Canon's First Full Frame Mirrorless Won't Have the Exact Same Sensors as the EOS 5D Mark IV. [CR2]

HTML:
It’s rumoured that the upcoming full frame mirrorless camera from Canon will have a 30.4mp sensor, which is the same resolution as the EOS 5D Mark IV. It’s also been said that the camera will be an “EOS 5D Mark IV without a mirror”.</p>
<p>We’ve now been told by a couple of people that this will not be the case. The 30.4mp sensor (which we haven’t confirmed with certainty) will be “very different than what is found in the EOS 5D Mark IV”. We would expect as such, as marketing a new mirrorless camera with a 2 year old sensor would be extremely difficult and would give a presumption that the camera would be “dead on arrival”. Simply removing a mirror from a DSLR that one might actually own isn’t the kind of sales pitch that most Canon shooters would embrace. In an ideal world, Canon would like you to have both cameras in your kit.</p>
<p>We’re also told that the camera will have an articulating screen, which isn’t found on the EOS 5D Mark IV as well as the latest DIGIC processor. Dual SD card slots are also highly likely. One source has claimed that the camera will have DPAF 4K (pretty obvious), but that the crop will be “significantly different” than what is found on the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p>We have an update on an announcement date. We’re told that Canon will have announcements the second week of September from a very good source, this <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/announcements-coming-the-first-week-of-september-cr2/">contradicts the previous post that we’ll see announcements</a> in the first week of the month. It is highly possible that Canon will have multiple announcements ahead of Photokina, as we’re expecting a lot of cameras and lenses to be announced around that time. Photokina begins on September 26, 2018.</p>
<p>Please take all of this with a grain of salt, as the information coming in is quite vague.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/deal-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-w-free-battery-grip-printer-and-mic/">The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV bundle is still live starting at $3099</a> (Reg $4113)</p>

NYT's Doug Mills has converted to A9

We've talked about where Sony might make in-roads with pros for some time. I'm convinced that photojournos, staff photographers, etc. are where Sony can steal pros right now.

Sports? They need a lot more longer glass. Weddings? They need a better speedlite system.

But the folks in a photography scrum can use the A7/A9 right now as those two things above are a much lower priority for them.

But sometimes I need to be reminded to see mirrorless as a boon and not just a replacement. Here NYT's Doug Mills is touting the A9's completely silent shutter as a competitive advantage against other news agencies as they are often in the room at the same time he is and he doesn't want them to know he's found something interesting to shoot. He also states he's shot Canon his entire life and switched to the A9 because it was a game changer and that 'Canon does not have one of these mirrorless cameras' (presuming he's referring to FF).

Amazing what you can find on C-Span.

Nikon 180-400 vs Canon 200-400

The new Nikon 180-400 looks great - at least on paper and according to field reports. I just saw one and the design tops Canon in one aspect. The lever to engage / disengage the drop in extender/converter is on the right side of the lens so it can be moved with your right hand which often by the shutter button (in landscape mode).

Other than that improvement in ergonomics design, I have not seen much difference. I am awaiting reports but I suspect that both lens will be excellent.

Any other comments?

Review: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the brand new Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II.</p>
<p><strong>From the Review:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>… Full frame f/4 results from the II are impressively sharp from corner to corner over the entire focal length range. Stopping down the aperture does not improve sharpness and no improvements are needed. Describing the image sharpness of a high-performing lens is simple. That makes my job easier and the results are very fun to look at.</p>
<p>… Need a light, compact, high-quality telephoto zoom lens? Most kits do and telephoto zoom lenses do not get much better than this one. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Lens is one that everyone can find uses for, none will tire of holding, a significant percentage of photographers can afford and I expect all will be extremely happy with the image quality this one produces. This is simply a great little lens. Your kit will be better with this lens in it! <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-4L-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Announcements Coming The First Week of September [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that photo gear related announcements from Canon will be coming the first week of September, it is expected that Canon will announce at least one mirrorless camera.</p>
<p>Other product announcements are also expected around the same time leading into Photokina, which begins September 26, 2018.</p>
<p>The full frame mirrorless camera from Canon is being described as an “EOS 5D Mark IV in a mirrorless body” internally by at least one retail insider. We think we’re going to get more than a mirrorless version of a two year old camera.</p>
<span id="pty_trigger"></span>

I don't bird, but if I wanted to...

