Canon publishes a paper discussing a new 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory

The Japanese Journal of Applied Physics has published a Canon Inc. paper on a global shutter entitled  “A 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory” by Masahiro Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sekine, Takafumi Miki, Takashi Muto, Toshiki Tsuboi, Yusuke Onuki, Yasushi Matsuno, Hidekazu Takahashi, Takeshi Ichikawa, and Shunsuke Inoue.
From the paper:
In this paper, we describe a newly developed 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor (CIS) with dual in-pixel charge domain memories (CDMEMs) has about 5.3 M effective pixels and achieves 19 ke− full well capacity, 30 ke−/lxcenterdots sensitivity, 2.8 e- rms temporal noise, and −83 dB parasitic light sensitivity. In particular, we describe the sensor structure for improving the sensitivity and detail of the readout procedure. Furthermore, this image sensor realizes various readout with dual CDMEMs. For example...

The future of the Canon EOS-1D X series [CR1]

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II was announced on February 1, 2016, which makes it just over 3 years old. Higher end Canon cameras seem to have a product lifecycle of 4-5 years now.
We were told last month that testing for an EOS-1D X Mark II replacement has begun.
We’re now being told to expect an announcement for the camera between Q4 of 2019 and Q2 of 2020.  As we’ve mentioned on a few occasions, the Summer Games are in Tokyo, Japan beginning in July of 2020.

While the source had no specific specifications, as it’s far too early for that type of information to leak out, it was said to expect an evolutionary update and nothing revolutionary. The EOS-1D series simply has to work and be the workhorse professional photographers expect.
There was no word as to whether or not this would be the last of the...

Samyang new 85mm f1.4 RF - including weather sealing

Samyang send me the 2 new lenses for RF for testing (Well, i was a bit astonished by the way). I took the lens around and made some test shots, comparing it with my Zeiss Milvus as well as the Canon EF 85mm f1.4 L IS USM.

This is my verdict about this lens:

After first mixed feelings: I am pretty excited about the lens. In terms of the results you get from this lens: it is just wow!!! Very decent images, excellent image quality - if you know how to use the lens. And in terms of useability (nice buttery manual focusing) and weather sealing it is really remarkable.

For whom is this lens for?

It is made for owners of the R-Mount cameras - but the EF version will show similar results.
Everybody who likes a lightweight high performance lens.
When to take the RF Mount version instead of the EF mount? This is a very good question. For my taste: if you have decided to got with the R-Mount and/or you do discontinue with EF Mount: go for it. It is lighter and easier to handle.
It is more a lens for enthusiasts, for people who like to shoot manual focus.
But manual focus is so much fun to use on the Canon mirrorless cameras....
But the lens has a bit of weaknesses too:

It is not native RF: I guess a lens designed for the 54mm bajonett diameter and the short flange distance can be even smaller and lighter
I miss an EXIF chip - this would be even better
And the 1.1m minimum focal distance is a sad thin: I would prefer it mach shorter, even shorter than the usual 85 mm...
I give the lens a highly recommended!!!

For mor information please read my blog:

I am thankful for every comment..

Switching from EVF from Manual/Auto can't save with Custom Buttons

I like the EVF, But In video The EVF Auto Mode, it automatically switches back and forth when I have the camera on a gimbal.
So I saved it with my video settings to be manually changed, then setup a button to toggle it on/off. So i have no gimbal issues

But in picture mode i like having it on Auto. Begin able to review photos on the screen after i take the picture.

It seems weird that I can't have that setting change based on my custom button settings....

Or am i doing something wrong? Thanks.

Future DSLRs with RF mount?

What if the rumored 1D X Mark III appeared with an RF mount as opposed to the venerable EF mount? Would it be shunned by current 1D X shooters, or would they be excited about the prospect of shooting with the new RF lens options? My hunch is the need to adapt most of the lenses that 1D X shooters rely on (and currently aren't available in the RF lens lineup) might be a showstopper.

But is it???

RF mount cinema camera is in the works, but it won’t arrive any time soon. [CR1]

As we get closer to NAB next month, we seem to be seeing an influx of cinema-related information. With new PL mount prime lenses coming, along with a new CN-E 100mm lenses and rumored cinema cameras and camcorders, this show could turn out to be a big one for Canon.
We’re told that an RF mount cinema camera is in the works, which is a pretty obvious direction for Canon to take. We’re told that the form factor(s) being developed could make the RF mount cinema camera relatively unique in the space, though what this means wasn’t articulated to us.
We were also told not to expect such a product until 2020 at the earliest and that it would probably come later than that.
The Canon EXPO is in 2020, so we may get some hints about what’s coming for the RF mount within the cinema lineup.

