EOS R bugs

Do we have a thread for EOS R bugs yet? A couple things I've found so far...

In image review, choosing magnify to actual size based on your selected AF point just flat out doesn't work. It always magnifies to the center of the photo, regardless of where your AF point was. This is a little frustrating. I was using singe point AF.

The camera got a little glitchy on me when using the 50mm f1.0L lens with the control ring EF adapter. Yeah, ok, it's a rare lens, but it shouldn't cause the camera to glitch out. At one point, it would not move the focus point to somewhere else on the screen when I tapped a spot on the screen, this was when using the screen as a live view shooting mode. Then, when I raised the camera to my eye, the EVF only showed the scene in front of me. All of the info that should have been overlaid on the scene in the EVF was not there. Turning the camera off then back on seemed to resolve this.

Sony A7iii or Pentax K1 - The Choice is Near

I've been waiting on Canon for several years now to come out with a FF Camera with a 5 axis IBIS system specifically for shooting my large collection of vintage lenses. I'm tired of waiting as it looks like they'll never pull through for me with this one feature for me....

The EOS-R would of been perfect if it included a 5 axis IBIS system!!!!!!

I love Canon and will always use their gear but I am not loyal to them (I pay them not vice-versa!).

Camera gear is a tool and I need a FF tool with IBIS to get the best out of my vintage lens collection.....(I'm not as steady as I used to be now that age is creeping up on me).

I'm debating on the Pentax K1 or the Sony A7iii for the tool in my kit for all my Vintage Lenses. Tough call to make considering neither has a full articulating screen with full touch ability......

The Sony is a bit small for my hands, a battery grip is not out of the question.....
I'm leaning more towards the Pentax K1 as it would be a bit cheaper in the long run....

any advice out there? or other alternatives I'm not thinking of?????

EOS R, there seems to be no way to disable the display for shooting?

Got my hands on a new EOS R. Seems ok, but I'm concerned that there appears to be no way to effectively disable the display for live view shooting. I want to use only the viewfinder for shooting, and then review images on the display, like a DSLR. The closest thing I can find to doing this is to set the display timeout to 15 seconds. This way when I remove my eye from the viewfinder, the screen switches on, but then goes off after 15 seconds. the drawback is, once the display goes to sleep, when I bring the camera back up to my eye, the viewfinder takes longer to start displaying again as opposed to if the display had not gone to sleep.

You can also set a dedicated button to make the display go to sleep, but this has the same problem with lag when you bring the camera back up to your eye. Setting a button to manually switch between the viewfinder and display also seems cumbersome because you end up with the menus or image review popping up in the viewfinder.

Sigma announces new 56mm f/1.4 DC DN lens for Sony E mount and mFT

https://www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/contemporary/c_56_14/

... not for EF-M mount. (n)

But at least some "living proof" that an [presumably] "optically decent" APS-C 56mm/1.4 lens would easily be possible within typical EF-M size parameters (61.6mm outer diameter, max. 58mm filter thread).

Lens construction 10 elements in 6 groups
Number of diaphragm blades 9 (Rounded diaphragm)
Minimum focusing distance 50cm / 19.7in.
Maximum magnification ratio 1:7.4
Filter size ø55mm
Dimensions (diameter x length) ø66.5mm x 59.5mm / ø2.6in. x 2.3in.
Weight 280g/ 9.9oz.

Canon, where art thou?

Computational Photography in late 2018 ... as implemented in Google Pixel 3 smartphone

just came across this interesting write-up on dpreview re. state of computational photography, as implemented on latest Google smartphone Pixel 3.
https://www.dpreview.com/articles/7...s-the-boundaries-of-computational-photography

I certainly don't share 100% of the hype for the specific product. And up to now ;-) I still prefer "dedicated camera device with lots of ground glass in front of some decently large image sensor" for my purposes.

BUT ... progress in computational photography seems to happen even faster than I thought. I fully welcome this and am hoping to get an "ultra-compact, fully-capable, solid state camera" ... some day.

Generally speaking, I am all for making the mundane/technical aspects of photography easier, more supportive and intuitive so I can focus my attention on the "creative side": composition, light, moment, subject interaction and "access to locations and events not open to the public" ... to capture and create the images I want.

Not sure whether traditional camera makers and their octagenarian-stud boards are really on top of these developments or whether they will again just sit around like lame ducks, doing nothing and watch their "traditional camera and lens" business go down the drain - like last 10 years, when smartphones totally swallowed their sh*tty compact digital cameras. Interesting times for sure.

Lens mount “brassing” on 300mm f/2.8L II

I noticed yesterday that the lens mount on my Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II is showing some wear. Specifically, the chrome coating has worn down to the brass underlay.

I also noticed some tiny brass filings around the pin hole where the camera body locks into the lens. I’ve since cleaned the filings out with a dampened Q-tip.

