Looking at 80d and 77d

Time to upgrade my T4i. In most all performance respects I have learned the 77d and 80d are alike. Size and weight differences don't matter and neither does weather sealing or video performance. I read the comparisons and probably the one thing that bothers me about the 77d are the comments it is like an upgraded Rebel with a more plastic feel than what the 80d has. The 77d is about a year newer than the 80d and has the Digic 7 processor instead of the 80d Digic 6. I don't know if that makes a performance difference between the two because ultimately, the word is the pictures look the same. In this case, the price makes the difference and I found 77d for $549 and 80d for $739 at *******&. However, I wanted to verify these were USA brand cameras and I learned they were not when I called the store direct. *********** and I jotted down the prices, but I can't find my notes at the moment. The USA models were higher priced, at least $100 more for each, but I think the 77d was about $250 cheaper when comparing the two. Because of this, I was leaning 77d before I even posted here, but over the last month, I've been waffling back and forth. I just wanted to know if there were any revelations or something I can't live without the 80d possessed, otherwise, I'm convinced the 77d is the camera that will suit my generalist picture-taking requirements. However, I've been getting more interested in taking pictures of birds and the 80d is faster all around, but nothing in my mind that will make a big difference, like 960 shots vs 600 shots, 1/8000 vs 1/4000, 7fps vs 6fps, 80d being the first statistic. Also the viewfinder has 100% coverage and brighter in the 80d while the 77d is 95% and dimmer. 77d has Bluetooth, 80d doesn't.

Another dead memory card

I know a lot of people claim that memory cards are so reliable that you do not have to worry about failure, but it still happens. I went outside last night to photograph the lunar eclipse and when I went to look at the photos this morning, the card was dead. Absolutely nothing! Like putting a cardboard cutout into the card reader!

I was shooting with a 7D2 and recording to both cards, the Sandisk CompactFlash card has the images, the Lexar SD card is toast. This is why I like to shoot important events with a dual card setup; the likelihood of card failure may be low, but when it happens you are screwed without a second card.

Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II replacement to have 8K option [CR1]

We’re told that Canon will update the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II in 2019, with NAB 2019 in April being the most logical place to showcase the new camera.
We’re told again that the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III (as we’re going to call it) will launch as a 4K camera, but that there will be an 8K “upgrade” option. What that would entail is unknown at this time.
Canon has admitted they were slow to adopt 4K and that they wouldn’t make the same mistake again. That said, is 8K really ready for mass adoption? Probably not. But a likely high cost, low yield upgrade on a popular camera could be the way to be one of the first few companies with an 8K option for the people that want it.
The same source did say that an RF mount Cinema EOS camera was in development, but likely won’t be part of the 2019 roadmap. Even though the EF/RF adapters are superb, it probably makes more sense to wait until there are more native RF mount lenses.

1DX Mark II dead at 200k

Well it finally happened and far earlier than expected. The mirror failed on my 1DX Mark II with 202k shutter clicks (rated for 400k).

The mirror is totally out of alignment and thus not sending the image to the AF sensors. I can still shoot in MF.

Hopefully CPS can turn this around quick as I’m heading to Denmark for the Cyclocross World Championships at the end of the month. F35C02D9-3F0D-44CE-BD85-BAE4BF1E828C.jpeg

Charging LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries for use in EOS-R

The battery and charger on the left is an extra I have left that was used for my now sold 5D3. The battery and the charger on the right came with the R. I understand we can use LP-E6 on R, and I have had no issues using it on the R so far. However, based on the ratings printed on the back of both the chargers, can any of you verify it is safe to charge either batteries (LP-E6 and LP-E6N) in either of the chargers even though the the Wh or mAh is rated slightly different in both the batteries. Thanks.

Patent: Lots of EF-M zoom optical formulas

Canon continues to work away at EF-M lenses judging by this recent patent application. It looks like they’re working on improved optics for kit zoom lenses, sharper performance and less vignetting are on order.
EF-M Zoom Optical Formulas in Japan Patent Application 2019008235:

EF-M 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6
EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3
EF-M 18-130mm f/3.4-5.6
EF-M 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3
EF-M 15-130mm f/3.5-6.3

We expect a new EOS M body in the coming months and it wouldn’t surprise us to see a new kit zoom announced alongside the camera.

Review: Canon’s new super telephoto lens cases

Canon is shipping their latest super telephoto lenses in a new soft shell case instead of the standard hard trunk we’ve been used to for as long as I can remember. We missed this bit of information during the announcements of the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III and EF 600mm f/4L IS III. We’re actually quite happy to see this.
Nikon uses soft cases with some of their super telephoto lenses like the 200-400mm f/4 and the 300mm f/2.8. They may be doing it with more big lenses, but I haven’t purchased any since the days of owning Lens Rentals Canada.
Whenever I’ve received a new super telephoto lens, I would almost immediately stick the trunk in the dungeon and put my new lens into a...

Patent: Canon 500mm f/4 DO IS and Canon 600mm f/4 DO IS

It seems patent applications for diffractive optic super telephoto lenses is becoming a monthly thing. Canon News has uncovered another patent application showing both a 500mm f/4 DO IS and a 600mm f/4 DO IS example.
Canon showcased a 600mm f/4 DO IS at the Canon Expo back in 2015, and we haven’t really heard anything else about it since. There seems to be a lot of resources being put into DO lenses and yet we only have one available from Canon in the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II.
We predict that the RF mount will get some DO lenses in the future for the obvious reasons of size and weight reduction, which is especially important for a lot of super telephoto shooters.

