Brynn

I met up with a local Meetup group in Dallas this past weekend. It was a night shoot on a pedestrian bridge and it was hot. So hot that all the models cancelled. There were about 15 of us standing around with nobody to photograph. Then Brynn and her boyfriend walked by and she graciously posed for us all for about an hour. It was a rushed situation so nothing special. This is what I got. Canon 5D Mark III and EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II.

Patent: Canon XC Style Camera With Interchangeable Lenses

HTML:
We <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-type-of-camera-coming-from-canon-ahead-of-photokina-cr1/">reported a while back that Canon was working on a new style of ILC camera</a>, and the XC line seemed like an obvious place to look at first. Now we have a patent that shows an ILC XC style camera. It looks like the patent is about a lens converter, but I don’t speak patent all that well.</p>
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>An image pickup apparatus capable of preventing burning of an image pickup element by a light flux through an optical system provided between an interchangeable lens and an image pickup element even when an interchangeable lens is detached from a camera body.

An image pickup device for photoelectrically converting a light flux having passed through an interchangeable lens, a converter provided between the lens mount unit and the image pickup device, An image pickup apparatus 1 including a lens 102 is provided. The converter lens 102 moves to the first position where the light flux from the converter lens 102 does not form an image on the image pickup element in conjunction with the operation of detaching the interchangeable lens 2 from the lens mount portion 101. <a href="https://www.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/web/PU/JPA_H30112698/TKBS_GM302_Detailed.action">Read More…</a></p></blockquote>
<p>We have heard multiple times about a new style of camera, and<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/a-new-style-of-camera-from-canon-currently-being-tested-cr2/"> back in January we got a description of one</a>, which doesn’t match what we see here.</p>

Industry News: Nikon Announces Development of Next Generation Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera and Nikko

Nikon is stringing this out as long as possible, but this is a big day nonetheless:

https://nikonrumors.com/2018/07/25/official-press-release-nikons-develops-the-next-generation-full-frame-mirrorless-camera.aspx/

It’s full frame.

It’s a thinner than FX mount.

FX lenses are compatible with an adaptor.

Those are not trivial pieces of news. We’ve been waiting for that sort of clear tell for Canon for years here.

- A

EF-mount Mirrorless design

So I hear a lot about flange distance and how they can’t make the bodies thinner because of it. What if they kept the font to back the same and narrowed the side to side, more like their cinema bodies. They could place a flip display just like they do on camcorders on the side and still have plenty of room for custom buttons. The ergonomics on video grips might be even better than in DSLRs and light years better than Sony mirror-less cameras. Just my 2 cents.

<ul>
<li>Official announcement in the next few weeks (still no exact/confirmed date).</li>
<li>Battery life is said to be worse than current Nikon DSLR cameras (obviously).</li>
<li>The biggest problem could be that Nikon may not be able to meet demand as production facilities are not yet ramped up after the restructuring. Again, just a rumor that may or may not turn out to be true.</li>
<li>Very good video AF features (no other details).</li>
<li>Video AF will be different for the two mirrorless models (the cheaper version may have less AF goodies).</li>
<li>AF tracking ability of the 45MP version on par with the current Sony A7 models.</li>
<li>Another price, this time from the UK (body only): 45MP about £2,400, 24MP about £1,700.</li>
<li>F-mount adaptor can be used with ANY Nikkor lens (G, E, <a href="https://nikonrumors.com/2017/09/03/lets-start-talking-about-the-upcoming-nikon-mirrorless-camera.aspx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I reported that a while back</a>),</li>

Patent: LCD for Image Review While Using An EVF

HTML:
Canon News has uncovered a patent showing functionality for LCD review with EVF equipped ILCs.</p>
<p>We have been told in the past that Canon is working on a EVF DSLR, which makes some sense to us if the EVF is as good as what we see on the Leica SL. As Canon News points out, the patent images show a DSLR and not an EOS M camera.</p>
<p><strong>From <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-lcd-for-image-review-while-using-an-evf">Canon News</a> about Japan Patent Application 2018-113532:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>This patent is interesting. It discusses how to do image review and also live operation with an EVF based camera and the back LCD panel, but most interesting, is the camera suggested in the patent application. It’s a DSLR shaped camera, and not an M designed camera. While Canon could use any looking camera for it’s patents, usually the image of the camera, guides their intent. In other words, I would not have expected this to be an DSLR, if they were not looking at EVF’s in DSLR form factors, but would have shown an M5 or M6 camera, it’s not as if Canon doesn’t have those images floating around. <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-lcd-for-image-review-while-using-an-evf">Read more….</a></p></blockquote>

Would you buy more EF lenses if new FF mirrorless uses a new lens mount?

