Add "lens" gallery for teleconverters?

The lens galleries are divided into Canon fixed lens, Canon Zoom lens, and the same for third party. I was thinking it would be nice to have a new tab added for teleconverters (aka extenders). Since there are so few I don't think we need full tabs for Canon and third party (like the lens galleries). We can just list each model (Canon or other brand) within the main tab.

I know people (myself included) will post images taken with teleconverters under the gallery for the lens on which they were used. I just thought it would be handy to have these separated so we can see how well teleconverters perform with a variety of lenses. Thoughts?

OSX now supports viewing EOS R raw files right in the folder... sort of

The latest version of OSX Mojave now has support for raw files from the EOS R, allowing you to view previews of the photos right in the folder. To get this to work on my machine, I had to first upgrade to Mojave, then go back and update the version of OSX again. Only the very latest version seems to work.

However, I noticed that when I used the "gallery view" where the individual photos are strung out along the bottom of the window and the currently selected photo is displayed larger above them, it doesn't actually display the photo larger. It just sits there with a gray spinny wheel as if it's trying to load the photo preview forever.

Well, I guess it's better than nothing. Hopefully they fix that. However, changing to icon view and blowing up the icon size to the point where you can get a sense of the photos does work.

5D Mark III repair cost

A friend of mine is trying to sell his 5D Mark III. It's in excellent condition other than the fact that it's got 500k actuations on the shutter and the mode dial is stuck in M.
I'm thinking about buying it as a backup body and would like to get the mode dial fixed.

If I send it in to Canon they'll bill me for the quote, that's why I thought I'd ask here first.

As far as I know, Canon automatically replaces the shutter once the estimated shutter life is exceeded. Looks like a new 5D Mark III shutter is about $250.
What about the mode dial though? What should I expect? $200, $500, $1000 even? I believe they'll have to swap out the entire top part of the camera. The camera has been on the market for a few years now, so I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem and got it fixed. Just need an estimated value to evaluate whether it's worth spending money on or not.

Canon EOS R body with more than 75mp on the horizon [CR2]

We’ve speculated recently that Canon will not be releasing next iterations for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R, and instead will move the high megapixel cameras to the EOS R line.
A few more people have told us that this will indeed be the case and that an EOS R camera with slightly more than 75mp is in development. This camera could appear sometime in the 2nd half of 2019 we’re told. Though an exact announcement date is a long way from being decided.
One source added that the high megapixel EOS R will come once 4 or 5 more native RF mount lenses are announced, with one of the new lenses being “the best landscape lens in the Canon lineup”.
There are no more imaging announcements in 2018, but early 2019 should see the PowerShot and EOS DSLR lineup getting new additions, and a bit later another EOS R camera body, though the next EOS R body is expected to be “entry level”.
More to come…

EOS R - Interface; 15 minute first impressions.

Having read an internet and a half worth of opinions on what one would think is the worst camera to ever ship from Japan, I went down to the local best buy and tried out the EOS R on display: following are my impressions.

-On/Off Switch Wheel - Yes, it seems like this space could be better used. But for a mode dial? Nah. How about a power indicator to free space from the main LCD?

-Mode Selection - Mash the Mode button and roll the wheel, simple enough .

-AF point selection - This is a big one.

- Touch Screen - Forget it, slow, not accurate enough and needs a lot of fine tuning

- There is no joystick - I've had a 5D3/5D4 for 5 years and never once used a bloody joystick to select an AF point. No fuss here.

- Direction pad - Not fast enough for point selection

- Use the 2 wheels for horizontal / vertical movement , bingo! Works perfect.

-Sadly, for Auto AF selection us canon guys dont have anything comparable to the D8x0.. will we ever?

-Switching between video and stills - Mash the info button while selecting modes - simple enough

- For the amount of video modes, this exposes why the mode wheel is now gone. And the lack of a hardware connect allows additional modes to be added via firmware perhaps?

-The M. Fn Bar. The most controversial part of the EOS R interface. For this model it was set to ISO, and it just takes too much effort to get moving, and is too unpredictable once working. Maybe it can be programmed to something else but another dial or buttons would be a better use of space.