Was sitting on the back porch today and a decent sized raptor of some sort swooped by. Brown and tan for the most part, a healthy 4'+ wingspan, relatively small head and beak. I got a few lazy gliding circles not twenty feet from me and off it went.

I checked my local source:
https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/conservation/birds/raptors

It had the mottled breast/belly of the peregrine shown on this page in the top right, but the head looked different. It looked most like an adult Merlin of the birds I cross-referenced from above at my alma mater's ornithology website, but it was considerably bigger than the Merlin dimensions of a 2' wingspan listed there.

Any ideas of what it is?

I don't bird or plan to get into birding, but I wouldn't mind capturing this one or others that might swoop by. We're on the top of a hill and it's not uncommon to see this, so I thought I'd leave my 5D3 + 70-200 f/2.8L IS II ready to go with a custom mode just for this if I spot one again.

My plan:

  • AI Servo + Center AF '+' cluster
  • 6 fps
  • I generally shoot Av, f/3.5 or so (plenty of light, no need to shoot wide open)
  • Will set ISO to get at least 1/2000s (when I saw this one ISO 400, was fine for this).
  • Usually blue skies here, so a CPL is probably going to be used.

Any changes you'd recommend? I have a 2x T/C but I honestly didn't need it given how close it came this time.

Industry News: This is the New DJI Mavic II Pro Drone, Official Announcement Delayed

HTML:
<iframe width="728" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/q_1XKDkjGu4" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe><a href="https://dronedj.com/2018/07/06/breaking-news-dji-mavic-2-photo-leaked-online/">DroneDJ</a> has gotten their hands on images and specifications for the highly anticipated DJI Mavic II drone. There is also a possibility that we’re going to see a “non Pro” version of this drone as well.</p>
<p>DJI originally had an event scheduled on July 18, 2018 to announce the new drone(s), but that has been delayed with no rescheduled date as of yet.</p>
<p><strong>From DroneDJ:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Improved form factor</strong> – The new <a href="https://dronedj.com/2018/06/15/dji-would-like-you-to-see-the-bigger-picture-on-july-18th-possible-mavic-pro-2-announcement/">Mavic 2</a> drone is sleeker and more aerodynamic than its predecessor, something we expected all along. At the same time, it is very much recognizable as a DJI Mavic Pro. Same color, same shape and the same folding mechanism it seems. Battery mounted on top and towards the back. Similar to original Mavic and not like the Mavic Air.</p>
<p><strong>What’s in a name</strong> – The drone is labeled Mavic 2, which may mean that there still will be a Mavic Pro 2. The bands on the legs of the original Mavic Pro are gold colored. The one shown in the photo is silver, which may mean the advanced (or basic) model if you go by previous DJI drones (Phantom).</p>
<p><strong>Two different sensor sizes</strong> – The photo seems to show two different sensor sizes. The one mounted on the drone in grey could be a 1-inch sensor, and the one in black on the table perhaps a 1/1.7 sensor? A big sensor will surely help you to “See the Bigger Picture”.</p>
<p><strong>Gimbal</strong> – The photo also seems to show a removable gimbal, a la the GoPro Karma. If you look at the picture closely, it seems that the gimbal might just slide into the drone and thus can be used separately as well. To the left, on the table, you can see the second gimbal with what appears to be a significantly smaller camera/sensor size and a small screen. There is also a lighting connection presumably for charging. The gimbal mounting system seems to be a lot more sturdy and durable than what we currently have in the Mavic Pro.</p>
<p><strong>Motors</strong> – The motors seem to be of a larger size than the original Mavic Pro</p>
<p><strong>Propellers</strong> – Are not the ‘quiet’ ones we have seen on the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum and Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. Maybe DJI will reserve that option for later in the product lifecycle of the Mavic 2?</p>
<p><strong>360-degree obstacle avoidance</strong> – The new Mavic 2 seems to have at least front and side obstacle avoidance cameras/sensors. Very likely it will feature the same at the bottom and at the back of the drone. Not at the top, however.</p>
<p><strong>Foldable legs</strong> – We can’t see the rear legs of the drone but the front legs seem to fold sideways like they do on the original Mavic Pro.</p>
<p><strong>Zoom lens?</strong> – When you look closely at the lens of the camera it does not seem to resemble the lenses OsitaLV showed earlier today. Unless the gimbal had been removed. <a href="https://dronedj.com/2018/07/06/breaking-news-dji-mavic-2-photo-leaked-online/">Read more…</a></p></blockquote>

50mm or 85mm?

