Did you get/treat yourself to anything new during the holidays?

I treated myself to a used 7D MarkII. Camera store knocked off the price of used gear after Christmas Day, and, to my surprise, was even less than the website price, which was lower than the week before. (On the other hand they didn't give me much for my 60D). It was so unexpected I decided not to buy a used 200 F2.8L Good news is it has less than 10K on the shutter. Bad news is I'll be asking the forum lots of foolish questions on how to set it up.....
Was December good to you?

Ended: Vote on your favourite new gear of 2018

This is the last day of voting in our “Best of 2018” polls. While cameras weren’t the star of the year, lenses certainly were from Canon and other manufacturers this past year.

You can vote in the three polls below. We’ll be announcing the results tomorrow.

After some time what is the field report of EF100-400 Mk II?

I had the 100-400 Mk I for a few years before getting the new one. Does anyone other than me miss the balance that the old 100-400 had at 400mm? You held the front of the lens to focus and that I have found gave better balance than the new one which you have to hold closer, and effectively your left hand acts as a pivot rather than a stabiliser.

85mm f1.4 IS L

I received a loan from CPS for this lens. I went to visit family for Christmas and had it on my camera the whole week, even though I had my other lenses with me. It is really a sweet lens. The AF is fast, but as I was taking pictures of fast moving children under the age of 5 most of the time, even with my camera it was difficult to nail focus on them at an f stop faster than 2. Oh, and cats, they are hard to focus on when they like to bolt away. Cats are like an addiction, they just have to be photographed. The lens is very sharp. Not sure about the benefit of IS, but maybe it really does help. I've noticed some green CA fringing.

It makes great portraits too. Although it is a tad long unless you have room to back up.

I'm a zoom guy, but these primes are pretty fun.

Canon R USB charging - does it work off power banks?

As per the title, does the Canon R allow charging off a USB power bank, or does it have to have ac power through the Canon power block?
I've seen some posts of people being able to use MacBook chargers also, but these need to be plugged in to ac power too, as far as I'm aware.

If it does work through USB banks, can it be charged while running (like Sony) or only when the camera is off? (like Nikon)

Patent: 500mm and 600mm diffractive optic lenses

Here is another in a long line of diffractive optics patents we’ve seen from Canon over the last couple of years. Since the Canon EXPO in 2015, we’ve all been wondering where the EF 600mm f/4 DO IS lens is, a lens we don’t think is ever coming at this point. A lot has changed over the last 3 years, and we expect any new DO super telephoto lens to be for Canon’s new RF mount.
This latest USPTO patent showcases both a 500mm and 600mm optical formula. As Canon News points out, this patent shows Canon moving the lens elements closer to the camera body to improve balance. This is the same sort of design we saw in the brand new EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III and EF 600mm f/4L IS III lenses.
Example 1:

Focal Length: 487.49mm
F-Number: 4.12
Half angle of view: 2.54º
Image height: 21.64mm
Total lens length: 409.74mm
Backfocus: 98.42mm...

Ended: Your favourite new Canon camera of 2018

2018 was definitely the “year of the lens” for Canon as well as the third party manufacturers. Canon announced nine lenses, their most since 2012, including 7 L lenses, which is the most Canon has ever announced in one calendar year.
Canon camera announcements were a different story. There has been no “professional” camera announcement from Canon since the EOS 5D Mark IV in 2016. The EOS 6D Mark II was the only full frame camera announced in 2017, a year which brought us oddities like the EOS 77D and the PowerShot G1 X Mark III.

2018 only saw 2 ILC cameras that brought about any sort of excitement. The EOS M50, which...

Patent: Canon RF 90mm f/2.8L IS Macro & RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro

Hi-Lows-Note via Northlight Images has uncovered a patent for an RF mount macro lens. The optical formula is for an RF 90mm f/2.8L IS Macro. Northlight points out that the image stabilization group (L12) is further forward than the normal positioning for IS groups.

Ended: Your favourite new third party lens of 2018

Yesterday’s poll (you can still vote in that one) covered Canon’s 2018 lens offerings, today we’re asking what your favourite third-party lens of 2018 is. We have limited the selection of the contenders to autofocus lenses for the Canon EF mount from Sigma, Tamron and Rokinon (Samyang).

Even if none of these lenses suits your personal shooting needs, you can still vote for the lens you think is the best designed, hits a need in the market or just seems the coolest.
We will announce the results on Monday, December 31, 2018.

Canon 7DII performing weirdly after resetting

Canon 7DII with Canon 100-400mm II
Canon batteries with at least 50 percent capacity
On tripd
SanDisk SD cards

I had been shooting wildlife all morning at a local-ish NWR and went over to the closed visitor's center to photograph song birds. Throughout the morning I was having no problems smashing the shutter to capture snow geese lifting off en masse.