The M. Fn bar really does seem to be a fly in the custard here but otherwise everything is very well and nicely thought out. As I was walking up to the display, someone was buying an EOS R and a bunch of other stuff for themself. At this price its not a casual purchase, and seems to be a promising sign of the R's acceptance.

Here's hoping Canon has something good coming for the future mirrorless RF bodies! This first step could have been much worse. Canon over delivered on lenses and under delivered on the body, exactly the opposite of Sony.

Canon EOS R for Astrophotography

I need some help. I have searched all over the internet to find out some information about how the EOS R handles Astrophotography, but I cant really find any technical information or reviews. I shoot with the 6D and it is still awesome with the night sky. But I wonder if the R handles the stars and milky way even better. I would appreciate it if anyone has seen some reviews or has some experience with it out in the wild. thanks.

Proper grease for lubricating lens internals

The zoom ring on my 70-200 2.8 feels just a little gritty. Looking at the lens rental teardown of the lens, it looks like it's pretty easy to disassemble the lens to the point of getting the zoom ring off to clean/lubricate it. The thing is, I can't find a definitive answer anywhere online as to what the proper grease is to lubricate the moving parts. Does anyone know what Canon recommends for this? Some sort of lithium or teflon grease?

Patent: Canon EF-M 10mm f/2.8 Fisheye

Japan Patent Application 2018185386 showcases an optical formula for an EF-M 10mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens. The short backfocus distance tells us it’s for a mirrorless application, and we’re pretty sure there will NOT be dedicated APS-C lenses for the EOS R system.
Is a fisheye needed for the EOS M lineup? Probably not, but if priced right, it could be a solid niche lens for the system.

600mm options

I shoot cars at the track and just wrapped up shooting my first season using a 100-400 II + 1.4x III TC + 80D. I just sold the 80D and upgraded to a 5D mark IV. With the 100-400 II + TC + 80D I was able to get close to 900mm. Occasionally 900mm wasn't enough. Now that I've upgraded to full frame, I'm down to 560mm using the 100-400 II + TC.

The problem here: I do need more than 560mm. So I've been looking into getting one of the three different Canon 600mm lenses.
They seem to be going for
EF600mm f/4L USM: $3500
EF600mm f/4L IS USM: $4000
EF600mm f/4L IS II USM: $8000

I can't afford an $8000 lens right now.
I can rent the IS mark I version for $100 for the weekend locally or the IS mark II for $150 for the weekend.

If I decide to spend a few grand on a 600mm tele, I think I'd most likely go for the IS mark I version. Would I shoot myself in the foot by doing this?
It takes about an hour to drive to the rental place and then an hour back, too. Unfortunately, they don't ship these lenses for fraud prevention reasons. So add $50 to the rental bill for gas.

Keeping all of this in mind, would I be better off just renting them for the weekend every time?
We're talking about 10 weekends each season.

Black Friday: Calibrate Your Display for as low as $99.99!

Are you calibrating your monitor? If not, what are you waiting for?
Until a photo is printed, the monitor is its “frame.” It is the basis for your assessment – the window into your image file. We’re often asked, “Is it even necessary to calibrate a monitor? The images already look really good.” If you are working in isolation and view images exclusively on your display, this may seem sufficient. But those who edit their images on an uncalibrated monitor with a color cast are unwittingly building color errors into the image file, based on inaccuracies on the monitor. If you then edit large quantities of image data in batch processing mode using this incorrect basis for assessment, you are destroying your image files – particularly if you don’t create copies or if you don’t use the RAW format as the starting point for your workflow.

Only when you choose to display your images elsewhere (different display, photo album, fine art print, etc.) will you realize that the wrong...

Arsenal Smart Camera Assistant for Canon

Does anyone have experience using this gadget Arsenal Smart Camera Assistant? My issue is that I "pre-ordered" one for a birthday gift. The pre-order was placed in September with a October delivery date. It's now late November and nothing from Arsenal about my order. I've emailed twice and the response is "Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Due to heavy support ticket volume, response times may be delayed. Arsenal typically replies in a few days and we are committed to responding to every inquiry received. We appreciate your patience". I've received the same message on phone calls to the number provided. Now I believe it's a scam but I need to confirm. They did take my money. Thanks for any help or guidance I can get.