Patent: Anti static coating for RF lenses

Here’s an interesting new patent application from Canon uncovered by Canon News, it details a new anti-static coating for lens elements. Canon seems to think there is a potential dust issue on the rear element of RF lenses and their close proximity to the image sensor.
The solution? Create an anti-static coating for the rear element of RF lenses so less dust adheres to the lens that could potentially end up on the image sensor during shooting.
From Japan Patent Application 2019-008147 (Google translated)
When distance becomes short, the influence concerned may become for example, less minor [ even if garbage has adhered to the lens in the case of an interchangeable lens, if the distance from an imaging surface to a lens is a comparatively long lens, the influence of the garbage to the image quality of the photoed image is minor, but ]. For example, garbage...

Hand strap for R

Hello,
after some years with a 6D, I upgraded it for the new R. I like very much the camera, but the hand strap I had in my 6D (the Canon E1 + a custom Arca plate) does not fit comfortably into the 6D. I'm currently using a generic plate, but I don't think it is the plate but the camera + strap.
Has anyone found a comfortable solution?
Thanks!

2018 Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award Shortlist

Hello Everyone,
I found this article interesting: almost all 25 images were shot with obsolete, archaic technology: Canon and Nikon DSLR's:)
2018 Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award Shortlist
Especially number 3, the owls family portrait: Canon 1D Mark IV !!! How dare they give any awards to photos with such a low dynamic range, no-IBIS camera!;)
Luckily they posted one that saved the day, taken with a mirrorless Sony (number 21):)
Cheers:)

Quick look at throughput over last 14 years and predicting that a big change is coming

Does Canon's relative throughput trend affect you?

  • Don't really care, as the current throughput is adequate for what I do

    Votes: 7 35.0%
  • It's a concern, but I'm confident Canon will fix it shortly

    Votes: 3 15.0%
  • It's a concern and weighs on my choices

    Votes: 3 15.0%
  • It's a big, hairy concern, perhaps the dominant weakness of the Canon system

    Votes: 1 5.0%
  • What's a throughput?

    Votes: 6 30.0%

In 14 years, from the launch of the 1D-S Mark II, Canon's flagship full frame megapixels has gone up only 25 percent, from about 16mp to about 20mp with the 1DX2. Viewfinder frame rate increased from 4.5 fps to 14 fps. Total throughput (using framerate x megapixels) increased from 72mp/sec to 280mp/sec; about a factor of four over 14 years. That's an annual compound throughput increase rate of 10.2 percent.

Current throughput deficit: Sony A9 has 1.7 times the throughput; A7R3 has 1.5 times the throughput; Nikon D850 has 1.2 times; and the Nikon Z7 has 1.5 times.

The introduction of the R mount appears to have exacerbated this, siphoning off processor resources for various functions, giving the R camera 3.1 times worse throughput (assuming you want autofocus between shots for moving targets) than the Canon 1DX2. That means the Nikon Z7 has about 4.5 times the throughput of the R. The Nikon Z7 has 4 times the throughput, perhaps the most comparable camera to the Canon R in other areas.

This will matter to some people, and not matter to others. The Seattle DPReview crowd taking urban shots at their leisure will be less affected by that difference. The action/wildlife pros would be most affected. Interestingly, the latter is Canon's most loyal market right now, and the former appears to be their least loyal.

Something is going to change. My hope is that it's a big leap in throughput from Canon, and not a repositioning to less of an action profile. Including a poll to see if others are thinking about this.

Sigma updates compatibility notice for the Canon EOS R

We would like to share the results of our further investigations regarding the operating conditions of the Canon “EOS R” and SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for Canon mount.
When SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses in the current product lineup, listed below, are used in combination with the Canon “EOS R” and their “Mount Adapter EF-EOS R” or “Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R”, both AF and AE operate without any issues. Furthermore, lenses which incorporate Optical Stabilizer (OS) will work with the OS function properly in effect.

In addition, when the Digital Lens Optimizer is switched [OFF], but “Peripheral illumination correction”, “Chromatic aberration correction” and “Distortion correction”, located within the in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function is switched [ON], the appropriate corrections can be achieved in accordance with the optical characteristics of each lens. This is applicable to DG and DC lenses from Contemporary, Art and Sports line listed below which were...

I Did It

I bit the bullit and ordered the R and the adapter with the control ring. I'm leaving for Tanzania in 2 weeks and will be taking it as a companion to the 7DMII.My husband just checked the shutter count on my 7DMII and it's about 350 K so it's living on borrowed time! Hope it makes it until Canon decides what's going to take its place until they can get their mirrorless line able to cope with that type of shooting.

Paper size oppportunity

Shooting JPEG on a Mod60D usually gives me a 72x48 image. This reduces nicely to a 8X12 print but finding legal size (8.5X14) photo paper leaves me frustrated. Neither Canon, Epson, Staples, etc. carry that size and searching the web suggests they don't offer the solultion. The only place I've found is Red River Paper. Does anyone know of another source?
I hate to use a 13X19 sheet although lately I've been printing 8X12 two-up to conserve paper. Thanks for the help.

Quiet APS-C DSLRs?

The shutter/mirror actions of my 20D, 60D and SL1 are pretty loud. Are there any Canon APS-C DSLR models that are appreciably quieter?

I know some of the full-frame models, like my 6D, are much better-behaved in that respect. But for this question I'm interested specifically in APS-C. Also not interested in mirrorless (M or R) here - just APS-C DSLRs.

Those of you who've had experience with multiple Canon APS-C DSLRs, what say ye?