At the songbird location, Decided to reset all settings to factory because I don't have a good grasp yet of all of the AF options by heart (will re-watch Canon and others AF instructions) and wanted to default back to center AF quickly without going through all the options.

Firmware is 1.04

After resetting:

Shooting RAW, using high speed continuous, the camera would go along for several frames, then, shut-down. The top LCD screen went blank.

I turned the camera off, then, on, and the problem returned. I did the on/off dance multiple times.

Appreciate pointers. Thanks

The RF 35mm f1.8 STM: This lens makes Full Frame to a travel option...

Shortly after my New England trip -where I made the road trip with the EF-M 32mm f1.4 - my first RF lens was delivered: The RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM. Therefore the next Idea was to take this lens with me - together with the EF 85mm f1.4 L IS USM and the Milvus 15mm f2.8. Quite a nice combo....

Well the 971 g of the EOS R with the RF 35mm f1l8 is pretty handy.... It feels close to nothing - in comparison to the 5D4 with the 35mm f1.4L II and its 1735 g....

I took the combo with me to Asia a couple of days ago. And it is a very interesting option. For more detailed informations you may look at my blog.

But maybe you are interested in my verdict as well:

Traveling full format in a small package is just fun. The EOS R with the RF 35mm f1.8 is very enjoyable - just according to its light weight and its pretty decent performance.

But there is lot more to say about this lens.

  1. The image quality is pretty decent.
    1. It is tack sharp wide open
    2. The bokeh is pretty pleasent
    3. Flare is pretty much controled
    4. Chromatic aberrations are small
    5. But a few direct comparison shots are showing that the 35mm f1.4 L has more to offer - but for 3x more money - what is fair
  2. Autofocus ist quick, silent and accurate
  3. OIS gives a 5 stops according to Canon - my slowest handheld was 1/8th second accidentally....
  4. Weight and size are really small and lightweight - the lens is much smaller that the Zeiss Batis for Sony E-Mount - which is maybe the only direct competitor on the market.
  5. And due to the 0.5 magnification factor it is delivering unique images no other 35mm Full Frame lens is offering - as fare as I know.
I do hope that Canon will release -beside their technology demonstrating lenses like the RF 55mm f 1.2L- similar travel glass like an RF 85mm f1.8 IS STM.... or a smaller 14/15mm f2.8 lens - but here we can live with 3rd party like Samyang - who hopefully bring out something useful for RF as well.

From then on traveling Full Format will become a no brainer...

Today the EOS R and the RF 35mm f1.8 are a great travel companion. It is close to the EOS M5 with the 32mm f1.4 but it tops it. The M5 is the most minimalistic travel companion, but the R is more versatile....

Ducks at the Cincinnati Zoo

I took these photos in about 1.5 hours at the Cincinnati zoo two days before Christmas. I used a Canon 1DX Mark II with an 800mm lens attached to a Wimberley gimbal head. As the light changed quickly as the birds moved around, I did not use my favorite manual exposure, but instead opted for Auto ISO with manual aperture and shutter speed and EC assigned to the SET button to make it quick an simple to alter the exposure. Exposure set to produce the first blinkies in the highlights while shooting RAW files. I used back-button focus, but assigned single AF focusing to the AF-On button and a group of active AF points to the star button so I could quickly change my metering pattern when needed. www.gerlachnaturephoto.com

First up, vote for your favourite new lens from Canon in 2018! (Poll at the bottom of the article)
A few of the lenses in the poll haven’t shipped as of yet, but with Canon’s ability to make killer L, and super telephoto lenses, I think it’s safe to assume the performance of all these lenses will be...

Sony A7III and the Tamron 28-75

My first-hand experience is that the picture quality is indistinguishable from the Canon 5D4 and the 24-70 L.
There is a lot more that can be dug out of the shadows in the Sony RAWs. The eye focus is magical when it works.
You can charge it through the USB port. It actually sends pictures to Mac and IPad. wirelessly.
I have chosen only to send .jpg shots. Problem with Android connection. With iPad it just works.
Sony has resolved the problem with the battery life.
I like the handling of the Canon more than the Sony but that's because of what I am used to.

I do not miss the wide end so the 28mm is just fine for me. The autofocus is fast and accurate.
I find that the Tamron lens is a real value lens. Only a long time experience will tell if I am right or not.

In short: Both cameras are better than you are. At 2000 dollars the A7III is a bargain.
Will I keep the Sony?
I really do not know. The sensor and the eye focus really make a difference.
Magic aside, the results are equal.
All depends on my ability to learn the logic of Sony. Thus far, I am positively impressed.
Other than that, I got the Rokinon 35mm f/2.8 as a walkaround lens. It is light and compact. Good value.
The Rokinon 100mm manual focus macro is very sharp. The tests say there is nothing wrong with it. Seems legit.