New camcorders coming from Canon ahead of NAB

We’re told to expect at least one camcorder to be announced ahead of NAB next month. We’re likely going to see a “professional” version of the VIXIA G50.
We’re also told that the upcoming PL mount CN-E prime lenses coming from Canon are a bit of a “throwback” to the discontinued Canon K35 cinema lenses. The older K35 lenses remain quite popular for filmmakers, and we’re expecting these new PL mount prime lenses to offer a similar classic look with modern features and build quality.

CN-E 20mm T1.5 L F...

Nikon readies a Canon EOS RP competitor

It looks like Nikon is closing to announcing the Nikon Z1, an entry-level full-frame competitor to the Canon EOS RP.
Nikon Rumors posted what looks to be a legitimate leaked image of the new camera body. No specifications have been mentioned as of yet.
Can they meet the same price point that Canon hit with the EOS RP?

The next EOS R system camera gets a mention again [CR1]

The third camera body in the EOS R lineup is likely being announced in Q4 of 2019 and all indications seem to point to it being a high-resolution camera.
We’re being told that the next EOS R camera will have more than 70 megapixels and will keep Canon at the top of the full-frame sensor resolution rankings. The same person also mentioned that IBIS is definitely going to be featured in the camera, something that’s been reported previously.
We previously wrote that the next EOS R would sport dual card slots and feature Canon DSLR ergonomics with things such as a joystick coming to the EOS R lineup.
More to come…

The Future of the 7d and xxD series

The latest rumors suggest that there is gonna be a merge of the 7d and xxd (80d) series to save resources. That means there is only going to be one camera.
But how could the 7d series and the xxd series be merged into one camera? Isnt the 7d series basicaly better in any poissible way except the flippy screen?

Would this mean that this camera will basicaly be the succesor to the 7dii but with a flippy screen?
what features differentiate the 7d and xxd series that we could see in a merged body?

Canon’s plans for NAB 2019 next month [CR2]

The NABShow is usually where Canon does its major Cinema EOS announcements, and this year will be no different.
We’re told to expect two new Cinema EOS camera bodies announced. One of the cameras will be the follow-up to the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II and the other camera will be some kind of high frame rate specialty body.
We previously reported that the C300 Mark III would have a sensor upgrade option for future 8K options. We’re told that this is still the case and that the C300 Mark III might also get a full frame sensor size upgrade option. The C700FF sensor would likely be the sensor used.
Both cameras will reportedly be EF and PL mounts, unfortunately, there is no RF mount options being announced for NAB.
Canon will also likely announce a CN-E 100mm cinema prime lens alongside...

Metering values: Have they been changed?

So I mentioned this on another thread but felt it might be interesting, though I freely admit it doesn't have any of the trigger phrases in it, no dynamic range, OVF vs EVF, etc etc.

So many of you probably know and understand the way cameras meter and give a value for exposures, for many years if you took a picture of a defocused evenly illuminated monotone, irrespective of it's reflectance (within some limitations), you got a histogram spike around half a stop below center, the infamous 12% vs 18% variation. Well I have been playing with my cameras and I noticed that when I do that now I get a spike in the histogram that is centered.

ANSI standards, as I understood them, mean reflectance meters should be set to 12% grey, 1/2 stop below midtone, yet mine are now giving an equivalent exposure of the meter being set to 18%. I actually had both in camera meters set to -2/8 as I set them up when I got them and did cursory testing to set them there. What I didn't allow for was the fact that they don't seem to be behaving the same way as all my previous in camera meters.

Has anybody else noticed or have an explanation of this?

Canon will take over the market again

Canon will take over the market again
Within the past 15 years, Canon has taken control of the photography market through its lenses. The company focused on producing a variety of lenses in terms of use and specifications to provide the difference between prices
The company provided lenses in terms of quality and reasonable prices compared to other companies, which made the photographer think of getting Canon camera because of the quality of the lenses without worrying about the quality of the camera itself, it even reached to abandon some specifications in the cameras only because of the lenses within the budget and excellent quality.
In the previous period, the company released two new mirrorless cameras with a new mount and designed in a creative way with A large area, in addition to this design the company has introduced qualities that may seem at first glance useless as in the Canon RP camera, Unreasonable choices for video and photographing, which made us grumble and write resentful messages to the company and social media directly
If we think deeply about what Canon is planning and looking at, we will find that the plan is now to regain control of the world of photography again through the new lenses and re-focus on the lens long-term investment and the camera is secondary and can be changed from time to time
The company has previously introduced a new range of RF lenses for mirrorless cameras with imaginative features, focal length and large aperture that we have never seen while prices remain acceptable in terms of quality and lens strength as well as other companies.
A short time ago, a series of lenses were introduced to the markets that share one common factor: high quality, large aperture, and fast performance