My questions to everyone are:

1) Would this issue of “brassing” warrant sending the lens in for repair? And, if so...

2) Does anyone have an estimate of cost for a lens mount replacement?

Thanks.

Patent: 360 degree camera from Canon

LetsGoDigital has found a Canon patent application with the USPTO for a 360-degree camera, the patent was published on October 4, 2018
The device has 8 cameras that can zoom independently of each other and will overlap each other to make image stitching a breeze. The camera can capture full 360-degree images as well as panoramics.
The camera also comes with a built-in tripod for easy placement anywhere. The device can also be controlled remotely via a computer or smartphone.
It also looks like the camera has various lighting options built-into the orb-shaped body.
This is a pretty detailed patent for what appears to be a product close to production. If we’re going to see this type of camera, I would think CES in January will be the place Canon might show it off.

Canon EOS R trouble with third-party lenses

So I just got my Canon EOS R yesterday and was very excited... Until I tested it.
I tried to use my Tamron 70-200 on it and it just crashed. But I've had the same issue with this lens on my 80D in live view, so I think that I will not be able to solve this problem. What's even worse for me is that my most used lens, my Sigma 35mm f1.4 doesn't work on the EOS R. Circles appear on the screen when I mount this lens on the camera and even when I view the photos on my computer, the ring is still there. I am using the standard adapter. Anyone else with the same issue/a way how to fix it?

Thanks!

Ready to buy the EOS R, when . . .

Canon Releases a native R-mount Pancake, preferably something on the wider end. With such a small lenses, the thickness of an adapter just isn't right, so it must be a NATIVE pancake! :) This will replace my very unwanted X100T.

Lots of definite head scratchers here from Canon, but the intent is clear. The lenses shown thus far are just too good this soon. What other mirrorless system arrived to market with such tantalizing lenses at launch? Its like Canon laughing at the armchair sensor engineers by merely offering stellar glass. (Not saying thats the best idea either, but hey.)

I listened too closely to the internet concerning the 5Dmk4, it IS a major step up from the 5Dmk3 for everyday usability and really keeps itself together when pushed into the nonideal. And it really tames that 50 F1.2 puts it to work, love that lens even more now.

Happy shooting!

Is the Canon EOS 5DS series to be replaced by a mirrorless camera? [CR1]

We’ve been told a couple of times in very vague terms that Canon may be looking to replace the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R with a higher megapixel EOS R series camera.
The high megapixel 5DS series from Canon is a niche product in the lineup and it would make some sense to move this series over to the EOS R side of things. I don’t believe the average 5DS user would be all that bothered by adapting EF lenses, especially with the adapter options available to EOS R shooters. Landscape shooters will likely love the circular polarizer and ND filter adapters available from Canon.
We believe that a native wide angle zoom will be coming sometime in 2019, and that would help with the transition to the EOS R system for shooters that don’t want to go the adapter router.
Take this with a grain of salt, as I’m not sure Canon will be ready to kill off a DSLR line this soon in favour of an infant full frame mirrorless system. That said, I have no information about how well the EOS 5DS series of cameras...

AEB on EOS R

I just read the manual for the EOS R. I was disappointed to see that AEB is only for 3 shots. That’s a throwback to my old 5d2.

I AEB my landscapes with a 5 shot burst from +2 to -2 routinely. I have found that especially with moving water you never know which one will hit it. You could adjust the exposure comp and still cover the range with 6 shots, like I used to. But I was sure glad to not have to do this anymore with the 5d3 and 4.

Otherwise, it looks like a great landscape camera. I preordered the control ring adapter, and was going to go for the body too soon.

It may make sense to wait a few months until firmware is updated, price drops a bit, and maybe details of the next one will emerge.

Can’t wait to hear how people like it!

Canon 5Dmk4 corrupted files problem

Hi all , just took delivery of a lovely new 5D4 and gone to work testing it out ...

Dismayed to find a handful of shots with massive colour banding and pieces missing and never come across this before with any of my 5d series so need some help/advice as to whether there is a fault with the camera or something else.

I have been able to replicate the issue on differenct CF cards and through different software DPP PS etc so not sure if it can be them.

It is happening whilst using high speed mode. When i put the card back in the camera the image seems fine , on the pc its not ...

Any advice appreciated ...

Andrew

Canon EOS 7D Mark II listed as discontinued, but no reason for excitement

A couple of people have written in about the Canon EOS 7D Mark II being listed as discontinued at major retailers. Unfortunately, this is not a sign of an imminent replacement.
While the Canon EOS 7D Mark II body only is indeed discontinued, this was to make room for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II with the W-E1 Wi-Fi adapter, which has taken the place of the EOS 7D Mark II body only purchase option.
So while a Canon EOS 7D Mark III is coming, we don’t think we’ll see it for at least another  6 months. We haven’t received any suggestions of a replacement being imminent.