Samyang to announce XP 35mm f/1.2 soon

It looks like Samyang is going to announce another very fast prime lens, this time in the form of an XP 35mm f/1.2.
The XP line of lenses from Samyang are manual focus, but they’re also considered the brands premium line.
Currently, the XP series from Samyang consists of the following lenses:

XP 14mm f/2.4
XP 50mm f/1.2
XP 85mm f/1.2

The exact announcement date for the XP 35mm f/1.2 is unknown, but expect it some time in the next week or two.

New Sony sensors - faster frame-rates and a 16-bit APS-C sensor

Looks like some faster sensors all around but the 11, 12, 14, 16 bit ADC IMX571BQR (26MP @ 6.8 fps & 16b or faster framerates at lower bit depth/crop) looks like a pretty versatile chip that could allow some boost in raw data manipulation (multishot noise reduction? extended low ISO performance?).
Not sure if full well capacity is adequate to benefit from more than 14 bit ADC anyway ..

here's the 2018 sensor lineup:

EOS R vs 80D

Hello all!

I suppose I consider myself a candidate for the EOS R, as I would be upgrading from the 80D. I mostly do bird portraits with my 100-400 Mkii. I feel the focus speed and the noise on the 80D are my limiters. I have been reading all the user impressions and feel the EOS R would be a good step up:

- fast and accurate focus
- excellent FF sensor
- smaller and lighter than other FF DSLRs (I shoot handheld, and enjoy walking around with the camera)

For those who have used both, what are your thoughts comparing the R to the 80D?

For reference, here is a selection of my favorite shots:

Comments are appreciated!

EOS R and RF50 in dark warehouse

Ok I wanted to test my R and RF 50mm even more by arranging a shoot in an old warehouse at night. I had my Profoto B10 with beauty dish and a Profoto A1. Never used any modeling lights.
I was impressed by how the EVF was bright enough for my to view my subject like it was lit up inside and establish focus. That was actually exciting to see for the first time. There were times I could barely see his face with my eye till I looked through the viewfinder and bam there he was. I shot all photos at 1.2 and out of 128 taken I have 2 completely out of focus. I will be honest and REALLY REALLY WISH it had the eye af like the A7IIIl
BUT I compared shots where it done face recognition compared to shots I used the lcd to slide focus on his eye and I see no difference. So I am starting to thing face detect finds the eye automatically?

The upcoming RF mount wide angle f/2.8L zoom will be wider than 16mm [CR2]

Canon has already mentioned that a trio of f/2.8L zoom lenses is coming in 2019 for the RF mount. It’s pretty obvious that we should expect some kind of “holy trinity” of lenses such as an RF 16-35mm f/2.8L. RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS and an RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.
We’re being told that the wide angle lens for the RF “holy trinity” will be wider than 16mm. Both an RF 12-35mm f/2.8L and an RF 14-35mm f/2.8L have been developed for testing.

We have seen a patent for an RF 14-21mm f/1.4L, but don’t expect such a lens to surface in 2019. Included in the same patent is an RF 16-35mm f/2.8L and an RF 12-20mm f/2L. So we think it’s possible that a 12-35mm f/2.8L will what wins out.
Nikon will be coming with a 14-30mm f/4 S and we think Canon will definitely want to keep its lenses the most impressing in the full frame mirrorless world. As such, we expect them to a bit faster and a bit more extreme on the wide end...

Review: Canon EOS R by DPReview

DPReview has completed their review of the Canon EOS R, and we see they find the camera a mixed bag. It appears the reviewers greatest issues with the EOS R body is the ergonomics of the camera. The EOS R is nothing like anything else Canon has ever released in that regard.
The camera definitely does take some getting used to, and we suspect a coming firmware update is going to add some features as well as fix some of the issues users are having.
From DPReview:
With a 30MP sensor, fantastic color reproduction and on-sensor autofocus, the EOS R can produce some beautiful photographs with pinpoint-accurate focus. But it’s Canon’s first mirrorless full-frame camera, and in many ways, it shows. The ergonomics feel unfinished, and for the same or less money, you can find better video, more dynamic range and faster burst speeds elsewhere. But we have to admit that Canon’s new RF lenses are simply spectacular, and at this time, the EOS R is the only way to get to use them...