So I already own (and love!) the Canon 100m f/2.8 L IS but I'm weighing up adding a bokeh monster to my kit bag too

Thing is, I would prefer the 85mm but it is so close in focal length to the 100mm which had me thinking of considering a 50mm.

Which way would you guys go if you already own a 100m? 50mm or 85mm?

Could FF mirrorless tempt 'never-mirrorless' FF SLR folks with features?

For those who have no interest in mirrorless, what would happen if any of the following items/features landed in the first FF mirrorless body?

  • IBIS
  • Tilty-flippy touch screen (in a higher than 6D2 feature set)
  • A new variant of the 5DS sensor with on-chip ADC (i.e. something resembling the 5DS2 sensor)
  • +3 fps over your current FF SLR (presume fully working AF throughout)
  • Thin mount design affords enough space to rear-filter EF lenses that are not front-filterable (possibly through the EF adaptor)
  • Eye AF
  • Ultra-light body design (more than just from mirror removal and body size changes: say, with carbon fiber instead of metal)
  • AF points that almost completely fill the viewfinder -- no more central core of AF points that SLR designs typically have

For those with no interest in mirrorless, Is there a killer app that will change your mind? Is anything above so attractive to you that if mirrorless was the only way to get it, you'd do it?

In other words, if a critical thing you are interested in drops in the new FF mirrorless rig, do you bite the bullet and get the FF mirrorless rig, or just wait/hope that particular tech/feature makes it into your preferred SLR slot?

(Again, I'm specifically asking the 'never-mirrorless' camp of FF shooters. If you are interested in getting an FF mirrorless rig, you are not who I am looking for with this, thx.)

Canon Will Announce Their First Full Frame Mirrorless in 2018 [CR3]

HTML:
The announcement date guesses for Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera have ranged between Photokina in September 2018 and some time in Q1 of 2019.</p>
<p>We’re now told that one of the full frame mirrorless cameras coming from Canon will be announced and on sale before the end of 2018. While the exact announcement date is unknown at this time. Logically, something should be happening for Photokina. Although, we’re a mere 10 weeks away from Photokina and specifications are still hard to come by, if more information doesn’t become clearer soon, we might only get a development announcement at the trade show.</p>
<p>We have noticed a spike in folks seeing cameras being tested in the wild that don’t match up to current Canon camera bodies, unfortunately we have yet to receive any pictures of suspected test cameras.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/industry-news-the-first-rumored-specifications-of-nikons-full-frame-mirrorless-cameras/">Nikon appears to be getting closer</a> to announcing their new system and I don’t expect Canon to be too far behind.</p>

Mismatch: 80D vs 5D ii for Portraits?

I'm enjoying a new to me 80D, and a Canon 50 f/1.8 ii for portraits. We also have the 24 f/2.8 and Younguo f/2 when there isn't enough space for the 50. A new friend told me she has the 5D ii, ii, and iv. She said she really loves the 5D ii for skin tone and texture in portraits. It looks like a 5D ii costs about the same as a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 sale price for my 80D. Any feel whether one would be superior for portrait photos?

I didn't expect to consider a body as a direct competitor to a new lens. I figure the 80D may have an edge in really low light recovery, but given decent light, which would be more desirable? I'm very curious what folks with more experience think, since I've never had a FF digital camera.

  • Poll Poll
Is it realistic for the canon 7d iii to match the image quality of nikon d500?

Do you think the 7diii can at least match or even overtake the nikon d500 regarding noise at high is

  • Will not match iso performance

    Votes: 3 30.0%
  • Will match iso performance

    Votes: 4 40.0%
  • Will have better iso performance

    Votes: 3 30.0%

When you compare Images of the 7d ii with images form the nikon d500 you can see two things in favor of the nikon d500:

More sharpness
Less noise at high iso

I think that canon can match the sharpness of the images of the nikon d500 by removing the AA filter.
But iso performance wise it is atm obvious that the canon 7d ii has more colour noise, way more color noise.
As for luminance noise im not sure how far they really are apart.

Do you think the 7diii can at least match or even overtake the nikon d500 regarding noise at high iso? is it realistic? keep in mind the nikon d500 has a slightly bigger aps-c sensor.

