camera as well as in a DSLR sometime in 2019. This comes shortly after being told that an all-new 24mp APS-C sensor was on the way.
The source claims they’re “100% certain” that this sensor is coming in 2019.
I cannot confirm this information, so please take it with a grain of salt. It is rated [CR1].
