Canon RF Supertelephoto Lenses with built-in Extenders Appear in Latest Patent

In this patent application (2025-028297), Canon discusses super-telephoto prime lenses with built-in teleconverters. Unlike normal teleconverters, which you add to the end of the lens and the extender attaches between the lens and the camera, these insert optical elements inside the lens itself.

Third-party LP-E6P Batteries...

...are now hitting the market from suppliers that I have purchased from in previous years (the following screen grab is from Amazon USA):

By my own lazy count I have purchased at least a couple of backup batteries (from all three of the above suppliers) for at least ten different cameras (including two point-and-shoot, three DSLR and five mirrorless Canons)...with, I guess, mostly positive results for most use cases.

Currently, the fan-less and ethernet-less grip for the R5MkII is more-or-less permanently attached to its body, mostly because of its ability to house an additional battery--if anyone has figured out why my R5MkII seems to consume power at quite rapid rates...let me know.

Weather is warming up, and in some situations I can imagine needing backup batteries for the two Canon-branded batteries that now reside inside the grip.

I found this...

...on CR but haven't seen much on the Neewer, Wasabi or Kastar versions of the LP-E6P batteries--but I'm still looking.

Of course there are worries about third-party battery usage and damage to the camera itself...so I'm a bit conservative jumping in until more reviews are available.

EDIT:

...missed this one (for the Neewer R5 batteries):

CP+ 2025 Highlights: The Cameras and Lenses of 2025

CP+, held in Yokohama, Japan, every February and early March, is the largest camera-related show that occurs now. Photokina used to be it for photography, so much so, that camera and lens releases were often released in August and early September just to get ready for the Photokina buzz. But for reasons beyond my pay grade, Photokina decided to do a series of weird moves that killed it as a trade show. RIP.

Melbourne in March: birding tips?

2I2A7069.jpg

2I2A7100.jpg

I am visiting Melbourne (primarily Box Hill area) for a week in March and will have plenty of time in afternoons to spend with R5 + 100-400ii + 1.4x. Wondering if there any non-obvious ideas the locals can share. In particular:

1. Is my setup mostly fine for casual pictures of local birds, or would I benefit from renting something like RF 200-800? If so, where in Melbourne I could rent it as a tourist?

2. Which parks (or other areas) would you especially recommend? Is it allowed to feed birds in the parks?

3. Anything (apart from drop bears, obviously) I should worry about?

I plan to use public transit, but can rent a car if needed.

Canon is Number 1 – Again and Again

Canon is once again number one in the industry. It has held this rank since 2003, and there have been years when Canon has come close to losing it. Around the D3 and D200, Nikon threatened Canon’s dominance with strong sales, but Canon never relinquished the lead.

Best Canon R Body for High ISO ?

I am currently using the R5 and R5m2, both are excellent cameras but they’re not that exceptional at higher ISO.

Which R body is the best at higher ISO?

My main system is Canon RF, that’s why I would rather stay with Canon.

Or should I rather get the 50 and 85 1.2 Primes?, I already use the 28-70/2 and the 24-105/2.8 Zooms, and TBH I always prefer Zooms to primes.

Sigma RF-S 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS

I didn't expect to find a "super-zoom" like this interesting. But I'm starting to... :)

Size and weight of this Sigma is surprising similar to my old EF-S 15-85mm with an EF-RF adapter attached.

In general, there has to be some optical compromises with a 19x superzoom. And the Sigma only goes down to 16mm, that would be a drawback. But I'm curious to find out how such a modern 19x superzoom optically compares with the 16 years old EF-S 15-85mm?

RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM

I bought the recently-launched RF 24/1.4L mainly for astrophotography, though I haven't had the opportunity for that use case yet. I did bring it on a recent trip to San Francisco.

"Sequoia sempervirens" (Muir Woods National Monument)

EOS R8, RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM, 1/60 s, f/6.3, ISO 160

"Jellies" (Steinhart Aquarium, California Academy of Sciences)

EOS R8, RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM, 1/80 s, f/2.5, ISO 3200

Probably most are aware, but this is another lens that requires distortion correction to fill in the corners. On the upside, after correction (with DxO PL) if not constrained to the original aspect ratio, the image ends up about 8% wider (6492 x 4000 output from the 24 MP R8 sensor).

Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC Oscar CONTEMPORARY coming to RF-S

Sigma is bringing a new lens to RF-S again. 16-300(25.6-480mm FF equivalent) is something new for RF. And it has image stabilisation(6 stop at wide end, 4 stops at tele end) so R100 R50 R10 also benefits.

I'm pessimistic about coordinated IS in IBIS bodies, so I doubt this lens on R7 will get 7~8 stops.

600f/4 in a 600 AW backpack

I have a 600 F/4 lens and a Lowepro 600 AW backpack to lug it around. Does anyone else use that backpack, and if so do you bother putting the Canon lens cover over the lens when packing it? Or do folk think there is no need? So far, apart from a slight ring in the padded base it does not appear to have let the lens meet the cushion, but it would be tight fit to add the lens cover.
Thanks