Perhaps a poll is usefull here:

Is Maybe "Mirrorless" Not as Much of a Thing as Everyone's Saying?

So I got the latest and greatest mirrorless camera, took a spin for a day and went right back to my large DSLR without looking back.
Had all of the features anyone could want and more, but was just too small for good handling and I didn't like how it came out of the box for transferring photos (no USB cable, etc.).
Since that recent fateful day I got a moderately large and heavy DSLR lens and that system just feels perfectly right with everything I could ever want and more starting on day one.
Not feel'in it.

EF-X Mirrorless concept

I had this buried on a poll thread and thought it might get lost.

A few folks here offered this EF-X idea and I put it to pictures. Forgive my crappy Photoshoppery here, but would this idea work?

EF-X Idea.jpg
Pros:
  • Full EF mirrorless = no adaptors needed, no one gets cold feet about Canon abandoning them, etc.
  • A tiny lens + body combination is still possible
  • Limited scope for Canon to support. It would be impractical to do this for larger / longer / faster glass, so Canon won't have to build a houseloud of these EF-X lenses -- they'd likely just keep this to the 3-7 lenses that make the size savings pop, like the 28 f/2.8 IS I show in the graphic.

Cons:
  • Say arrivederci to adapting FD, EF-S (in crop mode), Nikkor, and third party lenses.
  • These lenses might have to protrude into the mirror-space a lot to enjoy that small overall footprint, like a good 20-25mm or so, so I wonder if that means we're dealing with a collapsing lens + FBW sort of 'powered' mounting process. (Not sure this is a 'con' or just what's needed to implement this idea.)
  • A nestled smaller lens might have very little sticking out (see pic below), which will certainly reduce the real estate for focus rings, zoom rings, distance scales, AF + IS switches, etc. and reversing appropriately sized hoods may no longer be possible.
  • The full EF tube/block = no chance for an ultra-slim deck of cards / portable hard drive sized tiny 2nd body for travel.
  • Large aperture rear elements could be problematic to nestle like this, ya? (But they might never make fast glass that would be too big in this format -- possibly just point folks to EF at that point.)

This is not my idea -- Don Haines (and some others, forgive my poor memory) first brought it to my attention. I'm just curious to see how technically viable this is, as well as how this might be received by the 'I want it thin' FF mirrorless camp.

Patent: APS-C Compact Lens Optical Formulas

HTML:
A patent showing three different optical formulas for APS-C sensor cameras has appeared.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-aps-c-compact-camera-lenses">According to Canon News</a>, this patent is missing some good information that would help narrow down what these embodiments are for.</p>
<p><strong>The 3 embodiments:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>15-45mm f/2.8-5.6</li>
<li>15-45mm f/2.0-5.0</li>
<li>15-60mm f/2.0-5.0</li>
</ul>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>From Canon News:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Our assumption with this patent application is that these lenses are for APS-C given the focal lengths of the lenses, however in this patent application, unlike most, the half image width is curiously missing from the patent application. This could be for a mirrorless EF-M camera, or even a APS-C compact camera. It’s hard to tell without the image half width. The patent description seems to be talking more about a compact camera.</p></blockquote>
<p>It looks like the 15-60mm f/2.0-5.0 has an extremely short back focus suggesting it may be for a PowerShot application and not for mirrorless or APS-C DSLRs.</p>
<p>We wouldn’t be shocked to see a new EF-M 15-45mm lens announced alongside the EOS M5 Mark II, as we’ve been told that a new kit lens of some kind is on the way.</p>

TDP Image Quality posted -- 70-200 f/4L IS II: it's not much better

Holy cow, and not a good holy cow:

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=1198&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=404&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

The new optical design doesn't look that new at all. I know it's just one copy, but:

  • At 200, the Mk II looks a hair better in midframe. It's not a resounding win, but it's better.

  • At 135, the Mk II is a step forward.

  • At 70, I'll take the Mk I thank you very much. :o

We expected this from the f/2.8L IS III, not from the new optical design f/4L IS II.

[Checks TDP specs]

The IS improved, MFD got smaller, one more blade was added and the filter thread got bigger... but the element count is the same and the IQ looks very similar. Just how new and improved is this optical design? Is this another 24-105L II sort of situation?