If Canon's new FF mirrorless camera does not use the old EF mount, would you continue to buy EF lenses?
Maybe wait a while to see how things play out?
Maybe wait for an adapter to be reviewed and have some time in the field?

Or do you believe a new FF mirrorless with a new mount would in no way affect the current dSLR lineup for many years to come?

Review: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II by ePhotozine

ePhotozine has reviewed the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II and measured exceptionally good values of MTFs https://www.ephotozine.com/article/canon-ef-70-200mm-f-4l-is-ii-usm-lens-review-32494
which are significantly better than their old values for the version I https://www.ephotozine.com/article/canon-ef-70-200mm-f-4l-is-usm-interchangeable-lens-review-14848

The lens does look superlative.

Patent: Further Refinement and Precision of DPAF Sensors

HTML:
A patent showing further improvements for DPAF sensors has appeared. It’s obvious Canon is going to continue to improve one of its core technologies.</p>
<p><strong>According to <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-further-refinement-and-precision-from-dpaf-sensors">Canon News</a>: </strong></p>
<blockquote><p>One of the problems with any phase detect system whether it be with a separate AF sensor such as with our DSLRs, or with the on sensor phase detect system used by Canon with Dual Pixel AF sensors, or other manufactures with their pixels / rows of phase detect pixels on the sensor is that lens aberrations can throw off the phase difference calculation.</p>
<p>In this patent application, canon processes the AF information as well as the lens information to further quantify the AF information and come up with a more precise value. <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-further-refinement-and-precision-from-dpaf-sensors">Read More….</a></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>From <a href="http://pdfaiw.uspto.gov/.aiw?PageNum=0&docid=20180205873">US Patent Application 20180205873:</a></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>A phase difference focus detection method (phase difference AF) is known as an automatic focus detection (AF) method used in an image capturing apparatus. The phase difference AF is an AF which is often used in digital still cameras, and some image sensors are used as focus detection sensors. In Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2008-52009, in order to perform focus detection based on the pupil division method, a photoelectric conversion unit of each pixel constituting an image sensor is divided into a plurality of portions, and the divided photoelectric conversion units receive light fluxes having passed through different regions of the pupil of the photographing lens via the lens via a microlens.</p>
<p>The phase difference AF can simultaneously detect the focus detection direction and the focus detection amount based on a pair of signals obtained from focus detection pixels formed in the image sensor, and it is possible to perform focus adjustment at high speed. On the other hand, since the phase difference AF utilizes a phase difference between optical images to perform focus detection, the aberration of the optical system which forms an optical image may cause an error to the focus detection result; therefore, a method for reducing such error has been suggested.</p></blockquote>

Patent: New Improved Shutter

HTML:
<p>A new patent application showing an improved mechanical shutter has appeared.</p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-new-improved-shutter">Canon News</a>, this application describes a shutter with a low power requirement and a fast release time lag.  No mention if it is quieter, which is always nice as well.</p>
<p><strong>From <a href="http://pdfaiw.uspto.gov/.aiw?PageNum=0&docid=20180196333&IDKey=461F236E3A59">US Patent Application 20180196333:</a></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>This embodiment provides a shutter apparatus and an image capturing apparatus, which can restrain a power consumption amount with a shorter release time lag</p>
<p>A shutter apparatus according to one aspect of the present invention includes a shutter base plate having an opening, a light shield movable between a closed state for closing the opening and an open state for opening the opening, a cam member rotatable in a first angle range, a second angle range, and a third angle range between the first angle range and the second angle range, the cam member that rotates in the third angle range rotating the light shield, a motor configured to drive the cam member, a forcing member configured to force the cam member so as to rotate the cam member from the first angle range to the third angle range, and a restricting member configured to restrict the forcing member from forcing the cam member in at least part of the first angle range.</p></blockquote>

Are the latest "updates" intended to keep EF on life support?

Look at the minimal improvements to some recent lenses, such as the version III of the already wonderful ef 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Also, rumors regarding the new big whites. Seriously, except for weight, which would be minimal, and some "new" coatings, how much better could new versions of the big whites be?

Could this be Canon's attempt to keep the EF L series lenses selling through the transition to whatever the new mount that will be used for FF mirrorless? Keep EF relevant long enough (years more, yes) for the FF mirrorless market to be approaching maturity?

Sync problem with optically triggered old strobe

I'm trying to figure out how to use an old Sunpak 611 with my Canon 6D. I have a little 90ex mounted on the camera and a Wein optical slave plugged into the 611. When I fire the camera, both strobes flash, seemingly at the same time, but the effect of the 611 isn't seen in the photo. Setting the camera's shutter at 1/30 doesn't help. Suggestions anyone?

A Bit More About the New “Big White” Lenses Coming from Canon [CR3]

Canon will be announcing two new “big white” lenses ahead of Photokina in September.