Also, there are rumors about a lens that may be considered the first of its kind because it offers a very wide angle and large aperture and is considered the fastest lens of its kind and is a lens
Canon RF 14-21mm f / 1.4L USM
Also introduced a series of other lenses, including the prime lens, zoom lens and this list of lenses currently in the market and expected to be released in the future.
* RF 50mm f/1.2L USM
  • RF 85mm F1.2 L USM
  • RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS
  • RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM
  • RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM
  • RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM
  • RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM
  • RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
  • RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
  • RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro
  • RF 28-70mm f/2L USM
  • RF 50-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
  • RF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS
  • RF 100-400mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM.
From the above list, the verity of choices comes in terms of specifications, focal lengths, and even aperture. This list is what happened during the past year and you can imagine what is possible within the next five years, for example

RF 85mm F1.2 L USM
RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS
We will notice that the first lens has a very large aperture and has no competitor in other companies
The other lens has the feature of
Defocus Smoothing
A technique that allows providing a superb improvement in the depth of field and special details in the background or so-called Bokeh
Also supporting what I think is that Canon during the previous two years did not focus on releasing new lenses extensively for the usual DSLR cameras, but only to create and control the market through the lenses of cameras without mirror, and in contrast, Canon plans to maintain the first line of professional photographers of nature and sports by providing a range of lenses for DSLR cameras this year

  • 300mm f/2.8L IS III USM
  • 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM
  • 500mm f/4L IS III USM
  • 800mm f/5.6L IS II USM
Canon plans to launch a new set of CN-E cinematic lenses for cinematic uses. This set will have a new set of upgrades and the ability to deliver a very powerful and sharp image with an 8K sensor, very powerful design and lens enhancements.

  • CN-E 14mm T3.1 L F
  • CN-E 20mm T1.5 L F
  • CN-E 24mm T1.5 L F
  • CN-E 35mm T1.5 L F
  • CN-E 50mm T1.3 L F
  • CN-E 85mm T1.3 L F
  • CN-E 135mm T2.2 L F
I believe that the market in the coming period will witness very strong competition with the temporary control of Nikon company and dominated by Sony and then redirected photographers to the Canon to become the first controlling the market through lenses again, especially that Sony offers lower options with high quality and price This is what the middle class They cannot afford. As for Nikon, it has produced a good range of lenses but unfortunately still targets the category of supporters and lovers of this brand and not focusing on its plans to pull the rug out of other companies
Canon now it is in a truce and I expect the coming back will be strong.
We are waiting for you 

Canon shutter message upon powering off (update) Does NOT appear with native lenses

I just received my RF 35 IS today. Guess what. No warning message. The flap closes immediately and there's no message.

Turns out this message is ONLY when you have the EF to RF adapter attached.

Since there does not appear to be anything different mechanically when the adapter is being used vs. not used, I am puzzled as to why the camera works perfectly as every other camera when native lenses are used.

TURNS OFF INSTANTLY AND SHUTTER PROTECTION FLAP CLOSES INSTANTLY UPON POWER OFF. JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER CAMERAS. =)

YUP.

Is an RF 135mm f/1.4L USM in development? [CR1]

A couple of days ago we posted about an RF 14-21mm f/1.4L and another “crazy” prime lens would be coming as well. A couple of unknown folks have let us know that an RF 135mm f/1.4L USM is in “some kind of development”, possibly alongside an RF 135mm f/1.8L USM.
One of the sources claims that an RF 135mm lens was shown in a roadmap presentation, but no speed or other specifications were shown, though “f/1.4 or f/1.8” was verbally mentioned. However, it was listed as coming in “late 2020+”.
As with anything [CR1], please take this info with a grain of salt.

Camellia

I took some pictures in my yard of the camellia blossoms and closeups of hyacinths, using the non-L 100mm macro f/2.8. My favorite of the bunch was this one taken from the side rather than head on. It was taken close up, but maybe not in what people consider as a real macro range. 183372
